What do Saints need to address during the bye week? | Ross Jackson joins the show.
[Music] Welcome back to New Orleans Football for another episode of New Orleans Football presented by PJ’s Coffee. It’s the bye-week. The Saints are now into their buy. We’re going to do a little bit of a check-in to see how we feel about the team with where they’re at. And we’re also going to talk a lot about Tyler Shuck on today’s show. There’s hope back in the building. And um that’s kind of interesting and it’s kind of cool and it’s kind of a decent place for the the Saints to be right now. After it felt like the season was kind of taking a bit of a downward turn, all of a sudden hope is restored back in the building. We are coming to you from the Ashner Andrews Institute podcast studio. And if you’re looking to buy a new car, make sure you get it from my guy Matt Bowers. There’s nobody else to buy your car from. You should be buying it from Bowowers if you’re buying a car. And if you want to celebrate your fandom beyond the field, Kesler Federal is proud to be the official credit union sponsor of the New Orleans Saints. They’re a notfor-profit organization, meaning their members always come first. you can enjoy better fees, lower rates, and everything else Saints fans need to help you get one step closer to living your dreams. That’s Keesler Federal. Our first topic today is presented by Rouse is the official supermarket of the New Orleans Saints. Um, it’s the by-week and kind of the the the the point that you want to make at this juncture of the season is kind of it’s a good place to look at where expectations are in if they’re being met or not met. And I think in the Saints case, it’s a really interesting exercise because I think a week ago, you would have felt like they weren’t being met and now all of a sudden you feel like they are being met. And I think that’s just kind of the difference of believing if you have an answer at quarterback or if you feel like things aren’t going the right direction. And all of a sudden, Tyler Shuck has put hope back into this whole entire organization and just about anything feels possible. And look, I’m not going to qualify it every time I say it. Like, we know the cart’s way ahead of the horse. The card is way ahead of the horse. The card’s beating the horse. The horse ain’t even off the line. It’s way ahead of the horse. We don’t know if Tyler Shuck’s going to be good or not. I mean, there’s these guys all over the place in the league. Played well one week, didn’t play the well the next week. It’s just kind of the way it is. But I think we all saw in that game that there is a possibility that he could be something. And if he’s something real, I mean, holy crap, man. Like, this thing is off and running. The rebuild’s going. The whole world looks and feels different. We’re having conversations then about what’s best to do for the team if if Shuck is the answer at quarterback and I think it changes your thought process on literally everything. Like do you resign Crystal? I think absolutely. Yeah. If Shucks’s the guy like all of a sudden that becomes a major priority. Do you resign Elante Taylor? Yeah, probably. So, do you try to go all in around it a little bit more? Yeah, probably. So, and if he’s not, maybe the answer is the opposite on all those things because now you got to find the quarterback and now you’re starting over from square one and you’re another year further away. Um, and it changes everything. I think it changes the outlook of everything. So, if you know now what it is at that position, you can find out by the end of the season. I mean, it’s it’s it’s a completely different look. And then then we’re looking at this draft class like it’s transformative. You got Kelvin Banks and Tyler Shuck and Yonas Sanker and Danny Stzman and Quincy Riley and Devin Neil. I mean, all those guys to varying degrees are are hits on this team. And now all of a sudden, this this draft class is possibly foundational. And it it’s just such a majorly different place to be and it changes the outlook. It possibly changes the outlook at everything. So, it’s interesting to kind of look at it and see where you’re at. And when you’re talking about small samples, you’re you’re overreacting to everything. And then I think at the end of it, you kind of see where everything shakes out and where it’s together. But, you know, I will say that I I’m I’m willing to believe I’m willing to to believe something could be possible here. And I I think it’s so exciting. Um I wish they were playing this week. I I just want to see how this story plays out because now you it would change your draft strategy. It would change literally everything about the organization if Tyler Shuck is a real player. And he has a shot. He played well. I watched it again. I went through the tape. I broke it down. I mean, there’s a couple plays. Um, you know, the the the third down before the field goal. I thought he could have hit a touchdown to a posture. The ball placement on the pass to Tason was a little bit back shoulder, you know, when he should have been on him. He’s a guy that you kind of just have to like make it so that he’s catching the ball. Um, but I thought it was good. I thought it was really good. I I I believe in at least for that game, I believed in what I was seeing live after the film review, but I have no idea what it’s going to look like going forward because the Falcons are going to study this guy. They’re going to see what he does. They’re going to make life a little bit harder. There’s two games of film on him now, two and a half games of film on them now. Um and and I think you have have to see how it how it plays out uh from there. But it it looked pretty good to me, man. Um I I’m a bit of a believer at this point. We’re going to see where it goes uh moving forward, but super interesting to see how it all plays out. Our next topic is presented by Shaw Bear Insurance, the Airheart Agency. And you know, I’m going to talk about this a little bit with Ross Jackson, but it’s just kind of the by-week check-in again. And and the thing that I just really want to see going forward, I want to see the offense really hone into itself. And I I hate where the buy is coming at right now, but it’s here. And I think a chance to step back. You got some success. You won a game. You feel good about the quarterback. The quarterback’s walking around believing in himself. Now you can step back and you can look at everything and you can see what it is and you can figure out what your best methods are going forward. put it all together, hit the ground, see what it is and and find out. And you know, now Kell Morg is going to get to plan for the quarterback and he has been playing for him the last two weeks. But he can take a week and tailor to the quarterback that he drafted, the quarterback that he wanted, the quarterback he made the 40th pick, the guy that he thought about and had a vision for and thought enough of them to draft him. Now he can take this week, tailor it around them. They can put it together and they can figure out what they’re going to be in the back half of the season. And I think it’s important. I think it’s really important they play well because it’s not just about Shuck. I think it’s also about Kell Moore. And I think Kell Moore getting some confidence and some momentum and and some stuff going that makes you feel good going into the offseason, going into next season. And I think I think that really is important. I think it’s I think it’s tremendously important for him to feel good about what he’s doing and know that he’s calling plays the right way and that he has an offensive system that’s working because I think barely to this point it’s been a little bit up and it’s been a little bit down and for him to put it all together and just hit the ground running with his quarterback I think it would be a huge thing for this team in the back half. So, that’s really what I’m looking for. Like some aggressive pass concepts that that work, but also marrying it with the stuff over the middle where Shuck really likes to attack the field. Uh the run game, I think, look better, but it can be way better. All that stuff. Get some play action going. Get just get a foundation together that you know this is what it is. These are all the things this team does well. And build around it in the offseason. And then next year, you’re in a much better position to go push the chips in a little bit more. um and see where you get. But I think the bye-week is coming at a good time. It sucks that it’s shutting down at the first time. There’s been like real hope, real excitement, real momentum in quite a while, but they’re going to come back on the other side of it. They’re going to play the Falcons, and we’re going to find out more. Be right back right after this. And uh it’s a it’s a quarterback place and we’re here to have a quarterback conversation. Um Tyler Shuck, I mean, exceeded probably every expectation that I think anybody in the world might have had for him in this game. So, I guess the question looms and it’s a super unfair question, but like where are you at on the the believer scale? Like, it’s tough to it’s tough to know. Like, we’ve seen a million guys come in, have one good game, not play good the next game. But like I’m drinking a little bit of the Kool-Aid, I think. Where are you at on it, man? Listen, I’m feeling the same way. Like, I I thought I needed to be I was trying to say stay right down the middle, wait and see how this goes. one game looked good and everything like that, but then I went back and I watched Nick and honestly it wasn’t the performance of the things that he did well that stood out to me. It was the lack of red flags when I went through his tape. Like there wasn’t a lot of stuff that made me concerned. Was there is there stuff to improve? Yeah, of course. Right. Like obviously ball placement not as consistent as you’d like. Anticipation in some situations not as great. there weren’t these big-time red flags of, you know, oh, he’s only reading half the field or he’s making bad decisions with the football, he’s not keeping, you know, he’s not protecting the football, things like that. Like, there weren’t a lot of those things. And so, that’s got me leaning a little bit more over on the believer scale, honestly, than the doubter scale right now. Even though I’m trying to say down the middle, the lack of bad things that we saw just from his me uh mechanism, his mechanics, all those other pieces, that all kind of has me leaning a little bit more believer after that performance against the Panthers. I certainly think he’s capable. Like we we saw enough to at least know that he’s capable of playing really well in an NFL game. And there’s a lot of guys that don’t even get to that point. Like Jay Kainer never got to that point. So, it’s not it’s not like it’s something that like, oh, anybody can go do that and then it could disapp [Music] he opened it up. He was aggressive. Those third downs like those plays shouldn’t have worked the way they were blocked and the way they were called and like nobody was open and then he extends and he finds somebody and he makes something happen out of nothing. And I think you got to have some of that to have a chance to be like a legitimate NFL starter. Now, could he go into the next game and you get some tape on him and people are picking off passes and you’re trying to rein in the aggressiveness and into the right ways and all that stuff? Absolutely. But I think as we sit here today, I definitely believe he has a real shot to possibly be good. And I don’t know, you know, I kind of felt some of that about Spencer, but I I definitely feel that that the ceiling’s possibly higher over here. And I’m at least encouraged and I’m at least intrigued to see where it goes from here. Like, yeah, I I’m I’d love to keep it down the middle, but like I’ll allow myself to be disappointed later by believing that there possibly could be something on the other side. Incredibly excited to see where it goes. And look, the other thing is too is like I feel like he kind of elevated everybody in a way like the the he throws a very catchable ball. Um the anticipation, like you said, some spots it could have been better, other spots it was perfect. Like the throw to a up the sideline, he waited like he didn’t wait for him to be open. He’s throwing that as soon as he sees a one-on-one shot. Hey, I’m going to put this up the sideline. Give my guy a shot at it. The throw to Chris on the back shoulder. Great anticipation there for the back shoulder throw. Put it only where his guy could get it. Obviously, Chris made an amazing catch on that throw, but it’s it’s a catchable ball. So, I’m I’m believing uh a little bit to to to this point. Uh continuing this conversation presented by Aaron Rose. What do you want to see over the next six, seven, eight, seven, how many games? Seven games. Seven games to to kind of, hey, we’re not looking at Mendoza. I’m not looking at Simpson. I’m not looking at anybody else. Like, what is it? What does that look like at that point? Yeah. I think it’s the the the the him becoming Chuck becoming more of a model of consistency. Not that he hasn’t been a model of consistency. He’s he started two games. And so now the next thing is just, okay, you saw some really good things against Carolina. I thought there were some good things that we saw against Los Angeles, too. There just weren’t a lot of plays for him to do anything with. And so, can he carry that through as, as you mentioned, defenses start to get tape on him, be able to learn a little bit more about him, anticipate him a little bit more, and how does he adjust? The other thing I’d like to see too, and maybe this isn’t all on Chuck, but I would like to see some of these big moments and these plays work in the structure of the play and not always having to be outside of the structure of the play. Let me see you orchestrate the offense the way that that it needs that it it’s intended to be orchestrated. And some of that is Kell Moore in terms of his play calling, play design, down distance, understanding, all those other things. It’s that’s not all on Tyler Shuck. If you want to make sure that this offense is going to be okay, at least going into 2026 with Tyler Shuck, you probably want to make sure that the offense and the scheme and system can work with him running it in structure as opposed to always having to get out of structure and then take advantage of the scramble drill after that. Yeah. One thing though, man, I was like so impressed by how good he looked in the pocket and just that continuing is kind of the biggest piece for me. I I like I’ve always kind of felt that was the thing that was going to define his success or failure was whether or not he was going to be able to be in there, be calm, make his plays, not panic, not get himself into bad spots. And he he just like he blew me away there in this game, but I’m with you. Yeah. I mean, like some of this stuff in stride in the moment designed down the field, not necessarily because yes, you found a guy on a scramble drill outside of it, although that’s a nice piece to have uh in the bag. No doubt about it. But yeah, it’s all that stuff. It’s the consistency and it’s all that. And one of the other things I want to see too is that hey, look, what happens if he goes into a game, first drive of the game, he throws a pick, like how does he respond to that? See some of that adversity and how he rolls on from there. That’s coming at some point. Just the way he plays the position. At some point, he’s going to try to do something too aggressively. He’s going to get picked off. The the Devon Bailey throw that everybody loves, he’s going to try it and somebody’s actually going to jump it. So, like, and those things are going to happen and those are the kind of picks that, you know, as we were talking about Rattler, those are the kind of picks that you’re okay with seeing. Like, you’re trying to make something happen and somebody takes the ball from you. Where do you fall on the uh the draft pick conversation? Like, you know where I’m going. You’re online. Like, like what if they win five more games or they end up picking eighth, ninth, 10th? Like, where do you fall on that? Like, what’s your what’s your personal take? Yeah, look, I I I think the the better that the team looks down the stretch, obviously, the greater potential for their draft pick to get worse. And if you’re an NFL organization, you’re okay with that. Uh you’re you’re perfectly okay with that. And I I think that’s got to be my thing. I I’m trying to look at that from the organizational perspective. You’re not trying to go in there with some of these veterans on your roster and players that you need to make sure are bought into 2026 saying, “Hey, we’re not trying to win games. We want better draft capital.” You know what I mean? You can’t do that. You’re trying to build and and and elevate these building blocks that you have on this roster right now so they’re ready to go for 2026, those that make it over through the off seasonason. And so I think you’ve got to go out there and compete. And I think you’ve got to go out there and like I said, the better that you get, the worse your draft position gets. But you’re already kind of in a pretty good position. Like you you’re going to go up against some of these teams that are going to be competing for the number one overall pick throughout the rest of the season. So you’re probably going to win more games one way or another. Uh but you also have a pretty good situation to where you can still land a top 10, top five, top seven, however it is you want to look at it, uh uh selection to where you can now build around the quarterback that you have. That’s with that’s filling in the assumption that if they’re winning games, the quarterback is playing well, right? So you’re getting away from the need for a quarterback. And so then you can focus premium draft capital at premium positions that build around your quarterback or that build the defense, all those other things. I I think we’re going to see or at least should see a lot of defensive turnover for the Saints personnel-wise going into next year. And so having maybe that number eight overall selection still gives you a chance to do that. Yeah, I think obviously like the the greatest outcome would be like the Drake May thing where you keep it at four wins, you feel great about your quarterback, you’re drafting high, you can go get the piece that helps the quarterback and then the next year off you go. But the thing is, yeah, if they if they win a bunch of games and they’re they got five wins and they’re picking ninth, you that’s a good problem. That’s something that you’re happy to have happen because that means that your quarterback is playing well and you actually have legitimate hope there. And that’s the only way to get there is if he’s actually playing at that level and he’s winning a couple games, maybe that at least before last week, we would have said, man, that they shouldn’t be able to beat the Falcons. They shouldn’t be able to beat, you know, whoever. Like, yeah, sure. Titans, Dolphins, uh, Jets, like those were always winnable games, but yeah, if you grab another one somewhere else or another two and that’s how it plays out. I think you’re happy with it and you you kind of deal with that as it goes. Those are problems that that put you ahead of the curve and not having to answer that quarterback piece. The way I would look at that is is is, hey, look, that means that you got a quarterback that was probably a top 10, top 15 player 25, 30 spots later than it should have been. again, we’re like I got the cart like way out ahead of the horse here because we have we have no idea what he’s actually gonna look like or if any of that stuff’s true. But theoretically speaking, if that were the case, like awesome problem to have. Very very happy to solve that. Um and nobody’s been more into like the draft and having a top pick than me, but I’d be willing to see them sacrifice that for the ability to actually have the quarterback cuz that solves everything. Listen to the the conversation we’re having. like it’s it’s hopeful for the first time in in weeks. Like that’s what the possibility does for your team. And if that becomes real, man, that they’d be in a in an absolutely um outstanding spot. Um what are you looking for coming out of the buy? Like outside of the quarterback, like what’s what’s the one thing that you want to see them that you liked or didn’t like and you want to see more of or or less of coming out of it? Yeah, I think looking at the way that Kellmore used the by-week last year. Obviously, very different situation with the Philadelphia Eagles, but completely changed the way that they played on offense, right? Refocused to the run game, refocused to Saquon Barkley and uh Jaylen Herz in the run game. Now, obviously, the Saints don’t have those players. I I am curious to see how he uses sort of the, you know, he offered up the self scouting tag uh this past week, and so how he uses that to make some of the adjustments in places where they’ve struggled. So, I’m mostly interested in can they score points in the red zone? You know, can they get to a point to where they’re not stalling out at the opposing 40 yard line? And I’m really intrigued on the offensive side if they can get the run game going. And so, those are going to be the three things that I’m kind of looking at to say, okay, did they use the self-scouting by week as an opportunity to improve some of the things that or adjust some of the things that they struggled with and were they successful with it? They might not be, but those are going to be three of the big things on offense that I’m watching. And then defensively, I just want to see the consistency. I feel like every other game we’re saying, “Wow, the defense performed really well.” And then right after that, oh, 222 rushing yards allowed, 171 rushing yards allowed, and all those other things. It’s just seeing like I feel like it’s been a piece on the defensive side where we’ve seen now that like when the execution is there, the scheme works, but can the execution be consistent? And so those are going to be kind of the four key things that I’ll be watching after the by-week. And if they make any level of strides, any level of strides in any of those four, I I’ll come out at the end of the season a little bit more positive around uh what the coaching staff has done with this team so far. Yeah, I I want to see how they kind of build on some of the stuff we saw in this game, too. They they had 19 runs from under center. They ran the ball well from those looks. They ran the ball well from those looks against Buffalo. Does that become a piece of it? Does the offense look a little bit different? Like Tyler Shuck played under center a lot at Louisville, was very comfortable there. Do they build on some of that and change up some of the looks where before it was kind of outside of the Buffalo game, all shotgun, all pistol all the time? And, you know, can can the run game build on what we saw in in this last matchup? I thought there were spots where it was good. I don’t think the stats necessarily came out to where you’re you’re raving about it or anything like that, but there were moments within it where it felt like it was maybe built a little bit better and they were kind of playing into their strengths a little bit more. So, yeah, all that stuff. And then defensive consistency, no doubt about it. Um I’d like to see some tighter coverage on defense. I don’t think that’s going to change though, but like I maybe I’m just like a old school press man guy in a in his own world. I don’t know. Hey man, I’m with you on that one. He He’s Ross Jackson. It is now time for the get Gordon question of the day presented by Gordon Mccernin. Injury attorneys Mike Armmitage asks, “How many more games like Sunday’s game at Carolina does Shuck need to have in your opinion before he earns the opportunity to show what he can do as a Saints starter over a full season in 2026?” I I still think this is going to be something that you just know or you you don’t. And I think it’s going to be obvious. Um, I don’t think you have to take one of these quarterbacks in this draft if you have someone that you feel like can give you a shot next year. And that doesn’t mean even a year from now you aren’t going back into it and looking at things again. But I like Mendoza. I like Tai Simpson. I think both those guys could be really good quarterbacks in the NFL. I don’t think that you are forced to take one if you feel okay about your position. And I don’t think either one of them guys, and it could change. Look, we’re we’re in November. There’s still couple games left in the season, then you got like the Big 10 in the SEC title games, then you got the playoff, like one of those guys could ascend to a point where you feel like, yes, absolutely. The guy I think right now today, it’s still kind of like, ah, I don’t know. We’re going to see. We We’ll see how it comes together. All that stuff. Um, but I think you’re just going to know. I think you’re just going to know. I mean, I think Shuck is going to either really make his case or it’s just going to be like nah. And if it’s nah, you can you can maybe go take one of them and I’m sorry for the sound effect, but it’s the best way to illustrate it. If you’re just kind of like, ah, like I think you could justify taking one, but if you have anything on the other side of that feeling, he’s you got your guy and you and you just try to build around him. So, I I think we’re going to know and I think we’re going to know relatively quickly. Um, we got to know relatively quickly there. There’s seven games left. So, I think that’s just kind of how it’s going to be. Um, I could be way off here. We could get to the end and be unsure, but I think if you’re unsure, then you can justify getting more sure. So, I think that’s just kind of where you are. If you’re either on that line or the other side of it, I think those are the two position points. And I think he’s going to make it obvious. And man, if he plays like he does against Carolina in most of these games, um, you got your answer. So, that’s going to do it for today’s show. We’ll be back later this week. [Music]

Love these Ross Jackson cross over episodes
Good show. 1 exception…I'm not resigning Alontae. I'm sorry. Kid can dress his ahh off. But could't cover if it was Karaoke night. PJ Williams/Corey White/Eli Apple 4.0
If Moore would have stuck with Rattler and we saw more of the same, then I would have wanted to lose out and get the top pick to trade back and stockpile more picks, draft a QB, etc. But now, I want to win out and see Shough shine, build around him and shoot for the stars in 2027.
These 2 are the best in the game 🎤⚜️
If shough stays healthy then in no world can I see him not being good especially with talent around him. He has the size, arm talent and most importantly the IQ to be a top 5-10 signal caller. ⚜️
Bucs Coach Todd Bowles and his blitz packages approve of the QB change the Saints made. Three points just doesn't challenge Baker Mayfield.
Seahawks vs Rams this weekend should determine who is the best in the NFC West. Saints fans know the Rams and the Seahawks all too well. A combined score of 78-23 against the Saints. Matthew Stafford is an absolute unit!!
Play calling is very predictable. Taysom Hill in at QB you know it's a run. Even Carolina's defense shut that down. That's on Kellen Moore. The Saints will never have a roster like the Eagles.
The Saints need a powerful running back like Jonathan Taylor who has 1,139 rushing yards and 15 TDs in 10 games.
Ty Simpson is most similar to Drew Brees
Tyler Shough has plenty of game experience from his years in college but coming from Louisville where they ran a pro style offense helps him tremendously. College teams need to implement a variation of pro style concepts within their offenses to help young QB’s be ready for the NFL
Resign Taylor for what? Getting beat at corner and a good blitzer? We gotta stop with these contacts. If he wants outside DB money he can walk
These Locked on saints and NOF cross over episodes 🔥
I know what I saw; a kid who deliberately worked on his weaknesses and overcame them in a big way for that one game at least. And he surprisingly looks at ease. Habits can be broken and made. This may be where a little more maturity( little more life experience ) may be big benefit for Shough , the organization and us fans.
Sure hope so! 😁 Excited to see…
If available, draft him!! Can always trade for maybe more picks the next season or, you have a starter if yours bombs
Yes!!! I agree with you and absolutely HOPE.
Regardless what my eyes saw from Tyler Shough was impressive and encouraging, I didn't feel like that during Spencer Rattler last year or this year or even Derek Carr time in NO.
I will take the 1st overall pick in the NFL draft but to trade it and get a haul to rebuild IF he's our guy.
Basically that one performance Tyler had is something none of us seen in Years and were hopeful and in denial for what we witnessed , so HOPE is a great world, Saints need players and our Defense played well and Tyler helped us win without denial.
PLEASE KEEP THESE CROSSOVERS
Let's go Patrick Queen, and Tyler Shough! I hope by the end of the season. We are saying Tyler's Saints, and Patrick's Pelicans. Way too early, but I am enjoying hope, it's been a long time since I had hope.
Another great show! Do you think D Neal will have a big game against Atlanta? ⚜️
there's one thing for sure . . . Mickey Loomis & Jeff Ireland are still totally inept and incompetent . . . . . . .
It’s so great to be excited to see the next game ain’t it
I still think Rattlers Patriots game was better and against a better team the difference is guys made plays for Tyler Shough and the defense wasn’t getting the ball thrown over there head every other play! I think Rattler would’ve had similar success against the bad teams the Saints are about play.
Nick fresh from the barber shop
The roster?
Playoffs baby! Only four games back!
