Alabama beat up on lowly Eastern Illinois today, but Simpson had perhaps his worst outing. Simpson finished the game 11-for-16 passing for 147 yards and the two interceptions in limited action. With the game out of hand, Alabama left the mop up duties to the substitutes.

Simpson threw an early interception and was fortunate not to throw another on a pass over the middle, into too much traffic, in the final minute of the first half. A few plays later, he was picked off again on the final play of the half, albeit on a Hail Mary into the end zone. Simpson sat out the second half, giving him three interceptions over his last six quarters of action.

We'll see what happens. If he kills it the last few games, a bad performance against Eastern Illinois isn't going to tank him. Even though I want Mendoza, it's best to have options and Simpson playing well increases the chances of Mendoza dropping to the Jets' pick. With Simpson only having a relatively small number of starts under his belt, and not being a physical specimen, a few bad outings could have an outsized effect on his draft position. Let's hope that he bounces back next game.

  1. I really don’t want us to draft a QB and just load up on talent. This class is shaping up to be awful. I like Mendoza but only one team gets him and he’s not even a can’t miss guy. We’re not even sure AG is the guy do we really want him choosing our next QB? Get me Arvelle Reese and have him, JJ and WMD wreak havoc on Olines. Then a WR with the other first.
