Yankees Breaking News: Ornelas Signs, Seager Trade Rumors,Grisham Returns
Hello, Yankees universe. Welcome back to your go-to channel, New York Yankees News Network. Today, we have three jam-packed updates about our Bronx Bombers, which have just surfaced or come to our notice a few hours ago. If you are a true Yankees fan, you don’t want to miss these updates. And yes, before we start the video, we request you that if you are new to the channel, don’t forget to like and subscribe so that you can stay in the loop. So, let’s dive into our first major story of the day. Update one. Yankees sign infielder Jonathan Ornelis. A defensive diamond or a minor league mystery? The New York Yankees are making moves and the first one on our radar is a minor league agreement with infielder Jonathan Ornellis. This news was first reflected on the major league baseball.com transaction tracker. This signing, while a minor league deal, is very interesting, especially when you look at the current makeup of the Yankees infield. First off, we know Ornellis has been extended a non-roster invitation to Major League Baseball spring training. This gives him a chance to truly compete for a spot. The contract also reportedly includes a clause where he could opt out midway through the season if he is not added to the 40man roster. This tells us that Ornelis is confident in his ability to make an impact and isn’t just looking to settle in the minor leagues. Now, let’s look at his recent history. Ornelis split his past season between the Texas Rangers and the Atlanta Braves. He spent the majority of the year in AAA where his bat struggled. In nearly 400 played appearances, he posted a slash line of only.196 batting average, 295 on base percentage, and a 303 slugging percentage. His limited work in the big leagues hasn’t been much better as he has a career batting average of.208 208 and a263 on base percentage over 32 major league baseball contests in the last three seasons with zero home runs. A former third round draft choice, his minor league hitting track record, which includes a 233 batting average, 331 on base percentage, and 331 slugging percentage over parts of three AAA seasons, also indicates that hitting is not his primary strength. So, why are the Yankees bringing him in? The answer is clear. His glove and defensive versatility. This is where the Yankees are betting big. Ornellis has logged more than 3,500 minor league innings at shortstop. In addition to this primary position, he also has ample second and third base experience and has even gotten some work in center field and left field. This defensive flexibility is incredibly valuable, especially considering the Yankees current infield situation. Anthony Vulpi is likely to begin the season on the injured list as he works back from shoulder surgery. While Jose Cabierro is projected to be the starting shortstop, barring any other offseason acquisitions, the Yankees need reliable depth. The current backup infielders include Braden Shoemake, Jorbit Vivas, and Oswaldo Cabrera. Shoemake is the only natural shortstop among this group and he is coming off a.244 batting average, 318 on base percentage and 362 slugging percentage showing in AAA. The Yankees are expected to add at least one more established depth infielder. For Orelis, this is a decent landing spot as he will have a chance to battle for an opening day job. Even with the rough hitting numbers, his defensive profile is exactly what a team needs for depth and injury insurance. It’s a low-risk, potentially highreward move for the Yankees. What do you think of this defensive-minded addition, Yankees fans? Do you think Ornelis can clean up his hitting enough to make the big league club? Update two blockbuster trade alert. Yankees predicted to land Corey Seager in massive Rangers payroll dump. Yankees fans, hold on to your hats. One of the most electrifying and game-changing storylines of this 2026 Major League Baseball off season is a potential trade that could deliver a superstar shortstop to the Bronx. This is a prediction, not an official report, but the reasons for it are compelling. The story starts with the Texas Rangers. They are reportedly looking to reshape their team and the main way they plan to do this is by cutting their payroll ahead of the 2026 season. Their goal is to reallocate that money to make the team younger. While discussions have centered on possibly non-tendering key players like Adulles Garcia or Jonahheim, a more impactful way to shed a massive chunk of salary is through a trade. And that is where our target Cory Seager comes in. He is owed a whopping $186 million over the next six seasons or nearly $190 million. A huge part of the Rangers payroll. Moving him may make the most sense for the Rangers future. Now, why the Yankees? The pressure is mounting on Aaron Boone and Brian Kman to get the team back to winning the World Series after being eliminated in the American League Divisional Series in the 2025 season. The biggest issue that plagued the team last season was the shortstop position. The numbers don’t lie. Per fan graphs, the Yankees were tied for the fifth worst production from the shortstop position in terms of wins above replacement in 2025 with a value of just 1.2. 2 following a less than stellar defensive year from Anthony Vulp. Combined with his slashline of only 212 batting average, 272 on base percentage and 391 slugging percentage, the Yankees clearly need an answer at shortstop. And Cory Seager is an elite solution. Just last season, despite missing some time due to injury, Seager was phenomenal. He produced a slash line of 0.271 271 batting average, 373 on base percentage, and a487 slugging percentage along with 21 home runs. He was ranked seventh in the league in wins above replacement, which would have been a massive help to the Yankees last season. Seager is a proven talent, a five-time all-star and a two-time World Series most valuable player. His experience and his impact next to Aaron Judge in the lineup would be immense. Crucially for this trade prediction, Seager does have a limited list of teams he can veto a trade to, but reports from Evan Grant of Newswe.com indicate that the New York Yankees are not on that list. This is a major factor that makes this prediction possible. The potential return for the Rangers. If the Yankees are going to acquire this superstar, they will have to give up significant assets. Here are some potential pieces that could go to Texas. the big contract factor. The return package will be significantly less if the Yankees agree to take on the majority of the remaining contract. Major League roster piece. The Rangers might want a current major league player with Ryan McMahon being a name mentioned. Trading McMahon could free up a third base spot for a potential positional shift of Anthony Vulp or Jose Cabalero, allowing Seager to man shortstop. McMahon is a proven glove who has flashed power, making him a valuable piece for the Rangers infield depth. Pitching prospects. The Rangers are also looking to bolster their pitching staff and depth. Bryce Cunningham, the Yankees number five prospect per Major League Baseball pipeline, who has two 60grade pitches in his fastball and slider. Ben Hess, a 2024 firstround pick who has an intriguing 6’5, 255-lb frame with a phenomenal fastball and curveball. After seven starts in double A in 2025, he could be major league ready sooner than Cunningham. Given the Yankees lack of position player depth in the farm system, they would likely have to move some of their better arms to make this deal happen. For the Yankees, getting Seager would solidify one of their biggest weaknesses and give them an elite left-handed bat who is tailorade for Yankee Stadium. Tell me, Yankees nation, is trading top prospects for a World Series MVP like Cory Seager the move Brian Cman must make. Update three, the Trent Gisham twist. Yankees outfield puzzle just got $180 million. more complicated. Yankees fans, just when we were all focused on the superstar trade speculation for Cory Seager and the internal moves for a defensive infielder like Jonathan Ornelis, we got a huge curveball. In a move that has heavily complicated the team’s outfield math for next season, center fielder Trent Gisham accepted the qualifying offer and will officially return to the New York Yankees in 2,26. Gisham is set to earn a shade over $22 million after having what was truly a breakout 2025 season at the plate. He batted 235 with a career best 34 home runs and 87 runs batted in. General manager Brian Cman was clearly fine with retaining him or at least getting the draft pick if he signed elsewhere. Cashman had even acknowledged a very thin outfield market at the general manager meetings earlier this month. But here is where the complication comes in and this affects all the massive spending rumors. The defensive dilemma Gisham is a two-time gold glove center fielder which is fantastic but he just turned in the worst defensive season of his career. In 2025, he finished with negative 111 defensive runs saved and a negative three fielding run value. Yankees brass must now ask, was this a fluke or are his legs aging early and losing some range? And can he possibly replicate that 30 homer campaign? The roster crunch and costly decisions with Aaron Judge locked down in right field and Gisham penciled in at center. The Yankees now have one outfield spot left to fill, but arguably two roster spots available. This forces Cashman to choose between four key players for two positions, two free agents, and two internal options. On the free agent market, Cody Bellinger, a perfect fit, batting behind Aaron Judge last season. He hit .2272 with 29 home runs and 98 runs batted in. He also posted a positive 12 defensive runs saved while playing all three outfield positions and can cover first base in an emergency. He is projected to cost about $180 million. Kyle Tucker, easily the golden goose of this offseason’s free agency class. The lefty swinger is a fivetool threat and his swing is tailor made for Yankee Stadium. Despite a relatively down year, he posted a 4.3 wins above replacement in 136 games. However, he will cost upwards of $300 million. Internal options. The future is Foggy Jackson Dominguez. The switchhitting youngster still struggles batting right-handed. He will be 23 when spring training starts and needs to play every day to succeed. Gisham’s return could push him off the roster entirely. Spencer Jones. The top prospect broke out in the minors, hitting 274 with 35 home runs across double and AAA. But he still has a high strikeout rate, 35.6% and questions about his hit tool. Gisham accepting the qualifying offer doesn’t mean the end for Dominguez or Jones, but it gives Cman another costly plate to spin. He has to solve this outfield puzzle, add starting pitching, and boost the bullpen. The Gisham deal is movable, but right now Cashman is hoping, praying, and wishing that Trent Gisham’s 2025 breakout wasn’t a fluke. The road to the World Series starts now. And that wraps up today’s jam-packed edition of the New York Yankees News Network. What do you think, Yankees Universe? Should the Yankees push all their chips in for a player like Cory Seager? Should they stop pursuing an expensive outfielder and trust Jackson Dominguez or Spencer Jones? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Not against this but Cabellero & Cabrera can easily do the job in Volpe's absense. 😊
The Seager possibility is interesting but no sane GM wants to part with talented young pitching. McMahon has a good glove but can't hit. Quite expendable.
The yankees should trade for a younger and better SS with lower salary like Prodomo, Rocco
That's all the Yankees do is patch up player's, wake up Hal steinbrener spend your billions and get good players and pitchers not scrubs who can't hit or field to save there careers.
How about filling that spot in the outfield with Spencer Jones.
