[Tyler Koerth] Chicago Cubs 24 year old prospect Owen Ayers wins 2025 AFL Breakout Player of the Year award

  1. While it should be noted that the pitching in the AFL is usually pretty bad (teams generally protect their best pitching prospects from undue pitching loads) this was a good showing. His batted ball data was legitimately good and he got good reviews on his receiving (which for a prospect transitioning to the position is nice to hear).

Ayers will be the rare case of a position player at his age at the levels he will see (South Ben and Tennessee if things go well at age 25) that remains on the fringe of prospect status. I would go ranking him in the top-20 yet, but there’s enough helium there that he’s worth a follow.
