NO BRAINER: St. Louis Cardinals PROTECT Top Prospects Leonardo Bernal & Joshua Baez in Roster Move
The St. Louis Cardinals made their 40man roster additions on Tuesday which included a top 100 prospect. Hey, it’s JD from Lockton Cardinals and the rule five protection deadline passed at 5:00 pm and the Cardinals have added catcher Leonardo Bernal, outfielder Joshua Bayz and left-handed pitchers Bryson Mottz and Cooper Jerpy to their 40man roster to protect them from exposure to the rule five draft. Right-handed pitcher Jorge Akala was DFA. Now, the Cooper Jerpy protection was one that some people were on the fence about because he was hurt all year, but for an organization that is starving for young controllable pitching, it made sense to hang on to the unorthodox left-hander who should be good to go in 2026. Bernal is your top 100 prospect per MLB pipeline. He was a no-brainer. Joshua Bayz just had a breakout year at DoubleA, so also a no-brainer. And Lefty Bryson Mottz was their 21st ranked prospect. And of course, he’s in the young controllable starter category as well. Alcala getting DFA opened up that fourth spot on the 40man roster, which is now full.
