ESPN’s Brian Windhorst: Why Ja Morant’s Trade Value Is Rapidly Shrinking | The Rich Eisen Show

Is John Morant available? What’s going on with him? Who’s trying to get him? Could it be done fast soon? What do you think, Brian? I have not heard that John Morant is available. It doesn’t I don’t know everything. I wouldn’t say I know everything’s going on. I have not heard he’s available. Have there been discussions that I have all day every day about transactions that you know is it something people are thinking about could happen and what would the market look like? I have heard that. Um uh I will just tell you that Jaw is having a terrible season and his his um his shooting numbers and his production have fallen off a cliff. Now that seems to be because he’s not happy with his situation, but um he’s already coming off um several years in a row where he’s had either major offc court problems or injuries and his numbers his and not just I’m not just talking about the raw scoring. I’m talking about the thing that worries executives about him is that his interior scoring is going down. This is a guy who is one of the most explosive athletes I’ve ever seen who became a superstar for his ability to explode to the basket. And there’s all these indicators that are showing he’s not doing that as much anymore following a bunch of injuries. Now, maybe if he was on this call with us, he would say it’s because I don’t like this offense. I don’t know. But there’s there’s there’s yellow flags on his play. Meanwhile, his outside shooting has never been worse. Okay? So, what I’m telling you is his trade value is not good. And then I would challenge you to this. How many teams Let me just let me just put it to you how my conversations as executives have gone. We’ve got 29 other teams that don’t have John Morant. How many of those teams are unhappy with their point guard situation? Okay. Because there’s a lot of great point guards out there. For the sake of argument, this is ex this exact conversation I’ve had with league executives about 10 times over for the last two weeks. Okay? So, I’m going to roll through it. Let’s say there’s seven or eight. Let’s say there’s seven or eight teams. You could debate whether there’s six, whether there’s nine. Let’s just say there’s seven or eight teams that would, you know, consider upgrading their point guard position. How many of those teams want John Morant that like that in that like those indicators? It’s not seven or eight, Rich. We could spend another couple hours debating it, but you know, let’s say it’s a few. Okay, let’s let’s say it’s three or four. All right, I’ll give you five. I don’t think it’s five, but let’s just say it’s five. How many of those five teams have a trade package that’s available to that Memphis would like? And I want to remind you, there’s a whole bunch of teams out there that have restrictions on trades because of first or second apron stuff. So, all of a sudden, the the needle eye gets really narrow. And so, you have a conversation about whether John Mor can be traded. And you know, a lot of people would say, “Oh, yes, of course.” You know, and I say, “I don’t know about that. I’m not sure that there’s a massive market out there.” So, um, that’s why I think the Grizzlies intention is to try to make this work. And I think they suspended him not to announce the league. They want rid of him. They suspended him to try to get him to to cooperate with what the coach wants. And I’m going to tell you, the results are saying that it is not working. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

  1. He might be tanking his stat to get traded but not sure that’s a smart way to go since he doesn’t have much accolades to cover his poor performance this year. Jimmy couldn’t score 2ppg and still get you something because he is proven but not many GM are willing to give one of their max player nor giving multiple first rounds

  2. Its nothing wrong with Ja Morants game. This is a ploy by nba teams and media to lower his trade value. The guy is still the superstar who was going to knock off GS yrs ago before he got hurt in the playoffs. Steph curry couldn't do anything about it.

  3. The only teams that would be willing to trade Ja for a box of cookies are:
    * LA Clippers
    * Brooklyn Nets
    * Minnesota Timberwolves
    * Washington Wizards
    * Toronto Raptors
    * Beijing Tigers

  4. Some people are constitutionally incapable of making good decisions for themselves and are their own worst enemy. Ja is one of those people. I find it quite sad.

  5. I work at the arena in Denver & a few yrs ago Morrant came here,got off the bus acting like a gangsta,& trying to mad dog all us peon employees…I knew right then all I needed to know about Ja. That's never happened before or since in 3.5 yrs working there,& I see most the visitors get off their bus for both the NHL,& NBA. They rarely even notice we are there-rightfully so. But if they do-they don't waste energy or care about trying to intimidate random arena employees who have nothing to do with the game.

    Most of them are actually respectful & courteous or they just ignore us. They have much bigger fish to fry trying to deal with the Nuggets or Avalanche. But later that night after the Nuggets beat down the Griz,& Ja…he went to that strip club in Glendale,& had his infamous gun post moment & he's never been the same since. And I wasn't exactly shocked it happened though that it was the same night was crazy. I actually made a joke about Ja carrying a strap-turns out-MAYBE he was.

  6. Another Steve Francis/Russel Westbrook. The type of player you simply can't trust to lead a team, you don't win championships with guys like that.

  7. Basically off the court too many problems, problems with coaching, doesn't play his signature style anymore, efficiency all the way down, undersize guard, no defense etc. he's not even an all star.

  8. Ja is similar to Westbrook. They are both super athletic and fun to watch but they are inefficient, cannot be the best player in a championship team and will take a big dip when the athleticism is gone.
