Doc Rivers Postgame Press Conference | 11.14.25

I mean, before the game you you were like, “Okay, not going to get too into it. It’s been a couple games, but you have a starting lineup change, so I guess we’ll start there.” Why go? I just thought we needed the size defensively. Um um you know, um I love Cuz with that group because when Giannis gets trapped, Cuz is the cutter now. Uh and we leave Miles out where the five is uncomfortable. That really paid dividends in the overtime or fourth quarter. That’s where Miles got those threes. So, and then I just saw the defense a part of it. Um, so was that was that one move the trickle down all the way to sort of brand new bench lineups and combinations? Uh, I had decided I was playing Gary Harris no matter what. I just thought uh we’re looking at guys and I kept thinking, man, he’s I know he can defend and he has a high IQ. He’ll find ways to get shots and he did that. So, um, our rotations got messed up because of the fouls and the the extended minutes in the first half, but I liked it overall. Um, and I guess just finally for Gary to sub him in late game. Uh, he hasn’t played with a lot of those guys at all. Um, it looked like there was a miscommunication to set up Coniple’s wide open three. So, just I guess the thought to put him in that spot when he hasn’t been in those spots at all with any of those. Yeah, we went over and shoot around. So, I mean, we went on with every guard, so we wasn’t worried about it. He just messed it up really. And we messed the same play up only 15 times. So, I I wouldn’t sing Gary out, honestly. I thought uh AJ Green got a lot of that. Um GT, I thought we really struggled with one play, the middle pick and roll play. Um and I think it was all of them. So, uh I think it’s 22 turnovers tonight. Yeah, that’s what hurt us. Yeah, they had what 13 14 more shots and the more free throws, too. So, it’s probably like 16 more times down the floor. We had to shoot 65% uh to win the game. I mean, to shoot 65% and you go in overtime is saying a lot. Um I thought the second half, I will say this, I thought that our rebounding got way better. Um I think they had what, eight or seven uh offensive rebounds. I think they had three more for the rest of the game, including overtime. So, we solved that problem. Uh, but the turnover problem, and I thought, you know, I bet I can count 10 unforced turnovers that we didn’t need to have. Um, and we’ll clean that up. Uh, with Kooz’s cutting, ju just you guys kind of figuring out the spacing where he was going to be the guy that flashes to open space. Um, what does it say about maybe Cuz that you figured it out and that everyone on the team just kind of found their spots and Yeah, but that’s what he’s been doing anyway. So, it’s not nothing new for him. Uh, he’s just did it this time with the starters. Um, we felt strongly like we like Miles diving, but Miles is a great three-point shooter. So, I kept looking at we’re taking Miles off the line where a five now is uncomfortable. It gives Giannis more space. I just thought it was the right way to do it. Uh, Giannis said, what is it? 18 assists at the end of it. Um just his his willingness to to take that double team and then even to deal with what that run and jump kind of trap that you’re sending out. Yeah, we told him you knew it was coming. You know, Charles was here. You know, uh Bud did it when we played him. So, you know, they’ve probably seen Giannis play the most and they think that’s the most effective way to guard him. Uh the difference is we have way more shooting. And so in some ways, well, in that one stretch, we literally told Giannis to just walk down to the post and we’re going to get threes and that’s all we did. Ryan made a couple. So that kind of helped our offense. Um just Ryan’s willingness to take big shots late. I think he has the three is another, you know, he’s just he’s courageous. He’s tough. Um kind of lost his composure for like 60 seconds when he got the fifth foul. Was awful call. Um, and he like yelled at me. He’s like, “Tell him.” And I’m like, “What do you want me to tell him?” You know? Uh, and then he switched AJ on mellow cuz he was I mean, he lost his brain for like 60 seconds and then he caught himself and then he made a shot and that just tells you like how tough he is. He gathered himself and came down that next play and I think that’s when he made the three. So, um, he’s been great. All right. Thanks, guys.

  1. you cant have bobby out there with 3 guards, if you play bobby it has to be not as the primary rim protector he has to be more of a small forward, he doesn't guard the lane anyway

  2. Alllllright, we are getting closer doc. Defensive boards happened. Somebody ask this man why he has instructed the guys under no circumstance should they go for an offensive board? lol

  3. When I saw Gary Harris on the court I thought Doc might as well be playing 4 guys. My first impressions about Gary Harris were wrong, did get lucky on the second 3 he made, but he can tell people what he wants. Played well defensively had steal and deflections, no fouls I remember moved his feet stayed in front of the player he was defending. Very impressive. Miles was off the charts. Playing with Giannis he's going to get a lot of good looks especially when a team decides they're going to double Giannis as soon as he gets the ball. When you have Miles, Giannis, and Kuz on the floor the defense has problems not only with numbers but also with size, you don't double Giannis Giannis will score, you do double Giannis you have Kuz on the cut, and Miles on the perimeter, and where's the defenses 4 and the 5 at? Everybody contributed. I was impressed with Charlotte's discipline on playing D on Giannis. To be covering a shooter, and leave him to help with Giannis when you know Giannis is going to make a move and pass it back just seems like it would be a counter intuitive assignment. Giannis played smart distributing the ball. Good game plan by Charlotte, just based on the logic that this same team minus Giannis just got blown out, so if we take Giannis out the game and force the rest of the team to best us we'll win. Of course what you have to do to take Giannis out the game completely changes what's available to the team you beat the other day. It's early in the season, good to find things you can build on, really need to clean up some of the TOs. Having Giannis, Ryan, Kuz who are all so good in iso and can get to the paint is a problem, especially when you have Miles setting screens and popping, and then AJ, Miles, and either Ryan or Kuz on the perimeter depending on who's involved in the action. I like that, it's exciting to see someone as talented as Kuz is and has been, settling into the game.

  4. Better rebounding. And the shooting is great. The accuracy is kinda ridiculous. The only thing you need to do is shoot more. That means less turnovers. 22 is way too many.

  5. bobby for some reason has lost his rebounding prowess and right now our rebounding is our biggest weakness. Offensive board s are killing this team. We need rebounding more than scoring right now. If bobby can't rebound , trade him for a defensive player that can be an aggressive rebounder and defensive player that can switch.. he is still a black hole most of the time anyway on Offense.
