Who Should Be Celtics 5th Starter? | Garden Report
What’s up everyone? This is Noah Alzel and I’m here with Bobby Manning after the Celtics 13591 win over the Memphis Grizzlies which improves them to six to six and seven on the season. Um, and this is Jordan Walsh’s first start of the year and his first like really meaningful start. I think he started some when they were resting everybody two previously. Yeah, tonight was his first start of like we have the whole roster available and we pick you Jordan. Um, and it obviously snaps at Josh Min starting streak where he was relatively effective and the team seemed like they had found their footing there. Um, and I don’t know if this change is here to stay or not, but what were your initial reactions to Jordan kind of taking Josh’s spot in the lineup? And do you think that it makes sense to kind of keep it that way? I feel like you could see it coming yesterday after my not got cut off at 8 minutes and Walsh started the second half. That decision almost got made there. it felt like and Walsh’s effectiveness continued against Maxi and a variety of defensive assignments for him that have just gone exceptional and he’s providing the length and rebounding that May not has as well with a little bit more shooting pedigree and if that’s going to continue I think there’s definitely a chance that he could hold the spot down but my concern coming out of that game if it was going to happen tonight that they made that switch is that Minot would get lost and I felt like we saw that that night. There just wasn’t much until late from Min’s performance here. Walsh was good, right? Couple fouls, but overall did his job, provided some defensive energy. That worked. The May not off the bench thing did not. Yeah. I mean, I I don’t know if it’s Minot off the bench or Minot who clearly struggled the most recent game and seemed like he was he came in immediately fouled. Like he looked like he was a little bit uptight. So, would he have not fouled if it was the first play of the game? I don’t know. You know, I think that it’s hard to isolate just off of this one game. Certainly found a little bit of a footing later in the half. Hit a three, had a nice alleyoop, like made some nice plays that were kind of back to his like energy, you know, plug that he’s kind of been for this team throughout the first couple weeks here of the season. Um, so I don’t personally have a strong inclination of like picking one guy over the other. Um, tonight and the last week, Jordan’s played better, but earlier in the season, Josh looked like he was already kind of running with that one. And so we did a hit on my not like he changed the world a week or two ago and that’s how I think it might have literally been a week ago. That’s how this year’s gone after the Wizards game. So I’m not going to live in the moment here. I I I would like to see Minot regain that spot, continue to do what he did that made them successful. They won five of eight after he became a starter before that loss against Philadelphia. and sh up the rebounding, provide the defensive layer next to Kada, the room protection layer that I talked about. Like that hit we did a week ago, I still believe in all those things with him. The shooting was just always going to be the question there. Maybe some fouling, too, that that got him into trouble. I feel like the biggest reason he got cut off in that Philly game yesterday was he reached three fouls before halftime. So, normally that’s going to land you on the bench. It just landed him on the bench for the length of that game with what Walsh did. So, I don’t know that that’s why he got benched. I would love to know the behind the scenes of like what’s what was about because because Jordan fouled three times in the first half today. I don’t think Joe really cared. Like I don’t think that it’s necessarily that, you know, was it that he didn’t give a 100% effort on those plays and it was kind of lazy fouls? I don’t know. Um but what I will say is that Joe is that starting lineup spot is right now dangling over these guys of if you are the hardest playing of the of the three or four guys that are eligible for that spot, you have a real shot to get that. And if you’re not and you take it for granted for two days, you’re out of there. Which is not the like Jason Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum, these guys have games where they’re low energy. They have games where they’re not they’re best. But it’s there are they are who are and what does Joe say with these guys? It’s always energy and effort. We asked after the game why he started Walsh and he said it’s the energy and effort and that’s what allowed him to be effective and that’s what he would use to praise Minot when he was at his best there. So who would you like to see ultimately hold down this spot? obviously doesn’t feel like anyone’s going to do that necessarily this year, but for the near to immediate future here, would you like to see Walsh or would you like to see someone else in that spot? I think, you know, right now Walsh has his one game. I thought he played well and he’s defended really well now for three or four games in a row. Um, give him a couple more, you know, see if he can hold this effort because it’s been one good week for him. So, is that does that mean that he can provide that effort every single night? That’s the point, right? It’s everybody can play hard for three games. Ugo had a great spurt earlier this season. And each of these guys has shown moments where it’s like that’s the hardest playing player, that’s the best defender that we have for the tough assignments. Um, and so I would say that like give them a couple, you know, give him a couple games here and if the effort falters at all or you feel like you’re seeing stuff from Josh in his minutes or at practice, like you can go back to him. If you’re seeing Sam catch a rhythm there here and you want more shooting in the starting lineup, like I don’t think anything needs to necessarily be ruled out. Those are the two guys that right now seem to make the most sense for that fifth starter spot. I would like to see Jordan keep getting some opportunities here before they they say like that’s st over. Any case for Simons alongside Derek and Peyton. Um it’s an interesting lineup, but I think right now like rebounding has still been I I don’t want to take the rebounding issue and say it’s thrown out the window like thatus n Yeah. And I think that they do need somebody that can help on the boards alongside Kada. And both of those guys have been very impressive on the glass. and in particular Jordan this past week I’ve been I don’t know how how well his numbers stack up but as far as like what I’m seeing as far as his box outs his activity there superb. So I want one of those guys I think for now until the rebounding thing is is clear. Yeah and the defense has been shed up by having a four in there. Um those guys have provided the rebounding, the defense, uh the pace and energy and just enough shooting. And I feel like that’s going to be a swing factor a lot of the time here because sometimes shooting does affect energy and when that starts to tail down, how can they defend their spots in other ways? That’s going to be the big question with those guys. So, we’ll see how it plays out. The next game Sunday, we’re brought to you by Prize Picks. Head over there. Minott is tired over used rest him for a week and he get his legs energy back
Rotate both of them.
Easy Solution: PUT PAYTON PRITCHARD ON THE BENCH, AND START BOTH OF THEM!
Whatever he does, I hope he keeps going deep into the bench. The more players that are played the better. That’s the one constant. You want them to play fast? Reduce their minutes and keep the rotations going so that they can catch their breath
Match the rotations with players that complement each other. Garza doesn’t rebound, play him with Minott. Simons isn’t the best defender, pair him with D. White. JB does well with people who are going to run down the court with him, pair him with Pritchard, Walsh, Hugo and even Boucher sometimes.
Make it tough for opponents to keep up with the energy and plan for the rotations but always put out players that complement each other. Utilize JB, D. White and Queta as the guys that can pretty much play with any lineup, which will also be needed.
Josh should start
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Last year we had too many starters, now too few.
Was I the only one that thought Josh’s intensity wasn’t there in this last game? I’m hoping he was just tired or in his own head but if he is in his own head that easily I don’t know if that’s a good thing. But that is speculation. Just curious if anyone else noticed his effort levels.
If He is in his head. I hope he figures it out. He can not afford to shut down over one or two bad performances. He is just as young as the rest of these guys.. he is going to experience growing pains. don’t know if it’s a good thing for him to be that in his head m, if that is the reason
36:05 I think that would have potentially sealed the game. That was one of the weirdest things I’ve seen ref just not getting out of the way at all.
Why force anything yet if the answer hasnt already made itself clear. Its still pretty damn early in the season. I say let Joe keep experimenting until an answer makes itself clear. Hauser is always there if we need him and in the meantime i trust Walsh , Minott, and Gonzalez and i wont be upset about any of them getting a start rn while we are still figuring things out. Wouldnt even be opposed to letting simons try to get a start in front of pritchard here and there. I kinda miss the excitement of seeing Pritchard come off the bench. There was something more exciting about it for some reason
If mela starts knocking down 3s watch out. It looks way more confident in a shot. Looks good this year.
49:03 i’m not sure how confident I am in Joneses ability to play make yet. Maybe I missed a couple things this year, but he hasn’t shown to be a great playmaker in my opinion.
54:51 Aiden durkek reminds me of Christian braun on the nuggets
Mathew shut up dude that’s a lot of comments you need a friend !
Josh Minott and Hugo Gonzalez are such a bright spot for me this season. I just hope Joe keeps giving them extended minutes. I like that Walsh is doing well, but I’ve never felt much connection to him. There’s just something so magnetic about Minott and Gonzalez. That said, between Walsh and Minott in the starting spot, I say why not Minott? Ha. But in all seriousness, I’m here for the development of all the rotational pieces and the deep bench.
