Sources: The NBA asked multiple teams, including Lakers, to hand over documents and property as part of its investigation into illegal sports gambling. Two LeBron associates are among those cooperating

As a result of the charges filed against Damon Jones, a former NBA player and LeBron James’ former shooting coach who had special access to the Lakers, Wachtell investigators are expected to seek documents, including cell phones and phone records, from at least 10 Lakers employees. Per league sources, Lakers assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims are among the employees who are already cooperating and who voluntarily handed their cell phones over to investigators.

Both Mancias and Mims are employed by the Lakers because of their ties to James. The fresh scrutiny is expected to examine their relationship with Jones.

“The NBA engaged an independent law firm to investigate the allegations in the indictment once it was made public,” an NBA spokesman told The Athletic in a statement. “As is standard in these kinds of investigations, a number of different individuals and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records. Everyone has been fully cooperative.”

Prosecutors say that Jones used information disclosed to him by a team trainer on one occasion.

  1. Absolute nightmare scenario for the NBA holy shit

Edit for those wondering: this is the NBA trying to get in front of potential federal investigations

  2. Only a matter of time before some big name ends up being incriminated in one of the major sports. You have to think there’s a lot more shady shit going on that we just don’t know about, and we probably never will know about all or even most of it.

  3. Maybe this whole “gambling anywhere anytime on anything, on a casino you can fit in your pocket” thing wasn’t such a good idea, huh?

  4. Motherfuckers complain about the media covering Lebron so much, but when they use his name for clickbait, this sub eats it up like Zion eating crawfish boil

  5. As much as I dont like LeBron I find it hard that he would get involved in something like this. Dude has the entire world as his oyster

  6. LeBron is gonna have Bronny take the fall. That’s why he’s on the same team. They can’t arrest a father/son duo for the same crime. At least that’s what something similar in Arrested Development tried to teach me.

  7. This, in and of itself, is nothing. It would be crazy of them not to do this after the Damon Jones arrest.

  8. I’m a little confused. Why are they only requesting 10 employees to hand over their records? I would assume all trainers and staff could get inside information on the Lakers, right?

  9. The NBA must just be targeting the Lakers specifically. Oh wait multiple teams were asked, guess it’s just a big coincidence.

  10. Makes sense, Damon Jones was around the Lakers, so they’re looking to snip any loose ends..

  11. “I’m sick of seeing LeBron James name everyday and everywhere, NBA media needs to knock it of… Let’s post about use LeBron’s name in how the team’s assistant trainer and administrator are involved in gambling investigations!”

  12. How dare you guys impugn the integrity of a player who, just one month ago, tricked everyone into thinking he was retiring, when all he was doing was selling liquor!!!

  13. Kinda funny how LeBron and the Lakers get more attention than the team with their head coach fixing games.
