Changes are coming for the Chiefs and you may not like them…

Let’s talk about the Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnolo leaving the Chiefs for a reunion with the New York Giants. Brian Dayall is out. The Giants are reeling. Is bringing back the architect of their Super Bowl 42 upset versus the Tom Brady le Patriots a genius move to resurrect this dumpster fire of a franchise or is it just blowing smoke? Guys, it’s been on record several times that Steve Spagnolo said he would like to become a head coach in the NFL once again. Most recently, before week 18 of 2024, Jordan Foot reported on Sports Illustrated that Steve Spagnolo had a lot of interest in being a head coach in 2025. So, Spags hasn’t had the most success as a head coach in the NFL, an overall head coaching record of 11 and 41. That was 10 and 38 with the St. Louis Rams. and he was one and three as an interim head coach for the New York Giants back in 2017. Specs is however kind of a legend with the New York Giants organization much like he is with the Chiefs organization as he was a very successful defensive coordinator. He had two small stints as defensive coordinator in New York in 2007 and 2008 and also in 2015 through 2017 as a defensive coordinator with the Giants. He had a record of 41-35 overall. And of course, he shut down one of the best offenses of all time in the NFL, winning Super Bowl 42 and bringing that Lombardi to New York. So, one thing that Spags is always hammered home every time he’s talking about one of these head coaching opportunities is that he’s highly focused on his job with the Chiefs at the moment as defensive coordinator. The Giants right now have Mike Kfka in as interim head coach. And I think that’s probably how it’s going to be for the foreseeable future. Maybe next season they might look at Spags as head coach, but I have no immediate worries that he’s going to leave Kansas City and go to New York. I think Spags is in for the long haul here this season. Hopefully he can get this defense going and the Chiefs can have a good back half of the season, get to the playoffs, make a run for that Lombardi. Yeah, I find it weird that every single time we play the Broncos here lately, Spag starts getting brought up in coaching rumors. I’m tired of it. This happened last year before week 18 where we did set all of our starters. We did go on to lose that game. They put up a lot of points on the defense and then here we are again in a pivotal must-win game and here comes the coaching carousel and Spags is leading the way. I don’t want to really hear about this right now. I don’t want Spags to go anywhere. But I also think Spags is a little bit old to be a head coach going into a rebuild such as the New York Giants. So, this may just be a lot of smoke and no fire here. I’m right there with you, Mike. Although it seems like a good fit, I just don’t think that’s going to happen. Now, let’s talk about Andy Reid and the Chiefs impeccable record up after a by-week. It’s the best in NFL history. 22 wins and only four losses. Andy Reid always takes a week off and turns it into a superpower, correcting mistakes and drawing up genius plays. But the Chiefs are somewhat struggling at five and four. And this is a must-win divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos, who are red-hot right now. So, do we think this trend of being badass after the by-week holds up in week 11? Yeah. So, it’s pretty well known that Andy Reid is pretty successful after a by-week, but I was also reading something the other day and I want to say it was by PFT. They said that once the other team also has a byee, Andy Reid’s records not so impeccable after that. Now, the Broncos didn’t really get a byee. They played on Thursday, but they got a semi by week, right? They got a few extra days off. So, they’re also getting some extra time to prepare for Andy Reid, this Chief’s offense, this Chief’s defense, and Andy Reid off of a by-week. So, I wouldn’t say this is a huge advantage for the Chiefs. I know this is a talking point everybody likes to get after. I totally understand it. But look, we seen Andy Reid off a byee. He had two weeks off before the Super Bowl. We see what happened there. We got completely trounced. So, it doesn’t always mean Andy Reid’s going to come out with a genius plan. He’s going to have to come out with a good plan, but he’s got to stick to it. I personally don’t feel like it’s much about getting a genius playing together for the Denver Broncos game and just having that extra time, but it’s more about the time getting the guys some rest and also correcting some of the mistakes that you’ve been making all season long. I think this team’s very capable of just reeling off eight wins in a row right here at the end of the season. It’s just getting their heads on straight, executing, and then the coaches just need smarter game plans. Like Mike said, Andy Reid’s going to have to run the football whether he likes it or not. We have to have a balanced offense because I think this passing attack could be special, but it has to have the run game carrying its weight as well. And then we just talked a lot about Spags. He’s got to get this defense in order. I know it’s a lot of young guys and there are some missing pieces on the defensive line, especially after the injury to our rookie Omar Norman Lot. We also weren’t able to acquire anybody before the trade deadline. So, we have what we have unless they were to sign some kind of a free agent. So, hopefully this defense will gel together and get better as this year goes on. Usually Spags defenses are better on the back half of the season. I think more telling than Andy Reid coming off a by-week is probably Patrick Mahomes coming off a by-week. Our boy Price Carter put this together and I thought it was really good. I’ll read it to you. He said Patrick Mahomes coming off a regular season by week. He has 1,779 yards, which is about 254 yards per game, 11 touchdowns to six picks, a 60% completion percentage, 79.8 8 QBR and a 6 in1 record. If you add in the playoff buys, he goes over 3,000 yards, 20 touchdowns to six picks, 63% completion percentage, and a 93.6 QB rating with an 11-1 record. So, Patrick Mahomes is the key here. It doesn’t matter what Andy Reid does and what his game plan is. It’s if it’s a good game plan for Patrick Mahomes in this offense and if they can get Patrick Mahomes going early and often and have him sitting in a zone so he can absolutely destroy Denver when they go to their zone. The crowd is yours. So, let’s talk about the trade that could have been. That’s Jaylen Phillips to the Chiefs and instead it was Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles sent the 2026 third round pick to Miami for the star pass rusher and the return on investment was immediate. In his debut, Phillips was a defensive monster. Eight pressures, five defensive stops, a 19.4% pressure rate, and a clutch fubble recovery. He just single-handedly fixed the Eagle’s biggest problem. And the Chiefs still need a pass rusher. Did VH just let a Super Bowl ring fall off his finger, missing out on a move like this? Not so fast, baby. Brett V has fat fingers, and that ring doesn’t want to come off. Put your fat finger down. And let me tell you why. The Eagles always go out and pad up their roster every year, year in and year out under Howie Roseman, they have Pro Bowl teams. It managed to get them a total of two rings. If you go all the way back to Nick Fos beating Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, and Brett V’s GM stint has been kind of polarizing. Half the people think he’s bad. Half the people think he’s the best GM in the league. But the proof is in the pudding, man. We’re in the middle of a dynasty run. three Super Bowl rings, AFC Championship games every freaking year with Patrick Mahomes as a quarterback. I think Brett Vch has a formula. He’s sticking to it and we’ll see if it continues to work. Yeah, I’m not sure Jaylen Phillips would have 100% been the one that threw us over the top and got us to the Super Bowl. But you have to think the pass rush is the major concern here disregarding the running back position. Brent Mech tried to go get somebody at the deadline. He tried to go get Bree Hall. We we We’ve heard it’s been rumored he was trying to get Boy Mafia as well. You had to think that what the Eagles gave up to get Jaylen Phillips, it just made too much sense. Me and Steve have been saying Jaylen Phillips was a guy they should have went out and kicked the tires on over and over again. And this was weeks before the trade deadline. This kid in a good defense could be a dominant player. And it feels like Brent V may have just accidentally let something special fall through the cracks. Now look, Brent V very well could get the Chiefs to the Super Bowl this year. We could continue to win. We could continue this dominance, but if something were to happen, we were to drop this game or we drop another game down the road and we missed the playoffs, a lot of it’s going to come back on Vch and his inability to get something done at the trade deadline.
