Are the Eagles the best team in the NFL? So, I can’t believe I’m saying this after what I saw from the Eagles offense last night because to quote AJ Brown, it was once again a [ __ ] show on offense. In this age of offensive explosions, of Josh Allen throwing for three touchdowns and running for three touchdowns. Heck, in this age of my Dallas Cowboys opening the season by scoring 40 plus points at home three straight games, I just watched the Eagles score 10 at Green Bay and 16 against the Detroit Lions and win convincingly in both games to the point that even though last night Jaylen Herz threw for a grand total of 135 yards and Saquon averaged 3.2 at two yards per carry. Saquin is averaging 66 yards per game when a year ago he averaged 125 a game. Despite all that shitow, this defense is by far the best defense and the most intimidating defense in the league. And because of this defense, they are definitely the Eagles as a team, the best team. I said this the other day on the show. Jaylen Carter and Jordan Davis are like having two Reggie Whites playing your position in the middle of the field. They they just anchor and dominate the the center of the formation where you you can’t do anything against them. You can’t run against them. They they annihilate the pocket every time. Just blow it up and then they get up. Jordan Davis is 6′ 6 in tall and they batted down five passes last night. And I have never seen Jared Goff look that bad. He looked pretty bad on opening day against Micah at Micah. But but last night he was completely and utterly overwhelmed and he’s way better than he looked last night. Yeah. So I I look at at Jix Hunt and now Jaylen Phillips coming off the edge. They’re just they’re hard to deal with because the linebackers are all fast and athletic and then those two kid corners, Quinnon and Cooper Deene, they just cover like crazy, man. They’re all over the field getting their hands on balls. I I don’t know what’s not to love about this defense to the point that in the age of explosive offense, the defense makes them easily to me the the best team. and that it was 16 to9 and I never felt like they were threatened last night. Not not one time. And at Green Bay on Monday night, I never felt like they were threatened and it’s a 10 to7 game. That’s just who they are. And to your point, uh, Kinsey about your quote that you read. I love that quote because he said, “I watched a bunch of games.” This is Nick Serriani and and everybody’s kind of playing not to lose. They’re waiting to lose. This team just knows how to win. And the thing about the offense is when they need to hit a play, they hit a play. That’s what they do. Jaylen’s just going to He’ll hit you when he has to hit you. Whatever they need on offense, they’re going to get done on offense. And they’re I just think they’re going to win it all. I liked your Bengals to start, but without Burrow, and now they’ve just collapsed with We both like Cincinnati to start, but man, I Philly is now the team to beat, and I don’t think anybody’s going to beat them. Yeah. I I I don’t think they are the best team, but the formula works. Yeah, the form the they play great defense, don’t turn the ball over. They got four turnovers all season. Four. That’s it. They don’t turn the ball over and they executing the clutch. Then you talk about this defense, they have an eraser in the back end at Queen Young Mitchell. So, every quarterback always talk about needs a guy. Okay, we know St. Brown is is Jared Goff’s guy. He just erased him like you just he’s a great he’s just the great eraser in the back end. Yeah. You partnered that with Coop Deont you got Jaylen Phillips who has been great pickup in uh the trade. But those two guys in the middle as defensive linemen as defensive linemen we’re always taught if you can’t get there you get your hands up. Yeah. you get your hands up because batted pass is just as good as a pressure or a sack because it it helps in the back end. And they got five yesterday. That’s very rare to get five from your DTackles. That just means their awareness of the game. They’re starting to learn how to play football because young guys, they just, oh, I got to get to the quarterback. Get to quarterback. We don’t realize you can affect the game in other ways. And most importantly, they don’t make mistakes it when it matters. And that and that’s that’s how they’re winning games. And they just know how to win football games. Will I say they the best team? No. But that don’t matter cuz they winning. Who is it? Who who do you see better? Well, it’s funny you say they definitely better. It’s funny you say that. They definitely better after your spill and after your spill. Racer in the back end. Best D in the league. Make play. I thought y’all was talking about the damn Bronco. I really thought y’all was talking about the Bronco. But then I said, “Oh shit.” I had to check my notes. She said, “Well, it’s the Eagles the best.” But hey, you’re right. The Eagles, they find a way to win. Well, wait a second. Who does Riley Moss erase except himself? I I mean, who does Adori Jackson erase except himself? I don’t know. I thought he played pretty well last night. Pat Certan. Yeah, I know. Got the DMV. Not even close. That’s our eraser. Okay. He like like Quan is like one of them pencil eraser. He like one of them hole erasers you do like this with. Well, he is, but he didn’t play yesterday. If you still want, it’d be back, Skip. Well, I remember he could have played last night. I was on the phone. He could have played last night. You’re on the phone. He said if it was a playoff game, I would have played. Really? He could have played. They want to go. And that’s why I say that that they’re better. Look at what they doing. He ain’t even playing. Pastor T when he get back. Hey, look. So, wait. Are you making the case the Broncos are better than anybody? Yeah, I’m about to make it. The uh the Eagles find when we when we get there. Yeah. The Eagles, they find a way to win. They I I love how they find a way to win. They do. They offense can beat you in different type of ways. If you want to play too high and stop these guys, I guarantee you Saquon have 100 that day. You want to load that box, they’ll kill you on the outside. So, they got options. They definitely got options. They going to find a way to win. That defense is dominant. Like you said, I believe it’s better than last year. It is, honestly. And it was a damn good championship defense last year. I feel like it’s better this year. With that being said, though, [ __ ] we win. We went into Philly and gave that defense two touchdowns in a field goal in the fourth. You did. So they ain’t stand up against us in the fourth. We made the plays in the fourth. So our defense shut their ass down damn near the whole game, especially in the fourth. You know what I’m saying? If I’m if I’m really looking at it, we nine and two, they nine and two or whatever. How are we not better than them? We beat their ass. How we not? We But we got good wins. They got good wins. They got tough losses. We got tough losses. We lost two games by a total of four points. Two games we should win. We should literally be 10 and0 right now. We could be 10 and0. They could be 10 and0. I give you that, man. Listen, we dominate fourth quarters. That’s what we hang our hat on. Best defense in the league. Dominate the fourth quarter. Broncos best team in the league, man. Wow. Yeah. You You’re going to disagree with that? I got a different team. I’ll get there in a second, but I I’m I’m torn on this one. Shoot. I went back. I know where you hit it. What do you think? They just keep finding a ways to win. That defense is so good. They really are. I mean, they’re legit these last couple of weeks. You can argue with the Broncos and everything, but you could definitely argue that’s the best defense in the NFL right now. I look at it from an offensive perspective as a quarterback. All right. Well, how are we going to attack this defense if I’m going into game plan? We can’t run the ball between the tackles because you got Jordan Davis and Jaylen Carter in the middle. Well, let’s attack the edges. No, you got Nolan Smith back. Now you got Jaylen Phillips coming off the edge. Who you going to chip? Who you going to go to? Maybe we can attack the linebackers. Zack Bonds playing some damn good football. Let’s go to the outside. Mitchell’s covering everybody. Maybe we’ll go attack the slot. No, you got Cooper Deene in there playing lock down defense. There’s just there’s no way where are we going to Kobe Dean is well go watch the fourth quarter of that Broncos game and get you a game plan cuz we damn so attack they ass. Yeah, they do. But the thing I the reason I say I don’t think they’re the best team right now in the NFL and I’ve been saying it all year is because of the offense that they just it’s 10 weeks in now and it’s the same issues over and over and you wait for it to get corrected but it’s not getting corrected. And last year when you look back at this team that won the Super Bowl they were 29th in passing offense. This year they’re 28th. Okay, they haven’t thrown the ball well the last couple of seasons. Fine. But what helped them last year was they could run the ball with Saquon. They averaged 180 yards rushing per game last year, which was second in the NFL. This year, it’s non-existent. And I’ve been very tough on Kevin Patulo and his play calling. I still don’t love it. I think he can be better. There’s not any rhythm right now. They’re not finding a way to get some consistency. There’s no explosive plays. There’s not enough explosive plays. It’s too tough to go long drives over and over and have quick hitters here and there because you give yourselves too many opportunities to make mistakes. They lead the league in three and outs. They’re terrible on third down that they just they’ve got to get better on offense. But I can’t put it all on Patulo because he did a good job last night of putting guys in position to win really the last couple of weeks and sometimes Jaylen just doesn’t hit him on the outside or AJ Brown doesn’t come down with the ball or Dvonte Smith can’t make the catch or the offensive line is struggling to give Saquon some room to work even with a light box. So, the reason I don’t think they’re the best team in the NFL right now is still because of that offense. But again, they’re finding ways to win. They have some very quality wins. You guys did beat their ass at home. I’ll give you that. But overall, it’s just tough for me to say the Eagles are the best team in the NFL. But like Gerald said, who cares? They’re winning games. See, with that offense, though, is the best team, Cody. I think the best team in the NFL right now is the Rams. If I had to pick a team from top to bottom, offense, defense, from from what Chris Schula’s doing on the defensive side of the ball, the playmakers they have on offense with Matthew Stafford, Puka Nua, what you don’t you don’t say MVP. Wait a minute. I did week to week, right? The the Rams offense got dominated yesterday and suffocated. They did not get dominated. They still wait until we get to I’ll tear it all apart. They got But the Eagles though, I go back to the Eagles. But to that point, Skip, you just said the Eagles are the best team cuz they’re winning games. Their offense isn’t going out and dominating like the Rams have been. The Rams have one off game on offense and they still get the duck. They still get the job done. I know their defense played a hell of a game, but you can make the same argument for the Eagles that you’re making or like for the Rams that you’re making for the Eagles, right? That’s fair. I feel like I feel like the Eagles, he probably could force more passes or throw it deep more or they probably could take more chances on offense, but why why would you? If you got the quote unquote best defense in the league, you don’t play like that, man. You play a certain brand of football when you could stand on your defense. Like Brock Oswider our year, he could have threw it downfield more. Our Emanuel Sanders and DT used to get on him, bro. Throw that. It’s oneonone. Throw that [ __ ] And we telling them like, “Hey, don’t throw that [ __ ] right? Don’t throw that [ __ ] bro. Don’t turn the ball over, you get you 17, 19, score around there, bro, we’ll win the game.” Like, so it’s a brand of football that you play when you got a cold ass defense like that. You know what I’m saying? It’s a safe way. The fans may not like it. The the stat guys may not like it, but it’s a brand of football that you play. You know what I’m saying? When you when you got a defense like that, obviously. Go ahead. Think about even to Ke’s point the what the head coach and how he’s coaching Nick Seriani is making calls in the game based off the fact he know what his defense can do going forward on fourth down the past two weeks he like shoot look at my defense they can’t do nothing with them when you got defense like that it just it affects the whole game like you could take chances on offense going for it on fourth because you trust your defense is not going to give up points your defense is not going to allow this offense to go up and down the field. Okay. And Cody, what did you see from the Philadelphia Eagles offense when the Rams went to Philly and led 23-6 early in the third quarter? What what happened to the Phillies off the Yeah, no, they came I mean first half. They had to throw the ball down alive. Fair. But to that point is, do you think with this offense right now, it’s sustainable to be a legit team that’s going to go win the Super Bowl when they need to put the ball in Jaylen Herd’s hands to go out and make those plays? If they say the defense has an off day and they’re putting up points, you think they can go shoot out with some of these. If the Rams defense have an off day, they going to lose. If the Broncos defense have an off day, they going to lose. That’s that’s the name of the game. If somebody have an off day, they probably going to lose. But just just if if the Eagles have to throw the ball, they throw the [ __ ] out the ball. put it like that. I agree. And I like Jaylen Herz. I really do. I’m a big fan of his. I think he’s doing some things well. I just I It comes back to the play call. It comes back to consistency. It comes back to the rhythm of the offense. I just feel like when they get in those got to have it situations or it gets late in the season and they can’t run the ball well like they did last year and you’re going to have to try to be onedimensional and throw it all over the field. But they’ve been in those got to have it situations already this year and they threw the [ __ ] out the ball. And what what is usually I would be with you Cody with how the offense is but this team you think you took this away they do this. You think you took this away that Jaylen Hurst had no yards in the second half versus the Bucks and they won. You know why? Cuz the defense says screw it. We got to go score. They played the Rams, they blocked two field goals. They they’re just doing what’s so whether it’s sustainable or not don’t matter. They’re figuring out ways to win. And that’s that’s the thing about this team. They just know how to win. Agreed. I don’t know if if like Skip said, what they score 10 and 16 or 17, whatever it is. Yeah. And they won. That’s crazy. And it’s not versus no Chumps in a in a twoame win streak. You have to go back to 1997 to find this few of points that the Eagles scored in back-to-back wins. 26 points. That that’s how low that is historically. What whatever that is, you know. eight years. I think the biggest thing being an offensive guy is there’s too much talent on that offense to be able to put up points and yards and consistently be one of the best offenses in the league because they have I know they had some injuries, but they have 10 of the same 11 guys from last year. The only player that didn’t return is Mai Beckton. That’s some injuries. Sure. Then now that’s a big hit. I agree with that. But the thing that did change was Kell Moore left and Kevin Patulo took over. I just I haven’t seen enough from Pulo in this offense consistently to say they’re the best team top to bottom. Are they going to win games? Sure. That wasn’t the question. The question was are they the best team in the NFL right now? Because of that offense, it’s tough for me to say yes. They are head and shoulders above everybody. And here here’s a last thing for me. When you think about great defenses, they can go win the championship. The difference in this team is a lot of those teams don’t have the guys on offense. So, the defense has to do way more. The defense is doing a lot and this offense still got guys. That’s what makes this even scarier because if those guys hit at any point, one of them guys can hit. It could be Jaylen going off. It could be Saquon going off. It could be AJ going off. It could be Devonte going off. It don’t like got it. They got that’s what I’m saying. They got guys just the offense is not hitting the way the stat guys wanted to hit or the analytics are you looking but most a lot of defenses when I play I played them the year after they won Super Bowl defense was elite but then I’m going against Trevor Simeon so I’m like sure we got a chance today against Trevor Simeon the quarterback. That ain’t the case with this group. You know what I’m saying? So that’s where at any point that’s what makes him so dangerous because they actually have the guys to at any point we seated in Minnesota. It could, you know what I’m saying? It could happen. So and it was a very positive point last night. Jaylen Hurst threw AJ Brown 11 footballs last night and he caught seven for 49. So that was game plan that that clearly they just said let’s just get him back. Okay. So, but to that point, going back to AJ Brown, that that’s someone within the building. And I know we talk about receivers and divas, but what he said on Wednesday after practice had some merit to it to where we can’t just keep slapping a band-aid over these issues and expect our defense to bail us out every week. And he said, “I care about winning. If we truly truly care about winning, we’ve got to get this corrected.” And that’s someone that’s inside the building going through meetings and going through practice and doing all those things. So that’s what I see is just that’s a offensiveminded guy like yourself. You know what I’m saying? You got a little bit of that AJ in you like all this weapons. We need to be doing this. It need to be an explosion with all these. I saw him do it last year. No, it don’t. This ain’t last year. It don’t have to be an explosion. I’m the same guy. We got to we got to do what it takes to win. If [ __ ] we get down in the hole, all right, let’s throw the ball. If we could control the game and be dominant like Skip said and it’s [ __ ] 16 to three and we just dominating this and [ __ ] Why we need to explode? Yeah, it’s no reason. See, that’s it’s the offensive eye say all these weapons. I need to see a a bomb. I need to see something. Defensive minds like me like [ __ ] Skip. What was the score? That [ __ ] looked great. They [ __ ] dominating in this 10 to nothing. What was the score where you was with the Rams and y’all lost to Patriots in Super Bowl? [ __ ] Was it 10 to six in three years and they won Super Bowl 13 like you know what I’m saying? I’m telling you. And they had Tom Brady and Gronowski both all 100 teams had his favorite Super Bowl straight defensive battle at the end. You did pick the Lions to win the NFC. I did. What did you see last night or not see from the Lions? Man, when I picked the Lions to win this NFC North, man, I I’m I’m banking on them having a number one seed, having a great regular season, coming away with a number one seed, and having some home games. Yep. And and I don’t know if that’s gonna be the case. I still think they win the North, but I think they gonna have to go on the road to [ __ ] maybe Chicago. Yeah, maybe Green Bay, maybe Philly. They have Seattle. They have the hardest remaining schedule in the NFL. The Lions, do they? I feel like the Bears, the Bears look harder. Bears are second. Oh, yeah. Well, they neck and neck. The Bears. I still think ain’t no joke. Yeah, I think they win the North, but as far as repping representing the the NFC in the Super Bowl, man, they going to need some help. They going to have to win the North so they can get that home game. Then they going to need a upset to happen so somebody can have to come to them for another home game because if they got to go on the road and and my and my dog JG put them [ __ ] gloves on, I just don’t like it, bro. I know. I don’t need that. I can’t I can’t rock with him when he got them gloves. I [ __ ] hate it, bro. Last night he had the worst completion percentage of any quarterback this season. I believe it. I believe it% 38%. I’m losing faith of any quarterback. I’m losing faith, Skip. If they got to play outside in the playoffs, I I don’t like it. If they can if they can win in North and get an upset and and stay at home, if they at home, I’m riding with them. Okay, I got it. I first guessed this. I still don’t like Dan Campbell calling the plays. It takes him out of who he is and what he does. And what happens now when it doesn’t work like that? Doesn’t work. So you go you go 0 for five on fourth down. You you go for it on fourth which is your culture, right? We go for it and you missed all five. It was a horrible night to throw the football. It was gusting 30 35 miles an hour. So I give you that. And and obviously Jared Goff was under fire just all night long. But you you got to help him. You got to call something that will work on one of those five fourth downs because you you kept he did though. They had drops. They they had a couple drops. They had drops on. No, we got a one and a one. We got to put up 44 points and then we got yesterday. Okay, let’s see. Now we seeing what it looks like when it’s explosive. Now we seeing when it So, let’s see what it looks like after. We can’t just like, oh, I know it ain’t going to work. Well, they just scored 44 points with them doing it last week. So, defense and then they no points against the best defense. Yeah. So, let’s see. Let’s just see what happens. Yeah. I don’t know. But you don’t like it either, right? I I I’m with you on that because it’s tough as a head coach. It’s so tough to be in tune with everything while you still have to call plays. And that’s why it’s hit or miss. I mean, play calling is an art. You always have to be one step ahead. And when the defense is out there, you have to go sit with the offense on the sideline and make sure you’re going over, hey, Jared, this what we’re going to run next series. I like these for our first three. When we get the first third down and short, we’re going to run this third and medium this. If we get the fourth down, we’re going to go two plays. These are the two that I like. You have to do that instead of being engaged with the defense. Now, I’m not saying that he has to be engaged with the defense. Like what does he do? I like Shepard. Well, sometimes you got to challenge a play. You got to be able to know, hey, are we, you know, what the situation is? Are we playing to to you want to be aggressive here? They was stopping it, too. Push all night. The defense was just fine. Half of the league do what he do. So, I don’t see how it’s such a big deal cuz he do it and half the league do it. Everybody do it. So, it it can’t be that hard. But he’s never done it. Yeah. Right. Everybody’s never done it. Two games into him doing it. Let’s give him some time before we say, “Oh, disagree with that. I’m just saying to Skip’s point, they’ve had a lot of success of him not doing it. Now you make the change and it wasn’t like the offense was terrible under Johnny Morton. I didn’t think they were. Well, they scored 50 against the Bears 52 in that game and and he’s the head coach. He’s got his eyes on everything. He’s on you said they were having success. Yeah. There has to be a reason why he did this. Agreed. And I want So like I don’t care what it looked like from the outside. He did that for a reason. So I don’t know if Jared Golf said straight games are averaging 21 points. That’s what I’m saying. I don’t know if Jared Golf said, “Hey, this ain’t it.” I don’t know if Alma Ros said this ain’t it. Maybe the higher I don’t know. But there’s a reason he did that. That was my biggest thing is why I just didn’t understand why he did it. Because they averaged 21 points, three games straight, and they lost two of them. And it’s like, [ __ ] this NFC North is tough. We just averaged 21 points for three games straight, bro. Do we need a change, JG? Yeah. I mean, [ __ ] You like explo all these weapons. We average 21 points three straight weeks. You might make the change, too, if you the head coach, right? You like all this explosion, right? With all these weapons. We can’t average 21 points for three weeks straight and lose two of them games, right? What you going to do if you’re the head coach? I don’t know, man. I just I think look at it. I I Yeah, but to your point, like 21’s not terrible. It’s not like we’re putting up, you know, 13 and ain’t careful if you if you if you win them, but if you lose the games, it’s it’s like that’s an if right there. That’s just saying, okay, well, since we put up 20 I mean, it could be the defense. It could be other factors going on. It It’s not an if because you lost them. We It’s 21 points and we lost two out of the last You’re saying that’s all on the offense or the play caller even. If we got all these weapons, you tell me. You like the explosion. Don’t you can’t I don’t think it was I don’t think it was all on Look, at the end of the day, Dan Campbell knows what the hell he’s doing. He’s built a winning culture. He can do whatever he wants. I’m going to believe in that. I’m just I’m with Skip a little bit. I I didn’t know why that decision was made or if it was the best decision to make, but I guess time will tell. Maybe JG’s saying somewhere as we speak. Uh well, I I kind of missed uh Johnny, right? No, he kind of missed it. He kind of missed that 72° weather in that dome. That’s what he or he just faced what you just said was the best defense in all of like come on. That’s what 37 great defense. 37 mph winds. Yeah. is or or he might miss a guy that’s in Chicago right now and he’s got a team off to a seven and three start. Of course he miss you miss him.
