2 BIG Coaching Changes the New York Jets MUST Make!
What is going on Jet fans? Matt Olri back with another video. Today I want to get into two changes I think the New York Jets are going to have to make to their coaching staff with the Jets playing on Thursday from this past week. A little bit more time to think about some things. It’s like a mini by week and you know eventually we’ll turn the page and start talking about this game coming up against the Ravens. Uh, but over the weekend I was thinking about the Jets coaching staff and after the performance against the New England Patriots, I was thinking more about it and could you blame me? At 2 and 8, naturally there’s going to be a lot of offseason talk. And look, we’ve talked a ton about the quarterback so far and we will continue to talk quarterbacks over the next few months. But today, I wanted to focus on two changes that I think the Jets should make to their coaching staff in 2026. Uh, Aaron Glenn is going to be back next year. Like it or not, Aaron Glenn is coming back in 2026. I think he should get a second year, but there are some that don’t. Uh, someone who I don’t think should get sec a second year on this staff, though, is Steve Wilks, the defensive coordinator right now. Here’s a look at their ranking. They are 19th in yards allowed, 23rd in rushing yards allowed, and 26th in points allowed. Uh, a very below average unit. And I get it, like there are some significant deficiencies on this defense, especially after trading away S Gardner and Quinnon Williams. All totally understandable, but you know, everyone keeps making the comparisons to the Dan Campbell Lions because that’s, you know, where Aaron Glenn came from and they were really bad his first year and then they turned it around a little bit in year two and they’ve been good ever since. Well, after year one, Dan Campbell fired veteran offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn. Lynn was the veteran on that staff. He was, you know, a longtime uh offensive coordinator in the league. He was even a head coach. And they decide to go a different direction. They end up hiring Ben Johnson. And the rest is history. Now, Ben Johnson’s a head coach. I think the Jets need to do something similar with their veteran defensive coordinator, Steve Wils. And I didn’t mind the veteran route the Jets went with someone who has head coaching experience and has done you know defensive uh been a defensive coordinator before. But to me clearly it’s just it’s not working. And specifically on third downs they seem like they’re okay in their first couple of down like on first and second down and then they get into third down situations and it’s just everything falls apart. And uh look he’s bounced around the league a lot. uh Steve Wilks, he’s not someone who usually uh lasts very long in these in these places. So, uh maybe there’s a reasoning behind that and it would not shock me if the Jets decide to move on from him at the end of the year. Now, some options for you if they do decide to move on, which I think they should. If Cleveland gets let go, like that staff just gets blown up. Jim Schwarz would be a name that would be high on my list as a great veteran defensive coordinator option. Uh had success, you know, even post Detroit as a head coach years and years ago. Uh he went to Buffalo and was good the one year he was there. Uh in Philadelphia, had a lot of success and then as as Cleveland’s defensive coordinator has had a lot of success. Um that is the much more veteran approach. Um I think he’s one of the better defensive coordinators in football. I know, you know, Cleveland is not a very good football team right now. Uh, but that defense is still good year year in and year out. He always has his units ready to go. The other name that brings or makes a lot of sense that I it gets brought up a decent amount that I’d be a big fan of is Jim Leonard, who is the defensive pass game coordinator in Denver and the assistant head coach. Former Jet fan favorite. We know that 2009 through 2011 was a really good Jet. uh he was a defensive coordinator before at Wisconsin in the collegiate game from 2017 to 2022. We know how much Sean uh how much Aaron Glenn rather respects Shawn Payeyton. Uh so you have that connection, Darren Muji connection from Denver. Uh like trying to connect the dots. I think eventually you’re going to have to see Jim Letter take that next step at the NFL level. And if it’s not going to happen in Denver, then Pton’s going to have to let him go. and with the mutual respect that he has for Aaron Glenn would not shock me at all if that’s the route that he ends up going. And for Jet fans, look, you know, they went the Aaron Glenn route, former player. Why not continue the former player route and bring in a beloved defensive player from the last time the Jets were good in 2009 and 2010. Guys, think you know football? Uh Charles London is the New York Jets quarterback coach. And uh well, we’ll go through some of his other stops. In 21 and 22, he was Atlanta’s quarterback coach. Uh then he went to the Titans in 2023 and then Seattle in 2024. And you know, it’s not like he was able to develop Desmond Ritter. Matt Ryan didn’t had one of his worst years of his career. Uh Will Levvice as a rookie and we’re talking like the year that Seattle decided to move on from Gino Smith after the one year that he had together uh with Charles London. And I don’t know how many people realize this, right? Like I don’t know how many casual fans know the history of their quarterback coach. I wouldn’t really expect you to know this, but uh Charles London’s a former running back. like and his most successful stint as a coach in the NFL was as a running back coach with Houston from 2014 to 2017. Uh then he goes to Chicago even after that. And then Arthur Smith decides, hey, you know what? You know, we’re going to end up hiring you to be the quarterback coach for Matt Ryan and then Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ritter. And he kept getting one-year jobs on and on down the line. one year uh one year in Tennessee, one year in Seattle, then to the Jets. And I just don’t quite understand why. And with the Jets, you know, likely to be looking for a young quarterback either this year or next year, I think you have to do everything you can to make sure that this kid is successful. And I’m a Tener Angstrand believer, but I think the Jets can do better than a former running back as the quarterback coach who’ll be tasked with developing that next quarterback. And you know, there’s going to be a lot of names that get brought up like Brian Dable is going to be a popular one. Former Giants head coach, you know, worked with Jackson Dard and Josh Allen. Frank Reich maybe, right? Didn’t work out with Bryce Young, but did wonders with Carson Wentz back in the day, 2016 and 17 had Carson Wentz humming. Uh, could they dip into the Broncos again and pry Pete Carmichael away from Shawn Payeyton to help out help out old buddy Aaron Glenn? I don’t know if Carmichael is gonna end up separating from Shawn Payeyton. That’d be pretty surprising considering they spent the entirety of their New Orleans tenure together. U, but you never know, right? Hey Pete, you want to come over here and be the quarterback coach and, you know, help help us out, please? He’s currently just like a senior offensive assistant there. But point being, I think the the person that I’d be looking at for offensive or quarterback coach is a uh more seasoned proven veteran offensive coach than Charles London, who unfortunately like he could be a great guy. He doesn’t have that cache for, oh, I worked with this quarterback and it worked out great. There’s been a lot of misses. Again, you can go back to him, his work as a running back coach. He worked well with Aryan Foster and you have that to your name. Absolutely. And then he went to Chicago after that for a couple years and they had success in 2018. Like totally fair, but as a quarterback coach does not have that same cache to his name. So, uh that’s a direction that I would also like to change. But I want to know what you guys think. Do you agree that the Jets should move on from their defensive coordinator and their quarterback coach going into the 2026 season? Let me know. I’m Matt Ori. Should the Jets bring in a new defensive coordinator and QB coach in 2026?
shit, I'd be okay bringing Rex Ryan back for a DC/assistant HC slot to help glen
Give Wilks at least another year.
Yeah both should go. Hiring a RB and primarily RB coach and journeyman QB coach to develop young qbs makes 0 sense.
We definitely need a top notch QB coach. We need to finally get the QB position right.
I think he should come back for your team, you can see that they are starting to believe in his message but still needs to be full in.
Let's start with Glenn change now. He is just a cheerleader… Jets fan since 73 and has seen it all
Lets not be one sided here Engstrand play calling is horrible we have talent on the offensive side and even thou Fields is incompetent QB a great coordinator will use their team’s strengths to compensate we are running the ball 95% Breece is great RB in catching the ball in the open field pathetic coaching 🔥 him too!!!!
What do we think about pulling McCown from the Vikings for qb coach??
If Jeff Ulbrich got a second year I have no idea why Steve Wills shouldn't get a second year. Even the players say it more about them communicating on the field then the coach.
I disagree, these two never have a chance to actually establish anything with the teams they get hired on unlike most of the guys mentioned that are lucky enough to be attached to well established teams.
Just like Rex that fans like to bring up, he went from an established Ravens team to a Jets team that was already setup for him and he didn’t even have to look for his OC or ST coordinators.
Both Steve Wilks and Charles London keep getting shafted teams get rid of them when they finally add the talent around the team but when they are there the team expects them to make chicken salad out of chicken shit.
Charles London had Geno Smith, Malik Willis and old ass Matt Ryan. I already knew he was a RB as a player and he was a RB coach but besides a QB coach he was an offensive assistant, a passing game coordinator and an assistant WR coach. We have to give him a real QB to work with the best he had was Geno.
Most of these guys get pushed because who they are currently playing under heck Jim Leonhard is under the best defense in the league. I bet no one would look his way coaching Clemons
😂 You can change the coaches the team still ain’t going nowhere!
I think Tyrod would be a great QB coach. He's been call an unofficial QB coach for years now. Baker Mayfield and Daniel Jones both say that Tyrod was a great mentor and played a big role in their development.
fir starters for the love of god can we get two functional safeties!!one playmaker and one hard hitting safety!!!it's criminal what this team had put out there at safety the past six years
Im kicking them in the head on the way out the door u can add the ol coach the dl coach the lb coach the cb coach they all need a smack in the face and a new job bagging fuckin groceries
Mike McDaniel for Qb coach once he gets let go and Jim Leonard or Anthony Weaver who use to be Ny. Jets linemen coach back in the day for defensive coordinator.
Yes the team lacks players on defense but even with sauce and williams this defense was straight trash cant stop the run alot of mistakes in the secondary this DC doesn't adjust and it's always the same defensive schemes wilks needs to go just look at there defensive stats bad
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Many years of happiness and plenty of children. That's what life is all about. Good luck.
A running back coach masked as a Qb coach for a running back masked as a Qb, makes sense to me 🤦🏽♂️
Was not a fan of the Wilkes signing when it happened, even less of one now. Not sure who the right guy to bring in on defense is, I do like the Cleveland option though. Leonard, yes, is a former Jet, but it appears he’s only been an NFL coach for a year or two? Obviously to be named assistant HC in that time span, and to have Sean Payton be the guy to give you that title, is huge, but still seems a tad green for a DC role, no? Idk, sometimes I think a fresh corpse could be a better DC alternative than Wilkes so most any option is worth considering.
As for QB coach, boy, that is a position we absolutely have to get right. If we’re all-in on former Jets, then I’m all for bringing in Chad Pennington in some capacity, if he’s down. I’ve seen some Jets fans compare Mendoza to him; regardless of our choice though, Pennington was a cerebral QB who knew the position in and out and knew how to process and read a defense at a high-level, so if he could teach all those qualities to whatever poor young soul we entrust with the hardest job in sports next year, I only think that poor soul will be the better for it. I see McCown as another popular name, but unless the Vikes fire him or you offer him a better job (OC) then I don’t see how he shakes free, and I kinda don’t see why you’d want him to either; dude’s only two QBs under his resume thus far are Young and McCarthy, neither of which have exactly proven they’re franchise guys under his tutelage. Daboll is without a doubt the best guy for the job, but I SERIOUSLY don’t see him getting anything less than an OC job, and I think he’ll most likely land back in Buffalo and give us another supercharged Josh Allen, SMH.
New qb coach can't have a rb coach developing a rookie qb
Go jets
Jets owner Woody hired 1st year hc
He's been doing that last 20 years
This is the result…jets fans should be used to it
Alex Smith for QB coach 🙏
I’m sorry but if you’re gonna bring back the HC as the HC then you should not be changing coordinators after season one especially since the HC & GM have given the coordinators trash to work with.
Agree
Tool late. Whats the point. Tyrod is a backup QB. Look to the future. Give Brady Cook the opportunity as the giants did with Dart. it payed off. they didnt go to a QB that has been bounced around the league. They went with fresh. Jets hgave nothing to loose and the fans deserve it.
MATT, I SAY THIS RESPECTFULLY… sometimes you need o really think before you speak
!
I find it ridiculous that you could even start saying that we need to replace the defensive coordinator when the defense has been keeping this team in games over the last six games or so, and they've done that without their best players. You said you get it, but then you turn around. And obliterate the very statement that came out your mouth by saying the extra dumb shit that we are deficient in talented players.
We all know that this defense lacks a run stopping DT, CB#1, CB#2, SS, FS, LB, and another Edge. The things that come out of some of you podcasters' mouths is just ridiculous.
If you have to give the head coach another year.Because we know he doesn't have a quarterback, and they don't have any wide receivers. Then, you have to give the DC the same grace, because he is lacking even more players on the defensive side of the ball with those trades of QW and SG.
Now a QB coach, I can agree with you on because I haven't seen justin feels improve at all.

Matt you always do a great job explaining things i love you videos good luck with the marriage I hope uve found your unicorn 🦄 ❤️
Well when your offense is so bad it's hard to have a decent defense
DC definitely needs to go. Would not mind Glenn calling plays !
Huh?!🤔 Same old Jets. Until the NFL forces the sale of the team from the Nepo Grandbaby Johnsons it’s a rinse & repeat annually. Worst team in major professional sports.
I said when they hired Glenn what will he's coaching staff look like when he picked Steve Wilkes I said wtf this sucks he's a journey man not a good DC then the QB coach come on man forget about it.
No mention of Engstrand? The man doesn't even have a two minute drill. Rewriting it by passing and running up the middle screams he has to go
so wait you're telling me that our QB coach was a running back? so instead of getting a real QB coach we went to dollar tree? and we wonder why our QB is not progressing? lol what a messed up thing to do man we are a f'd up organization aren't we?
I can’t lie I honestly want Rex as Dc that way Glenn can honestly just focus more on offense with tanner and I think Rex will get those guy to buy in and play hard !!!
