1951 was also regarded as one of the most exciting seasons in baseball history, this game in special was broadcasted on the radio around all of the country, also had a great national TV coverage for the time which was unprecedented

The Giants and the Dodgers 3 game playoff was the talk of the nation, and Thomson was the most recognizable american alive that week

The greatest moment in Giants history? The shot heard round the world, in 1951 there was a 3 game playoff between the NY Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, game 3 at the Polo Grounds, bottom of the 9th, Dodgers up 4-2, then Bobby Thomson hits a 3 run Homer to send the Giants to the World series

  1. Maybe just me, but I can’t give a non-WS moment the top spot for the Giants. Mad Bum’s Game 7 performance for me

  2. The Giants were stealing signs at the Polo Grounds that year, using a telescope and an electric buzzer to relay signs to the bullpen bench from where players could relay signs to batters using body language. At the time there was no rule against that, but the National League did put a rule in place some years later. Ironically the Giants hit better on the road that year despite not being able to steal signs at other ballparks.

Thompson and Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca would eventually become close friends and toured the autograph circuit together. Joshua Prager wrote a stunningly detailed book about this incident, *The Echoing Green: The Untold Story of Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and the Shot Heard Round the World.*

  3. If we’re talking greatest individual moment, this isn’t it. IMO it’s Kuip screaming “SEVEN FIFTY SIX!!!! BONDS STANDS ALONE!!!”

  4. Renteria’s home run in 2010. I hated him till he hit that home run after he hit that Texas Leager to beat Cleveland. Dave Flemming‘s voice got really high when he called it. That was kind of funny, but it was the game winner for the Giants and the series against Texas.

  5. Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Since we’re talking about greatest moments…Matt Cain’s Perfect Game!

To me it was transcendent. There was a buzz in the air like negative ions were in play, like lightning. It WAS perfect. Not many things get that designation

I was blessed enough to spend several minutes in an elevator with #18 one time. He was a newlywed and was shopping with the wife, at Target Tanforan. He was on minimum wage, after all. I’ve never said this before nor after, out of my mouth is Jed Clampett’s “Well doggies” look who we have here”. I threw out my hand, I’m not a gentle handshaker and I got the “aw shucks ma’am” shy smile too. His hands were really soft, and his wife was pulling on his arm.

Maybe that’s why my heart was so connected to that moment: The Perfect
