REPORT: The Next Move For New York Jets: Aiming At Finding A Franchise Quarterback

All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, there was a pretty interesting report coming out from Ian Rapaort of the NFL Network. Came out a couple days ago, but I really wanted to dive into it here. It’s in regards to the future of the quarterback position with this team. Now, there was a small little video clip attached. Of course, I’ll leave it linked down below in the description box, but the report centered around the Jets making their bold moves in Rapaort’s words, trading away Kuna Williams, trading away Sasker, adding all these first round picks, five over the next two seasons, plus we have that extra second round pick, you know, in this year’s class, which is awesome, you know, especially because we don’t have that third round pick because of the whole Hassan Reic trade. To have two twos this year is sweet. But in any case, Rapaort tweeted out a look at the Jets making their bold moves aimed at finding a franchise quarterback. Now, a little later on in that video clip, he also talks about Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor not being the solution for the Jets. In other words, neither guy is going to be here for the long term. That was essentially the point that Rapaort was alluding to. And so I I really think there’s three potential outcomes when it comes to the Jets quarterback position, right, for 2026. The first option, the Jets finish with the first pick, the second pick, the third pick, and they draft take your pick. Mendoza. I know there’s a lot of fans that love Tai Simpson. And I think it really feels like right now, and again, I I do feel like it’s foolish to look at a draft class in November and say, “Oh, this doesn’t have this class doesn’t have much talent.” It’s November, right? We’ve I mean, how many combine risers, proday risers, private workout? I mean, look at Jackson Dart last season. His stock only started to rise after he got done playing football. Senior Bowl in February, he was labeled as a third round pick, maybe a second rounder. He becomes a firstrounder and the Giants trade picks to go up and land dart. So, we don’t have all the answers right now. We don’t have the measurements. We don’t have the combine statistics, the athleticism statistics, height, weight, speed, all that stuff. And all it’s going to, you know, it’s going to come in due time. And so I don’t want to look at this draft class and say, “Oh, you know, it’s it’s not as talented as 2027 and 2028.” Yeah, on paper right now, it might not be, but strange things happen in the NFL. Really strange things happen when it comes to draft prospects and how that whole process works. But in any case, again, that is the first option. We go out and and land a Mendoza at one, at two, whatever. You can argue trading up in the draft. Maybe that’s what Rapaort was alluding to here. They’re making their bold moves, trading away Saw, trading away Quinnon. We’ve added picks. Now we are more capable, more suited to trade up. If say the Titans land the first pick, we’re at five. We need to jump the Saints. We need to jump the Cleveland Browns. We need that first overall pick and it’s a bidding war say between the Saints and the Jets. Yeah, the the Jets are they they can come to the table and offer more. Is that the right path? Debatable, but it’s still an option nonetheless. The second point again of finding a franchise quarterback here is to trade for a proven veteran in the offseason. Now, we’ve talked a lot about the realistic possibility of Kyler Murray. Very divisive topic. Not a lot of fans want Kyler Murray. I personally don’t think it’s the worst option in the world. I think for me, there’s a couple different avenues that I would rather travel down first. But I definitely could see the Jets being interested in acquiring Kyler Murray given the state of the team, understanding the amount of draft picks that we have. You’re going I mean, you’re essentially going to be upgrading at the quarterback position with a former number one overall pick and you don’t have to deal a first. My assumption is the Jets or any team wouldn’t have to actually trade a first round pick to land Kyler. So from that standpoint, you can, you know, you can trade a second and a future pick, a second and a mid-rounder, be at a zero, you’re you’re not even at a net loss of draft picks. You are still in the excess pool of draft picks while also finding the short-term option at quarterback potentially long-term. But outside of Kyler, it’s tough to pinpoint, you know, which quarterback could be on the move. You know, I feel like a lot of it is just, you know, kind of I I mean, smoke is doesn’t even feel like the right word either because it just kind of feels like almost a pipe dream, right? Like I’ve seen the argument trade for Joe Burrow. that just feels totally fan pushed as if, you know, there’s going to be this assumption that Joe Burrow does not want to play for the Bengals and maybe he refuses to play and he puts in a trade request and then the Bengals simply honor that and take, you know, a package in for Burrow. You I I I feel like that is like sub 1% chance of of actually happening. Yeah, I think Burrows may be a little frustrated with Cincinnati, but I just I mean they have done they’ve built the offense around Joe Burrow. They have signed and committed a lot of money to his guys and T. Higgins and Jamar Chase, they’ve made a lot of moves on the offensive line. I I mean, that’s just a team that has so much offensive firepower. In the event that Joe Burrow does in fact in the crazy hypothetical world that Joe Burrow does actually request a trade and the Bengals for whatever reason do decide to trade him. I don’t know if Burrow would view the Jets as a legitimate upgrade. You know, if anything, it would just be like a lateral move. And there’s a chance that Burrow could actually look at the Jets and say, “Why would I want to go there?” You know, this is a team that does not have nearly the amount of weapons that I have on the offensive side. Um, so, uh, ju just kind of a weird fit. And then you could throw out other guys, like I’ve seen Trevor Lawrence, his name be, uh, get thrown around a little bit. He’s on a a big money deal. But the Jags are winning games. And the really the main the big important question that you have to ask here. If you’re the fan of another team, if you are a front office member or a coach of another team, what’s the alternative? You know, if the if the Bengals trade away Joe Burrow and get like a ton of draft picks, what do they do? How do they how do you sell that to the fans? If the Jaguars trade Trevor Lawrence and say they get back whatever two, three first round picks or whatever, what’s their plan of attack to then package those picks and trade up for Mendoza and you hope that Mendoza or Simpson or whoever can be as good as Trevor Lawrence in year one? Like it’s just a lot of moving parts. And you can argue, okay, maybe Liam Cohen and Lawrence don’t get along and stuff, but is there actual like real confirmation of that? I’m not sure. Maybe the Texans are are feel like they they’ve they’ve capped out CJ Strad’s talent. There’s a lot of guys that you can just start picking out, you know, uh hypothetical or asking hypo hypothetical questions with, but it just feels very murky waters, right? we we are we we we’re in the field of hoping things are going to happen as opposed to things are imminent. This guy’s actually going to be moved. Kind of like Aaron Rogers when he left Green Bay, uh Deshun Watson when he left Houston, Jay Cutler when he left the Denver Broncos. Like there were like there was a pretty big expectation that these guys were going to be moved at some point. you don’t really get that same feeling with Joe Burrow or CJ Strad at this point in time, no matter how many hypothetical questions that uh, you know, fans want to ask here. So, that’s the second path that they can travel down, right? Trading for an established quarterback. And then that here’s the here’s my here’s the third path, right? And this is the one that I I don’t want. I don’t want the Jets to go down this path. Quite frankly, if the Jets do decide to go down this path, I don’t know how long Aaron Glenn would actually survive as Jets head coach. You know, I mean, there are fans that want Glenn fired right now. So, here’s the path. The Jets maybe want to shoot or maybe they have their eyes on a quarterback that’s projected to come out in 2027. Take your pick on whoever you know you’re interested in. A Julian Sam. I personally think Dante Moore goes back to school. I think Lenora Cers goes back to school. We’re in this hypothetical world, right, where the Jets are looking at someone. They’re honing in on someone in 2027. People are still talking a lot about Arch Manning and and whatnot. And so instead of going first round quarterback this year, second round quarterback this year, instead of trading for one of these, you know, proven, you know, someone that you can feel like is going to be starting games and have a bit of an upside and they actually give you a competitive chance. They go out and they try to sign like a one-year bridge veteran. Let’s just pull up the 2026 free agent quarterback list right now because it is not looking great, right? We have Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers. Both guys are just 0% chance of that actually happening. I think Jones will be back with the Colts. Who knows what’s going to happen with Rogers? You have Russell Wilson, Marcus Mariota, Zack Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Flago, Kenny Picket, Jimmy G, Case Keenum, Trabiscy, Trey Lance, Josh Johnson, uh Malik man. Malik Willis, Carson Wentz, Bridgewwater, Gardenner Menchu, Tommy Devito, Sam Howell. I just don’t think that Aaron Glenn can sell a quarterback like that. Like, if if if we hit free agency, we’re spending money, we’re adding some pieces, we’re adding another wide receiver, we’re adding, you know, take your pick on whatever position of need you want to target. We’re locking these positions down. But then we sign, you know, Marcus Mariota to a one-year $12 million deal, one year 10 mil or something to be the one-year bridge to get us to to uh 2027 and we’re losing games because we don’t have a quarterback. I just don’t know if Glenn could survive another 17game season if the Jets are losing, if we still have not found a quarterback and once again we are finishing with like four or five wins. And also, how well would that actually go over in the locker room? You know, how how could you sell and and I like some of these guys, you know, I think they’re capable backups, you know, backup duty. Okay, spot star here, spot start there. They have to play for two weeks. Okay, you like Joe Flacco in Cincinnati. I don’t see why the Bengals would allow Flaco to leave if he doesn’t retire. And I also don’t see Flaco resigning with the Jets. Just say you’re Darren Muji and Aaron Glenn and you know if this season goes the way it does and we continue to look how we’ve you know how we’ve performed so far and we we continue to lose. Uh maybe maybe we win a couple games and we finish with I don’t know four or five wins. I don’t know how we hit the off seasonason with this amount of draft picks with this amount of cap space and we sign Russ to a one-year 11 million deal. We sign Kenny Picket or Jimmy G or Trabiscy or Mariota or we bring back Tyrod Taylor, Case Keenum, Carson Wentz and say this is our option. Is that going to sit well with Germaine Johnson who wants to turn this thing around as quickly as possible? How is that going to sit with Garrett Wilson who desperately just wants to be competitive on the offensive side of the football? How is it going to sit with these guy? Will McDonald, the Will McDonald’s of the world, you already know that if Bree Hall sits down with the Jets and they start talking about contract extensions, he’s going to ask, “What’s the plan at quarterback?” If the answer is Carson Wentz, if the answer is Jimmy G on a one-year deal, Bree isn’t coming back to that. So, that is the third kind of sketchy path that I just simply don’t want to do. I either want to shoot for one of these guys in the draft this year up at the top. But if you don’t love someone, then don’t force it. Right? That’s under the assumption that the that the Jets love Mendoza, right? If the Jets love Mendoza, he loves the Jets, you feel like that’s a great great marriage, it’s going to be a great fit there. They can build the offense around him. they’ve, you know, equipped the offense with skilled players. We maybe brought in a veteran quarterback to be the veteran backup, not to be the long-term starter, you know, um, and they want to make that happen, but the only problem is you are at four and you need to get to one, you need to get to two, okay, now we can start talking about trading up, but if Mendoza is on the board and the Jets are like, uh, we don’t really think he’s going to be the long-term fit. We we have a lot of red flags. have questions about his game here, here, and here, then you don’t take a quarterback there. You just don’t do it. You don’t just take it and say, “Hopefully it works with the first freaking pick in the draft, with the third pick in the draft, second pick.” You just don’t do it. I think ideally in a perfect world, Mendoza fits what the Jets want to do. Mendoza wants to come to New York. The Jets buy in. They really like his skill set. I personally think in this type of offense, he would function really, really well. I mean, he’s kind of the antithesis to Fields in a lot of ways, right? Quick release, quick processing, super accurate. Those are the three biggest knocks on on Justin. Um, so I think if you can get major upgrades in those three ticks, you would obviously see the offense uh perk up a little bit in the event that Mendoza starts in year one, which I kind of have a question about question about anyway. But the point is, I think ideally Mendoza, you know, if he’s the guy that fits, and you can make the same argument for, I don’t know, Ty Simpson or who, take your pick on whoever you want. The Jets fall in love with the quarterback up at the top of the draft. That quarterback is there and they don’t have to mortgage a bunch of draft picks to, you know, send off two, three firsts to go up and land him. I don’t want to be in a situation like the 49ers with Tre Lance where they’re trading away where they’re at and they’re trading away two first and they come up and they land him and it’s like a bit of a question mark. Nope. Nope. Nope. I’m not doing that. Ideally, he’s going to be on the board. If you have to maybe move up one selection and you have to trade, you know, a mid round pick or something, I’m cool with it. Um, but ideally that that’s the plan. Now, again, the other uh route is trading for a veteran. I’m cool with that as well because if you want to maybe acquire one of these vets that actually give you a fighting chance that you can actually sell to the fan base like hey he gives us a competitive shot not like and it’s no disrespect but not like Russ or Mariota or Carson Wentz like someone who can actually step in and he could be our franchise quarterback for a long time. Maybe there’s a chance that it doesn’t work out, but the Jets are like, “Okay, well, we still have three first rounders in 2027, and the team’s a lot better now after free agency, after some of these more additions than it was a couple years ago.” Um, I wouldn’t mind that at all, right? Because then you’re kind of in this win-win situation where again, if he works out, great. You have your guy and the team’s built up around him. And then if he doesn’t work out, it’s just like, okay, well, we’re really only at a loss for money and a whatever it it took to go land the guy. And we still have all this draft capital to go continue to find the next franchise quarterback in 2027. Again, the class that everyone is obsessed with. So, we’ll see what happens. Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. But, I’ll I’ll say this, the Jets are in a great great spot. Cap space, draft picks. We’re we have a lot of things going for us right now. I mean, it would be it would suck to have, you know, talking about quarterback options in 2026 and we’re looking at the the cap space projection and it’s at like 9 mil or something like that. So, anyway, thanks so much, guys. I appreciate it and as always, go Jets.

REPORT: The Next Move For New York Jets: Aiming At Finding A Franchise Quarterback

  1. It’s really not that complicated… Rookie QB target: Draft 2027.
For the 2026 draft, trade down from the first pick, stack more quality selections, and keep building a solid roster throughout 2026.
Then, only if you really, really believe in a guy, draft your rookie QB in 2027 — and let him sit as a backup for half a year or even a full year.
In 2026, the QB can be Tyrod, Brady Cook, or a free agent (don’t trade!). Justin Fields can stay as a backup if he wants.
Now we’re in the mix for a playoff spot in 2028 and beyond.
Because I genuinely believe in the way Aaron and Darren are building this thing.
    Go Jets Go!!!

  2. Most likely to get mendoza we would have to give up both first rd picks & a second ord both seconds sucks but this is what it would take! Since some of us are happy winning a few meaningless games instead of tanking!

  3. The Jets should draft positions other than QB this year. From what I've been seeing, this year's crop of QB, while they still may be good, will require a lot of nurturing and developing which is not the Jets' strength. They're better off trying to get a veteran QB (but not K. Murray) and draft a QB in next year's draft which I believe is a stronger class.

  4. If we can’t get a top pick, I’d trade a 2nd for Mac Jones. Maybe he can be the next Jones or Darnold. We’d also keep our draft capital for these next two years and if he isint it we can draft a new one in 2027.

  5. 49ers have 2 QBs and I don’t think both will be on the team next season why not get which ever one leaves both are looking good. I’d take Mack or Purdy

  6. Glen is caving into pressure the wrong way. He should start Brady Cook because winning a game is not going to do anything for the jets. He would show signs of a skilled builder. Brady Cook can show if there is talent there or not.

  7. Dont draft a QB!!

We went through this with Darnold and Wilson. Trade down the pick if possible. Let's get more players with high impact WR, CB, OL, Edge, etc.

Let's get the QB in 27'. After the team closer to compete. In 28' we'll shoot for playoffs.

That's an actual Rebuild I would be okay with

  8. I don’t see the problem bringing Joe Flacco back if he’s interested. From what I’ve seen he’s been doing a really good job for Cincinnati and if their defense was any good, he probably would have a winning record there definitely would not want to see Kyler Murray he has a bad attitude poor work ethic, the whole drama with wiping his social media when he was trying to get a new contract with the Cardinals we don’t need that New York. We got enough issues. We definitely need an established veterans quarterback and if we can find somebody in the later rounds as a QB to take a flyer on that sounds like a plan better to trade down and push our pics into the next draft then to stretch too far for somebody that’s just too risky. Knowing of course nobody’s a sure thing when drafting quarterbacks, but like some of the other comments had said we’re more than one player away from being a good team. We definitely should build from the inside out to make sure that any quarterback we have can stand up straight and not be getting their heads blown off because our line can’t hold defenders back, bolster. Our secondary on the defense may be find an edge rusher. There’s lots on the shopping list.

  9. The Jets owe Fields and Rodgers a combined 57 million next year. There will be no high price FA coming. It's going to be a rookie and Fields. I hope it's Mendoza. Big fan of the kid. I trhink he could win the job in camp. Simpson is a project and should sit for at least a season. Let's hope once officially eliminated, they decide to see if they have anything in Cook.

  10. Murry has more talent than any QB in this years class unless Sellers comes out. Why not take a chance on him and see what we have? 2027 QB class will be better, we need to be patient!

  11. For the first time in my life… I don't have any concerns with how this team will be built.

Darren Mougey is that guy. He can make good underrated moves to plug holes. We've seen he can get maximum value through trades and the vision is clear on those trades.

His contract extension on sauce showed massive long term thinking coupled with the AZ Thomas draft pick.

He can hit on late rounds and makes sensible early rounds picks even if they aren't flashy.

My biggest knock on him was the Stephens contract but even that is not looking too bad

In regards to the fields signing. Pickings were slim and the contract is not long term.

Bottom line I trust this guy. I think he got what it takes to build this roster. Rest is up to the coaching and development

  12. We better not win another game. 2-15 or 3-14 at the worst. More than 3 wins you’re not a top 5 pick since this year several other teams in the league at trash. 😂

  13. You want to trust the same guys who came up with, "Let's give up Rodgers and Adams for NOTHING, and pay Fields 20 million per year to replace them." LMAO The GM and Glen really are dumb and dumber. lol

  14. This is what we need to do…sign a mid-tier/slightly upper tier qb to a 3 yr deal (Darnold, Kirk Cousins maybe?, the former Giants qb?) then draft your next guy and MAKE HIM RIDE THE BENCH FOR TWO YEARS! Ya' know Woody…this qb development thing? The franchise "savior" isn't going to be drafted…he's going to be developed.
