Willie McCovey made quite the first impression in San Francisco. The San Francisco first baseman was named the unanimous NL Rookie of the Year on this day in 1959 after hitting .354 with 13 homers and 38 RBI in just 52 games.

  1. Amazing to have won having just played in 52 games. Reminds me of Gary Sanchez when he was the Rookie of the Year runner-up. He finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2016, despite playing in only 53 games in his breakout season.

  2. The voters were proven correct when Stretch won the MVP 10 years later in a NL loaded with Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, & Roberto Clemente.
