Lucas Raymond’s 5-points leads Detroit to weekend split

Today on Lockdown Red Wings, Detroit takes three of four points on the weekend, blowing a game against Buffalo, but winning in Madison Square Garden. You’re Locked on Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome back to the Lockdown Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fischer and Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. You can listen to us wherever you get your podcasts. Scotty, thank god the Red Wings won Sunday night uh against the New York Rangers because I was not looking forward to coming on here and recapping two losses in which you blew a 4-1 lead in the first of those two. So that win in New York doesn’t completely erase the how terrible that blown lead was, but I think uh does make things feel a lot better when you can frame it as three or four points on a weekend. So we will Oh, no. I I agree. It was a uh the fact that they walked away with two points certainly softens the blow and they get the loser point. Like you really only dropped I I say you only dropped one point. It’s very easy to say that on November 16th, but you know, we’ll we’ll remember that in uh in April and see if that one point dropped ends up maybe stinging more uh later on. But yes, very nice rebound on Sunday. So, we don’t have to be as like, you know, pissy and in a bad mood because of the Buffalo game because of recency bias. So, uh yeah. Correct. We will unfortunately break down the Buffalo game first and foremost because chronologically that did happen first. But we will talk about the Rangers uh about halfway through. We’ll transition. But I got to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting FanDuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right, Scotty. Thankfully, memories are short here on this podcast. We had to take a couple minutes to regain our bearings on what happened in the Buffalo game after the win against the Rangers because we were recording right after. But we do got to talk about that blown 4 to1 lead first and foremost in that game. Scotty, what would you name as your difference maker? I mean, I I guess that that depends on if you want to go like glass half full or or glass half empty. I mean I I mean genuinely like the third period was just it was a train wreck from the wings perspective and obviously it’s very easy to say just looking at the goals given up and the blown lead I guess in general but it it’s it’s frustrating because it feels like there is I don’t know like always something. Maybe that’s what I’m trying to say. It just feels like there’s always there’s always something like it’s always you know there’s never just like a clean start to finish hockey game. It’s either they get off to a really slow start and they’re this terrible first period team and they have to come back or on the rare occasion they do get off to a hot start then stuff like this happens. It it just I I I guess the third period I mean overtime there was a few I don’t know man. Let’s just go with that. I’m going to go with OT just so I’m not taking just the third period and just like obviously the collapse that happened in the third. I’m going to go with the the se the literal game losing sequence which is probably as literal of a differencemaker as you can. That was a a a complete train wreck of a defensive set. De Brink flies into the boards. Tic-tac-toe. Doesn’t fly get flies into the boards. He gets thrown into the boards. Yes. Correct. Yeah. But that distinction is important because Tae Thompson was making big boy plays all game that all day that game. Yes. So, I I think it is a a situation where the I mean, we’ll break down the collapse a little bit more in depth. I know I’ve been super kind of vague with this. It’s just like obviously like what do you want? Obviously, the collapse the entire last, you know, 25 minutes of the game is the difference maker, but I think they still had a chance to redeem themselves in OT. They missed a couple of high danger opportunities and then whatever the heck that was on the last play of the game, I guess, is going to be my differencemaker. I’ll keep mine quick here because we got a we got a whole game to recap and we’re trying to squeeze it in 15 minutes before moving on to the Rangers. But my differencemaker is just game management. Something that Todd Mlen talks a lot about and overtime obviously is part of that too. If you look at the goals against, it’s just it’s just silliness, right? Just silliness by Detroit. Um the very first goal that the Red Wings uh give up is the the icing that doesn’t need to happen. I think Marco Casper iced it when he didn’t have to ice it. Caused a defensive zone faceoff. Actually cut to commercial and cut back really quick. They lose the offensive zone fa faceoff. Chaos ensues and it’s 1-1. And then you have the the goal that made it 4 to2 late in the third period. That was just a really nice deflection by Shone. Almost said Shane Don that Doan deflected. I’m sorry, other way around. Shot by Doan that Don deflected. Uh that one I I’m not too hard on. But the the third goal and the fourth goal especially kill me when we talk about game management because you have you have Alex Debrink covering for his defensive for Moritz Cider who pinched up and was up in the play. Alex to bring it given it all he can everything he can on that but that is such a size m mismatch what 67 57 something crazy like that it’s also something Mlen said immediately right and like there there’s no no blame to bring it here he’s doing what he can he the blame goes on Simon Edson who’s standing there and I understand in his head he’s probably looking at it and goes I’m trying to take away the pass there was no pass nobody was there and he waited too long to try and engage Thompson as he made the power move around to break it to tuck it by John Gibson. Then in the game tying goal was because all of the sudden Morit Cider has the yips on the power play along the blue line and Mor Cider had four points on the weekend. No, three points on the weekend, three assists, but he had just as many turnovers along the blue line at the power on the power play. He’s had he gave up three two breakaways. I think the other one Debrink came back on and broke up, but one of those was the game tying goal against the Buffalo Sabres. And those yips on the blue line come back a couple games prior to that. I can’t remember exactly which one, but I mentioned it on Friday’s episode where he gave the puck away twice along the blue line on the power play. One of which was resulted in a breakaway goal short-handed, you know. So, that’s game management. And then OT, like you said, Thompson just throwing Alex Debrink. The the game management was terrible in this game. And a lot of it comes down to just getting comfortable and casual when you have a big lead with a big lead which this team is not good enough to be able to afford to do. Well, it I I think it’s you’re right for starters, but it’s interesting because the way that they play at when it’s a close game, right? The the the new kind of five on five implementation that we have gotten used to this year has worked wonders in even strength close games or when they’re behind even, right? Because they’re consistently applying pressure and whatnot. And that has worked wonders. the one area which a we haven’t seen them have a lot of because they literally can’t score goals and b it just that system is not necessarily built for. It can still be successful in it but it’s obvious it you know no one’s drawing that up to be uh like the the go-to game plan if you will with a three-goal lead early is is that scenario. And so it it’ll be interesting to see if like is the plan to just keep your your foot on the the pedal all game and just be like, “Well, like this is how we’re good. This is how we win. I don’t care how much we’re up if we leave the back door open, whatever.” Because they they can’t do what they did. They can’t just get their teeth kicked in the last 20 minutes of the game and expect to hold on for dear life. like we it’s not playing it’s also because they’re not playing the way that Mlen wants them to which is go and you saw that in the the game they won on against the Rangers the next day where they’re not going to the net. So they had what 46 shots in this game against the Rangers and we’ll get I’m getting ahead of myself here but just to kind of hammer home the point those shots like all come from the perimeter or from the blue line but no one’s going to the net. Something we talked about prior to the Ducks game was that was contributing to their scoring chance. The despite the huge gap in shots, their expected goal share was almost dead even. Both just shy of two because when the Rangers were getting opportunities, it was established zone time, cycling the offensive zone, getting to the net, and getting to rebounds. When the Wings are doing it, it’s rushes, shots from the perimeter, and then no one’s getting in front of quick size. And you know, everyone’s talking about that. We’re we’re not breaking new ground here by bringing this up. You know, Mickey Redmond brings it up on the broadcast. Mlen brings it up. Everyone is talking about it, but this team is not skilled enough to play that way and expect to win a lot. They have got to go to the net. And when they beat Anaheim, it’s because they went to the freaking net, right? So, they we’ll we’ll we got to go to break. When we come back, we’ll talk about notable performers from that game. We got some uh good performers and some poor performers. Stay tuned to segment two of Lockdown Red Wings. Got to talk to you guys today about game time. Hockey season is officially here and nothing beats being in the arena for those opening games. But let’s be real, getting tickets can be a total headache. Scotty, I know we’ve kind of said it without saying it uh with a couple of players, but who do you have for notable performers? Yeah. Well, I mean, the weird part about big blown leads is that there are still like you still got a lead at one point. So, there’s still a lot of of good to talk about and there’s still a lot of point producers from not only this game, but from the weekend. I mean, you mentioned Cider. Cider had one of the worst giveaways you will see in this hockey game and a brutal turnover that immediately led to a goal. He also had, what’ you say, three points on the weekend as a whole. Um yeah, like he was so and uh we always talk about his defensive metrics and the deployments and everything. Um but then you know you get the cherry on top of just an awful turnover that immediately leads to a goal. You have um again I mean we’ve talked a lot about Debrink over the last week had what three goals this weekend on top of that as well. Three goals in two games. So, um, those two I I I mean I I think when you talk about a successful weekend where you win one game and score four goals and go into overtime in the other, it probably starts with them and then if you want to throw Raymond in there, too, but I I don’t want to just list the whole roster on the first question you asked me. So, well, Cider definitely had the definition of a giveth and taketh taketh away weekend for sure. Uh, with those three assists contributing on the score sheet in both positive and negative ways. Edmonson, his partner, he’s he’s taking so many penalties. He needs to clean up his game. And a lot of it comes because he’s being too casual with the puck. Uh against the Sabres, I remember specifically he turned the puck over because again, he was being too casual with the puck. No sense of urgency. And then he ended up hooking Tage Thompson, got a penalty. Luckily, the Earnings were able to kill that one off. He got another one for high sticking. It feels like he’s constantly in and out of the box. And I know there is more Cider got a couple penalties against the Rangers. We’ll talk about one of those penalties, I’m sure, at some point, but it wasn’t a great weekend from Cider and Ed. Uh, obviously the expectation for Mo was so much higher than many other players, but those turnovers, those brain farts that he had were certainly pretty egregious this weekend to uh to say the least. Uh, but you’re right, you look at the guys who produced this weekend, you know, this is kind of they come together here as a you could this is an open performer for both games, right? like Lucas Raymond, I think I mentioned it, five points this weekend. Should have had two goals and three assists, but the Brinka decided he was going to steal that one as it was crossing the uh goal line. So, he comes away with one goal and four assists on the weekend. The game-winning goal late against the New York Rangers. Lucas Raymond is just five goals on the season, but he’s kind of like last year just producing assists at a crazy clip, giving his goals to guys like Debrink, Finny, and you know, Lark and whomever’s on his line at the time. Yeah. And obviously you saw the emotion a little bit after he scored that big goal against the Rangers on Sunday. I I think he was I don’t want to say feeling it like I don’t think he was he was you know it wasn’t affecting his play again he’s been he leads the team in assists I’m pretty sure still like he’s been a point producer and you know despite find not finding the back of the net rather but I think that we all know that for him to reach his peak which I I mean we talked about at the end of the summer how you know when this dude is firing on all cylinders he could be a 90 plus point guy um for that to happen, he obviously needs to put the puck in the back of the net much more than he has so far this year. And I think that that play was just a beauty, too, man. Just the patience, patience, patience, patience, patience. And uh eventually it pays off against I mean, you know, one of the best goalenders of this generation for sure. So, um yeah, man. I I mean, he I it’s great to see that even when he is in a goal drought, he can still produce points. like that is obviously a massive plus and part of what makes him great, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want him scoring goals either. So, I think that that is hopefully the start of I mean, he should have had two in this game, right? On Sunday’s game, rather. So, um I I think that that is hopefully a little bit of tides turning in his favor in that regard. Well, he’s always been more of a playmaker, right? Like that’s always been the case. the 30 goal season was great to see see out of him, but he’ll always get way more assists than he does goals. Say that about, you know, Larkin, too. Like, that doesn’t mean that you we’re not going to lean on him for 30 every year, though. Yeah, for sure. Uh, but also only so many goals can be scored on that line. Like, if Larkin’s scoring at a Unreal clip, that’s because Raymond’s just passing the puck all the time and vice versa. Like, if Raymond’s scoring a bunch, it’s probably because Larkin’s feeding him. And he’s got 20 points in 17 games right now. Only five of those are goals. He has 15 assists to start the year. He almost is at an assist per game. 15 assists in 17 games. He’s been very very good. Kind of underrated for to start the season because of the fact that he hasn’t been finding the net too much. Uh Alex Debrink obviously gets a goal against the Rangers. He has two against the Buffalo Sabres. One of them was kind of lucky. Went off Samuelson out front on the power play, but hey, you put the puck on net, good things tend to happen. That’s what, five goals for him in the last three games. He had two against Anaheim, two against Buffalo, one that he stole from Raymond against the Rangers. And for for the record, I do not fault Alex de Brinket for doing what he did as that puck cross the goal line. Not at all. Nothing in my opinion, no goal is 100% until it’s 100% across the goal line. You never know what kind of wacky stuff’s going to happen. So, I don’t I do not blame him, and I’m sure Raymond doesn’t either, for taking a whack at that as is trickling in. And uh yeah, he’s been he he’s back. He’s scoring goals again and that’s what you need out of Alex to bring it. I think he’s second on the team now in goals. I wouldn’t be surprised if he uh is catching up to Dylan Larkin here shortly, but you know Dylan Lin scored on Saturday as well. So that that top line with the Brinket and that power play reunited, that super power play as we call it is uh beginning to produce again as the power play also scored twice. Yeah, and that’s obviously something that we have talked about at, you know, Nauseium so far or not so far, but over the last probably two weeks now, uh, it’s just special teams in general, but obviously the power play has been a big topic of conversation. uh this weekend they they revert back to the the what do we even call it like the super power play line like where I know at the end of last week we kind of talked about divide and conquer and and the the different power plays and in practice and whatnot and would that stay and would that maintain whatever and this weekend they just went right back to the well and just put all of the best power play you know players on the team all on that top line and I mean they needed every minute. The the one power play they scored on, um I I think they were on the night on the ice together for like 93 or 95 uninterrupted seconds. Like they, you know, when you got a power play unit that has all of your talent on it, you’re going to kind of leave it out there to dry, so to say. The one frustration I have is they cannot stop giving up at least one really high danger short-handed opportunity on like seemingly every night on the power play. Uh obviously they gave up another shorty uh against Buffalo and then against I almost just said Texas against New York on Sunday they allow another breakaway on the power play where Talbot had to make a really nice save. So, I think that that is something you obviously want to nib in the bud. Not breaking any news with that take. Uh, but yeah, that it’s Well, again, that goes back to what I was talking about earlier with the more exciter yips along the blue line. He has been a little shaky along the blue line. Uh, to say the least the last few games, which is actually what got probably got got him bumped off of power play unit one. As you saw against New York, ASP was quarterbacking PP1 and Cider was quarterbacking PP2 and he turned the puck over again for another breakaway which I think it was Debrink got back on and was able to break up. But anyways, one last thing about the Buffalo game. Gibson wasn’t terrible, was not great. And that’s been kind of the trend with Gibson. He’s been overall very meh. like he makes the saves he should, but when you need him to make a clutch save like an overtime or on the breakaway, I’ve seen him get beat low blocker side on at least two or three breakaways this season already, he doesn’t make that save. And you need him to be able to step up and make clutch saves in clutch situations if you want to win hockey games. Having a goal can make all the basic saves, that’s great. But if you want to steal games, you need a goalie who can steal saves. And he just hasn’t really done it all too much this season. For sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, no, 100%. And I think that on the flip side, you have uh, you know, Sunday Cam Talbot was phenomenal. He’s pretty good. Well, I’d argue Jonathan Quick was even better than that, but Ta got the W. We’ll talk about that. I don’t think that’s an argument. I think Jonathan Quick was going to be my difference maker until the Wings got the go-ahead goal. So, we will talk about that game, I guess, more in depth. We’ve kind of talked about it here and there as you know these weekend games kind of meld together when hot players stay hot. But we’ll talk about it more intentionally here in segment 3. Stay tuned to Lockdown Red Wings. Today’s episode’s brought to you by FanDuel. Segment three, lockdown Red Wings podcast. Scotty, difference maker for the New York Rangers game. What do you got? Yeah, I mean I again kind of easy, but I I I really do think Lucas Raymond was one of the best players on the ice in this game. Like I said, it was really going to be Jonathan Quick. And I I guess even to piggyback off of that. I I really do think you could still argue a difference maker. And I don’t think it’s fair maybe to make it one of the two biggest ones in the game, but it is still an inability to finish in front of the net. And like maybe this is somewhat of a a you know, what came first chicken or the egg situation. Like is it Jonathan Quick was insane or was it the the fact that the Wings couldn’t finish around the net? But we just have enough of a sample size where I’m going to say it’s probably a little bit of both. And like it’s probably a little bit on the wings, too. They had so many This should have been like a five to one win, dude. They had so many opportunities right in front of the net and just could not bury the puck in the net. So that was kind of frustrating. But again, they did win ultimately. We’re all happy. Yay, sunshine and rainbows. So, I’ll go with Lucas Raymond. But, um, I I think that that is certainly something that I continued to notice in this game. They certainly got better as the night wore on. Uh, I think the third period was by far the Red Wings best period, and I don’t know if anyone would disagree with me on that one. In the third period, they carried 59% of the shot attempts and 72% of the expected goal share at five on five. And you know, that was the best period they had. In the first period, it was kind of the opposite. They may have gone to the locker room with the edge in shots, but I felt New York really, I would argue, carried the play. It’s close because again, you’re right, the Red Wings were throwing the puck at the net from everywhere, but it was when the Rangers established the zone that I felt the Rangers were super dangerous. And I felt the the Rangers established the zone far more and far easier than the Red Wings could. Red Wings had some trouble for the first half of this game in transition, getting the puck up ice and then getting the puck in the offensive zone and keeping it there. A lot of losing the puck along the boards in the offensive zone. I noticed that just completely killed offense before it could get started. The third period that finally changed and they were rewarded with a late goal by Lucas Raymond. Honestly, man, I don’t I don’t really know who I got as differencemaker in this one because I mean, Lucas Raymond was the literal difference maker and I almost want to go with Jonathan Quick anyways just because they lost in regulation, but the dude put up like 40 plus saves in this game. Only won two to one, right? The fact that this was a tie game in the third period is pretty much solely because of that. I’ll go, you know what? How about this? I’ll go goending for both teams. Sure. Obviously, Quick was the better goalender in this one, but you know, Cam Talbot, for what it’s worth, wasn’t tested a bunch, but he made the saves he needed to. He had a 947 save percentage, 18 saves on 19 shots before it really locked it down defensively. He just lost like he just like didn’t know where it was. Yeah. Yeah. Because he got deflected in front of him. He didn’t see it. Well, it was a dead rebound. Yeah. Right. Yeah. So I and I maybe even extend that to the Red Wings defense like not the defense itself but the team defensive lead I thought was really good in the third period. Uh especially after they took that 2-1 lead late. They really locked it down. Of course I wasn’t a big fan again of Edmonson trying to go for the empty net instead of like they were talking about on the broadcast going you know to the other side of the rink long ways not you know down the ice east west rather than north and south to try and drain the clock instead of giving the Red Wings another defensive zone faceoff. But they were winning faceoffs all night long, too. They dominated the faceoff circle. So, even when they were put in those positions, they won possession. So, locking it down defensively, baby. For sure. Well, and and I I think the faceoffs obviously, you know, joking aside, my favorite stat, but like that that is something that was a big difference on special teams as well. I mean, you saw that not only getting the puck in the offensive zone and winning faceoffs there so that you can retain possession, not get an immediate clear, but also on the kill as well. Um, a lot of special teams stuff going on on Sunday on both sides. Uh, one of the worst delay calls I’ve ever seen literally in my entire life. Maybe that’s the difference maker cuz it would have been a shut out had that not happened. I I thought about that. Let’s talk about that, Scotty. the officiating recently. I feel like going back to the first Ducks game in Anaheim has been some of the tickiest tackiest calls I’ve ever seen. That’s not ticky tacky though cuz ticky tack is like, “Oh, technically that’s it.” But like, no, that’s just awful officiating. That’s that’s just the So, did you did you hear what they said was the reason? Like, it wasn’t about it being delay of game because he was in the D zone, which he wasn’t. It was about clearly he wasn’t. Yeah. If it’s not in the D zone, it’s literally just subjective at that point. It’s like, well, if you think it’s on purpose, then you can just call a penalty. I don’t know how you can make that call. And that’s the most frustrating part because it led directly to a short-handed goal against power play. There’s no like there’s no like arguing it. Like some one of the stripes can just be like, “Yeah, well, pretty sure that was on purpose.” And you just like, “What are you supposed to say to that?” Okay. Like cool, man. And that doesn’t happen. they don’t go on the power play and and maybe they don’t score. So watching that in real time, I’m like, how can you even come to that conclusion like Morett Cider was racing to the puck and was just trying to reverse it up the ice away from danger before it got in the defensive zone and it was on its edge and he flung it into the bench because of that. I don’t understand how a referee can make that call. I just don’t understand how you view I’ve never seen that call before. I don’t know how you view that and say that that is a call and then they kill that and then you see the weakest holding call ever on the Rangers which was absolutely a makeup call. Comfort was 100% rook hooking that player and they called that player for holding when the puck the stick was in his stomach. So I mean that was a makeup call and the officiating is just the and I’m sure we say this every single year. You can I I 100% guarantee you can rewind the clock to about a year from last year from today and find me saying something similar, but man, the officiating has been terrible this season. It’s been so bad. And this last stretch since in Anaheim has been particularly awful. Thoughts on Jonathan Quick taking it personally that Appleton shot with a millisecond after the buzzer sounded? I didn’t get it. I don’t understand it because you weren’t even in net, dude. you were literally on the bench and then he shot the puck half a second after the the buzzer went. So, it’s kind of still in that grace period where it’s like, you know, he’s trying to score on the empty net, but like even if it even if it wasn’t I agree with you. I I think the the biggest reason why I feel comfortable saying I agree with you is because there was two Rangers literally within an arms reach of Appleton after he did it and neither of them cared. So, right, like clearly this was just, you know, Quick and you know, Quick’s uh probably going to be in the Hall of Fame here in in the next like five years, like whatever. But, um yeah, like I I I didn’t get that at all. And and like it’s not going to change my opinion on Jonathan Quick. I think he’s pro he’s still a pretty good guy and he’s a Hall of Fame goalender. But that was a soft that was a soft moment from this country in our lifetimes for sure. So, it’s definitely a soft moment for Jonathan Quick to be mad about Appleton shooting it into the empty net with, you know, with time expiring when you’re literally on the bench like you had nothing to do and then going after him. Weird play. Also, what were your thoughts? Color rush. Centennial versentennial. Yeah, I I liked it. I loved it. Um, you want some more of it? Yeah. Yeah, me too. I’m a big fan of colored jersey versus colored jersey. Like that’s just I think that always it not always hyperbolic. I when the colors go well together, it looks good. And the Red Wings red with the Rangers or especially the Toronto blue because in that situation it’s literally red versus blue because the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have the red accents that the Rangers do. But it looks so so clean. And those two Centennial, I was hoping they would do that when the Rangers came to Detroit. I was so thrilled when I saw them walking out in their Centennial jerseys. It looked really good because the red versus the blue, especially with those Centennial era uniforms, just it it was such a good color combination. For sure. Yeah, for sure. I I completely agree. I also want to shout out too, I really liked Andrew Cop’s game in this one. He had a couple he looked like he had an extra jump in his step in this game. He had a couple really good opportunities uh to score some goals. He their their line as a whole only gave up 03 expected goals against that five on five. 93% expected goal share. Uh so fourth line was effective even if they don’t score, but they still need to find more scoring from the uh bottom six because it’s not coming right now. All the all the goals scored this weekend were top six. Yeah. And I I think I mean we got off days this week and not only that, we’ve already talked about that three or four times over the last three weeks and I’m sure we’ll talk about it again. So, right. All right. Two more things. Thoughts on ASP port uh power play quarterback one? How do you think he did? Uh fine. I I think there’s still a couple of moments when he, you know, just let it rip from the blue line and I would have liked a little bit maybe like just give it to Patrick Kane. I don’t know. Like it seems like a good idea to me. But um yeah, I didn’t think he looked out of place out there either. Yeah, there was a moment at five on five where ASP was walking the blue line and Sherro was sliding back and he just stick up in the air ready to blast it and instead ASP decided to shoot and it shot was blocked and they came back the other way. So that was at five on five obviously, but uh I liked I like the upside that I see out of ASP on the power play. He just needs to I think he’s still kind of almost panicking a little bit because it’s a physical game of the game. I don’t know if it’s Yeah. Like it’s just adjusting to the fastest paced hockey on the planet, you know. Yeah. And then Danielson, two opportunities for his first career goal in back-to-back games where he was absolutely stoned by the goalender. Ellison in the first game and then Jonathan Quick in the second game late in the the third period. But Danielson’s looking really good. He looks I’ve been saying he looks comfortable. Yeah, for sure. So that about does it. You have any final thoughts, Scotty? I don’t think so, man. We ball. We’ll we’ll take three or four. We do ball. The Red Wings take three of four this weekend, losing to the Buffalo Savers and then beating the New York Rangers. They now sit second place in the Atlantic division behind, of course, who else? The Boston Bruins, who just don’t go away. Uh 23 points, trailing just one point behind Boston, 117 and one. We’ll be back with a new episode tomorrow. Stay tuned for that. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.

Lucas Raymond is red hot, scoring 5-points over the weekend helping Detroit secure 3/4 points. While we will take `1-0-1 weekend, how it happened can’t be ignored. A blown 4-1 lead against the Sabres on Saturday meant getting just 1 of a possible 2 points. But, on Sunday the Red Wings grinded out a win in New York against a very tough defensive team in the Rangers. #LGRW

  1. In a vacuum, really great week for the wings. 5 of 6 points with a couple wins over good teams. 2nd in the Atlantic at the moment. Larkin, ray, and cat look amazing. But boy, does that Sabres loss leave a bad taste your mouth or what? Hopefully they keep this momentum rolling into next week. LGRW

  2. Heres to hoping we never see seider on the top pp unit ever again. So tired of the German turnover machine. How many times have we watched him turn the puck over and then trip over the blue line trying to turn around?

  3. With how the Lions played this Reekend, I’m super happy the Wings got 3/4 points. Disappointing to mess up that Buffalo game, but overall, it’s good.

  4. 27:52 Brian your 100% wrong and need to rewatch the holding call. The Rangers player was holding the stick and preventing the Red Wing from making a play on the puck. The puck then came back to the player who had not let go and was still holding his stick forcing the Red Wing player to drop his stick to prevent a call against. The Ref's got that one correct, it was not a make up call.

  5. The wings collapsing in the D-zone is hard to watch. Clean breakouts have been a struggle & missed assignments cost us every time. Todd has the ability to get the most out of the guys and optimisitic he'll improve our chances this year for the PO's. JT needs to bury his breakaways too!

  6. I hate how Brian starts every episode by asking “whats your difference maker?” It’s such a stupid question and you can tell Scott hates answering it most of the time. Why not just ask his thoughts on the game?

  7. I get why players don't want to go to the net. I play pickup with my son, and he was told by a local junior coach that he has an NHL shot. Also used to play with Al Iafrate's cousin, who had a great shot (good genes) and used to occasionally break the glass behind the net with it. It takes big cojones to stand in there with an NHL shot coming from the point and a D-man pushing you or leaning on you.

But I guess when you're getting paid 100's of thousands or millions of dollars to play, you go to the net.

  8. Gibson made 2-3 huge game changing saves in the first period against Buffalo. It’s not true that he’s not making big important saves.

Talbot has gotten the game after the team gets talked to by the coach almost every time. This has made him look better because the team plays way better after those talks.

  9. Why did the Rangers primarily focus on mobbing Larkin when he didn't even take the shot?!? Appleton takes the shot, Quick goes at him, the rest of the Rangers seize the opportunity to gang beat our Captain. I love some fights and scrums, but seeing him in the middle of 5-6 Rangers pissed me off a bit.

  10. Probably their best game all season tonight. I thought they were going to implode again. But man, they need much more from any forward not named Raymond, Larkin, Cat or Kane. That 2nd line has no chemistry. Finnie is fading. Maybe he should go to GR and get some confidence back. And Compher as a 2C is a train wreck. I hoped Kasper could fill that void. He's on a major sophomore slump. Danielson is not ready.

  11. What do you think is going on with Seider on the blue line? He used to prevent almost everything from getting by him on the PP. This season, he's bobbling it and causing shorthanded breakaways. I don't get the regression.

  12. Redwings are 1 point out of first in the division and have a winning home and away record. More importantly (for me), they haven't let a losing streak go more than 3 games. Overall it's a good start to the season.

  13. I didn't see the game against Buffalo so I don't want to come out and rip Gibson's goal tending. But I think it is fair to say he needs to styep up his game. Talbot looked good against the Rangers. I juust don't have the confidence in Gibson as I do in Talbot. Ray L

  14. Quick was amazing for the Rangers yesterday. The Wings played a very strong game on both offense abnd defense. Quick kept it as close as possible. The Wings are fortunate that they didn't score more goals because they would likely fall apart. I don't understand why Quick reacted as he did to the empty net goal attempt at the end of the game. But the guy has had a great career and a great game. Thank you guys. Ray L

  15. So does anyone think Quick deserves a suspension since he actively left the bench in sole purpuse to pick a fight? I would say no at first, but the way Witkowski got 10 games suspension you can argue was simular situation (in Witkowski case he got slashed when he already had got into the bench and then goated into coming back out there when he got speared once he turned around, he actually tried to leave TWICE but got punched in the back of his head from the bench once he was about to leave after ref eventually told him to…)

What was Quick's reason, other then acting as a child? I know it's not exactly the same but hear me out… I just remember the conversation after the Witkowski thing happened (it was simular to the degree of what happened on the ice, which was not much, just a few players hugging it out and no real punches thrown) that these rules are enforced to avoid more then 5 players each on the ice fighting and these bench clear brawls from the 70/80s etc the "new NHL" don't want…

The Witkowski thing wasnt though from what i can remember that he was specifically "told to leave the ice" and after that he "choose" to ignore it and therefore it was a clear cut suspension? Which is the explanation i got after asking this question after the game last night… No, from what I remember and see watching back on it all, it was simply that he entered the ice as an "extra", it wasnt during any type of play… This happened during a TV commercial break and Witkowski was leaving the penalty box after he had ragdolled a Calgary player in a fight, and he had JUST stepped his skates onto the bench when someone standing on the ice (Tkachuk) cowardly took a shot at him (tapped him with his stick when he already was off ice) while yapping and challenged him… Here is the video and reasoning behind it, they first said it was a "gray area" and should not be a suspension, but it eventually was simply because he entered the ice in purpuse for altercation, that's it. —-> https://youtu.be/kn-UEQB-pVg?si=cZHnq2ezwS6hlt1c

So if Tkachuk would have had the balls to do that while he was still on the ice (meaning skating from the penalty box towards the bench), there would have been no suspension (which the Tkachuk rat likely knew and why he did it to goat a player with a heckuva less salary then him to get a suspension and a large part of his salary removed), right? That is the explanation i was given at the time from the Detroit broadcast group… That as soon as a player steps into the bench, you are not allowed to enter the ice in any altercation, the purpuse of this is again to avoid these bench clearing brawls…

Sure, it's not the very same situation but it kind of where in a way, no? The game was over, there is no play. Quick had no reason to leave the bench to start a fight? And don't give me the explanation "well why was Detroit team out on the ice", it's not the same… Players usually comes out on the ice after a game is over to go to the goalie and give him a pat, the goalie was already on the bench so… What reason did Quick have to go on the ice? He even removed his helmet before doing so looking for a fight… After the game ends and there is no goalie left on the ice, players just leave for their dressing rooms, which you do as the home team from the bench area, only the road team has to go on the ice to enter their part of the visiting team dressing room, which in most arenas are located on the other side of the rink (in the corner behind your goalie) that you have to skate out on the ice to enter…

So again, i understand people will be saying that these situations are wildly diffrent but think it COULD be applied while it obviously isnt the very exact scenario… I only remember how the suspension got explained to me and it was purely because you are not allowed to be in any scrums once you are on the bench, period. Which i interpret in this simply; once you have left the ice during a play, which in Witkowski case was the moment he stepped onto the bench from the box, that counted as leaving "the play on the ice", and in Quick's case he left "the play on the ice" when he got to the bench for an extra skater… Again, sure it's not the exact same situation but still i thought the Witkowski suspension was really, REALLY silly because he litterly just took a step on the ice to defend himself for a second because he was attacked and aggrevated, he didn't do it out of nowhere just to start crap, he got provoked into it from one of the leauges biggest agitators in Tkachuk… Quick had ZERO reason whatsoever to enter the ice when he was already on the bench and it was obviously with a purpuse when he even removed his helmet before it (getting ready to fight)…

Am i so far off based here in making the comparassion? I'll add this before i get jumped for being "soft" or whatever guys who still are living in the broadway bullies 70's days and think everything that doesn't completly kill a person on the ice should be allowed lol… I would NOT think this is worthy of a suspension IF the Witkowski one didn’t happen… But he got suspended for something really silly and i would argue that suspension was less entended then Quick going out there with a purpuse when nobody else had a thought about it, while Witkowski was basically hounded and provoked into the situation…

Just my observations… Sorry for the long text, its just how my hyperactive ADHD brain works lol… Anyways, f*ck the Rangers, great team road win! #LGRW

  16. Overall we exactly where we were before Stevie came back I c no change. NO BIG D hard hitting D-man no one with the nuts to call these kids out for bs play. Edvison Johanson nigar even Raymond pelika ok d wise but nothing on offense at all .no hitting once again . embarrassing win over SJ and cider and his crappy play , has he hit anyone yet ? I mean come on al.osy 40 GOALS 8 games are you kidding me happy about what 40 in 8 games look at where we were before last 8 games

  17. I had a fiend that was a musician, and seemingly couldn't enjoy listening to music because he would critique what he was listening too, I worked as a chef, and also lacked the capacity to enjoy eating my meal at a restaurant because I would critique the food. You guys obviously can't just enjoy a Red Wings Game without nitpicking the win or lose.

  18. The scariest part about this whole game was they understand the system now. Now that they understand the system they're having fun and that's trickling into their creative side that's making a lot of creative passes and shots. That was a really fun game to watch.

  19. Stylistically, The last time I saw a Wings team played that style of game. They had dotsuke and zatterberg and lidstrom still on the team. Stylistically it was reminiscent of those times. That was a good sign. If they can start reproducing this they'll learn who they actually can be and who they are. That was definitely much closer to a Todd M. style game.

  20. Obviously i'm talking about the rangers game below. Although we don't look as talented or as good as those old teams , the T. M. style was finally coming through.
