Nate Danielson scores his FIRST NHL goal in Detroit Red Wings win over the Seattle Kraken

Today on lockdown Red Wings, Nate Danielson’s first NHL goal helps the Red Wings elevate past the Seattle Kraken 4 to2. You’re locked on Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Welcome back to the Lockdown Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fischer and Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day and wherever you get your podcasts. Scotty, the Detroit Red Wings won again. They are now riding a 4game point streak. Uh, and they are first place in the Atlantic at the quarter mark of the season, which again is another one of those benchmarks in the season. Again, none of it really matters until the final game is played because teams fall in and fall out all year long. But at the quarter point of the season, which is often considered a benchmark there, first place in the Atlantic, 25 points, and Nate Danielson’s first NHL goal should have been two, uh was has to be the main storyline from this hockey game, right? Yeah. I honestly I I think you could even zoom out a little bit and not even just talk about the goal. I mean, the goal was great, obviously. Fantastic, awesome, you know, we don’t really care how it happens. We’ll we’ll take it right off the skate, whatever the heck. Um, like we’ll we’ll take it however we can get them. But I think you can even zoom out and make a genuine argument that I I was stuck. He has they were talking about in the post game, too. He he only had like 11 and a half minutes of ice time. It felt like he had 45 minutes. Like he was he was everywhere when he was on the ice, man. And I think that yes, the goal should be celebrated and yes, that’s obviously a really big milestone and whatnot. Um but I I think you can zoom out and say in less than 12 minutes of ice time, I I really thought he was one of the most effective Red Wings on the ice, if not one of the most effective players, period. on the ice in this game. Uh he had one clear attempt that uh Mickey Redmond pointed out that like he he didn’t get clear the puck very well and whatnot, but outside of that, he he played dang near a flawless hockey game. Uh the assist to Finny was an absolute beauty. Um that’s going into a corner, winning a puck, and then, you know, going around the back and and finding Finny out front. Like that’s obviously incredible. He had a goal called back that was millimeters off sides uh and and was called back or else he would have had a three-point period. Like I I I really think this is this is I don’t want to say like the coming out party because it’s like we we know how talented he can be, but this was certainly the first game that you kind of turned your head and you were like, “Wow, like this kid was probably one of the better players on the ice tonight, even in limited ice time.” Yeah. Yeah, to add to that, right, what we saw with the eye test is backed up based on the hockey stat card that pulls uh the game score from Dom Lucision with the data from Natural Statrick and it compiles them into, you know, those fun little bar graphs you see on social media. Nate Danielson had the be second best game score on the Detroit Red Wings in this game. Uh two and a half points positive for the game score, which is the second best on uh on the team. And then he is the fourth best skater as of right now. Recording is at 10:22. So the West Coast games haven’t finished, but he was the fourth best skater so far throughout the night across the league because of those offensive and defensive zone impacts. And yeah, I mean I I don’t want to like brush off the the goal he scored either because obviously it was a deflection. and it went off as lag it in. But like that is how guys like he are going to score goals and he’ll get his he had a beautiful goal that called back like you mentioned. But even outside of that, right, um going to the net and trying to get in front of the eyes of the goalie and trying to push a defenseman out from in front, that’s how you score dirty goals. So while it wasn’t the pretty sexy goal that a lot of guys want for their first NHL goals, he was rewarded by going to the dirty areas. And that is something that this team needs a lot more of is going to the dirty areas. ASP took the shot and it got double deflection because players went and got in front of the eyes of Dard and he was rewarded. So it was a even though it wasn’t the sexy first NHL goal, I really liked how that came. Uh I’m sure he’ll say I’m sure he’ll say that he’s he loves it too and he might think to himself, man, it I wish it was the second goal. Uh but he had a great night. And then honestly even more impressive was the feed he gave to EMTT Finny for his first NHL assist on the power play which ultimately became the game-winning goal where Andrew Cop was battling along the boards. Battling along the boards. Props to Andrew Cop for that. Uh to win the puck to Nate Danielson who just found EMTT Finny sitting out front in the low slot for a high danger over the shoulder snipe. But that vision and that patience by Nate Danielson was great too. He’s he was fantastic in this hockey game. Yeah, I I again I I really think that he was kind of inarguably the biggest storyline from this game, right? We’re talking about the the biggest not even like takeaways or performances, just the biggest story from this hockey game. I I don’t know how it’s not Nate Danielson kind of again splashing onto the scene, if you will. Yeah. I mean, when you look at expected goals against in this hockey game, he was.3, which was fourth fewest on the team. Granted, however, that is still an accum accumulative stat and if you’re on the ice less than your teammates, then you’re going to have, you know, less expected goals against, but still of note. He had an expected goals percentage that expected goal share which was 56% as well. So, he had an overall really solid game. Um, as did the rest of the 2023 draft picks, right? Like if you zoom out and you want to talk about storylines, Nate Danielson obviously the headliner because of the fact that he was the guy who got his first NHL goal and that’s super exciting. But Axel Sand Pelica got the secondary assist on Nate’s goal. EMTT Finny scored the eventual game winner breaking a drought. All 2023 draft picks. You had your ninth, your 17th, and your seventh round pick. All contributing on the stat sheet. And you know, outside of the fun little gimmick that, oh, four points came from 2023 picks. Four points came from rookies. That’s the youth. You know, Lucas Raymond scored your other goal and yeah, while he is technically, you know, what in his fifth year in the NHL, he’s still a young player, right? The young players really drove the win in this one. And that is something that if this team wants to take the step forward, that’s what they need. Yeah. ASP was third on the team in time on ice, I think. Third, third or fourth maybe by the end of it. Um he didn’t play a lot in the third period, but they’re talking about it between intermissions. Like through two periods, he had one of the highest time on ices on the entire Red Wings roster. Like he was really heavily leaned on in those first two periods and then they kind of, you know, let the Right. Well, with the with the lead and you want to sustain that and whatnot, you put Cider and Edmonson out there and uh and hold on to to the lead. But yeah, like he he was used a lot. He was used a ton on the power play, which was really cool to see. Um I I think you’re 100% right. And then obviously you mentioned, you know, Finny with the goal obviously from Danielson. Like this really was a game where the the three young players that you had make the roster out of camp, and Danielson obviously didn’t, but would have had he not been injured. like all three of those guys ended up being three of the biggest contributors on the night and I think that that that is aside from just like the fan in you that just like tears up and is like wow that’s so beautiful like that’s also really important for this hockey team we’ve talked about depth scoring depth scoring anyone producing points outside of the top line of um the top line plus like the brinket I I guess right like you’re looking for for anybody else to to kind of join in and for those the the usual suspects to not be the guys that are bearing the puck in the back of the net. I guess Raymond had a goal, but like for for the the youth to be so heavily relied on and leaned on and for them to produce in that situation is a massive deal for sure. Yeah. Yeah, and I mean Axel Sandine Pelica obviously is now your power play quarterback one. The Red Wings only had two power plays in this game and he played 3 minutes and 6 seconds on the power play quarterbacking that. So obviously that’s where a lot of his minutes come in in the hockey game for sure. Um yeah, but that’s a I mean heck that’s he played over 75% of uh of the the total power play time that the Wings had as a team. He was the quarterback for all over three quarters of it. So, well, and you have to remember that first power play didn’t even make it the full 2 minutes. So, of the actual time they spent on the power play, it was over 75%. And he looked overall, I’ve been pretty impressed with how he’s looked at the first on on the power play quarterback. And I think with Eminny, Axel, Sandy, and Pelica, that’s how you want to use him early on is his defensive game. While it’s improving, I will say I have seen it get better these last couple weeks here, it’s still kind of not up to snuff to playing in the difficult deployments that they need him to if he’s going to be a top four defenseman. So, they’re using him a little bit slightly more sheltered. Uh like you said, they’re not using him late in games when they’re trying to lock down the lead. I think he had one shift in like the last 5 minutes. Uh as Sherro, Edmonson, and Cider really were leaned upon for that. But he’s giving a lot of power play time in return because that’s who he is. That’s who they drafted him to be. that’s who they thought he was when they drafted him is he’s going to be an offense first defenseman and he might not be perfect defensively. You hope you can grow that side of the game, but if you can provide offense, then you can you have your own gosh to spare, you know, that you’re growing in house. So, he he is an offense first defenseman that is really starting to get comfortable at the NHL level. Uh couple of assists in the last few games. Scotty, we got to get to a break. Uh when we return, we’ll transition to talk about other notable performers, other things that stood out to us from this hockey game. So stay tuned to Lockdown Red Wings. So, Scotty, I I do want to take a second to just say I know my camera has been choppy these last week, maybe two weeks, as in like it it just kind of freezes here and there. I’m working on it. I have no idea why it’s doing this. It kind of happened when I moved into this new space. It’s the same camera hooked up to the same computer. I checked my drivers. They’re all up to date. I don’t know why it the it freezes randomly throughout the episode, but we’ve gotten some comments here and there about it. uh mostly commending you at being able to keep a straight face as I just freeze frame on weird faces. Um but I wanted to just bring that up. I’m aware and I appreciate you guys, you know, giving me a heads up. I I’m trying to figure it out, but you know, I might just need a new webcam. I just I I have to keep a straight face looking at your face always. So, it’s really just no different than a normal conversation with I mean, otherwise you’d just be smiling the whole time because you’re right, dude. You’re telling it’d be a problem. It’d be a problem. Scotty, notable performance from the hockey game. Obviously, we talked so much about the youth in this game. Um, but that’s not the only storyline from this game and which was a a I thought a solid 4-2 win over the Kraken. Yeah, man. 100%. And I I’ll tell you what, I I’m glad that he get got rewarded with the empty net goal at the end because I legitimately think that up until that point, Dylan Larkin had one of the best zero point performances I have seen in quite some time. He was literally everywhere on the ice the entire hockey game. And like I said, I’m so glad that we’re not talking about it as a true zero point performance. He does get the empty net goal at the end of the hockey game. Um, but for 59 and a half minutes, I I truly was prepared to like come on here and be like, that might be the best zero point performance I’ve ever seen. Like he was he was everywhere, man. I I was unbelievably impressed with I impressed not in like a shocking oh my goodness like Dylan Lin’s great he he’s an amazing hockey player and it’s uh this is you know par for the course but I I just don’t want people to look at the box score and be like oh like Larkin had a fine game whenever he got the empty net at the end like no he was he he was I mean probably the best player on the ice for either team and just points weren’t the way that he was contributing in this one. I mean Dylan Larkin’s line right Larkin and the Brinket when all three of them are on the ice at the same time they give up one shot against in this hockey game at five on five I think Larkin himself because you obviously you get you you get on on the ice on the fly and you don’t always get on at the same time four shots against in the entire game with him on the ice and on one hand you go okay well that’s your best line you would hope they dominate but you’re also going up against the other team’s best line night in and night out and you know I I do want I agree with you, but also kind of want to zoom that out, too. Kind of like we did with the Danielson conversation. I think that the team as a whole has been playing a lot more responsibly defensively. I should should I say forwards in the defensive zone have been playing a lot more responsibly lately. You know, I feel as if, and correct me if I’m wrong in the comments or you can correct me, Scotty. I feel alone that the the structure in the defensive zone was just clog the middle as much as possible to just and block as many shots to negate shot attempts. I feel as if with Mlen the goal is to push them to the outside and close them off along the board to win the puck battle and come away with it. And I feel for the most part, especially that top and fourth line, they are doing an exceptional job at doing that. the top line in this hockey game in particular. I mean, there are so many opportunities and a lot of it has to do with also, you know, Moritz Cider being on the ice because Morett Cider I saw multiple times in this game he drives the guy he’s chasing down to the boards and that player tries to reverse on him and he just pushes him against the boards, frees it up for Dylan Larkin who’s there to make the play because that’s the structure that they’re playing. But Dylan Larkin and the the defense from the forwards were has been incredible overall. I mean, you want to call one moment out, Mickey Redmond called it out on the broadcast. You know, that first goal of the game, the one that Lucas Raymond scored early in the second to tie the game does not happen without one. Alex Debrink again hauling ass to negate a twoon-one. And like if that he doesn’t, they might get scored on if he doesn’t come back and force the puck carrier to make a play. And then that puck gets to the corner and Dylan Larkin under pressure makes a just a beautiful, you know, little hook pass behind the back up to Cider who feeds the Brinket up in the neutral zone. So the to score goals and to gain more offense, you’re forced to have to play defense. Like it’s just it’s non-negotiable. You can’t sit out in the neutral zone or hover at the blue line and leave your defense to play against five players and expect to score a lot of goals. The defense, the Fords have to be involved defensively. And I think that’s one of the things that has been showing so much these last few games is their their um willingness is the word I’m looking for to engage in those board battles defensively. Now, they’re not perfect. One issue I have is when they go to pressure the puck carrier at the point. A lot of the times that puck will get to the point, it’s so close to getting out and they’ll kind of just wave their stick at the puck carrier and the puck carrier will just go around him to keep it in. like they got to get better at taking the body out of the zone. Again, saw Morett Cider do that. You see Beneers try to make a move around him at the blue line and Mor Cider just like basically went like this, arms out and pushed him out into the neutral zone. Um and then preventing zone exits from the offensive zone. I think they still struggle with too uh in transition against they they sometimes struggle, but denying zone entries and the defense from the forge I think they’ve gotten a lot better at for sure. Sure. And I I also want to give credit, man. There was a sequence in the second period. I think there was maybe six or seven minutes left in the second where the Wings, it was even strength. I almost started crying. The Wings at even strength kept the puck in the offensive zone and cycled and missed a shot and went and got it. And everybody was doing their job at cycling through and keeping the puck in the offensive zone for like over two minutes straight. like legitimately and they didn’t score. So like you know to however but it resulted in a frozen puck which resulted in then a face off in the offensive zone which is another great opportunity to score it and then you can get some fresh bodies out there after. Like this was that moment that that moment was just I I’m not sure when the last time I’ve seen a Red Wings team consistently able to do that. Like that’s just so not and and it goes back to, you know, the the active sticks and and applying, you know, an aggressive forch check and and doing your job on those plays and, you know, rushing the puck carrier. Like all of those things we talk about that they haven’t done or that they didn’t do rather in the Lone era is now just night and day different under Mlen. and and that that second half of the second period it was very apparent like they were relatively the two teams were relatively even in shots still. Um but I mean watching the game man like you you saw the Wings just had every opportunity for those last six or seven minutes of the second period. Yeah and that was I’m glad you brought that up because I do have that written down on my notes too. That was the first and second line. and I had it written down that just had like you said 2 minutes of constant pressure where they eventually wore down the Kraken to the point where they were winning every single race of the puck and were able to get a full line change in and maintain pressure and I think it’s a miracle the Kraken got away with that without giving up a goal or taking a penalty cuz those are the moments you get desperate and you just act you get lazy with the stick and you end up tripping somebody. They literally just threw a stick out there. It hit a little bit of rubber and and you know it barely crossed the blue line and that ends it. But like again, I mean, they they they were able to to freeze they were able to get the puck then back into the offensive zone immediately after and and you know, freeze the puck and whatnot. Like it it it that is that is a guess where it’s nearly impossible to score from. Okay. So like you’re not going to give up goals when you’re in the offensive zone and b that’s where you’re going to score your goals. So, like the the fact that for so long the Wings just had no interest in being an aggressive team in the offensive zone and then now to see that kind of completely switch is really uh really beautiful. I’m sure they had interest. I just don’t know if it was uh working for them the way they wanted it. Well, I mean I’m sure yes offensive zone. I I I just meant like the you know we we saw the dump and chase era and we saw the like low event hockey era and like whatever. You know what I mean? Like it’s Yes. I know what you mean. I was just there’s a there’s a a focal point of being aggressive and trying to go after the puck while in the offensive zone. Right. Right. I know. I was just giving you crap. That’s all. I knew what you meant. Scotty, let’s head to another break. When we return, I want to talk a little bit more about the second line because we saw a shift about halfway through the game in how that second line looks. So stay tuned to segment two of segment three rather of Lockdown Red Wings. And then going into the second period, we saw EMTT Finny and Marco Casper swap places between the second and third line. And that was an idea that I had had to myself, didn’t express it. So, of course, you know, Brian had a great idea, then didn’t say it, and then it happens, and now he’s trying to claim the idea as his own. How convenient. How convenient. I had the idea to myself last game because Coner, Finny, and Kane just were not producing a lot of offense in the games that they had played together, they were getting honestly analytically caved in. And I thought to myself, you know, as high motor as EMTT Finny is, and as fast as EMTT Finny is, I think Marco Casper gives the second line a higher ceiling. I mean, he was the center of that line for a long time last season. He’s got the same kind of high motor, might not be as fast, but he’s got a little bit more skill and a little bit more scoring ability in my opinion than EMTT Finny does. So, why don’t you try him up on wing and see how that works? And in the second period, we saw that happen. And then the rest of the game, that second line was one of the most effective lines the Red Wings had at five on five. Uh when that line was out there together in the six just shy of seven minutes they had on the ice together because they only played the last 40 minutes as a line. Um they had seven seven shot attempts four and only two against and they expected goal share of 73%. And I when they had that big long sequence at the end of the second period it was Marco Casper on that wing a lot of times on the left side winning those races to the puck keeping the play alive in the offensive zone I think. And then of course you saw this immediate synergy between Danielson and Finny on the third line. Immediate. Yeah. Finny was with Danielson when that goal got he was the one who went off sides even though it was a ridiculous offsides call. I’m sorry. Tangent. I’m sorry if it takes you two minutes to decide if a player is offside or not and that player literally had zero impact on the play that preceded it or succeeded it. Yeah. Then you go with the call on the ice and that it was a good goal because Finny was maybe off by a hair. never got close to the puck in that sequence because it was all Danielson and Daniel Danielson scored a beautiful goal for what would have been his second of the night and second of his career in the same game. So, I would I’m a little upset about those offside reviews because they just feel at a certain point like you’re arguing semantics, but I also get you want to get the call right on every technicality aspect of it, but it just annoyed me. But anyways, back to what I was saying, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Uh the I thought that it made both lines better immediately. Yeah. And and obviously I agree. It’s hard to really come on here and disagree a ton after uh the performances like that. I it’s um yeah, I mean obviously there clearly appeared to be some synergy between the two of them which is nice to see. We saw the the beautiful goal. Obviously, it’ll be interesting to see how they manage that going forward. I’d imagine in in the immediate, it’ll look a lot similar to how it did in this game because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But, um, I I wonder if they have I mean, again, like Finny and and Danielson played a little over 11 minutes. Like, I I wonder if there’s even going to be a push to find a way to get them uh more ice time or maybe work them up the lineup. Then you obviously have to balance, you know, Casper and and then, you know, the veterans and whatnot. So, it’ll be interesting. But that’s a good problem to have, man. That’s a good problem to have. Absolutely. And I we mentioned Dylan Larkin having a great game. Did we even mention that the empty net goal was a 600th career point? Oh, no, we didn’t. Yeah, it’s literally on the show sheet. So obviously empty net goal kind of similar to Danielson’s first career goal in that like that’s probably not how you imagine it but he he throws it into the net from center ice to seal the win 4 to2. It’s his 600th career point which I believe gives him why I even say believe I’ll just pull it up that way I have it in front of me. Uh that gives him 254 career goals, 346 assists for 600 points in 753 career games. He Dylan Larkin’s a very very good player and he’s a number one center in the NHL. I mean, what more needs to be said about Dylan Larkin besides congratulations? Yeah, 100%. He’s uh he’s the man. They were doing I I mean they did the whole you know he’s the whatever it was 10th 11th red 11th I think red wing to uh to to achieve it. I forget where he ranked on on Michigan born players, but yeah, man. Just uh really really cool and hopefully the the team keeps trending in the right direction because it would just be an absolute blast to get, you know, a a talent like Larkin consistently or or deep into the postseason. Yes, Lucas Draymond multi-point game, fourth straight multi-point game as he continues to be on just an absolute tear points-wise. And then finally, I think the last thing I got on here, Scotty, is I just wanted to again give a shout out to team defense that last two minutes with the empty net. Kraken didn’t have any real shots at the net and scoring a goal. It was denying zone entries, shoting plays down along the boards, coring rebounds, and clearing the puck. And I mean, they had a lot of they had several offensive zone opportunities, too, where Andrew Copy, once again, he before I slander him, the fourth line played great. that that fourth line, Michael Rasmusen, Andrew Cop, James Van Remistake line is actually playing really well in their deployments. I think that that that fourth line works pretty well. It can even if it’s Bear or Stolam, who whomever on that line, Andrew Cop is playing really well in that role. But that guy is allergic to finding the net. He only hits the side of the net. I swear to God. And like it’s it’s I’m not too upset. I’m not upset about it. It’s just funny because you see him and he’s like looking for an angle. He’s looking for a lane to shoot that puck into the back into the net. And of course, again, he hits the side of the net and I just thought I just laughed. I thought it was funny. I I really like Andrew Cop’s game and he’s a great defensive center. I’m not leaning on him to score a ton of goals. Um but I think that’s like the fourth time this season where he’s had an empty net. He’s just hit the side of it. I just I I can’t help but laugh a little bit when I see he uh he has had trouble finding the back of the net certainly. Uh, so Scotty, do you have any final thoughts or anything you want to talk about from this one? I don’t think so, man. Just a great win and great to not have to, you know, it’s funny. I I say not have to rely on the the like topline, you know, Larkin got an empty neter and Raymond got a goal. So, it’s like still, you know, they’re they’re still really good at hockey, but um yeah, you want to be able to rely on your top line. You don’t want to rely on your top line for all the goals. And you didn’t have to do that today, right? For sure. For sure. For sure. All right, we’ll be back with a new episode tomorrow. We’ll have a great game preview for you as well. Stay tuned for that. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.

Nate Danielson collected his 1st NHL goal and assist in a nice win over the Kraken, and arguably should have had one more as well. Emmitt Finnie broke his drought as well and Dylan Larkin score his 600th career point with an ENG. The Detroit Red Wings sit atop the Atlantic Division. #LGRW

  1. These offsides reviews are dangerous and could result in some game changing b.s. down the road. The camera was not dead on straight down the line from what I could see, and the puck was in the air so there's no way to know for sure. If it's that close and you cant tell for sure based on video, the call on the ice should stand.

  2. Good team win. Not a particularly exciting game, but it’s nice to actually be able to win games like that. Kids are all getting more comfortable and looked great tonight. Also want to shout out cat. Starting last year his defensive game has really taken a big step. He hustles like crazy

  3. I’d like to see Berggren with Nate and Finnie. Just curious to see if that would work. I do like Appleton. We need one more centre so Compher, Copp and Raz can be the 4th line.

  4. Just as Dylan Larkin has come into his own as an all around great hockey player, both Mo & Lukas have martured as quiet leaders on this team. Great job guys.Ray L

  5. Speaking of “things I thought but didn’t put on record”. When Danielson had the puck and started the breakout, I said to myself, alone in my house for no one to hear… “man, that’s a guy who really needs to get one, been playing well”. And then boom, his perfectly placed ankle responded!

  6. I still think Stevie is looking for that 'Shanahan type' addition to the lineup. And with the team sailing in the right direction, there might be a player looking to make that move that would turn the Wings into a battleship.

  7. Nate went to the net like Datsyuk use to do, I would like to see Kasper get hot too and play with Bergs and put Appleton on the 4th line, I just think Bergs would do better with the two young kids on the 3rd line and they would have 3 play makers and have the talent to score also. None of them are just about themselves and I think they would be better together. I don’t see Appleton as a goal scorer at the moment unless he plays with Larkin and Raymond but not going to happen and Finnie getting a goal plus ASP was really good to see.

  8. I still think Kasper should be back on the 2nd line and give him a chance to play with Kane, Compher is not the better at all and Kasper is picking up his game, I see it but he ran into a Goalie who was not easy to score against.

  9. Can Larkin stop celebrating an empty net goal it’s Embarrassing. He is being pushed around so much and Raymond is not even a player that gets roughed up because he can get through small areas as Larkin can’t.
