This is EXACTLY What the Padres Need…

This is exactly what the Padres’s need as the tender non-tender decision deadline was today. Some players have been dropped, some players have been added. Who could the Padres scoop up? Let’s talk about it. Hi, welcome back to another episode of Padres’s Digest with your host Andrew. Today we’re looking at possibly hopefully cheap players that might be able to add to the Padres’s in the future. I got some lot of names for you. some we’ll focus on more than others, but if you want to hear any other names that are non- tendered or whatever and you want us to focus on it, let us know. Anyways, before we get too deep into it though, please subscribe as always. We’re getting super close to 3,000. We’ll do our first live stream eventually. That’ll be cool. What else is cool though? Are these possible players? I think the R Yeah, the Rangers have some really big ones we’ll focus on. Uh and then there’s some more low-key names. But basically the goal of this is to know that well let me let me start with this. These players aren’t like amazing or anything. So like don’t get that like in your head like these are the gamechanging players. I know I said exactly what we need but what we need right now isn’t really game changer players. We need people to fill holes. And I think the players I’ve chosen here well most of them are a solid hole filler. Can I say that? A solid hole filler. Because we have some needs, right? catcher, backup catcher. I know we just signed Capusano for a mill. Is he a good backup catcher? I don’t know. We need some starting pitching. We need some power. We need some maybe a first baseman. We need a lot of things, right? The goal today is to find some possible players that could hopefully be cheap cuz you guys know I love scraping the bottom of the barrel to find you the most random players. But let’s start with players who are not random. Players you absolutely know. Adulles Garcia, two-time all-star 2023 ALCS MVP and World Series champion, has been non-tendered by the Texas Rangers and is now a free agent. We have absolutely made videos about Adulus Garcia. So, he’s not a name you shouldn’t know. You should know him is what I’m trying to say. Uh, but I think he’s a very interesting player. So, for starters, I know we don’t really need an outfielder, but we do need a DH and I think he could fill that hole pretty nicely. Let’s look at some stats right here. So, defensively, he is pretty good. So, I feel like maybe Lauriano could be a DH. I mean, honestly, even Tatis could be a DH. That’d be stupid because he’s the best defender in the league, but he could be, you know what I mean? Maybe platoon him like every every so often. But if anything, he could play DH, right? But his last year stats not as good as they were in 2023 where he had 39 home runs and you can see the differences between the two. But like he’s still really good. I mean 19 home runs is good. It’s not crazy. It’s not amazing, but it’s good. Slug is still good. 394. And what do we need? We need some slug. Uh his expected on base or expected average was a little bit better than what it should have or his expected batting average was better than what it was. So it should have been better. And I think maybe a change of scenery will be nice. But he’s non-tender. He’s a free agent. I don’t think he’ll be too expensive. maybe 15 if even with this kind of contract situation in the league. I’m hoping maybe less than 15, 10 maybe. Even then, I’m still happy with that. So, I think he’s a interesting option. I’m not saying he’s the best option. I’m saying he’s an interesting option. The batting run value is not as good as it was, but he can still base run. He can still field, and he still has better slug than 90% of our team. So, I’ll take you I’ll let you guys make decisions. Another player who you might recognize but is not really that great of a name anymore, Jonah Heheim. He’s also a free agent because he’s non-tendered by the Rangers. Uh Fermine and Heim could be a solid duo and give each other rest when needed. Probably cheap, too. And I think he will definitely be cheaper than um Adolles Garcia. The batting stats don’t look great, right? They haven’t really looked great, but again, catcher is not really a there’s a lot there’s not a lot of great hitting catchers. There’s not that many cow rallies in the league, right? So, don’t don’t expect a cow rally. Expect someone who will do a good enough job, right? I mean, 11 home runs, I think, still is more than Fedamine if you like home runs as a stat. His defense not as good as it was, but he is still around an average defender. I’m not saying he should be the starting catcher, but I’m saying even these stats are still better than what Kusano gave us last year and could make a solid backup catcher. And he has potential, right? I mean, in 2023, he had 18 home runs, 258 average, which isn’t like incredible. It’s not amazing, but a 438 slug, 755 OPS, that’s something we could absolutely use on this team. Maybe 5 million. I’m not sure. They didn’t give us any contract details, but maybe even less than 5 million. I don’t know. But would you guys pay a price for that kind of player backup catcher? I don’t know. It’s interesting. We’re not paying Fedamine that much. So, would you pay more than what our regular catcher is going to make or would you rather splurge and get a for sure starter catcher over Federine? You let me know. You let me know. But I’ll bring up some extra names that could also fill the backup position without being too expensive. Uh, but another name, not not really anything we need, but why not? Evan Phillips, one of the pitchers for the Dodgers, who I know the relief pitchers back in the or last year. Can I say last year yet? Relief pitchers from this year for the Dodgers weren’t great. But Evan Evan Phillips was never really a horrible pitcher and we like bullpeners. Even if he was a filthy, disgusting Dodger, there’s still a place for him. So, I had chat GBT, my best friend, run through a list of players that are non-tendered that I got from a CBS article. Let me quote, let me uh give them their credit because I don’t want to, you know, steal their work. But Mike Axisa, Axisa, Axisa, uh, shout out to you. I am quoting your article. So, thank you so much for writing all this stuff for us. But basically, also, these graphics are going to look super poor. I was super busy today. I don’t have time to make special graphics. So I definitely just copy and pasted from chat GBT. So just be aware of that. But let’s look at some names, right? I told Chat GBT what we need. I did some uh working things. I worked with him. I guess him. Can I say him for chat GBT? Whatever. Right. But these are some top tier impact fits for the Padres’s. These guys who are are these are guys who can realistically start or be high impact roles players in 2026. If you guys want to make full videos on any of these players, please please please let me know. Uh I will. I think some of these players would be cool to do some videos on. Firstly, and most importantly, Christopher Morell, roll DH, occasional left fielder, third base. Why the Padres’s need him? They need power badly. He has 20 to 30 home run potential. Terrible glove, but we don’t need a glove. We need a DH. Only projected to make around $3 million, so hella cheap. Three years of team control left. Very good. Peak AV is a Preller style upside. And this is why at least chat GBT says it is our number one fit. I agree with that. And again, we might make a full I probably will make a full video on him and someone else in a later date. But Jake Freillley also from the Rays. Uh he can play left field, right field, first base, DH, which is something we desperately would love to have. Uh that makes sense. I don’t know. Why Padres’s need him? Left-handed bat with a left-handed bat versus right-handed pitcher. Perfect platoon. Crushes right-handed pitchers. 80s 8 I can’t read. 806 OPS versus right-handed pitchers in his career. Can fake left field right field. Does that mean he can kind of play? I guess. Cheap around $3.6 million. And the exact need for Padres’s lineup balance. A very real DH left field answer. Left field. We have Lauriano. I would say a more DH first base answer. But I digress. Nathaniel Low, a first baseman starter. Why the Padres’s need him? They literally have no first base besides maybe Sheets, which I agree with. Besides Cronin Worth 2, I guess. Former Silver Slugger, really good defender on base on base potential machine uh percentage, but potential makes more sense. Won’t hit 35 home runs, but stabilizes first base. Could be a cheap after non-tender. 6 to 8 million range instead of 13 million. If the Padres’s want a real first baseman without spending big, this is the move. I like that one, too. I might make a video on him. MJ Melendez, first base, left field, DH kind of player. Need some left-handed power revival candidate. Uh, had a down year, but still huge tools. Padres’s love fixable hitters with loud tools. Again, Gavin Sheets. Uh, yeah, just Gavin Sheets. I was trying to think of someone else. Kind of just Gavin Sheets. Everyone else questionable, but you know what? That’s fine. 15 to 25 home run power. Can play left field and Pekco big field, but he’s athletic enough. Sneaky, great fit if he’s cheap. Again, I know we have Lauriano, but say Lauraniano aggresses, it’d be nice to have a backup and he can play first base or DH. So, it’s not like he has nowhere to fit on this lineup. There’s a role for him. Also, if you guys can hear my dogs, I’m so sorry. It was raining all day. They’re super muddy. I don’t want to I don’t want to put him inside. I don’t want to clean them off right now. So, if they bark, I’m sorry. Love my dogs, though. But shut up. But I love them. But shut up. Okay. Sorry. Uh where were we? Second tier. useful, affordable pieces. Okay, hold on. Let me yell at them real quick. With love, of course. Okay, my bad. Dogs, am I right? So, second tier, useful, affordable pieces. These guys aren’t like great, but they fill holes. What do we need right now? Hole fillers. So, Will Brennan from the Guardians. He can play left field, right field, good on base percentage, good glove, no power whatsoever, but he’s cheap. And he helps if the Padres’s trade one of their outfield pieces. I don’t know why we do that to be honest. But again, we need someone like a Bryce Johnson, like a better Bryce Johnson. Maybe someone who can fill just in case like Merryill gets injured again or Tatis gets injured again cuz in the nicest way possible, that’s a very real likely possibility. Michael Tolia from the Rockies. You probably recognize the name. First base outfielder, which we could probably use, right? Why switch hititterter? Loud power but bad contact rate. Could be a DH project. Padres’s love fix the approach, guys. more upside than Bowowers, less floor. They didn’t include a Bowowers. Did they include a Bowowers? Did I forget about Bowers? Uh, whatever. Jake Bowers, I’m assuming that’s what they mean. Uh, but I mean, I don’t see why not, right? I know PCO Park is not really a hitter’s paradise. And obviously, uh, Coorsfield is. So, can that transfer over the PCO Park? Probably not. But he’s cheap. Why not, right? What worst thing you release him if he’s probably going to cost like what, a million, three million? I don’t know, release him if we have to. Andy Abanz, Tigers, utility second baseman. This is more for a fit if we don’t resign like Jose Glaciius, but uh contact first bat, solid role player, cheap, not a need, but viable depth, and we need that. I said that weird, but we need that, right? Moving on. Starting pitchers, realistic Padres’s targets. We need some cheap arms behind Paveta, Musgrove, and Vasquez. Here are the best fits. Now, I know I used him as a thumbnail. I’ll probably make a video on him at some point, but for right now, Alex Monoa from the Braves. I didn’t even know he was on the Braves right now, but a starting pitching bounceback candidate, former Sai Young candidate, only 27 years old. Hash control issues post injury. Padres’s love these rehab redemption projects. Could sign for 2 to four million. Huge upside, high risk, but perfect for the Padres’s. I have been wanting Alex Monoa since he was available from the Blue Jays. I still want Alex Manoa. I think there’s dog in him. And if there’s literally anyone in this league who can fix a pitcher, any kind of pitcher, it is Ruben Nebla and maybe even Craig Stamon. But I very much want Alex Monoa. You might not want him. I really want him and I hope you guys do too. But Josh, I’m going to say his name so wrong. Wincha Winchow Win Kakowski, whatever. Red Sox. He can play starting pitcher. He can play relief pitcher which is a good role for us. 94 95 mile per hour sinker. Good ground ball profile. Can start or relieve. Padres’s bullpen lab type signing. And I like a good ground ball pitcher. I mean look at Wani Peralta. He succeeded this year because we have a good defense behind him. So think something like that but maybe more starter than reliever. But again even a long inning relief guy is something we could use right now. Joey Lou Casey. Who remembers Joey Lou Casey? I remember Joey Lou Casey. still in the league does not want not in the Giants anymore. But if we need a number five starter or some more depth, I don’t see why not, right? We we know how kind we 420 erra type kind of pitcher is the epitome of who Jo Casey is. So I’m not saying he’s like, oh my god, we have to sign him, but why not, right? Why not? I like him. You remember him? Why not? Uh next one. We did that one. We did that one. Just a couple more for you guys. Relievers. Uh, Dowy Moretta Pirates because, you know, we can always use more bullpen arms. Why not? Nasty stuff. 13K per nine innings in 220 23, which is very good. Inconsistent command screams Padres’s pitching lab special. I’d say this is the number one bullpen fit over uh Evan Phillips, they’re saying. I don’t know if they even included Evan Phillips in this. Uh, no, but whatever, right? Ian Hamilton from the Yankees. setup man candidate slider change hybrid misses bats durable will be in demand I agree and again remember we have Ruben Ybla Mark Lighter Jr. also from the Yankees. Uh, right-handed middle reliever, filthy splitter. Padres’s like this pitch type. Low walk rate. Could close in San Diego if needed. No way in hell would he ever close for San Diego with the bullpen we have. But you know what? We’ll take another closer. Why not? Albert Suarez from the Orioles, multi-inninging reliever. Very good. 2024 metrics. Padres’s need exactly his role. Cheap. Sure. I don’t really know much about him, but sure. And then Scott Eras, another Yankees rehabbing reliever. Side armor. Padres’s love weird arm slots. Could be a steal when healthy. I’m assuming he’s like a a Tim Hill type player. If you remember who Tim Hill is, and I don’t mind a Tim Hill type player. He had good moments, good bad m good moments, bad moments. You never know, right? Uh oops. And then catchers. Last one. We have Luis Composado and Kyle Federin. Kyle Fetamine. Freddy Fedine. What are you doing chat GBT? Uh but we don’t always use a a third catcher or honestly a second catcher. But Reese Maguire from the Cubs backup defense first catcher. Strong framer, good game caller, veteran presence, light bat, but Padre’s don’t need offense from catching position. Cheap and left-handed. I think he’d be a good backup with Fetamine if we want another Fedine type player. But if you’re looking for a more offense first catcher, nope. And then this guy, honestly, Triple A depth could be a good like think like Brett Sullivan type. If you remember who Brett Sullivan is, not a major league solution, but useful depth. But for best pot for the Padres’s best fits, Reese Maguire good behind Compos and Fedamine if we want defense. Jonah only if we want a major change. I want to take a huge risk. And then Poso if you want another catcher because honestly, we do need more catchers on this organization. But Ethan Solas, hopefully he can make a huge leap. But yeah, that was a lot of players. Let me know if you guys want deeper dives on any of these players. Uh, but yeah, I think there’s some good cheap players out there, even expensive players like Adulles Garcia. But I think there somewhere in this list we can make a good team if we go out there and be like, “Hey, we want you.” But I want you guys to please subscribe. Please comment. Let me know what you guys think. Who do you want? Who do you hate? Andrew, find some real good players like Pete Alonzo. Stop giving us bottom of the barrel crap. Uh, but yeah, thank you guys so much for watching. Sorry for the kind of long video, but please subscribe. Go Padres’s uh baseball.

Today, Andrew McFarland talks about players who are available, possibly cheap, and could be great fits in a team with lots of minor holes to fill…

  1. Padre ownership isn't interested in anybody for over 1 million and one year possibly, two years. This looks like a lot of dumpster diving again for AJ to try and put SOME SORT of team together. Ownership simply isn't going to spend the money. So we don't have much to look forward to in 2026 and we can probably look to a 2027 lockout. The next two seasons don't look too positive for the Padres OR THEIR FANS.
