Kellen Moore on win vs. Panthers, bye week | New Orleans Saints
I’ll uh yeah, I’ll just I’ll just open up for questions. Keep it simple. Okay. Um Ken, would you say that the the performance yesterday was the team’s most complete performance of the season? Felt like it was nice to see complimentary football in three phases working together. Uh certainly you saw that with uh with just the way that thing played out. And so I felt like it was uh one of our cleaner games, protecting the football, creating turnovers, um playing a physical game in all three phases. So uh hopefully something we can build on. Kell, what’s kind of your approach to the by- week? Do you just let guys, you know, just enjoy the time off or how do you kind of approach it? Yeah, every every year is different. Um, you know, we have the later buy. Uh, we don’t have a Thursday game this year and so this is kind of our one opportunity for our guys to to breathe and kind of uh, you know, recharge oursel and so obviously some guys u, you know, guys are on different schedules at this point. Uh some guys were obviously doing the guys that had to do treatment and weight room and stuff today and then most of the week guys will be out of here uh you know recovering on on their own um in their own way and then Monday we’ll regroup and kind of u get a uh you know bonus Monday and then get back into a normal week. Yeah, I know you kind of you probably treated your opponent the same, but you know as media members we kind of look at the schedule and you look at the records of the teams that ahead. Do you look at this as like a good opportunity when you look at the records of those teams that you got the rest of the way or how do you look at that? Um I don’t think too much uh too too far ahead. Uh but I do think uh this game hopefully can build some momentum for us. Uh again I think uh as we said the the way our guys played I thought it was some really winning winning football in all three phases and hopefully we can carry that you know through this by week. uh you know, you kind of have this victory for, you know, the next couple weeks to kind of uh keep building off of and then um you know, we got a bunch of division games to end this year. Um obviously that’ll be an important part. You got four of those. Um you got some other games traveling to different places that we’re going to have some opportunities to compete and so um you know, hopefully we can get get this thing going. When you come off a win, do you almost wish you could just keep playing and not have this by week or how do you see that? Well, with with uh with where it is in the season, um you know, I think definitely I think our guys are ready to have a little bit of a chance to recharge and regroup and uh allow us to uh you know, have that back end of the season that that that big push there. And so, u you know, these these by-weeks tend to come in really valuable times and we got to take advantage of it. How do you personally spend the bye-week? like you’ve you’ve you know you’ve uh mentioned before that you’re a football junkie and you’re up late at night and you’re looking at things like how do you manage the by-week? Do you try to give yourself time off or do you stay on top of everything? Yeah, we’ll go through a lot of self scout the next couple days just going through you know our season oursel and u you know things that uh we want to improve on, focus on things that we can recognize that are uh going the way we want them to. Um, you know, I think you got to do a great job of, you know, digesting all that information, study football, and, uh, and at the same time, I think it is important for us all to get away for a few days, recharge, and, uh, you know, get yourself ready to go for the for next week. I know we asked you about um, about Tyler yesterday, but just going back and looking at it, were there some things that you saw that were that may have impressed you even more than you realized during the game, or on the flip side, some things that you think he could have done better? Yeah, I thought there’s a lot of positives. every game’s going to have some opportunities um that we’re gonna want want to get back and that that everyone falls in the same boat for that. I think um you know there’s a lot of positives there. I thought you know the hard downs, the third downs I thought were a huge factor in uh in the offense um yesterday. I thought he made some incredible plays moving in the pocket, guys staying alive and so uh you he delivered downfield, made some big plays. Colin Tyler completed passes to eight different receivers. When you see that throughout the course of the game, what does that mean to you? Yeah, I think it’s just him trusting the progression, trusting the way the way the play plays itself out. Every defense is going to have different uh coverages, different presentations. You know, every play has an objective, but uh you know, you trust the process. And so, I thought that was a good example, you know, to have a few tight ends get involved in the pass game. Uh the receivers obviously did, the running backs did a couple times. Uh yeah, I thought he just did a really nice clean job. Can do you tell that uh Tyler has a familiarity like a pre-existing fil familiarity with uh Jawan like from their time in college at all? Like has that helped him kind of get up to speed here? You think at all? I don’t know. That’d be a good question to ask those guys. I think obviously they spent some time together. Um you know they were able to make two plays off schedule where Jawan stayed live and Tyler’s able to find him. So, um, you know, maybe there’s a little benefit to that. Speaking of that, Kellen, we saw early on in the season, you know, talked a little bit about how the, um, the scramble drill wasn’t necessarily working in the way that you’d like for looking like the way that you’d like for it to look. What’s changed recently that’s made that so much more effective? It’s a good question. I think uh, obviously we spent a lot of time talking about it. Um, you know, I think we’ve talked through it a lot, drilled it, uh, in practices a little bit more over the back back part of this, uh, first part of the season. Um, but again, I think it comes down to guys, you know, executing at a high level. I think, uh, you know, Tyler, you know, on a couple of those plays, just phenomenal pocket presence, his ability to navigate it and get out in space and then our receivers to stay alive and, uh, you know, give yourself opportunities to make those plays downfield. I think it’s collective effort and everyone’s got to understand there’s big plays to be had even when the original play doesn’t happen. It happens all across this league. All the best quarterbacks in this league playoff schedule and so we got to be able to execute there as well. I’m kind of curious what are your like overall conclusions over as you enter the the by-week here of where you guys stand as a team and just how the first, you know, 10 games or so have gone. Yeah, I think there’s going to be a really good deep dive the next couple days for us collectively to give um really clear answers for that for oursel. But, uh, you know, I think overarching wise, um, you know, I love the way our guys battle. I love the way our guys compete. Um, you know, they they play together. I think, uh, for us to have a a season where, you know, you’re not getting the wins you want. For our locker room and for our guys to be battling together and have the energy each and every day, I think shows just the special guys we have. And so, uh, you know, we want to be a physical football team. We got to be able to run the football, stop the run. Uh, last, you know, this past week was a, um, step in the right direction for that. And so we just got to keep building on that and uh continue to find the explosive opportunities we can in the offense and eliminating it on defense and special teams. I thought uh Isaiah had some big time plays in the game. Uh some tackles that had huge impacts and we got to keep taking advantage of those opportunities. You know, you look at the the teams that you guys have played on your schedule like the Rams are 7-2, the Seahawks, the Patriots. Like what is facing like those caliber of teams? What has what has that done for you guys kind of as you enter the buy here? Is there anything to be gained from that level of competition? Played some really good teams. We’ve been close. We’ve battled. Um we’ve missed some opportunities. And so we get opportunities to learn from those. Uh take them as educational opportunities. Um you can grow from each and every experience in this NFL. And so I feel like uh you know we we got to get better. We got to keep continuing to get better. And I know our guys all feel the same way and we’ll just keep building. K, what does it sort of mean to you personally to be able to have you kind of kept this team together even they were, you know, they were one and eight at one point and they kept playing. What does that mean that you were able to kind of keep them fighting but still believe it? Yeah, I just think we we have an awesome group of guys uh collectively um you know from from a building standpoint, support staff, coaches, players, we have the right kind of people here and I think that’s what makes this uh this place special. And so uh we know we know the journey we’re on. we know the the path we’re going to take to to find the success that we all want and we can achieve and uh it takes having the right people and so I feel like we got a lot of really good people here that go to work each and every day battle compete do everything they can to help each other and so uh you know if we keep knocking out the process the right way keep taking advantage of these opportunities more success will come their way this might be a weird question but what will clap is are you kind of taking advantage of him as almost like an assistant coach it seems like he’s on the sideline with a headset and talking to the offensive line group. Yeah. So, Will’s phenomenal. I had a chance to be with him in LA. Obviously, played a ton of snaps for us there and then unfortunately had the injury in preseason this year. And so, uh he’s a huge part of this. He’s an important part of uh our experience here with the offensive line. We have some younger guys playing. Will’s got a ton of experience in this league. Um you know, he’s been an awesome asset for uh you know, Brendan and the rest of the O line coaches. And so, uh, he’s helped those guys in a lot of different ways as he’s gone through his rehab process, which has been awesome. He he’s a really special person. Colin, do do you guys want to like operate more from under center or was that kind of like matchup specific to this game? Uh, I know you did it against Buffalo, too. Like, is it just opponent specific or is that is that something you want to make more more part of it? Yeah, I think it’s uh it’s something we we always would like to do. Um, you know, I think our guys are having some success under center in the run game. And so, uh, you know, I think it’s for us just continue to find what best suits us each and every week with the based off the opponent. Um, you know, I thought this week it provided the opportunity for us to play a little bit more under center. Uh, we played a little heavier with some bigger personnel groups in a few situations. Um, you know, then you got the play action off of it. And so, uh, something definitely we can look at, say, hey, what what was the good that came out of this and what can we continue to, you know, double down on, lean into and and and expand. Is any of that like based on like what the quarterback’s comfortable with, too? I know Tyler kind of played that, you know, pro pro style type of offense in college. Is that is that anything to do with it too? Yeah, I think Tyler Tyler, you know, one of the great advantages he has is his exposure to so much football over the course of his college career is a huge asset and his ability to just be able to play a couple different ways, navigate some different things. Um, you know, he’s just done a phenomenal job with that. And so, uh, you know, something for us to, you know, look at, hey, say, hey, there’s some positives that have come out of this the last few weeks and so we got to continue to build on that. And you you had mentioned before like like with the third and longs when that was kind of a a thing about like you know needing to get some of those like big time plays there. I mean this is kind of fairly obvious but I mean Tyler being able to to do some of that stuff like how much of an advantage is is that and how much confidence does that you think kind of breed like throughout just seeing him you know convert third and 12 third and eight you know some of those plays. Yeah huge plays. Credit to Tyler credit to the guys on the field. uh you know they’re they’re ultimately making really special plays and so like we say there there’s there’s some hard downs in this league. There’s hard third downs. There’s hard plays in the red zone and the teams that are really successful in this league, you know, they’re able to convert and succeed on those hard downs. And so uh you know, I think it’s uh it grows confidence, it grows belief in in the group when they’re able to execute uh in those challenging situations. It takes all 11. It takes the O line and the protection, the running back stepping up and blocking. um you know the receivers run their initial routes that they’re open we’re able to deliver and if not they’re again executing a scramble drill and so um definitely some stuff that we can really reinforce of u you know here here’s their opportunities that we had and we take advantage of them you can have a game like this I think yesterday you had u correct me if I’m wrong a season high in rushing attempts at 37 um could I know some of that comes from playing with the lead but what else went into that especially on the heels of you know how the previous several games had gone running the ball. Yeah. Yeah. I think we went into this game we got to run the football better. I mean that’s the goal. That’s the aspiration. Uh that’s what we want to do. We want to run the football and build everything off of that. And so uh for us to have a game like that and we we had to hang with it a little bit as that game went. I thought credit to our defense of uh battling and playing a really really good game on that side of the football uh allowing us to create those rush attempts as as we kept going. And then, you know, the four-minute drive I thought was a really special drive for our guys, uh, to get the ball back, you know, around seven minutes and never give it back. Uh, credit to those guys, the running backs, the O line, the receivers. They laid, you know, with some big time blocks. Um, and then it kind of became a running backtaomem show to finish it. So, it was really awesome. Hey, Kelly, Deario told us last week about the uh, sort of reward system the defense has for takeaways with the t-shirts and things like that. Do you have anything like that that you do on the offensive side? Uh that that’s Yeah, everyone’s a little bit different. Defensive side has has a t-shirt thing going which is awesome. Uh offensively, uh we don’t have a t-shirt thing going, but uh yeah. uh with the heavier personnel, Colin, just what stood out about kind of your usage of tight ends yesterday getting guys like Zer involved and more foster reps. Yeah, just just bigger personnel groups trying to get in some um you know, we just got to run the football better. You know, we got we got to find a path that is as successful as we possibly can be. Felt like uh maybe playing a little bit more some heavier personnel had some advantages. you know, Taesm was able to do some work in there as well, you know, kind of playing the wing tight end and doing a number of things. And so, felt like it gave us a little bit of a different look than maybe we had shown the previous few weeks. Um, you know, we’re able to get some physical runs in there and, you know, now it’s a matter of, you know, getting some of those physical runs to create some big time explosives and, uh, you know, we’re going to be right where we want to be. Chris talked postgame about uh, the anxiety he had when he got to the stadium just getting hurt there. Was that something you knew about before the game? Did he talk to you about that or is that something you found out afterwards? He he didn’t talk to me directly about it, but um obviously I was aware of it just the circumstances and so um you know Chris is a special player, special person. His resiliency through this whole journey of um of the NFL lately, the last couple years for him has been obviously something that he’s had to navigate and there’s nothing easy about it. Um you know, the way he’s playing, you know, has been really really uh good. He’s been playing at a really high level. uh this game was just a special game for him. You know, I thought the way he played in that game was uh you know, big- time impact. Yeah. Coach Williams mentioned that in the preseason Chris came to him and said, “Hey, I would like to be more of a using the deep threat role.” And he said he kind of brought that to you in those discussions. Like how did how did you receive that information and what what was kind of your response in terms of how you looked at the offense and his role as specifically a downfield option? Yeah. Yeah. co what makes CO great is, you know, he communicates a really high level and I I love that. I love guys that um want to communicate, want to talk through u roles and opportunities and what they’re seeing on the field. I think that’s that’s where we become our best is when we’re all in in the same path and we’re all communicating at a really high level. And so, um you know, Chris can attack the the defense in every possible way. Um you know, he’s done a nice job of that through his entire career and and it’s exciting to continue to build this thing together. um give him more and more of those opportunities as we go moving forward and so uh you know he’s going to be on the field a lot impacting games that way. Where have you seen Tyler like make the most growth just since you started working with him you know postdraft to to now? Yeah, I think his feet in his pocket. Uh you know I think um you know obviously the arm talent we saw Tyler can make all the throws and he’s doing a great job there with anticipating things and making things happen. I think the the biggest challenge and stress for quarterbacks in the NFL as they transition is you know the pockets are tight and your ability to move within those pockets and uh you know deliver downfield and so I thought you know he’s done a nice job progressing with his feet uh being in rhythm when he can delivering when he can and then when it gets off schedule um you know again we’ve had two games here Rams we had a couple the two-minute drive before half um numerous examples I think in this game where he’s stepping up in the pocket and he’s able to deliver in that phase and then he’s able to get off schedule when he has to. And so those are all important factors. What’s kind of like the the the process for developing that and working on it and refining it? Yeah, drill work every day. Him and Scotty Tolene, uh they do an awesome job just drilling that stuff every day. Again, uh putting yourself in as many of these situations as you can in practice, treating practice like the game. Um you know, and and it’s just repetition. It’s nothing uh elaborate. It’s day after day work and uh you know putting yourself in many sit as many situations and and when it’s not right, you know, okay, that one I missed on and okay, how can I get better? Both quarterbacks showed a lot of improvement in your system under pressure in particular from their previous experience. Is is what you were just highlighting a big part of that or is there something or is it your system that makes it a little bit more quarterback friendly to deal with pressure? I I don’t know. I don’t know uh any of that. But I I do know like for these guys, I think it’s important to always try and put yourself in as many situations as you can. Every play has an intent for the play and every single play on a white board looks pretty and we got a nice, you know, clean opportunity to make an explosive or a big play. But you got to know what the stressors are. You have to know, you know, what the defense can do to put you in a challenging situation and what are your answers and what are your tools to get to. And so, um, you know, I think that’s something, you know, that quarterback room does a phenomenal job working together collectively to build those plans each and every week. And so, um, yeah, I think that’s an important aspect of playing football. That’s something that just kind of comes with exposure and experience in terms of getting comfortable with that. Like even from your own playing experience. Yeah, I think it’s just, you know, there’s a lot of different ways to attack a defense. There’s a lot of different tools that you can utilize. Just building out plans each and every week. Um, you know, understand there’s times where the protection is going to be challenged. There’s got to be you may be hot or you may be, you know, sometimes we like say you may be warm. It’s not not hot. You know, we have everyone accounted for, but it’s going to stress us. And so, understanding what what your situation is. Um, you know, where you can deliver the football. Uh, Tyler made some incredible plays in those situations, too. Um, you know, his ability to get out of a potential safety, his ability to move in the pocket a couple times. Um he found a couple checkdowns and some completions. You know, they brought a pressure in and empty and he was able to get an outlet and so um there’s a bunch of different looks of that with Tyler’s um improved footwork. Just where is it kind of on the like is it now does it now look how it’s supposed to look? Like does you know are you pleased with it overall? Does he still have areas to grow in that? How would you kind of just summarize his progress given the the strides that he he’s made? Yeah, Tyler’s playing really good. He’s uh progressing really well. Uh there’s always going to be growth opportunities. You just keep moving the bar each and every week. That’s everyone’s goal. Um he’s done a nice job and so uh he’ll continue to try and grow and evolve and you know, there’ll be things that come up and you address them, you keep moving. Helen, how are y’all doing healthwise coming out of this game? Uh good. Uh no one that uh no one came out of this game that um would have impacted the game potentially this week. And so uh you know obviously there’s plenty of maintenance but um nothing changes from our standpoint. All right. All right. Good to go. Thanks guys. Appreciate you. Thank you. Thanks.

Great win on Sunday
a lot of good from yesterday, i hope the team is studying up this week in preparation to put down the dirty birds.
Heyy Coach: the Falcons love to blitz, prepare to make them pay with the screen game!!
Nice to have a QB that sees the entire field, its been about 5 years since we had that. π Shough will continue to get better each week, I have a good feeling about his ceiling after what I witnessed yesterday. Lets make it 2 in a row against dem dirty birds. Shough em π
WhoDat4Life!
Please please keep AK screen pass in the playbook. Thatβs his bread and butter
Receptions to multiple receivers seems like heβs looking through progressions well.
I love Kellen but hes got a touch of the tism. That answer to the tee shirt question was the longest and most convoluted 'no' ive ever heard. lol
Coach looks like he eats his boogers haa
Wow I can hear the questions amazing
Great win Coach! Keep it up βοΈ
Great win! Would love to see our young guys play even if it means benching Kamara.
