  1. Very basic stuff from this article:

    1) players returning from IL

    2) find good free agency deals

    3) let guys from the bullpen start

    4) find serviceable pitchers to bring up from the farm

  2. Here’s your answer if you think the Padres may convert Miller and/or Morejon to the rotation. “What we want to make sure, is that we don’t look up and have two mediocre units,” president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said of the rotation and bullpen.

  3. We have Nick Pivetta and Randy Vasquez currently as our rotation guys. Options for our future rotation are:

    1. Expect rebound from injury and Niebla-led improvement from Joe Musgrove, Jhony Brito, JP Sears, and Matt Waldron

    2. Turn RPs into SPs from a combo of Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, David Morgan, Kyle Hart, and Bryan Hoeing

    3. Sign ready-to-go FAs like Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, or Merrill Kelly

    4. Sign under-the-radar or damaged goods pitchers like Cody Ponce, Dustin May, Cal Quantrill, or Tony Gonsolin

    5. Fast track in-house options like Jackson Wolf, Jagger Haynes, Omar Cruz, and Victor Lizarraga

I’m sure we will do a combination of the above, with Pivetta, Vasquez, Musgrove as obvious starters, but only one guy from option 2, and at least 2 guys from option 4. We may be able to sign a decent starter that’s ready to go, but I would think the Padres lean on Niebla doing his thing with reclamation projects and spend real money on hitters.
