I know they needed to do this as a salary dump cause the guy basically quit on the team, but who tf decided to sign a 38 year old to a 3 year 6.25m a year contract?!?!?!
Not to mention that 1st turned into Seth Jarvis 🤦🏼♂️

Not even Seth Jarvis could help save this team right now lol
Name a good trade in probably the last ten years, not a ton I can remember
To answer your rhetorical question, it was Lamoriello.
What’s worse is that for the first two years, we had ample cap space. Could have given Marleau $9.25M x 2 years and we’d have been fine.
Hey, cheer up. There is 0 way the leafs would’ve drafted Seth Jarvis. We would’ve drafted someone playing in fucking Peru by now instead.
The leafs have been making horrible trades for a few years now.
Even if we kept these guys, they’ll end up like Mason Marchment and go somewhere else.
Also, this was on Lou for signing Marleau’s contract.
Today? It was terrible when they made it too.
Signing Marleau to that contract was so dumb.
If a player doesn’t want to sign here for market value, just move on. Why hamstring the team?
Did not need to get rid of him that bad
It looked terrible years ago.
Dubas is long gone, and Lou signed Marleau.
We really gotta get over this. We still ended up with a 1st rounder that year. The guy we drafted could have been incredible but tragically passed away.
Every single trade where we gave up a first was terrible except for McCabe.
Talking about the Marleau trade. That’ll fix it.
Treleven will be the end of this once promising team . Mathews will sign next contract with Utah and Nylander will be scoring 12 goals a year.
Looked horrible the day it’s happened.
For me it was signing an all time loser whose never won anything to teach our young core how to not win anything as well
It was 5 years ago, get over it
On the bright side we made cap space to keep Kasperi Kappanen and Andreas Johnsson !
What’s even better is I think the Leafs are about the only team who paid that steep a price for a salary dump. Then suddenly everybody else could dump the salary they needed for not nearly as steep a price.
Let’s pour salt in the wounds and then add a dash of lemon on top!
This team is constantly hemorrhaging assets
Every trade that they have made looks terrible now.
Leafs give away prospects all the time. Most recently minten AND a first for 2 seasons of brandon carlo lmfao
The only part of this post I don’t agree with/understand is you saying Marleau quit on the team? Maybe I’m forgetting something but didn’t he just get old and slow? I don’t remember him quitting on the team
Dubas got played by Carliona, and then leafs fucked up next season so Carliona ended up 13th pick
Leafs never addressed the biggest thing even back then, which was leadership. Leafs don’t have a real captain, not then and not now
Honestly the funniest part of this is it was conventional wisdom that they would dump him in the 3rd year. So being the leafs they frontloaded the deal right because that would be logical and dumping Marleau would be easy right? No it was a flat deal so they needed to give up the 1st round pick because a team was eating 6.25 mill to take Marleau on.
That trade and signing was brutal kind of sucks too cause Marleau was pretty good in his first year here. The MarKadMar line was fun
Was terrible the day they made it. Blame Lou for the contract. He knew it would overlap with Matthews and Marner’s first year post ELC.
If not for the pandemic the pick is probably not as high.
“they needed to do this” fun fact this is the only time in league history that a 1st rounder was given up for cap dump where there was only 1 year left on the players contract. Detroit came the closest with Datsyuk and even that was for a player who never played in the NHL again Marleau finished that contract and signed another one afterward. Dubas should have been fired for this.
It was terrible the day it happened
Getting rid of him was well worthwhile. Signing him to that terrible contract was a huge mess up.
Not protecting McCann looked terrible then and even more today
