Philadelphia Eagles defense makes statement in win over Lions | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

I hear all this chatter now about we don’t really know who the great teams are. I think we saw one of them last night. And even though the offense continues to be at times lacking in identity and the play calling, the product of a random play generator. Holy crap, that defense. Now that they have Jaylen Phillips, that has pushed them over the top. They’ve got the pass rush punch. They were slapping balls around last night. It was comical for the Eagles. It was sad for the Lions. I haven’t seen the Lions play like that offensively in a long time. And I don’t think we’ve ever seen Jared Goff struggle like that. 14 for 37 last night. And in the second half, it was very bad. And they failed five or more times on fourth down conversions since that’s the first time that’s happened since 2022. And that’s kind of when Dan Campbell first flexed his muscles with the willingness to go for it on fourth down all the time. Yeah. I mean, it it was the Eagles defense is special and it’s going to continue to go that way. You heard me gushing about them last week. I did it on my podcast, especially after the Monday night football game. I mean, the Eagles have the all look team. You’ve been hearing me say that for three years now. They’re incredible. The Lions, for the first time last night, found out what the Eagles are all about. They stepped on the football field. The Lions almost every game in the Dan Campbell era, they step on a football field, they go, “We’re the bigger, we’re the more physical football team.” When we were on pregame warm-ups, I sat there and looked at Devin McCordi and I went, “The Lions are big, but they still ain’t the Eagles.” And he looked at me and went, “Nope, you’re like, “Yeah, you’re right. The Eagles are an incredible football team, and the Lions are going to have to adjust the way they play the next time they play the Philadelphia Eagles.” The defense, like you just said, I mean, it’s the alllook team. When you talk about the two Georgia guys in the middle and then Nolan Smith and Jaylen Phillips on the edge and and Campbell and Nico Dean at linebacker and we’re watching Cooper Deene really become one of the best secondary players in football. We’ve talked about Quinn Yan Mitchell’s already one of the best corners in football. I mean, yeah, that was a special performance. That was dominant. That was an ass an ass whooping is what that really was there. I mean, they took away everything. You didn’t see here’s the tip passes that you talked about. That was obviously an emphasis for this Eagles defense throughout the night when they want to throw the ball over the middle. Big guys get your hands up. They dominated the Lions in pass pro. They dominated the Lions in the run game and really couldn’t find any holes throughout that the middle of the night. And then as you down the middle for the for the most of the night and then as you talked about, you know, the conversation of Jared Goff not looking good. Of course, the defense not good, but missing throws and out in the elements, windy cold night. all of that. Not a good light night for Detroit. And you’re right, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen him look like that where there was like no answers on the field for them as the night went on. Jared Goff was 7 for 25 passing in the second half. 28% completions, the lowest in the second half for a player with 20 or more attempts since Brian Hoyer was 6 for23 against the Dolphins in October of 2015. That’s from Josh Dubau of the AP and Pete Demolitis pointed out last night lowest second half completion percentage in the last four seasons with a minimum of 15 attempts. Jared Goff yesterday with 28% and Shadur Sanders yesterday who made his debut. We’ll talk about that later with 25%. You saw the second half of the game. I mean, you know, one they all they could do is complete a screen to uh a screen to to Jir Gibbs, right? That was really their their big play the second half. Certainly it was good defense. There was the batted balls like you talked about, but he missed throws too. There was probably at least five or six opportunities where you go, “Oh boy, this this guy’s open. You could fit that in there or you don’t have to fit that in there. You just got to make a throw and put it in the vicinity.” And he didn’t do that either. So, yes, it was an off night. They were flustered. All right. I Right. This is the first time I think they’ve been in a football game where they’re like, “Whoa, we’re definitely not the for sure alpha male team on the football field here.” And it showed. And I just think you’re seeing like you’re talking about this Eagles defense is feeling itself now. I think Jaylen Carter’s totally healthy. They’ve got a they’ve gone to the next level with the scheme of Vic Fangio. They’re doing more than what they even did last year. Not a whole lot more, but they don’t need to do a whole lot. And within that, when you have, like we always talk about, a front four that can go, uh, the four can get there in the pass rush. Oh, the four can stop the run. We don’t need to load the box and worry about that all the time. It’s just such a great advantage and they got four freaks of nature up there. Really, they got more of that because you get into the depth chart of the Eagles, too. And what’s scary is that you got like right the Mororrow Aomo guy. He’d be like a guy that you know, what’s his name that went up to New England last year and got the big deal in and free agency, right? Milton. That he’s this year’s Milton. He’s a backup for the Eagles that will start on every team in football. And I don’t know his contract details, but he’d be a free if he was a free agent, he’d get big money. But that’s that’s how good they are. And we’re seeing the Eagles, yes, struggle on offense, but does it really matter? I mean, I’m at the point where it’s like, I don’t know if it really matters. As long as they don’t turn it over, I don’t think you can beat them. Even when they play average offense, that’s how damn good the Eagles are. And yeah, it’s uh it’s getting scary for the rest of the NFC. They like to have that rotation of multiple guys beyond four that can come in and provide pressure without help, without blitzing. And that’s the key. And look, we saw one of the limitations we’ve known about with Jared Goff. He can’t run away from trouble. He can’t do things off schedule. The play that’s called has to be there. 1. No Laporta was glaringly evident. He’s their #2 in catches, yards, and a great blocker. Having backups at guard against the Eagles is also not the team that you’re going to do great against.

  2. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have shut the Lions up. They finally learned the truth that the Eagles were the best team in the NFL last year, and they are the better team this year, too. They had the better offensive line last year, and Lane Johnson should have been the first team all pro player last year – NOT SEWELL. The Eagles are so good that their offense played like one of the worst offensives in the league, manufacturing by a terrible offensive coordinator, and yet they still dominated the Lions and showed them what championship mettle looks like. How the eagles win no matter what. That’s the difference.

  3. So many of these so called experts totally miss the point. The Eagles have beaten – Chiefs – Rams – Packers – Lions – Vikings and Bucs! Every team is gunning for them. You know how hard it is to be 8-2 against good comp? Most importantly, and what geniuses are missing – they are so physical. You can’t teach it and it’s an intangible that can’t be measured. Somebody will have to go into Lincoln financial and beat them. Who is going to do that in the winter!

  4. The dumbest of Philadelphia Eagles fans : Jalen Hurts is holding us back !

    The Eagles are currently 8 – 2 ( 1st in the NFC ) , with a 6 – 1 record against last year's playoff teams.

  5. Stopping the run on their way to the QB…and carrying the offense on their backs as well.🦅🦅 We broke KC last year letting them know there was a new sherriff in town and this will probably break the Lions and they lose the division and might even miss the playoffs knowing they can't play outside.

  6. That was a lion's loss due to terrible coaching on the offensive end. The eagles pretty much sucked to just not as bad. Lions are the more complete, talented team. But when you give your number one receiver two targets you are not going to win that game. I believe they are telling Goff to look at Williams before St Brown which is a terrible thing to do. Whatever they did they messed up Goff game. You don't change what has been working for 3-4 years. The problem on those years was the defense so when that's clicking just keep your offense rolling as should be doing the same exact thing it does to put 30+ points up every week. . Every game they've lost they have not followed their regular game plan. Their offense did not show up because of it. They have the most potent offense if they stick to what works. Feeding St Brown the ball most of the time and feeding Gibbs and Montgomery the ball a minimum number of times. They should have ran that ball in for a touchdown when I was 4th and goal. If Goff wouldn't have panicked and threw the ball 2 quick with nobody open, he would have seen the hole that was right in front of him to the end zone. He had more time when he threw the ball. That is just one of the chances they blew that they normally don't. This tells me they're trying to prep them for a game they're not used to playing. Do what works every time. St Brown and Gibbs as your money. I don't even have to bring up the refs complete terrible call I want to give them another chance to tie or win the game. I'm not bringing that up because they should have already had done that with the chances they had. Detroit is not a one touchdown team. There are three four or five touchdown team every game. If that is not happening then the coaching is changing stuff up that they should not be doing especially against the eagles. Miami would have beat the eagles this week. Guaranteed. They both sucked. I still have the Lions winning the whole thing because by time the playoffs hit they will have all these mistakes dealt with hopefully.

  7. I just want to say that Nakobe is a beast. This guy worked so hard to rehab and he is super good. They now have 3 quality linebackers. That play where he blew up the RB was awesome.
