The decision to give him 4 years despite him both being bad and not actually in demand by any other teams was indefensible in the moment and has somehow only gotten worse over time.
No player better illustrates that the Leafs FO cares more about name brand and reputation than the ability to contribute to winning games.
Domi needs to be scratched in my opinion, I know a lot of people like him because of his name and how he will stand up for players but I have seen him turn the puck over so many times by blindly throwing the puck across the ice or making passes to nobody. He has some flashes of skill and effort for sure but overall I have been hating his play this season. Worst leaf besides Joshua.
And we’ll all float on, okay
And we’ll all float on, okay
And we’ll all float on, okay
And we’ll all float on
Ok, so you made a pass that got intercepted. At least you have body position on the back check. Oh wait… You fucking gave up on the play at the hash marks. God you suck, Domi.
So is Domi the new scapegoat then? I thought we were leaning towards Matthews.
This sub has such a hard on for hating Dubas that most believed Treliving was a much better negotiator than him. The Domi contract is aging like milk and it looks like choosing him over Bertuzzi was a mistake.
The fact he’s still forced to play center is big too. I never liked the Domi signing, but he’s manageable on the wing, with 0 responsibility/leaned on defensively. The guy is horrible defensively.
He’s like the worst mix of talent for a contending team. He’s offensively gifted enough where on a bad team with L1/2 minutes he gets points to elevate his value. But then he’s put on a contending teams roster as a L3 role, he’s horrible defensively where he’s not longer an NHLer.
I get why he’s a center right now with Roy and Matthews out, but he’s been center pretty much all yr. It’s ridiculous.
Dont think Domi needs to get scratched but he needs to be in the bottom 6 and be more pesky. I think he’s much more useful than Macelli.
I gave Macelli the benefit of the doubt cause he was new, but if the roles were reversed and Domi was new, Macelli would be treated like Domi is now.
Macelli looks like an AHLer with a ton of talent at the moment. Just does not look like he’s an NHLer.
Domi is also playing really poorly but you got to try and gjve him a role where he’s just hunting for the puck, mucking it up and being an agitator
Putting out a line with Domi, Robertson, and OEL was probably not the best decision
The giveaway is one thing but he gets back and just lets fantilli walk past him. Like somehow doesn’t even try to get between him and the net
Domi is just not a good player
I really tried to like Domi. He’s the son of a Leaf legend, bleeds blue, charitable with his time and active in the community, and by all accounts a swell fellow.
But, he’s just so very bad at hockey. He (over)passes, usually to no one in particular, or more often the wrong team. On the rare occasion he passes towards a teammate, it’s an shin-high wrist shot in the feet or out of reach. In the D-zone he stands around with one hand on the stick pretending to play goalie while everyone else skates circles around him, usually ending up with a goal against.
His -11 is by far the worst on the team, 4 worse than Myers, and that doesn’t even include the dumb selfish penalties that he burdens us with on an all too frequent basis.
He brings everyone down with him. Any O-zone pressure almost always dies on his stick. McMann and Robertson flourish when they aren’t saddled with him in the middle.
It baffles me that Berube doesn’t see what a liability he is. The amount of ice time he gets, even on the power play and with with some of our top players just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Such a shame. I’m convinced he has something down deep that could make him a decent 3rd or 4th line player, but has proven time and time again that he cannot reliably access it.
Max’s time with the Leafs needs to end, now.
At some point it’s not his fault anymore. At some point the coaching or management need to make a point that he cant be used in situations like these
As a Domi head every day is pain
Domi gets preferential treatment because Berube and his dad are good buds.
I don’t know what is worse. The play of Domi or the seemingly lack of options to replace Domi in the development system
Bad pass, then bad back checking. I mean the dude gives it 100 percent out there, but that doesn’t always mean he’s helpful
His dad cost the leafs a cup, why is anyone surprised? Lol
Domi should’ve been benched about 8 games ago. He cannot play the role they are trying to make him play.
The instant he made that pass I knew Columbus would score. And I was right!
It was a bad pass, but why did McCabe go to that area to receive it?
Show me a video where Domi successfully completes a pass. He passes more to the opposing team than his own. I like the guy but he’s really not very good at all.
Domi has underexamined and _good_ defensive stats when used in certain situations in certain systems.
His offensive/playmaking capabilities are excellent. We don’t need to go into them further here.
But he’s been an effective positive influence on play in a few specific times in his life based on coaching/deployment:
Montreal (under Julien)
Carolina (under Brind’Amour)
Dallas (under DeBoer)
Toronto, season 1 (under Keefe)
He has showed _sustained_ ability to drive play responsibly in this league, and yet he’s constantly used off-label by coaches like Tippett, Richardson, Larson, and, well, Berube.
Make of it what you will. But all players have situations where they play their best. It’s up to management and coaching to deploy these assets appropriately. Domi is a known. Constantly using him improperly is not on the player.
We can all pile on Max and it’s well deservedd, but this is really a Tre issue. Berube keeps putting him in a losing position, and we all can agree Chief probably knows it’s the lesser of two evils if they don’t play him there considering the way the team is built. Injuries, sure! but has Laughton really shown and shine? Reality is, Domi should be in a package if we can find a sucker to take him and that would boost my opinion of the fast talking car/pizza salesman that is Brad, where hockey IQ is non-existant.
Classic trying to do too much or force an amazing play.
5 v 5 throwing the puck to the net with a guy going for the rebound is fine play (execution wsd bad, needed way more pace on the puck). But in overtime possession is everything. This rush is dead, circle back and reset. Every other team does this, but the Leafs as a team seem to not value possession in overtime. Also, Domi’s effort after the turn over is the real crime
I was screaming at him this whole shift. It was like two insane passes throwing away possession, and then turning Into a pylon
Can’t we just trade our garbage for others teams good players? 🙁
Real talk though, I hope we can find a way out of these contracts where we’re not getting value and hopefully in the off-season sign some quality pieces.
A pipe dream, I know.
Domi shows glimpses of the high end skill he has but so many nights he’s just coasting around with empty calorie shifts. He’s been a defensive black hole and his lack of offense doesn’t help either.
Unfortunately with all the injuries the Leafs have they don’t really have much of a choice but to play him at Centre until Matthews and Roy comeback.
If his last name wasn’t Domi he wouldn’t be on this team.
Treliving is such a fucking moron to sign him to this contract. What a joke of a gm and a team.
He didn’t give up on the play. He just got beat by a guy who knew he was coming down with speed on a non defensive forward and Domi is small so it’s easy to burn him wide.
Anyone who plays some level of competitive hockey knows this. Domi isnknown to be poor defensively but shows offensive gifts as well.
It was a great game. Tough loss but they are on the right track
when Roy and Matthews are back we should consider scratching him. Quillan has shown enough that he should be given a full time center the 4th line.
Am I missing something but with 40ish seconds left in OT why wouldn’t Domi just take him down? Straight up tackle him if you have to. Give up a 40 second PP with a fresh chance to win in the shootout. Seems like terrible situational awareness on top of the terrible giveaway and terrible ‘defending’.
FWIW that game that Stolie got all hot and bothered in the media, Nylander had a similar dog shit back check. HOWEVER, Nylander makes up for his foibles. Domi is just an anchor with his contract and NTC.
I can’t understand why the coach keeps putting him out there especially in OT after he had so many giveaways and incidences of being hemmed. Every time I looked up that game they were hemmed 11 was on the ice. He has the occasional offensive spurt but he’s so inconsistent and awful defensively.
Bérubé has some sort of obsession with him but if he was anyone other than last name Domi he’d be in the press box.
I know we’ve got a ton of injuries right now, but at the very least Craig NEEDS to stop playing him at centre.
