Uh, and if you want to be an everydayer, all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. And today we’ll be talking about these Sharks uh 2 to1 overtime win as they somehow do it again. Uh, grind out another game that they probably didn’t deserve to win, but they find a way to get that W. Uh, so we talk about Asgrov and Celabbrini. Ascarov keeping the sharks in it. Celebrini with his magic as uh he assists on both of the goals for the San Jose Sharks. We’re gonna talk about the Winberg line and how special it was tonight as it uh dominated dominated the Capri off line. Plus, we’ll dig into those numbers this game where it doesn’t look as ugly as it should have, but this game could have gone way differently for your San Jose Sharks. So, before we get to all that, I do want to let you guys know that today’s episode uh is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right. Um Ascarov and Celbrini. CBrini and Ascarov. Uh again, a a team that is uh two guys who are literally dragging the San Jose Sharks kicking and screaming to game wins in games that they probably don’t deserve. And I think tonight the the best way to describe like this game if you didn’t watch and I know with an ESPN plus game, it’s uh you know, unfortunately excludes some people with it, but imagine me doing this podcast, right? and any any you know listener any who’s listened more than once uh right three segments right first segment middle segment third segment what if I just slept for the first two segments and then I came back for the third segment because that’s literally what the Sharks did in this game other than Ascarov um they just they looked very sleepy to start like it they were like just couldn’t get generate any offense in this game um other than the Wenberg line just a step slow and everything. Dumb turnovers, dumb penalties. I’m looking at you, John Clingberg. Uh just a a horrible kind of start. Like Sh definitely like they didn’t have their A game, they had their B game. Like this was like a C minus game. This was like I woke up late uh for the test and I rolled out of bed uh and showed up type of game for the Sharks. But they passed. And that right now that’s all you can do is just try to pass as many of these tests as you possibly can. Uh but let’s start with Ascrov who again like wasn’t even supposed to start. Uh Nadulkovich was scheduled to start. Um but according to to Shangpang uh apparently had a family matter and he’s actually heading home to deal with the the family matter. So, uh, Ascarov found out he’s going to be starting in a couple hours before that and basically he was like, “Okay.” And like Ascrov just came in and did Ascarov stuff. But yeah, Nadokovic is dealing with the family matter. He’s heading home to deal with it after the game. So, we’ll see what the Sharks do there if they need to. Emergency recall uh Scarrick from the Cuda who’s playing really well tonight uh with for them. But um so we’ll just kind of keep an eye on that, keep a pin on that. But I I I think it’s safe to say Ascar’s probably going to be starting Thursday’s game against Calgary, which we could be having a Ascrov Wolf game and 100% sign me up for that. But still, um so thoughts and prayers. Hopefully everything’s okay with with with Nadulkovich uh and his family and whatever’s going on with that. So just hoping that everything, you know, uh everything turns out okay for him. So, but uh back to Ascrov who was uh absolutely outstanding tonight, especially uh early on in this game when the Sharks just kind of really couldn’t generate anything any sustained offense. And uh he faced in the first period at uh in all situations. The Wild got a power play, but um 18 scoring chances in the first. So, the Wild ended up with 23 scoring chances in the entire game. 18 of them came in the first two periods. uh 11 high danger chances out of the Wild’s 13 high danger chances came in the first two periods. Uh he was the a big reason or the reason why this game was 000 and one- nothing at the end of the first period. At the end of the second period he was continues to be absolutely out like lights out outstanding for the strikes. And yes, he’s going to give you gray hair anytime he comes out of the crease to to touch the puck. U because that’s part of the ask, right? And it’s not a it’s not a flaw. It’s a feature with Ascarov. So, but 6213 with overtime tonight, right? 28 saves on 29 shots, one goal allowed, expected goals allowed 304, 966 save percentage, uh seven of seven on the high danger, five of five mid danger, and 16 of 17 low danger. Even the goal um that was scored on the power play was a ridiculous pass from Zukarella like across the seam there. Uh like you you know the defense like unfortunately they’re kind of stuck up there. I think Ekan was probably a little bit higher than he you’d probably want him to be in that situation, but um just a an absolute like and he even got over in time and just missed saving that like uh Ascrov has really settled in after a you know bumpy start to this season. Uh this is the Ascarov, right? This is the prince who was promised from Asgar. This is this is what we were hoping for. Is he going to be at a 960 say percentage uh the rest of the season? Probably not. Uh but if he plays like if he continues to play like this, the Sharks are going to continue to steal more and more games that they uh probably have no business winning. And sometimes, you know, uh we’ve we’ve seen it, right? The Sharks been on their fair share of of getting goalied a bunch of times. And you know, right now the Sharks have a combination of a goalie who’s redot and uh a budding superstar in Mlin Celebrating tonight. First two periods again kind of sleepy didn’t really look like himself. Uh they came out for the third period and this was a a different team and Minelbrini a big part of of what the Sharks did in the third period, right? um getting, you know, draws up, you know, he gets they they get the power play there. Um and then he the passing on that power play, right? That tic-tac-toe uh just absolutely ridiculous. And Will Smith, right, that that just like uh chemistry bonded pair between Will Smith and and Mlin Celbrini where they just know where the other one’s going to be. Um, right. And like just beautiful pass from from Celabbrini to get it over to Will Smith who gets the Sharks on the board and ties the game. But then overtime, right? And that that’s that’s the great thing now about uh having Melbourne on your team, right? Is you you just believe he’s going to make it happen, right? And you know, watching, you know, the greats, right? you watch, you know, Nathan McKinnon or Sydney Crosby or Conor like whoever, right? Conor McDavid or whoever, you know, your your personal great player, right? And anytime they stepped up like when again when the team needed them the most, they they stepped on and they they just found a way to make it happen, it’s it’s becoming expected of Melbrini and he continues to to deliver and he did it again tonight, right? playing two minutes in overtime in a game where again didn’t really feel like he he had his agame especially early but guy like players like Melbrini they can make it happen even when they’re they’re not playing their absolute best um Dickinson gets the uh you know good breakout from Dickinson to get it to Celbrini who’s just wide open there um and then Celabbrini again like the end of the shift there he’s been out there for, you know, I think it was close to two minutes there. Uh, and then just gets the pass to Colin Graph. And we’ve seen, if you’ve watched the Barracuda last year in the playoffs, you’ve seen Colin Graph on that exact same play be able to uh finish it. And congrats to Colin Graph for finishing that and, you know, scoring a big goal there, getting that overtime goal for for Graph, who’s uh got promoted in this game to the first line with Smith and Cellrreeny. So, um, again, sustainable No. Are we going to take it? 1 million%. As your San Jose Sharks are now in a playoff spot. Uh, as we’re recording this, uh, basically if the Conucks lose tonight, uh, which they’re losing as I’m record watching, uh, if the Canucks lose, they’ll and the Conucks and the Kraken actually both lose. Uh, the the Sharks will end the night in a playoff spot right now. So, because the Pacific is just everybody jumbled together right now. It’s it’s ridiculous. But anyway, um I it’s it’s such a weird world to live in where you’re the Sharks are in a potential playoff spot here. But uh yeah, they cracking. Yep. So, um man, what a world we live in. Uh we’re going to talk about the Wenberg line. Uh they were absolutely outstand like I I cannot sing the praises of the Wedberg line enough tonight as they took on the Capri off line and they took their lunch money. Uh we’re going to break that down here in just one second. When I’m hydrated, everything just works better. My focus, energy, mood, even my skin. That’s why I’ve been using Drip Drop. Uh so we’ll keep riding this train. Of course, we’ll be uh covering the best prospect pool in the NHL. Well, Barracuda stuff as well. Uh and interviews got an interview uh should be coming out on Thursday. Uh so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So uh the Alex Wenberg line tonight was uh really good. So we know Wenberg line like the Wenberg line has been the Sharks top shutdown line, right? Um, and going back to the Colorado game where where after uh the game, Ryan Worovski said like the thing he likes about this line is that they’re given the hardest matchups. Like we knew this line was going to be given the uh Capri off line. They’re given the hardest matchups, but the way that they play defense uh is they make you have to play defense. Very much part of my defense is for nerds. Go score points. you the best way to play defense is to not have to play defense. And when you do, right, be good at it. But, uh, right, you can’t sit in your zone for, you know, a minute and a half, uh, and just expect a a top line like Capri off to just not eventually score, right? That they’re too good. But tonight, the So, William’s return, we had Ekwin, Kurv, and Wenberg, that line reunited tonight. And I know we normally do the lines later on, but uh these guys were were absolutely insane tonight. They played 1233 of five on five. 22-2 shot attempts at five on five. Uh the Sharks had 42 shot attempts. Uh as a team, this line had 22 of those shot attempts. Ah, absolutely insane. So, 22-2 shot attempts. Um, 11-2 actual shots. Again, the Sharks team tonight uh didn’t crack 20. Did they crack 20? I forget what the I’m pulling up right now. Uh, they right this the Sharks team could not uh generate a ton of offense tonight. Um and uh total sorry the Sharks cracked 20 shot attempts or 20 shots on or I’m looking at sorry 18 18 shots actual shots. This line had 11 of them. Um expect goals were 72 to 0.15 uh 9 to2 scoring chances 6 to1 high danger chances. Uh, and this line was absolutely taking Capri off, Marco Rossi, and Matt Zukella’s lunch. Uh, and they got matched up and also facing Zeb William and Brock Faber. So, uh, William Ecklund, you know, and, uh, five on five when he was on the ice, the his most the people he played the most were Zeb William, Brock Faber, uh, Carell Capri off, Marco Rossi, and Matt Zukarella. And they were dominating these guys. This is a big reason why the Sharks were able to win this game, even though they gave up a ton of power play opportunities. And if you watch the preview, we we talked about how the Wberg line is gonna have to be big because this Wild team, while they generate offense, they struggle to finish. And it’s be this the Marco Rossi Capri offline is the only line that can really score on a uh consistent basis. And the Sharks took this line out. That’s why you saw this Wild team. While yes, they were able to generate offense, they just they struggle to score. And this line has become the Shark’s secret weapon, right? Is because they are able to not only take on the tough matchups, right, of of playing the other team’s best best lines, they’re able to turn those into positive lines, like positive shifts. Um, and I I speak I think that speaks to how great Wenberg has been this season, how great Ekkin has been this season, and Kurishv who’s really found his role with this team. And that there that then again allows Celibbrini Smith, Tapoley to go out and face a little bit easier matchup typically uh and be able to go out and kind of, you know, do their thing, right? And and make those highlight plays and create those game-winning goals or those game tying goals or whatever they, you know, they end up doing. It’s because this Winberg line is so effective uh at doing their job and tonight was a a big reason why, right? Um because it felt like every time that Lion was on the ice, they were generating and they were creating offense and uh the other Lions unfortunately just couldn’t kind of keep up with them and and build off of it. But, uh this Wenberg line has been absolutely outstanding for the San Jose Sharks. And um yeah, like the the goalending we talked about, right, uh earlier this week, the goalending has been outstanding is is probably the biggest reason why the Sharks are winning these games because you went from uh whatever happened at the beginning of the season goalending wise to now the Sharks goending has been rock solid. Um, but the emergence of this Wenberg line here really it just gives the Sharks a one-two punch and it gives Ryan Warski just that ch extra like chess piece, right? or you could have the Wenberg line and you know what if it’s the McKenna line if it’s you know the Capri off line whichever line it is we feel like our guys are going to win this matchup and it frees up Celabbrini to have to go get to go do other things and take advantage of other teams lines here because uh not like I’m not saying like you don’t like you know Celabbrini couldn’t win those matchups as well but again it just it frees it up and it allows Celabbrini to take a little bit of pressure off him that way he can go and just focus on generating offense as a team that’s yes the offense has been really good for the Sharks but the last couple weeks like during this stretch here right they’ve been having to win a lot of these games you know two to one 3 to1 type of of situations so every every advantage that you can get uh in these close scoring games goes a long way and celebrating playing uh celebrating Smith getting to play against lesser competition uh put into a good position to succeed because of the Wenberg line. It go it it’s really why you and then you see the third line build off of it, etc., etc. Big reason why the Sharks are able to to especially in the third period generate uh offense. So, um we’re going to dig into the numbers of the game. Um you know, uh kind of look at how the rest of the lines perform. We’ll talk about Colin Graph’s uh promotion, maybe if it’s a long-term thing or if it’s just kind of a line blender issue tonight. So, uh, we’ll get to that here in just one second. Plus, you usually hear from the winners and with the Sharks being winners, uh that means I get to make an appearance more and more on it. So, uh find NHL game night on lockdown NHL on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast. Okay. Um let’s dig into the numbers. So, we kind of touched on a little bit, but still uh five on five for this game. Ended up being much closer than you thought, but that’s because of the Sharks really strong third period uh where they were able to to kind of drag themselves back into the game. But even looking at the other ones, like the Sharks were were it’s kind of opposite of what the Sharks have usually done, right? Where not like they’ve always been kind of like a quality over quantity. I mean, again, tonight the quantity wasn’t great. Um, but they were more of that tonight of let, you know, just kind of getting shots off and stuff, but just not getting as as many of the quality chances that we’re used to seeing from the San Jose Sharks. But, uh, 47 47 of five on five. Uh, 46 to 42 shot attempts, uh, in favor of the Wild. I was a little surprised when I saw that. I think uh kind of speaks to one the wild struggles at five on five offense. Um so that way like you you couldn’t see them just kind of pull away from the Sharks like if the Sharks were facing a much more potent offense like this thing probably goes sideways tonight, right? But um 46 to 42 shot attempts. Uh 52 to 52.27 to 47.73 Cory4 in favor of the Wild. Um actual shots at five on five was 21 to 15, 19 to 16 scoring chances, 10 to 10 high danger chances, and 2.12 to 1.97 expected goals four. Uh again, the Sharks in the third period though really found that extra gear. Uh they had 18 to 16 shot attempts at five on five, seven to five scoring chances, 4 to2 high danger chances um and 77 to point4 expected goals four. So they were even especially after the goal, right? How often have we seen that you know that this team scores a goal and they sit back? No, we saw them continue to press and try to win this thing in in regulation, right? And kind of try to get that second goal uh there. And I think that’s why you saw especially in in overtime the game kind of continue uh you know the continue to go the way of of the Sharks there because of they weren’t just content like hey let’s just get to overtime. They wanted to try to end this thing in regulation, right? And I think that’s a the mark of a a a good very you know we’re still very young team but I think that those are good traits to see, right? That’s something that kind of killer instinct. you’re starting to see that that come out here a little bit with the Sharks. So, um still a long way to go, but uh I love what we see there that with that. So, for the lines, uh like I said, uh the the Wenberg line was was absolutely ridiculous. Go see segment two. Uh Will Smith celebrating to fully played 840 6 to 12 shot attempts, 0 to7 actual shots. uh 0.56 to 0.59 expected goals, four two to nine scoring chances, one to eight high danger chances. So again, this line like you know the the Smith celebrating to Foley line especially in the first two periods struggled you know and and like they just didn’t look like they had the right energy and tonight which again this is part of that maturing uh you know for a team you know like with Smith and Celebrity right we’ve how you know the past week or so how great is this team now look out these young guns etc etc um and then uh you know We in the third period we saw Smith celebr so they played 304 uh three to five shot attempts one to two actual shots uh point4 to point2 unexpect goals for one to2 scoring chances 0 to1 high danger chances so um and then of course graph gets gets the game winner there I think with Tofoy who you know wasn’t at morning I think or practice yesterday wasn’t at practice you wonder if he he’s just not 100% right now and maybe they’re just trying to kind of mix things up here a little bit. So, I would assume going against Calgary, Tapley’s probably back up there. Like again, with how well the Lions have been working right now, I wouldn’t tinker with them too much and just kind of say this was more likely uh just trying to get some find some energy for a team that was extremely lacking energy early uh in this game. And Jafo is too much of a vet. Like, he’s not going to take, you know, getting sent down to the third line personal and stuff like that. like he knows I’m sure he knows that like yeah we weren’t playing well etc etc so not worried about that. Um, goodro Goddet Reeves played 646, two to nine shot attempts, 0 to3 actual shots. Uh, 0 to.32 expected goals, four one to four scoring chances, zero to zero high danger chances. Um, this line especially in the first period was struggling against the Wild’s fourth line. Uh I think I it was like one to seven shot attempts after the the first period and then they really cut their ice time as the Sharks were trying to kind of uh get back into this game. uh you know it is what it is with this line and you know like unfortunately the Sharks are at 12 they have 12 and 12 forwards right now so they don’t really have much of an option elsewhere but yeah um Skinner Dandria Graph they played 540 uh four to five shot attempts one to two extra shots uh 0.12 to 09 expected goals for uh for this line and two to one scoring chances two to nothing high danger chances um this line like I I think they continue like to be quietly effective and I kind of think this line might be due for a couple goals here as well. So, um, defensively, we we got to the young players tonight. Like, it was all it was pretty young lineup defensively for the the Sharks here. Um, as both Muk Madan and Dickinson were in the lineup and then um, uh, Lil Digrin and Lety both sat. Uh, you know, I I would assume Lilren probably comes back in for the next game. Uh, because, uh, you know, he just didn’t look right the last couple games. They probably just want to give him a little bit of a rest here, but I assume he probably comes back in. But, uh, Dickinson, Darren, uh, they combined for 61.11%. Cory4 11 to7. Uh, Dones continues to just be solid. Dickinson, uh, you know, it’s a little bit of adventure sometimes, but he got his first assist tonight on the gamewinner. uh got some overtime play as well and continues to just you know kind of make some strong plays here and there. So uh Orlav Muka Madullan a little bit of a a mess tonight but 42.86% Cory4. Uh then we also had Orlav Cllingberg as well playing about 37% and then Ferraro was in there. That’s where they don’t have like the Ferraro combo in there as well. But um Clingberg I thought was was struggle tonight especially early on um took a really like both his so the first penalty he took was 100% like just a lazy like let me just get my stick in there and kind of jam it around and call for hooking. Second one he fumbles a pass at the point and then like he has to trip a guy to keep them from uh going on a breakaway. though. Uh not the best game from Clingberg, but uh you know, again, Sharks won. They’ve gotten points in seven straight games. Won four in a row here. Uh it’s it’s been a long time since we can say things like that. Uh a long time since we can say things like that about your San Jose Sharks. So, um yeah, we’ll take it. And now the Sharks uh play the worst team in the NHL coming up on Thursday. And it’s not themselves. It’s not a scrimmage. Uh what a world we live in. Uh so we’re going to Yeah, we’ll be back uh tomorrow. Like I said, we have an interview for Thursday’s episode. Uh we’ll of course get you guys ready for the flames on Thursday as well. So make sure you guys are following along with you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and on Tik Tok at lockdown sharks. I love this team. Go Sharks!
I feel like everyone under 24 in the NHL is secretly wishing for a trade to San Jose or Montreal
Finding ways to win despite having an off night is a great sign. Did not expect games like this to happen this year. I’ll take it though!
Go Sharkies. Ok job jd young. Decent job repping the SJS.
Weird spot right now playing the top teams. They're getting whooped but still winning due to a few elite performers. The scheduling has been tough as well.
The Sharks are playing as a team. They can get out of their zone, make passes, enter the offensive zone and score. They are improving 1% every day.
I been loving this getting wins I feel like rebuild is over and turning a page that we could be in playoffs 🦈
All game long, I was thinking, the "Sharks are going to shock and upset those announcers".
Reminds me of 2012 LA kings
Was at this game! What a rush! Go sharks!
Just give celibrini the C already. He's carrying this team on his back he's leading by example.
They did deserve to win, they scored more goals then the other team what a stupid thing to say
I love it. Sharks winning gritty games.
I think it’s about time to resign wennberg for another couple years if he’s interested
JD- How does that Wild goal get categorized as a "low danger" shot?….. It was a beautiful play and had Asky knocked it down it might have made the highlight reels…..
We have entered he Twilight Zone! Nice podcast. Excellent win! Woot woot!
I see massive improvement from last season. Yeah, maybe some games we didn't deserve to win, but there were games where we should've won
