You’re Locked on Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. So, the good news is, Scotty, Montreal lost two. So, the Detroit Red Wings are going to remain in first place in the Atlantic Division. So, let’s let’s avoid the panic button, right? I just want to get that out of the way right right off the bat. It is not the end of the world. But that was an ugly, ugly, ugly loss. The second ugly loss in a row to the New York Islanders. Um, probably back toback their worst losses in the blowing a 4-1 lead against Buffalo Sabres is up there. So, top three, those are the top three bad worst losses for the Red Wings so far this season is those three. Um, this is Lockdown Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fischer and Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Uh, you can find us wherever you listen to your podcasts, including on YouTube. Today, we’re going to be talking about the five nothing loss to the New York Islanders, and it stink. And we’re going to hopefully not talk about it too long cuz thankfully we have a game preview to do as well as this is the Friday episode and the wings play on Saturday. So little getting getting saved by the bell on that one. Got to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. I felt the Detroit Red Wings came out of the gate and looked like they were going to have a good one. They got a couple of really good opportunities right off the bat. Kane found Confer from behind the net. Confer was able to put it in tight on Sroken. Sroken made a big save. I was like, “Okay, Red Wings are in top form.” And then Marco Casper and Patrick Kane decided to change in the neutral zone during a turnover and things went downhill from there. What would you decide in this game? Are your main storylines? I mean, to be quite frank, I I think my biggest storyline after the buzzer sounded is why can we not play a competitive game against this team? uh like I’ll give a better answer that actually focuses with the product on the ice, but genuinely my my biggest storyline in my head after the clock hit triple zeros was holy bleep, we are just going to lose by seven every single time we play these guys. Um I guess exactly five in both times we’ve played them. Actually, that’s more accurate. Um, you’re exaggerating for effect and it landed. Yeah, but why exaggerate by two when the correct answer is right there? Feels weird. You’re the only one who knows that answer, buddy. No, I don’t. I I think I I think um the biggest storyline for me honestly I you already kind of alluded to the the the mistake that was made with that but I I think this really comes down to how much are we going to really like chicken or egg I feel like I’ve been using that analogy a lot lately blame or hope that the goalending that we saw in this game is not the goalending we see the rest of the way. Like he to be fair to him, I guess. Uh a lot of the goals were were bouncing off of bodies the entire game, but like that’s part of the job, man. Like that’s that’s that’s part of, you know, he’s been doing this a long time. Like that’s that’s part of the gig. And I I think there is not only a worry of like okay this this goalending might still not be very good while there is also a okay maybe you hope that the puck just didn’t bounce their way in this game that they’re all not going to look like this. We have a quarter of a season of sample size which is not huge but you know worth noting of uh of Gibson not being very consistent night in and night out. Yes. Uh Pashant er made a post in on on blue sky that in 12 starts John Gibson has given up four or more goals in seven of those 12 starts. That is not a recipe for winning games and it’s not a good enough result from the guy you traded to be your 1A. Thankfully, the Red Wings have been getting good goalending from Cam Talbett just like they did at the start of last season, but we saw from last season that 30 38-year-old goalies can’t be your number one starter for the entire season. You need John Gibson to at least be able to split the workload in Detroit to for this team to have success. And right now he is not doing that. And yes, you’re right, Scotty. Like John Gibson is the main storyline I feel like for the Detroit Red Wings right now or for this game just because he has been very underwhelming in most of the performances he’s done. Like I think the last time he made a start, we talked about how he isn’t he wasn’t playing poorly, but he wasn’t making the saves that the Red Wings needed in clutch moments. And that was the case again in this game too. And there were two go game two goals in particular where I’m like there is no excuse. My main storyline for this game is of course John Gibson. It’s it’s three things in part that combined for this. It’s poor goalending, poor puck management, and bad luck, right? Some of it’s just that that’s crappy luck with the deflections. But what the the three deflections that were ch created change ups that made it difficult for John Gibson to make the save. Like those are very valid. That is incredibly valid to bring up. But here’s the thing. If it was one game where this happened and he allowed four plus goals, it’d be easy to be like, he just was unlucky today. and he was unlucky today. But when you combine that with six of his other 11 starts that he has made where he’s given up four plus, you start to question, okay, it’s bad luck, but he’s also not playing well enough and he is not. So the first goal, for example, right, I talk about bad puck management. This is where this comes into play. Marco Casper and Patrick Kane decide on a neutral zone turnover that they’re going to change. Creates an oddman rush coming back the other way. I believe it was Ben Sherro. correct me if I’m wrong, on the ice who just had to make a commitment cuz they they were flatfooted. It was they were transitioning out of the zone, then all of a sudden they’re coming back and it was um sorry, pull up my notes really quick so I get the player who scored that goal right. It was uh Richie who just fired a puck past Gibson. That’s one of those moments. There’s no excuse. It was just a shot. John Gibson has to come. It was a wister. It was a from like from like slapshot range off of a faceoff that hit nobody and there wasn’t a hard screen like literally just under his armpit. No, you’re you’re thinking of the second goal. I’m talking about the first goal. Oh. Oh, you said off of the faceoff, but the second goal I think was deflected and it caused it to be from a shot that was rising to a shot that kind of arked down. He still got a piece of it and should have made the save. We were debating it on the broadcast. I never saw an angle that’s had it that like actually saw it touch anything. But like I’ll take everybody’s, you know, word for it. The angle from behind the net, it looked pretty clear that it caught ASP’s stick cuz it was rising and then all of a sudden after it looked like it clipped ASP stick, it came down. U but that’s still up for debate, right? Oh, in the air. Yeah. Yes. In the air it looked like it caught because ASP was the defenseman that was back. But the first goal was just a shot. He should have been able to save it. The second one he got a piece of even though it was deflected. So you give him a little bit of of relief there. Still should have saved it. Um the fourth goal was a backoor one-time that he got over to in time. That was again deflected but that window that gap shorts side is so small. Still probably should have made the save. And then the final goal again was a defensive zone. It was another neutral zone turnover. Andrew Cop tried to go back to his defenseman. So again, puck management tried to go back to his defenseman and instead just turned it over and it was Shabban Shabbanov, I’m sorry, I’m butchering that right now. Just dangled through everybody and scored and another one that he should have saved. And then the uh Barcelon defensive zone turnover because again, you didn’t take care of the puck and it was deflected again. So it was it’s all three, right? it. I’m sorry I I’m going on so long here, Scotty, but I’m just trying to hammer home on all of these goals. It’s one of, if not all three of the bad luck, bad goalending, and bad puck management. So, the thing that I I I and we were talking about this a little bit before we hit record, but like we’ve said this before on this show in previous seasons, too. He it wasn’t that any of the goals he necessarily gave up you look at and you’re like wow like that that’s absolutely awful or anything like that but and again like the deflections all like in that conversation a part of that that line of thinking the thing is he didn’t make any saves that I I think we worded it a couple of seasons ago as like he doesn’t make any saves that surprise you. You know what I mean? Like you you don’t ever you’re never watching the game and you’re like, “Wow, like, oh, here’s a here’s a breakaway. We need a big save here.” No, those have all found the back of the net. Or, oh, like one-timer from, you know, the circle. Like, is he going to get over, you know, post to post in time? It’s like, no, like, you know what I mean? Like it’s it’s just the fact that every single goal you kind of look at and you’re like, “Okay, like I guess I can see why.” But you can’t allow five of those a game, even if that you will watch them and you’re like, “I guess I can kind of see how like that found the back of the net.” Like that’s not totally his fault. Like, okay, but not everybody gives up five of those a game. like they’re they’re all relatively justifiable, but none of them are like he had one incredible save in this game with the the shot that went right into his glove like three minutes into the game. Like outside of that, everything was pretty much just status quo. And uh it’s they they did not give up the assets they gave up and did not put him in like acquire him and put him in this position to be like an average or below average like ah I give up you know three or four meh goals a game and and keep a team in it like you got him to be the the bellcow ultimately. Yeah. And you know, you have to wonder too, Scotty. You have to wonder. I’ll tell you what I’m wondering about in segment two of lockdown. So stay tuned. Good job. Thanks, dude. Let’s be honest. All right, Scotty. You have to wonder with John Gibson playing so underwhelming so many times this season how many more times you give it before you give a certain somebody a look at the NHL level with how they’re playing down in Grand Rapids. And this is something I would not have even humored at the start of the season because I was like, John Gibson, worst case scenario is going to be serviceable. I hate to say it, he has been less than serviceable early on in the season here. John Sebastian Kosa, Scotty, has been playing unreal with the Grand Rapids Griffins. And you have a minor injury that he just came back, but he’s back. Yep. Yeah. Yeah, he came back from Yeah, but he did he missed a couple of games. I I believe he’s posting right now. I’m double checking here real quick. It keeps trying to give me a school instead of a player. There we go. I typed in Sebast I tried to type in Sebastian and it’s like St. Sebastian. I’m like that’s not who I’m looking for. Uh because I just want to get the numbers right. It’s an incredible percentage a school and Oh my god. And of course, lead prospects is not loading. So, just trust me on the fact until it loads that he is playing phenomenal in Grand Rapids right now. Um, I’m sure my screen was freezing like crazy because it was trying to load a web page. Um, Sebastian Kosa has been great with Grand Rapids. So, I wonder at what point how many more chances you give Gibson before you send somebody to Grand Rapids and make room on the roster for Kosa to give him a look. Kosa is 5-0 in five games with one shut out, a 942 save percentage, and a 1.6 goals against average. Uh, yeah, he’s got a 942. It just loaded for me. Oh, that’s so convenient, dude. Yeah, you are. You look like you’re being filmed on a Noia. Um, I think uh we’re not close to it if we’re being like it’s fun to talk about and I’m sure that we can, you know, I’m sure that locked on Red Wings will have a uh is KOSA ready for the NHL episode title in the next like month, but I I I on November 21st, I don’t think that that’s like right around the corner. um that you gave up too many you gave up too significant of assets to acquire Gibson um where you’re you’re not going to pull the plug a month in. Um and like that’s a don’t shoot the messenger situation. Like I’m not telling you that that’s the right or wrong thing to do. I’m just telling you how it is like that they’re not going to bail on this a month in with what they give up a second rounder. That’s not happening. Second and a fourth, I believe. Yeah. And Peter Morazzic, don’t forget him. Yeah, but that that Yeah, that was a little bit more of like So that money went the other way than anything else, but Yes. I mean, I was being facicious. Um, good. What are even other things from this game? Uh, Edmonson and Casper, that’s another bullet point. We talked so long about goalending because it was such the glaring the puck management goalending was such a glaring thing. Edson took another penalty in this game. I think it he has 15 penalties on the season to start the year. It was a brutal interference at center rice. The a very blatant interference, easiest call in the league to make on that kind of play. Luckily, the Red Wings PK is still great. It went, I think, four for four in this game. Uh because the double minor counts as two. But Edmonson’s been finding his way into the penalty box way too much. And he’s honestly he and Casper both and we’ll talk about Casper I’m sure in a second, but he and Casper both have had pretty tough seasons so far in their sophomore years. Edmonson’s playing a little bit better playing with Cider, but Edmonson is just he’s being caught being a little bit too casual too often and it’s leading him to take to take penalties or I know you’re gonna you’re gonna mention that roughing penalty from the other day. I know that’s where you’re Go ahead. Go ahead. No, it’s just we that’s hilarious. But yes, you’re you’re correct. Um yeah, man. Like not only in this game was the the the interference call he had brutal, but this is like a seasonl long thing. And yes, like I I was really frustrated at the interference call he had earlier in the week because I that was just totally unnecessary and stupid to do right in front of a ref. Like just a pointless penalty. but he not only has been getting bad penalties all year, like a third of them are in the first five minutes of the game. Like th there is just something has to change here. That that’s a a huge point of development for him because this is not who he was coming up through the system. And it’s not even I would say who he was last season. Um, and maybe that’s like part of, you know, he’s a little bit more comfortable out there and then like stuff like this happens and he has to, you know, adjust to his adjustment or whatever, but um, yeah, that’s something that that you hope he he develops out of for sure. Yeah. And then Casper, they got to find a way to get him going. I mean, the the kid that we saw, even before he was popping off production-wise, like we constantly were on here praising his his game, saying like the production’s coming, like he just he’s playing with pace. You can see the output and or not the output, the effort is there, but it’s just not leading to anything productive with, you know, whatever line he’s on, whatever position he’s playing. And this one was a real rough run. He takes a 10-minute game misconduct. I my assumption is he probably said something to the ref because there was nothing in the play that would indicate he had done anything. But again, that’s me assuming because I’m not on the ice. I can’t hear what’s being said, but just logically I’m trying to figure out what would have happened. Uh and he just kind of he statistically had a really terrible night, too. He was the worst player on the team at shot attempt share and the worst player one of the worst players of the team with a goal expected goal share. He they if this team’s going to find success, they need to have Marco Kasper get going. And I’m I’m not worried about him, but I am noticing it, so to speak. I don’t think that’s the exactly what I wanted to say there, but like I’m not worried long term, but it it is it is hurting the team right now that he can’t wake up offensively. Yeah. Well, his I mean he got in a fight like that was I mean like for Marco like that I liked that. I I did like that too and it was a moment of catharsis I think for the fan base and the team itself because seeing him one he dumped the angel in the corner and he took exception and they dropped the gloves quickly. Um wasn’t much of a fight but it was nice to see Casper get the better of it. Uh it wasn’t a fight. No, but uh only one man ended on top, you know. That’s uh that’s that’s all I got to say. That was We’ll take it. We’ll take We’ll take it. No. And it just It’s just if the the best players on the team are playing like their best players right now, but you we talked a lot in the preseason about how if the Red Wings are going to find success, it was going to come from Edmonson and Casper taking a step forward and so far haven’t seen it. I’m not hitting the panic button cuz they’re young and sophomore slumps are a thing for a reason, right? But it is uh it is a little disappointing because you hope to you hope to see more. Yeah, of course. And that’s something we was that literally yesterday’s show that we talked about, right? Like depth scoring needs to be a thing. And Marco Casper is again, not to put it all on on one guy’s shoulders, but he’s going to be a huge part of that. like he he is a a massive uh a massive key to the production from anybody outside of the top four guys on the team. So um yeah, really important to get him going obviously and then I mean you could point you hope Finny keeps it going. You you obviously hope Danielson can stay hot like etc etc. But um you know Casper this is this is year two for him so you hope so. Yeah. Let’s head to another break, Scotty. When we return, we’ll, I guess, preview the game against Columbus Blue Jackets. So stay tuned to that segment three of Lockdown Red Wings. Let’s be real, making excuses doesn’t solve anything. I think I went into that break with the wrong transition slide, too. So, you did. Yeah. Cool. Streand affecting it right now by bringing it up and not just moving past it. Um, that’s on me though. Scotty, any final thoughts on the game as a whole? I mean, we could talk about Schaefer and Soren. They were great, but this is Lockdown Red Wings podcast, so what do you Anything you got? Schaefer’s amazing. Yes. Incredible kid. Man, I I uh I think Azie said maybe it was Azie. Somebody on the Wings broadcast said during one of the intermissions like he quite literally reshaped the entire on ice strategy for this hockey team. Like, and I know we talked about that a little bit yesterday too on here, but like seeing it again, like he he quite literally changed everything is built around not necessarily around him in the sense of like uh like he’s on the ice 60 minutes or anything like that, but it it is it is the game plan is how do we make the most out of this talent we have on the blue line? And it it it shows, man. and they do a great job. Yeah. And and just for that, I will always be grateful for Matthew Schaefer because he got the Islanders to change their play style and now they’re not the most boring hockey team in the world to watch. That falls upon the Carolina Hurricanes. Um Scotty, the Detroit Red Wings play the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday at 1:00 and the Blue Jackets are off to a decent start, 118 and two. They’re third in the Metropolitan Division. Uh, Kar Marenko continues to cement himself as a young star. I’m grateful to have him on my fantasy hockey team. That’s neither here nor there. Um, but he’s the only reason I have any wins this season. Something because you brought it up. He and Cut Cutter got Gochier are the only players that are because Jack Hughes is out. Austin Matthews is out. Roman Yosi is out. All my best players are hurt. So, you gotta That’s a heck of a team. Yes. Not in a good way. No. Well, I mean, they’re good players. They just can’t stay healthy. Yeah. Anyway, Scotty, I digress. I shouldn’t have even brought it up. I apologize. Uh, Columbus Blue Jackets, man, what what do we know about these guys? Well, I mean, last year they were one of the big talking points of the NHL. way exceeded expectations obviously and uh played some really really good and exciting hockey over the last month or two of the regular season last year. This year they’ve kind of carried that into this season. Not that they’re a juggernaut or anything, but they’re 118 and two. Like they’re right around I mean that that’s pretty much exactly where the wings are at just with two more games played. So um actually no, that’s a lie. literally just the same amount of games played, just one uh loser point versus the Wings have a regulation win. So, um yeah, like I I mean this is a team we kind of know how they operate. I I mean it’s it’s funny like we talk about how great, you know, Schaefer is and how they’ve kind of built the offense around him. Not that it’s necessarily that dramatic just bec like in terms of goal scoring, but like Worinsky is one of the best uh offensive defenseman in the entire NHL as well. He was what he won runner up for Norris. He I guess not winning, but he was runner up for Norris last year. Yeah. So, um incredible talent. Uh Gross Point Michigan product by the way. I got to interview him and write an article about him last year. It was really cool during Four Nations. Um but yeah, man. like that that’s that’s the identity of this team. Uh year what is this? Year two of Fanty. Like they’re hoping that he can take another step forward. Um they they’ve been around middle of the pack in in pretty much every stat. They’ve gotten fantastic goalending actually. Outside of that, they’ve been around middle of the pack in in every other stat and and the offense is going to be driven by the the blue line and by uh Rowinsky uh back there. So yeah, like you said, they’re middle of the pack and most of those five on five statistics that we tend to reference on here. Uh their goalending’s been pretty good. Their special teams has been pretty been poor by comparison. It’s in the lower third of the league in both. So that’s I think the Red Wings are pretty well poised to win this hockey game because the Red Wings are top half of the league in almost every five on five category and their power play and penalty kill are both top half of the league as well. So, and also I mean you talk about PDO and everything which the luck statistic whatever the Blue Jackets are kind of exactly where they should be just given every all the statistics you look at right they are carried by pretty good goalending they’re not terrible they’re not great at really anything they have Carl Marenko Zacharensky to me that’s like two big reasons and the good goalending big reasons why they’re playing pretty well right now but the Red Wings I think are pretty well positioned to beat this hockey team. But that being said, you there’s never any guarantee. I think this is a game the Red Wings should win, but there’s no no guarantees in hockey as we saw tonight. Red Wings were on a four-game point streak and then got blown out five nothing at home. So, for sure. Yeah. I mean, they’ll be favored uh I think going into this game. But that like the Blue Jackets are on like almost a calendar year, just under a calendar year of playing, you know, pretty darn high-end playoff caliber hockey as a team. So certainly uh not not the not your older brother’s Columbus Blue Jackets, if you will. Scotty, do you have any final thoughts? I don’t think so, man. We ball get back on the horse and uh and the horse is named Friday. Friday. Let’s have a weekend. All right, we’ll be back with a new episode to recap that game on Monday. Stay tuned. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.
The Detroit Red Wings were bound for a stinker, but it coming while John Gibson is in net is becoming all too common. Gibson allows 4+ goals in 7 of his 12 starts, and while the Red Wings poor puck management and deflections certainly didn’t help, he needs to be better. the Red Wings play Columbus Saturday. #LGRW

Give Cossa a chance
Gibson did have a spectacular stretch save in the dying minutes but yeah, the problem remains.
Put Gibby in on Saturday and play a good game to give him some confidence and we’ll be fine. I can’t emphasize how important confidence is to a goalie.
I'm thinking Edvinsson's frequent trips to the box are tied to his promotion to the #1 D line. He's having trouble keeping up with the pace of top line opponents, physically and mentally…
Brian Fisher – Edvinsson getting run into is blatant interference, getting in the way of other players and getting run into is not allowed as a Red Wing
If you can't even score a goal, I don't care about the ones that you wish Gibson had been able to save. He's not there to work miracles until the team figures out how to play hockey. He's supposed to be the last line of defense, but the way this team plays in front of him. So far as here, he's almost the only defense.
Kasper has basically been invisible this year, especially compared to how he played last year!
Scotty your thinking is severely flawed, Gibson is the problem. Quit trying to blame anyone else.
Scotty, stick with baseball!
It should be the end for Gibson. Trade him for a bag of pucks and future considerations.
They need to send Gibson down to GR. With the contract they signed him too and his performance on the ice, he should clear waivers. I personally would trade his ASS, or just take the loss and cut him.
bad coaching, players felt like they wanted to just watch their own terrible game, gibson proves to be another goalie bust like NED aka Husso, why we trade MRazek for him, who knows. It's time to give gibson the husso treatment, send him down, bring up Cossa, John Leonard, Mazur and Tralmaks, send down elmer, berrgren, the time is now, not then. I really can't understand why Todd, who should be fired, left Gibson in, the guy couldn't save a shot from blue line.
Last 15 games we have up 4.3 game and we're in first doesn't say much for our division.i mean 5-0 again against a team we should have smashed ..no hitting until it over.gibson not at fault he just only one who would allow his goal against go through roof .he want o to retire hell I be your goalie for a million sleep in five star hotels travel around country on red bird one eat fine foods and all I have to do is get shelled. Hell yeah I do it wouldn't you
"You gave up too many assets to acquire Gibson…" Guys, we as fans need to figure out what the hell we actually want, here. Do we want playoffs? If we want playoffs, we need to cut off the hand that is gangrene before it spreads, call up Cossa, and give him his shot. Now, if we want to try to make Gibson work, then fine, let's ride that out til the wheels fall off, and have the boys reserve their mid-April tee times now and hope we win the draft lottery. Either way, we need to get this sorted.
Honestly I think your webcam cost us the game. I was at the game so I can confirm.
The awnser is easy, anytime we have some sort of celebration before puck drop we play like shit. No rhyme or reason to it but it is what happens
I didn't expext Gibson to be great but i thought he would be good enough
The word I would use for kasper Brian is skeptical, he seems like he’s in and around the play but once he gets the puck on his stick he’s just panicky and doesn’t really know what to do with it, I think because he’s moved to wing these past few games he’s been subject to bullying along the boards, once he gets more aggressive and hunting pucks instead of just waiting for any given play to develop, he will thrive but right now he just seems frightened by anything that comes his way, not sure how you feel about it but that’s kinda what I’ve been seeing
I'm an Islander so take it as you may Goaltending didn't lose this game 3 of the goals were deflected a backdoored he a had no chance he was your best player on the kill he didn't have good game, but you can't blame goalie when you get SO
BRIAN! your video quality is killing me. please fix it
Edvinsson seems to be reaching in with his stick to try and break up plays instead of moving his feet and using his body. This is leading to some of his penalties.
Time to trade Gibson for anybody.
This team is going to find themselves in the basement very soon. The division is awfully tight and won't take much to drop out of contention. They just dont have it.
This all only proves one thing, that the Red Wings pro scouting has yet again, failed miserably…
