We always appreciate our die hards hitting us up with mailback questions and since they take the time to write them, we like to take the time to answer them. Usually. Honestly. Usually. Honestly, cuz you said you thought Nathan McKinnon was overrated. Sure. Yeah. Roll back the tape and and find find my for one second. Find my answer for one second. You said it with an eye roll. Uh, by the way, before we get started on the mailbag, uh, the Hawks just announced Saturday’s game against the Leafs is the first official Centennial Celebration Night of the year. So, they’ve released a schedule of events. The puck drop is at 60735, so 6. Atrium opens at 3:30. They’re going to have Bobby Hull and Stam Makita’s curve sticks on display, an assortment of Tony Espazito game warning gear, Stam Makita’s trophies that he won during his Hawks career, and a bunch of photo ops and interactive opportunities. At 4:30, the United Center will open. First 8,000 fans to enter get a Tony Espazito bobblehead. 4:45 alumni Q&A. that will be in the atrium uh with Darren Pang, Dennis Seavard, and some family members of those who who played the game. And then they say at 5:30, be in your seats so you can see the whole ceremony MCed by Pat Foley. So if you’re going to the game, at very least, make sure your your grundle is in the seat covered in Mando by 5:30 so you don’t miss any of the pregame stuff. That’s awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I knew it was uh they said last night at the game that they were about to close the the first chapter of the four for the Centennial celebration and I was just like, “Wow, we’re already through the first chapter.” I mean, we’re almost to the quarter mark of the season. But that’s what they say is by the end of the first Blackhawks Centennial chapter, if you’re still in playoff contention, you’re in That’s what I’ve heard. Yeah. They’ve said that for for years now. Um Yeah. I mean, so at Saturday night, a reasonable 6 pm puck drop against the Leafs. Um, you know, they I know Scott Powers and Mark Lazarus wrote about it in The Athletic recently. Ben Pope tallies the attendance every home game. Uh, attendance hasn’t been what it used to be. Uh obviously the sellout streak ended a number of years ago and all that, but um last night’s game, a late game uh against, you know, a team that’s not a necessarily a quote unquote draw, but Devils are a good team, but not not one of those not one of those traditional teams that you see come through, you know, and all that. And it was like 17,000 plus. Good atmosphere, like a really good crowd. So I imagine Saturday against the Leafs, yeah, should be a really great crowd. And no Austin Matthews, no Anthony Star. They’re scared. Yeah, Leafs. Uh, Leafs are hobbling into Chicago. They’ve lost three in a row. They don’t have David Camp anymore. Oh god, what are they going to do? I don’t know. Maybe he’ll sign in Chicago. Help them down the middle. Lord. Um, but uh yeah, I’m I’m really looking forward to Saturday’s game. Like it’s it it feels like a game that again, I want to knock on wood, but it feels like a game like they could they could definitely win. Yeah, definitely. you get the crowd going. Uh you get, you know, a pregame ceremony with Pat Foley. Like I hope I hope the team, you know, feels the juice in the building and and feeds off it. I and I last night the energy considering how late the game started. Loud anthem. Uh Hawks score first. The Conor Bernard on the five on three. The place is up for grabs. Yeah, this is start people are starting to take notice. I think there were a lot of fans who were kind of like h so it looks okay. Hey, I’m going to keep it at a distance. I don’t want to get too excited yet. Maybe I’m not ready to pump up that 20 bucks a month for CHSN just yet, but they see the wins keep coming. They keep having good performances. Conor Bard is playing well, so that excitement is going to grow. It’s all going to roll on top of itself. And uh yeah, let’s hope that uh they get four points from uh Toronto and Calgary. And then you’re feeling really good about things heading into Thanksgiving. Definitely. Thanksgiving. Always feel good about Thanksgiving. I guess we could probably promo by the way. I know it’s a little bit early, but next week, Wednesday, we will have both Tony Granado and Petey on the show. Yeah, not together. Well, not yet. Tony Granado refused. He heard what Petey said about Conor Bernard on Chaos with that jerk and said he can’t he can’t stand uh No. Yeah, that that’s going to be a fun show. Um Pet is going to pay off his his slanderous remarks of Conor Bard with a his penance is complete. what’s making Connor Bernard uh tick this year in a positive way. And then yeah, always great to talk with Tony Granado. Um be a good good chance to kind of catch up with him, get his pulse on how the how the team’s been performing. It’ll be between uh Tuesday and Thursday’s game. So yeah, looking forward to that. Uh and Sheilaga Blackhawks referencing the uh century turn and the family members. He says, “Is Bret Hole coming for the buffet?” Uh Bret Hole did not come for the opening game. It was Bortth Hole. It was like Bert. What was the guy’s name? I think I think it was Bert Hall. Bart or Bart Hall. Bart Hall. I was like, we couldn’t get Brent Hall to show up. I know his daughter his daughter lives in town. Uh our uh our our sales uh f uh employee Amanda is like good friends with Brent Hull’s daughter. Uh get him over here. It’ll be Bort Hole. My son’s name is also named Bort. Yeah. No, I want a I want a real hole. Damn it. All right. I’m sorry. They’re like, ladies and gentlemen, Bart hole. What? Okay. Like there’s no other holes around. H. This is dumb. We get paid for this. H. It’s too hot in here. Okay. All right. Let’s get serious. Enough tom foolery. I could not. I’m sorry. Okay. Uh, I didn’t know I was going to break Mario. All right, Joey, get the show under control. This is your job. First question, please. Oh, yeah. Let’s get to our mailbag, shall we? Yes, let’s do that. Here we go. Here’s the big one. Oh my god. Okay, first quarter seven years ago. Uh, this is from Dying Breed Collectors. Says, “So, not to get too ahead of myself here, at what point is Jeff Flashel no longer the transitional guy and just the guy? I feel like when he was hired, it was treated as if he would just be the next step in the right direction, not the long-term solution. I remember around the time he was hired that the lifespan of an NHL head coach was being referenced nearly every one of your shows, but uh, he looks like a legit NHL head coach, maybe one we should keep around for the long haul. And it’s not just because of the fact that the Hawks are getting points. It’s how they’re playing as a team, how they’ve responded and committed to BLO as a coach, and the fact that literally everybody on the team that matters long term is legitimately playing better than last year. That’s a really good question. And uh it is. I I like it and I look all of us. I’ll I’ll talk about myself first off. We were just kind of like, all right, Jeff Flash, all fine. And and as we did more as the hire was made and we kind of got over the disappoint I it’s not disappointment it’s like underwhelming right cuz you had David Carl in mind and then there were some and then Mike Sullivan was also available air quotes so you had like really really high hopes and then BL kind of felt like a consolation prize but as soon as he spoke and as soon as we started doing our research and as soon as we really laid out the resume it made a ton of sense as a hireer. Yeah. Uh he was David Carl before David Carl. He was the hot coaching candidate and then he so he’s got head coaching experience with the rebuilding team. Then got fired after seven years on roster that was really bad. Goes and and assists with John Cooper and then second NHL stint comes as Hawks head coach and he’s been great. He’s been really really good. Um is he the guy when they eventually win the cup? I think it’s I maybe this is a bit of a copout, but I think it’s a little too early to make that prediction, but so far so good. I mean, there I have very few complaints about anything coaching wise that the Hawks are doing. Yeah, I I I think the early returns on bringing him in have been really positive because they hit the ground running with him. And um I agree it is I mean it’s it’s it’s way too early to say like this is the guy because when Luke Richardson when the team was playing well under Luke Richardson even though they were losing we thought huh maybe he’s not a transitional guy but it’s that that obviously was not the case. Um, but I think, you know, with with with Blashel and and how he’s um stepped in, the mentality he had and the fact that, you know, he came in with a lot of like um self-reflection on his job and performance in Detroit, what he learned in Tampa, how he wanted to approach this differently. It it it felt better having heard from him once he was hired to kind of like get the mindset because I think our initial reaction was like I think we got on the train of like let’s give a new guy an an opportunity a new a new new blood of in the coaching world like give them an opportunity that I think that’s a big part of why David Carl was a lot of um people’s like first first choice so when it was BLO we kind of were like all right so this is just another NHL coaching carousel kind of thing. But sometimes when you get in those situations, the coaches a lot of times they’re just that’s just they’re going to be who they are. They’re not going to change much. You know, a lot of the, you know, old guard of of head coaches that go around the league, they’re just they are who they are. You know who you’re hiring kind of thing. Whereas Blashel, I think he came in and he sounded a little bit like a guy like I’ve learned new things to to bring to being a head coach and um you know can can adapt and and acclimate to a younger roster and has been there before with with the Red Wings and learn to do things differently. So, I think the first the first uh you know 8 17 games we’ve seen with him I I think it leads you to believe like hey something something positive is being built um he’s got a threeyear deal I believe it is. Yeah, I think that’s right. Yeah. So like if he if he sees the end of that deal and then beyond that’s beyond the average life of an NHL coach with with a a single team as was was mentioned in in the question 2.8 eight years I think it was was the number we kept referencing something like that. So um yeah I mean if he if he sees the end of that deal and and reaches an extension which if things go the way that they have through the first 17 games I don’t doubt that he’s going to do that um then then you know for sure you have a guy that I think is is going to be around and can be positively impactful. Uh Reven XL and some people in the chat disagree with the 11 and seven. Reven says the forwards seem pretty gassed by the end of the game. I’m going to challenge you on that. Uh goals by period. Uh the Blackhawks have a 15-8 uh advantage in the first, a 12-9 disadvantage in the second and a 2814. Yeah. Gold difference in the third. The third period is by far their best period. They are doubling up their opponent in third period goals. They So I don’t there’s no evidence of them running out of gas at all. They lead the league in third period goals scored this season. Yes, they last night they entered the third period tied with the Maple Leafs who will be here on Saturday for the most third period goals in the league. They scored twice last night. So they having the most and I think we all want the second periods to be better uh and that’s going to lead to more success. But the way that they start games and the way that they finish games, which were problems in the last few years, this group has got a a good grasp on being able to do that. Now just find a way to make the meat of the sandwich the best part. Yeah. And yesterday’s second was one to one, but the Devils had a significant edge in play in the second. Probably their biggest of the game. And it also stinks that they scored with like 14 seconds left. So it was like you were right there from entering the third with a lead. But yeah, one thing I like about Bashel too is like if you missed yesterday’s show, the postgame, he was talking about Sam Renzel and how Samron was sort of in that Louis Creier extra defenseman role yesterday and all of his own starts were offensive zone starts and he said, “Yeah, you know, we got to get Sam back going. It’s I’m aware of it. We know what what’s going on. Uh it was just his time to kind of take a little break, but he’s ahead of it. like he is seeing things happening before we notice them and he’s adjusting to them and adapting to them and I think he took some heat for sitting Ardum Lefch for the home opener but really since then Artum left has been really good kind of message received so I I don’t I it feels like the buttons he’s pushing have working and and back to the 11- seven thing who are you taking out like Conor Murphy I thought had a really good game last night a bounceback performance definitely and Krevier had two assists like I you’re not taking out Leanov You’re not taking out Renzel. You’re not taking out Vlastic. You’re not taking out Kaiser. You’re not taking out analytic starling Matt Grizzly. And like just to play who? Sam Laughaferty, Landon Slagert. Well, Sam Laughy keeps pulling off moves like that. Yes, exactly. But but I think I mean I think you hopefully in the next couple of days we are in a scenario where the guys who missed last night’s game are all healthy. So then if you’re talking about you got to get Nazar back in the lineup, Kovsky back in the lineup and Dickinson back in the lineup. Like, you know, if you take out Slagger and Laferdy, then there’s your 12 forwards, but who’s the defenseman you’re taking out, right? That’s it. That’s I don’t want to take any of that. So then you Yeah. So then it’s like, okay, does Oliver Moore go back to Rockford? Does Ryan Green go to Rockford? Does Colton Doc sit? Like I don’t know. Then then then we’ll see if if if all the cards are laid out in front of Jeff Blash how he puts it together and how it works. Um because he hasn’t had I he hasn’t really had that. No. You know, I don’t think they’ve been if they’ve been fully healthy, it’s been for one game. Yeah. And it it might have been once after the RLE trade. Yeah. So yeah, I think I think if you give him all these cards of of how the players are are going right now, um he’s got to make some tough decisions. All right, we got to hit a break, but just one more comment. Rattler man says Felino said they were out of gas by the third for scoring. Not sure the 11- seven is fully successful yet. Felina was talking about specifically last night where it’s her first game at home after an extended road trip and even Bard said that like their legs were heavy at practice. Like it was just kind of a Yeah, I don’t think I don’t think it was We’re gassed because we’re playing a man down. I think it was a it was a team issue across the board. It wasn’t just a forwards issue. All right, we are way late for the break zone. We’re going to hit it then we’re going to come back with more of your great mailbag question. Two minutee laugh break. That was the problem. And we’ve got some super chats to get to as well. Back and two on CHL Blackhawks presented by Bet 365. the bet 365 early payout offer. Did you see yesterday, Mr. Terrabosi that Wayne Gretzky had thoughts on Connor Baddard becoming a part of team Canada and basically said Conor Bard is doing a very good job at making his case. I’ve heard of Wayne Gretzky. He was accepted into the Hall of Fame. Dwayne Jetsky. Um what a normal way to talk. He was accepted into the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame’s like, “Who are you?” He applied. All right. He wrote a cover letter and Yeah. Like he opened it like he got into college. like his whole family stood around and they’re like, “Congratulations.” Um, hey, uh, the the way he’s been playing, um, Bard game in and game out has put pressure on on Hockey Canada to make there it’s going to be some tough decisions. And when you have the talent pool that Canada does for hockey players, some really good players are going to be left off. And I mean, look, like Baddard’s what is it now a ninegame point streak? Yep. Um on pace for 125 points this season as you guys pointed out last night. like that’s a that’s a guy that is starting to become undeniable uh when when it comes to deserving a spot and it’s you know he’s in that conversation right alongside Mlin Celibbrini and I think you’ve seen some players for from team Canada especially guys from that foreign nations roster not really playing all that great so it again like the the conversation continues of like how do you construct the roster? Do you want guys that you can trust will elevate their game when you reach that scenario beyond being on the stage of the Olympics or do you go with the guys that through this season have been going and take that momentum into the tournament? It’s it’s a tough uh That’s right. tough line to draw. I yeah I I trend towards some of the guys, you know, if Conor McDavid did not score a point from now until the start of the Olympics, you still take him right to you still take him. I don’t need Travis Kenkne. Yeah. Like if there if there’s guys that you’re like, “Oh, they’re going to play a role and maybe they haven’t been playing that well and they’re they’re on the bubble and then they’re on the bubble with a guy who’s leading the league in scoring.” I’m taking the guy who’s leading the league in scoring. Got to pay your dues. Yeah. Yeah. So, Gretzky said he is earning his way onto team Canada and went on to say it is hard to keep Bard off the team and that’s uh Canada’s grandpa. That’s the man. That’s the guy. Look, I you know I don’t know how who’s the GM of Team Canada. Is it Eiserman? No, it is uh Doug Armstrong. Oh, okay. Right. Uh I believe. But you know, and look, like anytime you see a guy of the profile of Wayne Gretzky, and I’m I want to be very clear here. I’m not specifically talking about him, but anytime you have a made guy on the panel, a guy who is simply being paid for being who they are, you got to take with a grain of salt the level of depth they’re putting into their game watching. And you know what I mean? Like, is Wayne Gretzky sitting home with a yellow pad watching games night after night? probably not. But even if he’s not doing that, if there all you got to do is look at the stat sheet every night to see that Conor Bard is a massive difference maker. And even if that’s too much work for you to pull up the score sheet, a quick NHL league leader is boom, you’re going to see Connor Bard right there with Cabbrini and they should both be there. Yeah, I I I think if if a even if Wayne Gretzky is not that tapped in, I trust his hockey eyes over many others. So if he’s if he’s looking at Baddard and he’s been a guy that’s played at the Olympics and he’s Wayne freaking Gretzky like if Conor Baddard is doing things that impress him for for the expectations and and everything that’s that’s a huge green flag. Yeah, that’s an interesting question right when we talk about Gretzky or anyone that’s a great player that watches the game. The eye test, right? You you can say like they can easily take a pass and we say, “Oh, we could totally believe them.” Maybe they just don’t get like the consistency of like the night toight is this player consistent or not. You’d figure Gwen Gretzky could watch a player for five minutes and know whether he has like, you know, that first step or not or whether he has the speed, whether he has toughness, all that stuff. You could probably figure it out pretty quick. But it’s like the sicko fans like us that kind of drill more in on consistency, right? Is that fair to say? Uh, I would say so. Yeah. Yeah. And look, I I think it’s it’s the same with, you know, with how, you know, the NHL on TNT panel was made in the vein of the NBA on TNT panel, which is now on on ESPN. Yeah. Um, like Shaq and Charles Barkley are the same. Like, are they watching all NBA teams, all players? No. But if you give them a little bit of tape on a certain player and say, “What do you think of him?” I’m going to trust their judgment on on that type of player because of how much basketball they’ve played and seen and absorbed and everything like that. Like they’re almost good at knowing like the broad angle of like this guy’s going to be a player maybe more so of whether he’s a player right in this very moment or not in their development. And I think they can in whatever sport we’re talking about that guys that have played for that long can decipher between oh it’s he’s really talented or he’s got what it takes to be cuz talent only gets you so far. I mean, not to keep I’m not ragging on the guy, but like Lucas Reichel has all the talent in the world, but is yet to put it together at the NHL level. May never put it together at the NHL level. So, there’s more to it than I think like what we’ve seen a difference this year in Bedard from this year to the first two is where he’s going on the ice, how he’s sticking. It’s those little things that the naked eye or the common fan or you know like maybe misses but it’s those those coaches and those players that see those little things that make a difference that have been pounded in their heads for 20 years as players. They see it more than we do and former coaches too. So as Dragnet 35 brings up counterpoint you’d think but how is Gretzky as a coach having an eye for talent and coaching the game. I think they they do run parallel, but there’s also different aspects of it because as we’ve we’ve mentioned before a number of times. Um, and it’s kind of like it kind of goes across um across sports where not always are the superstar superstars the best coaches because they probably haven’t had to rely on or been given a lot of coaching in their playing days. Yeah. So, in in hockey, guys like Gretzky or Denny Sevard here in Chicago, like they may not have been the best coaches because what they relied on was what they had as coaching in some aspects where it’s just like, oh, just go be go be the best player on the ice and just get it done. Um, but like you know in in baseball a lot of catchers are really good coaches because of their perspective of the game and they’re not always um, you know, they they have to worry more about like the managing of an actual game, calling pitches and things like that. In in, you know, basketball and football, a lot of, you know, former quarterbacks become coaches or a lot of, you know, former linemen become good coaches in football. And and and in hockey, it’s a lot of guys that maybe were depth players or role players that end up being good coaches because of how much they have to actually in their playing time get out of film, get out of feedback, get out of drilling things and trying to tendencies. Yeah. Drilling in on that. Also, Gretzky coached the Coyotes in the Yeah, I’m looking at the in the mid 2000s. The rosters are not good. So, they weren’t great. He had uh Shane Don good 73 points. Yeah. Next score was Oolie Yoken inan 42 points 41 points from Steven Reinhrect. These were not good teams. Not loaded. And again it is difficult to hey you know uh just do what I did and make sure and know what’s going to happen five you know five moves before it happens. No right. You gota, that’s why I think guys like you said, like guys like Q, uh, like even Joe Madden like never played Major League Baseball, but was a catcher growing up and like just was a student of the game and and figured it out from there. So, um, anyway, I’m going to take what Wayne Gretzky has to say. Yeah. And because it benefits us, I’m going to believe it this time, right? And then when I disagree with him next time, I’m going to say, “Guy can’t even coach. What does he know, bum?” Absolutely. I’m just going to use his opinions to my convenience. Yeah. Fit the fit the narrative that you want. Is that not what we do every day? I mean, that’s our job. Come on. All right, let’s hit the break zone one more time and then we’re done with break zones. I promise. Was that a taking the temp? That wasn’t a question. It was taking a temp. Okay, we still have lots of questions. Yes, we’ll get we will go through your questions more quickly. We took the temp. We promise. It’s cuz we hit the first break zone late because I’m uh unprofessional. All right. N you’re fine. Break zone. Do it. Hockey season’s back. The United Center has been really, really loud and ruckus the last little bit. And if you want to get out to the UC like our friend Holly did last night, she got a puck from Connor Bernard. Uh, by the way, I I don’t want to keep going back to this 11 and seven thing, but uh, Rattler man said if they played 12 and six last night, they would have had a better chance to win. Well, every forward on a roster played last night. Yeah, they called up Slagger because 11 guys. Yes. So, if you’re if you’re trying to shoehorn 12 guys in there, you’re I mean, the case is going to be made. You have to bring up Nick Lardes. But if you’re bringing him up Nick Artis has not scored in five games, by the way. Yeah, he’s a bum. Um, I’m not saying that, but let’s pump the brakes on like this guy’s NHL ready today. Yeah, let’s but yeah, you don’t need to call two guys up from Rockford just to fit fit out 12 forwards. Um, just to do it like Yeah, I I I the 11 and seven has has yet to uh run its course in my view. All right, sorry. Question time. Uh, it’s super chat. Yeah. Um 2121 says Chris $5 in honor of B of Bart Hole. Thank you. Hopefully Bart is there uh Saturday. I I hope he I’ll take a selfie with him if he’s there. I hope he is. Yes. Do you know he uh he also played football in Canada? Played in the CFL. Oh yeah. Yeah. Is that a true fact? Yes. I look I as as I was dying of laughter from you calling him Bort I looked up his actual name uh and yeah he played he played uh Canadian football as as well as hockey. So he’s he’s been all over the place. I So okay not a Bart hole history lesson but he played six games over three years with the Idaho Steelheads. One game four games one game. Yeah. How does I’m Okay. Anyway, let’s get to Charlie the Bacon Guy has a more uh defined Hockey DB page than Bart Hole. All right, enough. Here we go. Are these Wait, were these games where all the halls were supposed to be like around? I don’t know. Anyways, go ahead. I don’t care either. Okay. Uh Warren Bards, uh two points of inquiry on this mailbag Thursday for you fine gentlemen. Would it be unfair to say that Slagert is becoming this group’s Joey Anderson? Whoop. someone you call up if you have an injury and another prospect isn’t ready, but otherwise is just an AHL talent. Want to answer that one first? I think I think Landon Slagert could be in the NHL. Um, so could Joey Anderson? Well, I think Slagger’s got more skill. Sure. Than Joey Anderson does. I think he’s got I think he’s faster. Um, so I I I think Lannon Slagger could be in the NHL. I’ll say this. If Sam Lafery wasn’t here, that would be Landon Slagger spot. But I think they still want to play him rather than sit him. And that’s why he’s he’s the guy that’s kind of gone back and forth a bit. Um, but I I I I think there’s still an NHL game in there. I just don’t know if it’s going to be here in Chicago as more players who have higher NHL ceilings arrive. That’s that’s where I’m at. And you know, we all love Samuel Savvois, too. But it’s you’re it’s getting hard to find a path for him to the NHL because of all the talent they have forward-wise. Moore’s already here. Lordis is knocking on the door. Canov, BL, West, Nestil, Fondell. Yeah. Like, where does he get his chance? It might not come here. And I think it’s the same story for Landon Slagert, who Jeff Flashel loves Landon Slagert. You talk about a guy who plays winning hockey, that is Landon Slagert. I love Landon Slagger. He went to Notre Dame. Love the guy. Awesome dude. Great hair, fast, good hair, nice guy, all that stuff. Fun to talk to. But when we’re talking about when this team is ready for contention or even competing for a playoff spot, which guess what we are right now, um I don’t know if he has a full-time spot on the roster just is the case for NHL expansion. More NHL teams means Landon Slagert plays in the NHL. I think you and as again as much as I love him, I think you have a higher opinion of him than I do as an NHL player. I think Landon Slagert is a guy. Yeah. All right. Yeah. I I just, you know, I don’t know if you can look at Landon Slagert and say this guy’s not in the NHL. We need more teams. I No, I’m not framing it that way. I’m just saying if there’s more NHL teams, there’s more opportunity and players like him who are probably worthy of being in the NHL, but just numbers game and spots don’t line up. If all teams played five Lions instead of four now, see that’s that’s what that’s what he needs. That’s that’s what the NHL needs to do. Then your forwards will not be tired. Forget this 11 and seven. Let’s go 15 and three. 15 and three. I think Wyatt Kaiser could play 40 minutes a night. Probably. Let’s go. Sure, why not? All right, next part of the question here from Warren Bards. He says, “Uh, while Blasau was hired, when Blash was hired, I believe you all said he was good for this group now, uh, but how you’d probably want someone later like David Carl to get you over the hump this far into the season. And based off your observation, do you think he can act?” Okay, we answered that already. And then side note, I want to thank you guys for all your hard work you put in bringing us Hawks content. I normally am not in the live shows because I save the episodes for work the next day. It’s always my first listen in the morning. I will also be at the game against Calgary next week. Would love to say hello and bring him some homemade beef jerky. Okay. Yeah, we were going to say no, but then you said beef jerky, so we’re going to say yes. I had a discussion uh yesterday with with Big Dave and Matt Peek about and beef. he might have been here. Uh about beef jerky and um just the different varieties, how Slim Jim has kind of got a market on like the meat tubes and like Jack Links has got more of the shredded jerky style. It’s mando on it. You know, you guys are saying like the best words today, by the way. Well, how would you describe a slim gym? It’s a tube of meat, right? It is indeed by definition a tubed meat. Yeah. Stick meat. Stick. Sure. Stick o meat. Yeah, I guess. But tube meats better, I’d say. Do you like the stick jerky or the Chloe, how are you doing? Or the cut. This is normal for our show. Yeah. Um I would So, it’s it depends. If you’re on a budget, the the sticks are us this the tubes are usually cheaper, but I think if you’re looking for like I’m going on a road trip, I want some quality beef jerky for the road. You get the the pouches where it’s, you know, Jack Links or Ultra. Ariano was they sell it in the deli case. Beef jerky. I did see that. Yeah, it’s really good. Yeah. All right. We’ll see you Tuesday. Warm Bards, you are you are now on the hook for uh some jerky. All right. Thank you for the questions. Going to be Is it pocket jerky? Uh like like our pocket bacon. We’ve not had pocket bacon in a while. Just saying. Uh all right. Tom Wormers says, “Is the progress of Lordis Canovven more lucky or did the fact that they are smaller and talented weigh into the decision to pass on Demidov?” I I wouldn’t call their development lucky. Those were those are guys that had like you could see a lot of the talent. I think even going back and kind of looking at how people reacted to Nick Lardis when he was drafted. I know we didn’t have a big a big um scouting report on him. Y but a lot of people were like wow surprised he fell to the third round which he was early third round pick because and I think that was because of his size. He wasn’t the biggest guy but you could see the scoring talent was there and it was on the rise in the OHL. Canerov I think also small Russian like those probably why he slid to the second round but again scout. Yeah, but again that’s like one of those guys that was just like, “Wow, that was a really good pick.” And again, Oliver Moore thought to be around the 910 range and was even talked about like as high as like seven. Yeah. So, I I think I think it’s it’s a I think it’s a a a plus on the scouting side of things to find those guys and to not be afraid to take players who oh no, they’re 18 years old and they’re 5 foot 10. They’re going to be so small forever. Nick Lardis is six foot. Oliver Moore is six foot. That magical line. Yep. You know, Roman Krov’s I don’t think he’s 6 foot, but it doesn’t seem like it’s killing him in the KHL right now. I just I don’t know. Like you look at what Cole Cfield is doing. You look at what Connor Badard is doing. This is such a to me this has become a really archaic way of thinking about hockey. Sure, you don’t want an entire team of 510 forwards. I get that. But to suggest that a guy is 5’10, so his skill can’t translate to the NHL is silly. We have seen it over and over again. Alex Debrink. Yes. And De Brinkit is short and built and stocky as hell. And Martin Sanlie is short and stocky and big. Connor Baddard, huge legs. He he is incredibly built. As his body has matured, like he you can see how much stronger he is now than he when he was 18. Theo Flurry was 5 foot6 and and he’s a borderline Hall of Fame player, right? Like Kane was not big, right? And is a Hall of Fame guy. But if you see Patrick Kane in person in street clothes, you’re like, “Whoa, he is he’s a big guy.” Like, he’s not tall, but he’s strong. He’s, you know what I mean? Like, so it’s even Duncan Keith. Dave Vololan, when I met Dave Volen in person when I was doing my things, I’m like, is he like the basis in a punk band? He’s tiny. Yeah. He’s skinny and but like No, it’s it’s about understanding the game. It’s about the willingness to go where you need to do to go uh to to to succeed in the game and and small players are making it all the time. And I think to the other part of the question about you know Yeah. Dad, those three guys were in that 23 draft, right? Um, so I think when you when we were in that conversation back in the 24 draft in the leadup, the depth of the forward group, I know we were saying, “Oh, there’s not a lot of superstars alongside Bard. There’s a lot of good supplemental players.” So, you would say like you could still go with the superstar forward in Demod, but I think they were looking at the depth of guys that they had, the potential that they had to find somebody like that. Frank Nazar was in the group at that time still. So I think that that probably did play into the fact that they went with Lebanon first knowing that their depth defensively was starting to get a little bit older. Um and also that the 25 draft unless they had won it wasn’t going to produce a top top end defenseman if they were going to be in that lottery spot. Looking beyond the draft they’re at. Yeah. Then that’s what the his predecessor we can say his name. We don’t have the Stan Bowman jar anymore. Stam Bowman would draft year to year to year. And look like some people buy like I’m taking the best available guy and screw it. Let the let the cards fall where they may. But I think Davidson looked at his defensive pool and said I got a lot of guys I like. But I don’t know if there’s a franchise defenseman in this mix. Right. We all love Alex Vic, but is he a one of ones? Probably not. And it was before Sam Renzel Exactly. we realize, oh, he’s ahead of schedule development wise. Yes, exactly. So, and he tried to get both of them. Like, let’s not forget he he there was the opportunity if Pat Verbique doesn’t take Becket Senica and goes with Kaden Lindstöm. Ivan Demdov is very likely a Black Op. Is Senica the ones whose parents like made out when he got drafted? No, that was um was a Coyote’s pick. Wasn’t that Lamaro or something like that? Oh, yeah. Maverick Lamro. Yeah. I mean, that was that was aggressive. Get Stop that. You’re on television. They probably didn’t know that they were on TVG. Your kid was just drafted. There’s a decent chance you’re on television. That’s true. Has he scored his first goal yet? I don’t know. But put your tongue away. Stop it. You know what happens when he scores that first goal, though? You know what’s coming. It’s not That’s That’s That’s not safe. Little brother incoming. Not safe for work. All right. We are off the rails today, man. We need practices. All right. Uh here we go. What do we got next? Another long one. Sprout. Everyone’s talking about how good the kids are this year, and rightfully so, but no one seems to be talking about how much everyone, including vets, are overachieving on shot percentage. Do you think everyone comes down to earth in the next couple of months? Or does this represent a league shiftwide? A shift leaguewide. I can read examples. McKinnon, Neander, Carlson, Celibbrini are around 10% shooting percentage versus last year. Bard is plus five. Capri 10% from last year. Yes. uh Capri off is roughly the same and McDavid is actually a little lower than last year. is a bomb. I think anyone who is a the analytics people all think there is a correction coming here for the Blackhawks and I was told directly. Yes. And I think as we to about the first question of the show about Jeff Flashel when it happens because it will happen there will be a some there will be a slump in here for the Blackhawks at some point. It happens to every team. How do they get out of that? Right. How does Jeff Flash will get them out of that? That will be an evaluation point. But talk about your interaction today if you are comfortable doing so. Well, I’m comfortable. Um, yeah. So, if you if you missed it, uh, all cho.com yesterday, I tapped into my math side of my brain. I got the cobwebs out of there, but I, uh, I went and and dove into this topic, shooting percentage. It’s through the roof for the Hawks. They’re one of the top PDO teams in the league, which is shooting percentage plus save percentage. So Spencer Knight and Arvid Solder room playing the way they are, plus everybody overachieving shooting wise leads to this team being where they are right now, right? Is that sustainable? Probably not. Historically not. But something that caught my eye and and I want to shout out um it’s not gonna really do much because their name is Alias Unknown, but Alias know them unknown uh pointed this out to me uh on the real Kipper and Bourne show with um Nick Ciprios and JT Bourne on Sportsnet. They had uh Steve Velicette on their show who is a former NHL goalie. He’s an analyst with uh uh MSG with the Rangers and he’s the CEO of Clear Sight Analytics. So, they had him on the show. The long and short of it is he has these eight key data points that he looks at for teams that he believes are doing what playoff teams do and don’t do to succeed. Okay, by his words, by those data points, the Hawks are a playoff team by by what they what they break down. One of the things that they focused on was um teams that want to be successful usually average about seven or more high danger shots on goal per game. Okay? And they also average 12 or less low danger shots on goal per game. So the Hawks are averaging 6.64 high danger shots per game, which is 22nd in the league. It’s not high, but it’s right on the cusp of that number. They’re also averaging 11.4 low danger shots per game. So, technically underneath that 12 threshold. It’s 11th 11th fewest in the league, okay? Which low danger shots you don’t want to be wasting your time with. So, that really caught my eye. Also, this the shooting percentage is really high. I listened to this. I tried to like digest it as much as I could. And then uh yesterday’s morning skate I talked to Nick Felino Ryan Donado and asked Jeff Blashel about it and Ryan Donado was like he’s like I have no idea how to answer this because sometimes goals just they’re just fallen for you. Like you know the the old adage like if you’re hot you’re hot, right? Like but he was just like but what does hot mean? does that mean like you’re just getting lucky or are you or are you making the most of your chances? He was he had the adage of they want to be a team that still gets more chances, but he knows that the chances they’re getting and the shots that they’re getting on goal this year, even though they’re 31st or 30th in the league of shots on goal per game, they’re getting them from high danger areas. Yeah, they’re getting them where they know that they can have success with them. Conor Bard, all his goals have come from what is known as the Rockstar zone, which is right in front of right in front of the net and right between the d hash marks. His goal last night was the first one that was outside the hash marks and it was because there was no goalie in it. It was a five on three, right? Yeah. So again, go back, you can go and read at allow.com. Like I I really feel like it’s a concerted effort knowing that they’re not a high possession team that they are making their chances count. Yeah. And they they have the guys and they have the mentality of get to that 10-ft radius around the net. It’s something that Cory Perry, who I know is well remembered for his time in the in Chicago, I asked him about that too when he was here and they were having trouble scoring goals and being around the net. and he said there’s a DNA makeup in some guys where they have the drive and the want to and the willingness to go to that area to score because that’s how you do it in this league. They have that now this team does. So I I I think it’s something that can be sustainable. I think it’s something Jeff Blashel is preaching and they know that they’re taking advantage of and the crash as our friend and yours JFresh uh reached out to me and he said the the the fall the face plant back down to earth is coming for the Blackhawks. I said, “Sure, maybe, probably, but maybe it doesn’t.” And it probably, if it comes, it’s not going to be, “Oh, they suck now.” Right. But they’re not gonna What are they plus 14 goal differential? Like that’s like near the top of the league. So if they get closer to plus five, that’s still pretty good. Yeah. And the thing what’s interesting to me is you said they are 30th in shots per game. Let me it it’s it’s like bottom so bottom bottom five in shots per game yet they’re middle of the pack basically in high danger chances. That is speed. That is when they get the puck, they beat defenders to the net and get in that rockstar zone you mentioned and get those high danger chances fourth lowest per game. Okay. So the the quality they’re generating comes a lot from speed. And like look, we all we look at it, we talk about analytics after every game. We look at analytics every game, part of the game. But before analytics came on board in the NHL, at least in the public sphere, cliches are a cliche for a reason, right? Like pucks on net, bodies in front, like that’s that’s what AI had been for 85 years before analytics came into. It is what it still is to a degree, right? But but what but but what you’re saying what what Cory Perry told you is correct is now you have and the counter Bard point about the Rockstar zone illustrates it perfectly where a lot of Bard’s chances last year were I’m going to try to shoot between a guy’s legs from the faceoff dot or from near the point cuz I’ve got such a great shot and that’s wonderful. He does have those things but he has clearly made an effort to get into that zone. And when you look at the way the Hawks are built and the way the Hawks are coached, it is beaten into their heads to go to the net, get to the net. Look at what Tyler Bertusi is doing. Look at the success he’s having on this team because not only but last year when he was one of the few guys willing to go to the net, right? Yeah. Now it’s like everyone is there and it’s causing the defense to collapse. It’s creating more space for passes and more perimeter. It all it all builds on itself. It’s all cyclical because Bertusi does this teams adjust and that frees up space for somebody else and instead of being so pred predictable and easy to defend as they’ve been in the last few years. Um I look is their current PDIO sustainable? No. No, it’s not likely. Um especially when you consider how good the goalies are playing too like that that will normalize. the shooting percentage will normalize, but getting high danger chances is not a fluke. No, that like pucks going in, sure, I can write that off to a fluke, but I’m not going to do that in terms of high danger chances. You want to finish your No, that’s it. Period. Period. So, one So, a few a few stats that I have in the the article, which again, go to all.com, you can find it. uh rebound goals at five on five this season. The Hawks are tied for third in the league with six. This is and this is before last night’s game. Okay. High danger goals at all strengths, they’re third in the league with 31. High danger shooting percentage again going into last night at all strengths first in the league 26.7%. So if you get four high D if the if the Hawks on average are getting at least four high high danger chances a game, one of them’s going in. One of each of their four high danger chances is going to go in based off that percentage. And look at their power play. We we made a point of it of like they’re not shooting on the power play. They’re not. They’re uh Corsy4 60 32nd in the league 84.9. So, like that’s again that’s that’s trying to shoot the puck towards the net on the power play. They’re doing it the least per per minute. Um shots on goal on the power play per 60 42.9 31st in the league. Goals four per 60 on the power play. Fourth in the league 10 uh 10.7 shooting percentage on the power play leads the league 25%. They’re 22nd in the league with 47 power plays. And going into last night, this so these are the numbers going into last night. They had 47 power play opportunities. They had 48 shots on goal on the power play. But they scored last night. They came into last night’s game four for four in the last two games on the like they’re getting those chances and they’re making the most of them. And it’s a point that um uh Valette made on the on the podcast which I I find it uh real Kipper and Bourne from Tuesday. Um, a point that they made is just like how people how the league and to the question about the, you know, the league shooting percentage, how the league has changed the idea of shooting. And you look at goalender save percentages, how it’s gone down leaguewide. Last year’s last year’s uh average save percentage was like 9005 9006, something like that. We were just talking before the show about you saying like people are looking at Cam Talbot and you read his numbers and John Gibson’s numbers for the Red Wings 8.82 and 895, right? Woof. Yeah. But we’re we’re we’re seeing Harvard Sodderman and Spencer Knight in the 900s and that’s like a way above league average and how it’s been. The idea of shots shots shots from Little John is not not the norm anymore. teams like Dallas and and Carolina that volume shoot, it’s not the norm. A lot of teams, not just the Blackhawks, but a lot of teams are setting themselves up for we want the highest percentage shot taken, not the quantitative shots. Put 10 on net, one’s going to go in. They they want shooting percentage like the Blackhawks in those high danger areas. One out of four. So, well, and like if you watch the Hawks power play and and you’re right, they don’t shoot the puck, but recently they’ve gotten a lot better about getting into the zone, setting up, moving the puck once in they’ve got Right. Once they’re in and they’ve got This has driven me nuts over the last few years is the inability to keep the puck in at the blue line. Yeah. Now with Renzel and Lev, both those guys excel at that. And Kaiser’s really good at too. I think it’s power play time, but he’s really good at it. like you are having sustained power play zone time now and they’ve got enough skill now with I mean Bard, Terravinan, Bertusi, Nazar, Burakovski these are top six players on every team in the league pretty much right for the most part and then you’ve got Renzo and Lev who project to have high-end offensive talent and ability if they don’t already have that you’re able to move the puck instead of a puck going between a guy’s feet or just off the heel or just away, they’re on the tape. So, I don’t get as frustrated they’re not shooting because there is an opportunity to to pass yourself into that ideal scoring chance and they’ve done a really good job at doing that. So, is this part particular pace sustainable? No. But I think the fact I really like that thing you did. It’s great work to showing that despite the number of chances, number of shots rather, the high danger chances are still very, very high. That illustrates to me speed and it illustrates to me talent. And those things are not going away for this team. Yeah. And and Jeff Blashel made the point when I when I asked him about it. He said, um, you know, you look at shots on goal and the discrepancy that most games the Blackhawks face. He says people will say to him, “Oh, you guys got outplayed.” Was like, “Yeah, but if you look at the scoring chances, they were even.” So getting out shot does not equal getting out. Even last night was like 35 to 21, I think, in shots on goal. Like what was like high danger was High Danger was a little lopsided last night. Was it like Yeah, Spencer Knight played pretty well. Okay. But I I I think of the um the Detroit game. They were outsh shot 46 to 20 and they won 5 to1. Like Yeah. I don’t like Arv Solder had a really good game, but like he made a huge save on Dylan Lurin. Yeah. But there weren’t like a ton of like oh my god, how did he Yeah. standing on his head. That is that is the Blackhawks making the most of their of their chances and their opportunities. We should go to overtime. We are going to go to overtime. Yes. Just for a few minutes. So, if you’re watching on any of the fast channel outlets, uh, head over to allcoo.com where you can continue to watch the show and you can read my article and all all the Jay’s stuff and all the great stuff at all. Yeah, I got something coming on Bertusi and Bluel tomorrow morning. So, become a die hard. Yeah. Um, I wanted to get to this. Yes. because our video went viral, ran ran wild of uh Connor Bard speaking highly of his rival I mean best friend Mlin Celibbrini and now courtesy of Shang Pang out there in San Jose. M Celbrini returns the favor. I have not listened to this. I just saw the caption so I imagine this is uh Mlin Celbrini talking about Conor Bard and his success. Yeah, I mean we train together in the summers. Um, especially this past summer, I thought we uh we got we spent a little more time kind of skating with each other. Um, yeah, I think we’re great friends. Yeah, let me know what I’m sorry. What did you learn about Connor this summer that maybe you didn’t know before? Um, [Music] he’s way more into football than I thought he was. He loves football. Bears fan, huh? Yeah, I think he’s a big Bears fan. Yeah. All right. Um, they have the same um Yeah, they do. That’s Well, it’s probably because they’re best friends and they spend a lot of time together. I mean, no, they hate each other and they’re rivals. They’re going to fight. Yeah, they’re going to they’re going to throw a broken uh pool queue on the floor at the offices of Hockey Canada and say one of you makes the team. Yeah. I wonder if we have turned the corner on the Probably not. I haven’t looked at the comments on any Bard highlights lately, but it feels like people are coming around to the like, hey, wait, maybe they’re both really good, and it doesn’t have to be one versus the other all the freaking time. You know what’s funny? I saw a tweet last night about Gretzky’s uh comments about Baddard, and they were like, “We get it. Baddard’s good. Get off his nuts.” Like, so we’ve come full circle. Everyone’s hat everyone hates Bard now because he’s too good and everyone’s talking about it. Great. Awesome stuff. Yeah, it’s that’s good stuff. Uh, by the way, we should uh someone threw in the chat Brennan Dylan was fine for that hit on Tyler Bertusi. That was a trash. The more I see that, the more I hate it. He’s a He had a vendetta last night. Yeah. So, the list, put him on the Pudwack list, Joey. Yeah. A lot of He’s on there now. A lot of people were like, I’ve never heard of Brendan Dylan, but now I hate him. There you go. I I don’t blame you. All right, we will be back uh Saturday. I’m going to practice tomorrow, so we will have video and all the news from practice. Uh but then Saturday 6:00 Hawks and Leafs, we tweeted out the schedule of events for Saturday’s game. So if you are going and you didn’t hear, remember everything I said. It’s right there at cho_hawks. Uh key message, be in your seat by 5:30 on Saturday so you don’t miss a ceremony. But atrium opens at 3:30. see some memorabilia. Lots of great stuff going on Saturday. So, don’t miss it. We will talk to you after the game Saturday. We got really into some great hockey conversation once we got past all the boards. I know. Like really like the last segment was really was really great, hard-hitting stuff. I I I dare any hockey podcast out there to have the range that we do. Exactly. Right. Yeah, Joey, that’s a VOD, baby. That’s a That’s a VOD. That’s a VOD. That’s a open challenge. That’s a John Cena open challenge to anybody out there. All right, we will talk to everybody tomorrow after Hawks. Nope. Saturday after Hawks and Leafs right here on the CHGO Blackhawks podcast presented by Bet 365. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

  1. we said the most important offseason acquisition for the hawks, more important than bringing a player via signing/trade, was the coaching hire. and even if blash ends up just being the transition guy, kfc hit a homerun.

  2. Hawks should beat the Leafs based on how the Leafs are playing and their injuries. But, they gotta watch out as I'm sure they're gonna play desperate in an attempt to not lose 5 straight. Hawks need to bring it!

  3. We do not have the greatest depth at forward position at NHL level. And we do have decent depth at defense and goalie. This is another reason playing 11/7 works for the Blackhawks. I personally love coaching/managing the team you have. Not just doing the traditional thing just because thats the way its always done and thats the way everybody else wants you to set a lineup. Good on Blashill.
