So, went to opening night for SJ before I left town. Got hooked. Anybody got good places I can go to so I can learn more about the league? Ive been watching every sharks game this season. Thanks in advance

  1. Most NHL fans can help out with some simple things and die hard sharks fans can probably help with some deep lore

  2. The NHL.com website has a lot of great info on rules of the game. They make it very easy to understand, not a super technical deep dive but lots of really good basic info. Enjoy!

  3. Watching the games themselves will also help you pick up on much of the game some of the unwritten rules

  4. Sportsnet, or whatever sports network you got available and just watch everything hockey. Analysis, highlights, games, all they have.

I have Sporsnet+ in Canada, and I can watch any game, every night. it’s not cheap though

  5. Playing fantasy hockey is a fun way to keep up with the league and who is doing well outside your home team. I prefer Sirius XM NHL Radio, but there are some good pods out there as well.

Your team has a good one in Celebrini! Great time to get into that team.

  6. The Sharks broadcast crew (Randy and usually Drew) are really great for learning too — I only started following hockey two years ago and have found them to be really helpful. They’re also pretty fair about ref calls and how the other team is playing; when I watch other broadcasts (of games that don’t even involve the Sharks) I’m sometimes surprised that their commentators are so biased.

  7. Welcome to the NHL and keep an eye on videos by Brodie Brazil on the Brodie’s Breakdown of the San Jose Sharks.

  8. I would join the Sharks subreddit so you can follow that team more in depth(I’m also there).

  9. That’s the San Jose Sharks. They enter the rink through an inflatable Shark head. They have Sharks on the front of their jerseys. And a Shark fin on their shoulder. San Joses last Shark attack was on July 10th, 2023

  10. I started listening to hockey podcasts when I was getting into the sport. Back then Marek vs Wyshynski was the best. Marek has a new podcast called “the sheet” that’s very informative. Great interviews. I also love Puck Soup. Check out the Steve Dangle podcast too.

Greg Wyshynski has a book called “take your eye off the puck” which is a great read, highly recommend. Your sharks are really exciting this year and I think you picked a great time to get into the sport. Cheers from a Kings fan.

P.S. that stupid sharks head and the chomping. Yikes. Still makes me cringe.

  11. I hope SJ keeps this (unexpected?) jump in quality. I thought the rebuild would be taking longer.

  12. Past episodes of Steve’s Dangits and Weird NHL to see the more amusing and funny side of hockey.

  13. Jealous that the sharks still use their shark arch to skate through. Was one of my favorite parts of panthers games as a kid.

  14. I learned more about hockey from playing the video games than anything, aside from actually playing hockey. I see a lot of people recommending great videos and channels etc, but just wanted to throw in the NHL series of games to the convo as an additional option to those.

You can probably find some older games for pretty cheap and the Sharks were always my #2 team after the Lightning. Pavelski, Thornton, Marleau, Boyle, Blake, Nabokov were always top targets for me in fantasy draft leagues. Always had a soft spot for them lol.

Another great person to learn hockey from would be your Grandpa. Just watch games with him and let him teach you. Even if you don’t learn what you’re looking for he’ll love it.

  15. Sports video games are a great place to learn information about them, from stats to rules.

  16. 32 thoughts podcast is a great podcast that sometimes covers very technical information. I enjoy listening to it.

  17. Took my daughter to her first NHL game when we stopped in Vegas, she loved it! I go to the Shark Tank whenever Vegas comes as they’re closer to me, so it was my first VGK home game! It was awesome!! And a total vibe!
Thinking of booking a few flights so I can fly back to Vegas to watch some more this season!

  18. The Hockey Guy is probably my favorite YouTuber for hockey because he covers the entire league. His Daily News and power rankings are great for following what’s going on in the league without information overload.

Another great option is finding a good local sports bar that shows the games. Go and just sit at the bar wearing a jersey and plenty of fans will engage in discussion. For me here in Denver we have the DNVR Bar that is a hotspot for all things Avalanche. I’ve made several great friends there! Plus you can talk hockey at whatever depth you feel comfortable with.

  19. Welcome to the fan base! The vibes are great here. The future is teal. We don’t like the Ducks or Kings but we hate Vegas. Join our subreddit and participate in the Game Day Threads while watching the games. Cheers!

  20. I think watching Stanley Cup Finals highlights (on YouTube) for the last 10-20 years is a good place to start if you’ve got the time for it. And look up the team rosters to go along with it so you can learn about some of the players.

The Sharks had a pretty great run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 and although they didnt win the Cup its definitely worth watching the full run to enjoy the good moments from it and also to know your team’s history.

Probably my favorite Shark game of all time would be the 2019 playoff game 7 comeback against the Vegas Golden Knights so make sure you watch that game if you haven’t already.
