Ejiro Evero on growing potential of Panthers defense | Carolina Panthers
send thoughts and prayers to a a good friend, trusted comrade, um Alex Singleton, uh from the Broncos. Uh hell of a guy, hell of a person. And um you know, obviously he’s going through little adversity right now, but um he’s um responding the right way. He’s going to be okay and um looking for him to bounce back, which he will. And um just wanted to let everybody know and let him know that we are thinking of him and praying for him. All right, we’ll kick things off with Cass. followed by Mike K. Hey Jay, how’s it going? Good. How you doing? Good. Um JC was was pretty hard on himself Sunday after the game. Took a lot of responsibility on accountability and said, you know, he can’t wait for this coming Sunday as well. Like how have you seen him respond this week? And and what does it mean to have kind of one of the leaders on your defense take that on themselves? Well, I mean, we all uh preach that it’s about uh everybody being responsible for their own performance and being accountable to their own performance, coaches and players. And uh so certainly that’s what he’s done. Uh look, this is he’s one of the best players in this league. Uh he’s done so many great things for us um over the last couple years. And even within that game, there were so many downs that he was really, really good. And you know, he had a couple that he wish he had back. Um and that’s the nature of that position. And uh the cool thing about him though is like um his his confidence is not affected. Um his demeanor is not affected. Um this guy always prepares the right way. And so um I think he’s just going about his business as normal. And uh I know he’s excited to get back out there and play. Um but uh you know, he always carries himself the right way. And then just one more kind of a little off the path here. I know you never coached Jaier Alexander, but he said this week he was he was retiring kind of to step away, focus on his mental health. Like what is it like as a coach to kind of um how do you check in on guys like that and and kind of make sure they’re where they need to be and and how important is that? No, it’s very very important and uh you know especially when it um at the position coach level and the QC level I think um those guys and you know I have that responsibility as well but like when you spend a lot of time with the guys you get a pulse for how they are how they act um you know if things are different or off I think it’s really really important to address that because um all of these guys are under a lot of uh certainly stress and pressure and uh we can’t minimize those things and I’m I’m really happy for him you to step aside and take care of himself and we all need to do that if uh that situation presents itself. Thank you. Hey EJ, how’s it going? Good. How you doing? Good. I’m glad you brought up Alex because Claude Cherilus is kind of having a similar career arc to him and you know Alex in Philly took advantage of of his playing opportunity when he got it then eventually landed with you guys in Denver. Claudin’s been here for three years. He’s been with you about as long as any linebacker that’s on the roster. I’m just curious, what do you see from him that helps you feel confident that he can step up when his number’s called? Yeah, you know, it’s a time on task and uh you know, I’m really proud of him because he came uh from a small school and um without a lot of experience and really needed to develop and uh the the improvement he’s made since he first got here to this point has just been so dramatic and um in a positive way. And uh so I’m really happy about the way he works. He’s he’s a professional. He does things the right way in the building, outside the building, and um he’s certainly done everything in his power to prepare himself for these moments. And you know, when he had to step in last year, you know, he did a heck of a job. And uh we’re looking forward to the same if that opportunity presents itself. What’s he like as a as a as a I guess a pupil or somebody who you are trying to mentor, you know, as well as all the other guys on defense since you’ve gotten to know him? Yeah, he’s um very very studious. He sits in the front of the classroom. Uh great notetaker. He’s always asking Coach Hansen questions. um even in a big meeting room with the uh uh the entire defense, you know, when I’m presenting up there or going through some calls, he’s always one of the guys that has responds and is vocal from that standpoint. Um very very very coachable. Uh yeah, so he um he has the habits it takes to improve and so that’s what you’ve seen. We’ll go with Jeff Hawkins followed by Joe Pson. Hey, greetings coach. Good morning. Uh yeah, good morning. uh tight ends um at times this season has taken advantage of the defense. Um can you talk a little bit about uh Kyle Pittz’s talents and his route running? Uh you limited him to 39 yards in the opener and what will it take to contain him a second time? Yeah, he’s big, he’s fast. Um you know, obviously in the middle of the field, but this is also a guy they obviously see him as a receiver because they’ll put him on the back side of the formation one-on-one and get him those ISO opportunities. And so he’s he’s got a really good skill set and u can certainly run really really well for really any position and uh so he’s a heck of a player and um we know that he’s going to be a vital part of their plan and so we’ve got to be ready uh for that challenge. How is Trayvon? I saw him in a locker room after the game with his uh the stitches on his lip but I didn’t see him on the injury list yesterday. Is he ready to go? Yeah, I didn’t know there was anything wrong with him. Good. Thank you. Yeah, no problem. Hey Jay, good morning. Good morning. We have seen uh Scorton’s uh pressure rate and sack rate tick up here the last 3, four weeks or so. Is that simply a matter of opportunity or what have you seen evolve in his game, you know, over these first 10 games? I think it’s a big part of improvement. Um, this guy is uh he’s unbelievable. I mean, since the day he walked in here, phenomenal work habits, great in the classroom. Um, he sat next to Pat Jones from day one and just trying to absorb as much as he could from him. Um, he’s very, very coachable. He’s very, very smart. He, um, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a player, especially at such a young age, play so hard. I mean, every practice rep, every game rep, he is running and running and running. jumping on the ball, doing all the the little things. And so, um, but anyways, my point is that he, um, when you work and prepare the way he does in the classroom, in the training room, on in the weight room, um, uh, on the practice field, obviously, uh, you’re going to get better. And, um, that’s what you’re seeing. And so, he was drafted in that position for a reason. And with his habits, he’s going to continue to improve. And so, that’s what he’s done. You mentioned the draft. anything as you watched his college tape or even during the the meetings with him that was there a game where that that energy and that effort level jumped off the the tape at you? I mean I this is not even hyperbole but it’s every time he’s on the field. I mean that is he only knows one way to go and it is hard and it is as fast as he can every time and so um that’s his play style. Thank you. Mhm. Any more questions for coach? All right. Thank you all. Sorry, I was trying to get my mic. Oh, never mind. I was just going to follow up on that that question about Nick. Like is that almost a how much of is is that a good problem to have where you almost have to slow a guy down and like I know you said you you’ve never really seen a guy play that hard that young, but like have is there a guy in your past that you can kind of compare him to as far as just his his talent level and his dedication? Well, I haven’t been exposed to him, but he does and you know, it’s funny at similar schools I believe Purdue, but it kind of kind of reminds me of George Carlous. am I pronouncing that correctly? Um from uh Kansas City, but uh they’re very similar in terms of uh the way they play. Uh big physical guys, great great motors, great play style. Um so that’s kind of the first person that jumps to mind when I think about Nick. [Music]
Evero spoke about the progression he’s seen in rookie Nic Scourton, veteran Claudin Cherelus, and more.
