“Most will go to pitching staff” aka 8 middle relievers and Kenley Jansen on 1 year contracts who they will choose not to trade at the deadline while on pace to win 72 games
“Big spender” = fat contract on an aging batter who will be productive for half a year and ignore the pitching needs

I might sound crazy but I think they do have a path to contention. Sign a higher end SP, Okamoto, Jansen and another reliever. Trade Ward for a mid tier starter. That’s probably 60-70M next year, doable considering Rendon is off the books the year after.
