Indianapolis Colts’ Jerome Henderson Talks Sauce Gardner, Mooney Ward Pairing

the the long-term vision, you have those two corners on either side. I mean, that looks pretty good. What kind of versatility does that does it give you when you got guys of that caliber? Yeah, it gives you, I think, the still the ability to match up if you choose to based on a matchup you like, but it also gives you the ability to just stay left and right and and say, “We’re going to not travel. We’re going to stay here.” And and so you I think it gives Lou a lot of flexibility as a play caller. You you were kind of in it with sauce. the week that of the trade. I mean, he went from watching Browns tape to Falcons tape in like a day. How remarkable was it that he was able to get ready to play and and make an impact like he did in that game? Yeah, you know, he’s such a a brighteyed person. If you’ve had a chance to visit with him, I mean, he’s very brighteyed. Um, he likes information. He talks a lot. He asks a lot of questions. Um, very inquisitive, very urgent in in everything he does. Um he brings a level of excitement to the room. Um he brings a level of excitement to the defense I think and how he plays and how he thinks and just how he communicates um with guys on the field. And you know at times you got to hey slow down a little bit just to all right let’s let’s come back a little bit. But um he’s he’s been phenomenal. As a coach like what’s the process of getting to know him in the season and getting to know how to coach him and how to teach him? Well, because of my um draft experience with him, because we were picking five the year he was picked. Um and so we and I did the the top corners that year because we were going to get a corner um at the the previous place I was. And um so I spent a lot of time with him um and and visiting with him and knew him and and you know was the guy that you know wanted a chance to work with, one of the guys. And um you know it’s funny how things come full circle. Um, somebody texted me the other day and said, “You finally get to work with Sauce.” I was like, “Yeah, been a long time coming.” Um, been excited about it. Um, and again, he brings a level of urgency in in things and and how he thinks about football and how he studies and how he prepares that I think just is going to help our defense. with Mooney, we don’t know his status just yet, but assuming he comes back this season, which is what Shane has said at some point, how have you seen him just manage this period because such a unique injury that he had and you know how much how badly he wants to be out there. Yeah. Um you know, and how bad we want him out there. Um you know, we’re a better team if he’s on the grass obviously. Um, and you know, he’s another one who is a a pro, very bright, a little more reserved, um, in how he does things, but like really locked in and detailed. And again, when he’s back in the defense, um, we’re hoping that’ll be this week. Um when he’s back in it again, we’re we’re a better defense.
