Now, I know what some of you Cubs fans might be thinking. King, the Yankees reliever, but we need to look at the complete picture because this isn’t a play for the bullpen. Jed Hoyer sees what King has done since becoming a full-time starter. When he went to San Diego in in the Juan Sto trade, he became one of the most effective starters in the league. In 2024, we’re talking 30 starts, a 2.95 erra, a solid 27.7% strikeout rate against an 8.7% walk rate. Those are front of the rotation numbers, folks. He was on track for a massive contract. And 2025 started the same way. In his first 10 starts, he had a 2.59 ERA with even better underlying stats like FIP and XR. He was dominant. So why is he available risk and this is where the analysis needs to get deep and that’s what I’m bringing you. At the end of May the Padres’s put him on the IIL. Initially it was diagnosed as right shoulder inflammation. Later the team reclassified it as a pinched nerve. The problem was nobody seemed to know the real severity. King himself publicly expressed his frustration in June, saying he’d wake up one day barely able to do baseball activities and the next day feel almost 100%. That is a gigantic red flag for any team thinking about investing millions. He ended up missing nearly three full months of the season. When he finally returned in August, everyone in San Diego expected him to anchor the Padres’s rotation down the stretch. But that return lasted exactly two innings, and it wasn’t the shoulder. It was his left knee. Another trip to the IIL. Although the MRI showed no structural damage, he missed another month. He returned for good in September, but he wasn’t the same pitcher. In four starts, he posted a 6.11 erra over just 15.2 innings, giving up six home runs. The velocity was there, but the command and confidence were not. He did make one playoff appearance, dominating in relief. Three strikeouts in one inning, but the questions about his durability as a starter are real and significant. This is the dilemma the Cubs front office is evaluating right now. So, what’s the play here? Why would the Cubs be willing to bet on a pitcher with that massive injury red flag? The answer lies in what the Padres’s did. San Diego, a team reportedly needing to cut costs and sitting dangerously close to the luxury tax, offered King a 22 Odin $25 million qualifying offer. Qo, you don’t do that if you think his shoulder is finished or if the risk of him accepting is a financial disaster. The Padres’s are betting he’s healthy and at worst he accepts and becomes a valuable midseason trade chip. If he declines, they get a draft pick, though it’s a low one after the fourth round because they are luxury taxpayers. But here’s the kicker that Mooney and Sharma reported and which my sources confirm. The Cubs are willing to forfeit the draft pick and international bonus funds required to sign a player who rejected the QO. This is significant. It doesn’t just apply to King. It applies directly to the other big name on the Cubs radar, Dylan CE. CE also received a QO from the Padres’s and we know the Cubs have been monitoring him. The willingness to pay this Qo tax shows Hoya is big game hunting and not just bargain shopping. But King and Cease aren’t the only options. I’m hearing the front office is very interested in NPB star Tatsuya Imi who is expected to be posted next week. He’s a righty with electric stuff. Furthermore, don’t rule out restarting talks with the Marlins. Remember last off seasonason’s negotiations? Those could be revisited. Sandy Alcantara under contract through 2026 and Edward Cabrera arbitration control through 2028 are names that keep coming up internally at Wrigley. And of course, there’s the possibility of Shoto Imanaga returning whether by accepting his own Qo or negotiating a new perhaps shorter term deal. Now, let’s talk about what really matters, the money. The Cubs are in an absolute position of power. According to Roster Resource, the current projected payroll is around $158 million. That is about $50 million below where they finished 2025 and roughly $75 million below the first luxury tax threshold of $244 million. The only long-term contract on the books past 2026 is Dansby Swanson’s. Think about that. The flexibility is total. There isn’t a single free agent on the market the Cubs can’t afford. If Tom Rickettts decides to write the check, the only limitation this winter will be self-imposed. They have the resources to add King and another big name if they choose.
