You can already imagine how the Hughes trade is going to play out.
Significant amount of the return value will be a good, relatively young roster player who management will tout as a pillar of a core that can be back in the playoffs quickly. The player will be good but not nearly good enough to have that kind of impact.
The picks we get will already be earmarked for a trade for another roster player who is similarly touted as a key part of a team that can be competitive quickly. That player will be good but again not nearly good enough to have that kind of impact.
We will miss the playoffs again. We will not be sellers. We will be told we have a good core in place still, they just need to add via trade in the offseason. We will miss the playoffs again. We will not be sellers.

I have been a JR/PA truther to this point. I believe we should do all we can to maximize our chances of winning while we have a generational talent like Hughes. I’ve disagreed with a couple transactions they’ve made but for the most part i think they’ve done about the best they can in building a competitive team around Hughes considering where we started and what we’ve dealt with, like Miller.
They’ve lost me now. Continuing to retool if we lose Hughes is the absolute wrong direction and it sucks to know that is the direction now. You stock up on as many picks/prospects as you can, suck for a few years, and get back in the saddle with a properly rebuilt team in 2030. We’ve been trying our best to be competitive every single year I’ve been a fan going all the way back to at least the WCE era beyond which I have no memory. We struck lightning in a bottle with 3 HOFers in 2009-2012 but it’s been a steady plateau of mediocrity since then. Time to do it right.
