(Assume we have funds for just one of them.)

  1. I would like for money to not be an issue.

Also, doesn’t seem like these guys transition well very often

  2. We would be lucky but we all know they tend to go to big market teams LA, NY, Chicago, and Boston.

  3. They’re important to get not only for their actual baseball contribution but it’s important that we attract Japanese talent and show that they can excel here. I want to cut into that market and all that comes with it while we have Darvish. Also the padres dodgers rivalry being taken to Japan would be awesome

  4. Okamoto is expected to get 15m+ a year while Takahashi probably doesn’t get that in total. They aren’t close in perceived value.

  5. I don’t think Takahashi is regarded as anything special but Okamoto would be a nice get. Hard to say what his contract expectations are as an older player coming over but I think he’s got a good chance to be a solid hitter.

  6. It’s not even worth pondering this anymore. 2026 (and this current 2025 “hot stove” period) will look more like 2015ish than 2022ish in terms putting $$$ on the table for anyone. Hope you all enjoyed the last 3-5 years. Sadly, it is over.

  7. I’d say wait for Imai Tatsuya. Probably unlikely. Besides that Padres need to tap into the Mexican market as well. I know it’s probably not as lucrative as Japanese market, but the depth of talent in that country was on display in the 2023 WBC. You telling me you wouldn’t wanna see a Mexican Padres player on tequila ads in Cabo?

  8. I really hope the “Brain Fart Toxic Syndrome” that AJ Preller seems to be suffering from doesn’t use the “excuse” of available funds. We could really benefit with signing both but I truly think concentrating on Takahashi has to be a priority. But my gut tells me AJ hasn’t gotten the correct vaccine yet from suffering his yearly Brain Fart.
