CAVS UNLEASHED: Darius Garland’s Presence RECHARGES Cleveland Cavaliers’ Joy and Potential
On today’s show, the Cavs get a win over the Indiana Pacers. Darius Garland makes his return to the floor. And the Cavs kind of looked like the Cavs again. So you can see the NBA Cup floor while it’s still up. This is the last time this year it will be up here in Cleveland. But the big story from this game, Darius Garland was back after he had missed the previous five games for the Cavs after suffering what was deemed a tow contusion by the team in the first game the Cavs played down in Miami against the Heat last week. Missed the last five games, came back, played in this one, and I thought he looked like Darius Garland. I know that he had missed the last five, but even in the three games that he had played prior to that injury, or I guess two and a half games is probably a more accurate way to phrase it, I thought that this was the best that he’s looked. I thought that he moved around very well. Now, there was a little bit of an injury scare in the second half. It was kind of like, oh man, Darius Garland went down. And I do kind of think it’s going to be one of those things where when Garland hits the deck, going to be a lot of people holding their breath. Uh, at least for a little while until he is fully 100% over this. I don’t know necessarily when that’s going to be. Obviously, he is healthy enough to be playing and I think he looks so much healthier than what he looks like in the postseason against these, you know, not exactly the same Indiana Pacers, but against the Indiana Pacers in that series. And I thought the impact that Garland had on the Cavs is is one that is so hard, I think, to put just into numbers. And like we can do that, we can put it to numbers if we want to. I can tell you about how the Cavs have an offensive rating in the four games that Darius Garland has played when he’s on the floor of 130. Like I could tell you about how their net rating when Darius Garland is on the floor is plus 17. Those numbers make sense because of how good Darius is, but I think the team has something with Darius that they don’t have when he’s not out there. And I’m not talking about his playmaking. I’m not talking about his ability to get to the basket. Like, yes, he has those things and those things matter greatly, but I think the Cavs play as a group with a level of joy and a level of belief that they don’t necessarily always have the ability to tap into when Darius Garland is not out there. Like, this is a team that, yes, because their goals are all postseason goals. um like this is a group that I think at times is going to look a little off because you know let’s face it and Darius was even asked after this game if playing the Pacers the team that eliminated them in the postseason last year evokes any emotion out of I mean it’s just like it’s kind of just another game like if they were to and this year they won’t because the Pacers are now two and 14 on the season but if they were to maybe say next year if this group from the Cavs is still together and sees the C or and sees the Pacers in the postseason, I think things would feel much different than just a regular playoff series. I don’t think that’s going to be like that in the regular season because I think that’s just not where the Cavs goals are as a group right now. But I think overall like they just have a a little bit more pop if that makes sense. Like there is a greater belief I think that you can sense around the team when Darius Garland not only when he’s on the floor but just like when he’s available because the Cavs I do think even though in this game they were without Sam Merrill they were without Jared Allen who did not play. Max Shre obviously has not played so far this year. Like the Cavs were healthier by getting Darius Garland back. They were healthier because they got Jaylen Tyson back and we’ll talk about him coming up in a little bit too. But I think if the Cavs had Sam available and Jared available and maybe even Max available, but not Darius, I don’t think they’d feel a hole. And having Darius back, even with some of those guys out, and those guys, don’t get me wrong, I find to be very important players. And I think internally the Cavs feel are very important players, too. But I felt like this was the night even though it wasn’t necessarily the night that the Cavs have been at their healthiest so far this year. But this was the night to me that they kind of felt whole like it kind of felt like okay now is sort of the time to go. And I did get this feeling to an extent in the game against Philadelphia. um you know was not at the game in Washington. So I can’t necessarily speak to that but and Miami didn’t necessarily feel like that even though that was actually the game for the first half that they were the healthiest in but I look at this and just say this team I think looks and feels so much different to observe when Darius Garland is part of it. Like I I know that his box score is what his box score is and he had 20 points, had seven assists, was five of 12 shooting, three of four from three, which the Cavs are going to Tonight felt like a night where and and they finished strong because they had a good shooting second half. It feels like the Cavs are a few missed shots away from just like really starting to click. And in the first half of this game, they did not shoot the basketball well at all from the outside, but there were a few possessions in the second half. and Kenny Atinson. He called them coaching highlight film possessions and those possessions really stood out and one of them ended with a DeAndre Hunter corner three-pointer. Actually, two of them might have ended with Hunter hitting a three. And it just feels like, okay, that’s that that magic the basketball seemed to have for the Cavs last year, particularly in the regular season and even in that series against Miami Heat in the first round. It feels like moments like that are starting to come back when Darius Garland’s available. And I just think it’s so important and you can’t put his impact I think into into box score numbers. I think he completely changes the identity of this group because for as good as Donovan Mitchell is and I right now if I were like if the if I had an MVP vote and if it happened you know what is it 17 games into the season Donovan Mitchell would be on my MVP ballot. He has been that good. He’s been so good. But I think that what Darius does that nobody else on the Cavs right now can do is he makes guys better in unique ways. I think that he has a way of lifting up this group in a way that like the way Donovan can lift up the group is come on get on my back. We’re going um I’m going to carry us there. And he is more than capable of doing that because he’s one of the best players in the world. Um, but I think the way Darius can lift up the group is he’s going to make other guys better. And it’s not to say Donovan doesn’t make others better, because I do think he does. But I think he does it in a different way. I think the way Darius makes other guys better is sort of by empowering them, right? Like I thought the start of the game, Evan Mobley’s first shift on Friday night was awesome. Yes, he missed two free throws and he missed a dunk, but other than that, he was flawless. And I know that that like sounds weird to say, but his first two minutes were bad and then the rest of it was really, really good. I thought in the first quarter he finished the night with 22 points and 12 rebounds, seven of 13 shoot, seven of 13 shooting and did make more free throws. He was seven of of 11 at the line on Friday night, which is a big improvement from four of 10 the other night. But I think that he is better and I think that he’s somebody that Darius Garland can lift up. And I I still do think that, you know, Donovan and Evan should be the pairing that we see together. And we did see that again on Friday night that I think it’s safe to say something the Cavs are going to shift back to. But I still think that when Darius is on the floor with Evan, he makes Evan better. And I think that’s a really good thing. I think he makes Donovan better. I think he makes DeAndre Hunter better. Like I am very excited to see when Darius is not on a minutes restriction because he played 26 and a half minutes in this game prior to it. Kenny said that he was not going to play anywhere above 30 and he checked out with I believe it was a minute 12 left in regulation which tells me the Cavs don’t necessarily care a ton about the differential for the NBA Cup because the final score did matter in this one. the fact that they won by 11 as opposed to 15 because that final group was outscored by four points in the last minute 12. But I look at this and say when Darius is back on, you know, a full minutes load and he could play 32 33 minutes in a game because he would have been at about 28 minutes had he played the rest of regulation. I look at that and say, well, there are some lineups that I think he can really make pop. like having him on the floor with DeAndre Hunter when Donovan and Darius check out I think can be a really good thing. I think that there are things that the Cavs are going to be able to do when Darius Garland is off of a minutes restriction and really truly back to being Darius Garland because he was good in this game. But it’s not like we haven’t seen better Darius Garland games. And one of the things that Kenny Atinson called Darius that really stuck out to me and it is the thing that has been missing from the Cavs when Garland hasn’t been available, he called him a paint invader, which is not a term I had used before, but it is a term I absolutely love. And Garland is not only able to get into the the lane into the key, whatever you want to call it, on his own accord by being able to use dribble penetration, but I think he does a really good job of finding guys in that area. I think he can find Evan in that area. Well, um I know that he can find Jared Allen both on the lob and in the pocket very well. The only guy that I think is comparable in that aspect to Darius Garland that the Cavs have is Lonzo Ball. And I think Lonzo is fantastic at it in terms of more so setting other guys up, but Darius is also able to get to the rim and finish in a way that Lonzo Ball really doesn’t have as part of his game at this point in his career. You do hope if you’re the Cavs, maybe you can bring a little bit more out of that as the season goes on. But I look overall at this at this effort from Darius Garland. I think there’s a lot to feel really good about if you’re the Cavs. Now, it’s just one game and Darius has to stay healthy. He made a point of saying, you know, made it out healthy of this game. When I when I asked him what it felt like to be out there, he made a point to say made it out alive. Basically, that’s a good sign. and the Cavs need him to keep getting through games and being healthy because if Darius Garland can stay healthy and if the rest of this group can stay healthy and I know that that is a big if considering some of the injury history but man it is really hard I think not to be very optimistic about what this group could look like given a full strength Darius Garland because I think a lot of these ancillary pieces that the Cavs added like Alonzo Ball like Jaylen Tyson who I’m going to stop talk about in a minute I know they didn’t add him but he is such a different player than he was 12 months ago go. We’ve not seen those guys with Darius Garland. And I think that he is going to be able to make lineups that don’t necessarily have Donovan and Evan Mobley in them so much better than anyone else is capable of. And I think that if you’re a Cavs fan, is one of the things to be most excited about. Now, I mentioned Jaylen Tyson as well because I thought he was very good in this game. He’s been very good all year. He returned from a concussion that he suffered the same day Darius Garland hurt his toe. He had a great first game back. We’ll talk about what he did and what he means to the Cavs next right here on Locked on Cavs. But first, today’s show brought to you by Quo. Thank you again for making today’s edition of Lock on Cavs your first listen. And thank you to those of you everydayers that make Lock on Cavs your first listen every single day. As I mentioned, Darius Garland was not the only guy the Cavs got back from injury in this one as Jaylen Tyson who had missed the previous five games with a concussion. He made his return and I thought he really made his presence felt as well. So, he finished the night with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists on six of seven shooting, two of three from deep. He has been one of the best three-point shooters for the Cavs this year, which on this roster, like when you look at Darius Garland, and maybe he’s unfair to bring up because he’s only played now four games, but Donovan Mitchell, uh, guy like Sam Merrill, guy like Lonzo Ball, who has had a lot of success shooting from beyond the arc in his career, DeAndre Hunter, Evan Mobley has been a 37% three-point shooter for the past couple of years. So when you look at this group of shooters that the Cavs have, you don’t necessarily expect and I certainly did not expect like I thought Jaylen’s role was going to be a lot of try and get to the basket, be a good passer. Some of the playmaking that he was able to showcase in college when he was at Cal that we’ve seen in summer league at times when he’s played with the Cavs there. I thought we would see more of that, but instead we’ve seen him kind of become a knockdown shooter. And the release, I think, does look much better than it did last year. I think it’s quicker. It’s still not the most aesthetically pleasing shot, but it goes in and that’s ultimately the only thing that matters. So, I think that he has a bit and he was in the starting lineup in this game in which Jared Allen did not play. And I think right now like he to me is the sixth man of this group. And I don’t know what things are going to look like if and when the Cavs ever get healthy. But it does feel like the things that he provides, the role player type things that Jaylen Tyson does so consistently are so important to what this group needs. And I and Kenny Atinson after this game too, I thought it was interesting because he talked about Jaylen having some of that playmaking ability, but it’s not what the Cavs need right now. And he is doing exactly what the group needs from him. He’s making open shots. He’s making the right play. Sometimes, yes, that is throwing the extra pass. It’s playing good defense. It’s rebounding. It’s creating havocs. Yes, sometimes there’s uh some silly fouls that I think the Cavs could do without and anybody could do without, but that is part of the learning process, but where Jaylen was 12 months ago compared to where Jaylen Tyson is now, I think is a humongous difference. And I think that is one of the best things about the start of this season for the Cavs because I do think at times the first 17 games have been a little frustrating. They’ve not looked their best. They’ve not shot the ball particularly well. They’ve had so many guys in and out of the lineup. Um I think this was I believe this may have been their 10th different starting lineup in this game. So we’ve seen so many different guys in and out of the lineup. But I do think what Jaylen Tyson has shown he can be over the start of this season is one of the best things to come out of it. And I asked before the game, I asked Kenny Atinson, “What has this group missed without Jaylen?” And I I think it was something I wanted to ask because the time Jaylen has missed has been the same exact time that Darius has missed. And because of how important Darius is to this group, so much of the focus has been on what they miss without Darius Garland. And that is the way it should be. Darius is a guy on a max contract. He’s a multi-time all-star. I personally think he is an allNBA caliber talent. I’m not saying he’s going to make an allNBA team. I know for sure he’s not going to make an allNBA team this year because he’s not going to play 65 games. But I look at that and say he is an AllNBA talent guy. like yes that is something that matters more that he’s out than Jaylen Tyson is out but I asked Kenny what have they missed without Jaylen and he said you know the joy that he brings and I think it is something that both he and Garland both bring that the Cavs can miss at times and Kenny said that this is a group Donovan is somebody that is very business-like and Evan Mobley is somebody that is very business-like but sometimes you need somebody that plays with a little bit more joy that can have a little bit more fun on the floor. And I think that this at times can be such a such a game where it’s we have to do this, we have to do this, we have to develop, we have to grow, we have to get better. Sometimes I think professional athletes can lose sight of having fun. And I don’t even know that that’s happened with this group, but I do think when Darius Garland is out there, when Jaylen Tyson is out there, I think that comes natural to the group when those guys are out there. And yeah, Jaylen has done a lot of really good stuff on the floor. Like he has played very well and I think it’s much easier to be somebody that brings that type of joy when you’re playing good basketball the way that he has through the games that he’s been playing so far this year. But I think that the Cavs have missed that. I I think that we’ve kind of underrated the impact that Jaylen Tyson has had. And yes, the box score stuff has for the most part been pretty good this year. He’s been a very good player for them. Um like there’s no other way to say that. But I think the other like the the non-quantifiable things that he’s brought to the team have been really really important as well. And I think when you look at that, it’s just like, yeah, this guy is somebody that they discovered they picked 20th overall in the draft. Didn’t necessarily have the most impactful rookie year, but right now, and listen, it’s early. This doesn’t mean that he’s going to be a great player forever, but right now Jaylen Tyson looks like somebody that can have a very big impact on the Cavs for a lot of years to come. He keeps doing things the right way. He has grown in all the ways the Cavs have asked him. He to me I think has been one of the biggest bright spots to the season. I think the Cavs get while this game is always going to be about well Darius Garland came back and the Cavs looked a lot better because of it. But don’t lose sight of the impact that I think Jaylen Tyson has on this group as well because the box score might not always show it kind of the same way the same way but different the way it is with Lonzo Ball. Like Lonzo I thought was great in this game. Did not score a point. Missed both shots that he took, but I thought he was awesome. Like he had a big impact. Jaylen can be like that as well. He’s going to score more than Lonzo because I I do think he’s a little bit of a better shooter certainly right now. Although I do think Lonzo is going to start to make shots at some point. I think he’s too good of a shooter not to. But I think the impact that Jaylen Tyson has on this group from an emotional standpoint is one that maybe we hadn’t necessarily realized. But I think it makes sense that this team looked so much better. And yes, I think more of it has to do with Darius Garland. But I think the fact that this team looks so much better on a night Jaylen Tyson was back isn’t nothing either. Oh yeah, Donovan Mitchell was really good in this game. We’ll talk about him next. and Evan Moley a little bit too right here on Locked on Cavs. But first, today’s show is brought to you by Prize Picks. You and I make decisions every single day, but on Prize Picks, being right can get you paid. Don’t miss any of the excitement this sports season. Whether you’re following the NFL, the NBA, or both, there’s no better time to jump in on the action. If you haven’t tried it yet, prize picks is the simplest way to play. Just pick more or less on at least two player stats, and if you get them right, you win. And it takes less than 60 seconds to make your lineup. And you could play anywhere that prize picks operates. That includes California, includes Texas, includes Georgia. For prize picks, maybe you want to play pick your favorite players. Football on Sunday, I don’t know, Patrick Mahomes. Basketball on Sunday, the Cavs play could be Donovan Mitchell. You can pick your favorite players to see how your predictions play out. Plus, they’ve got the new stacks feature. And here’s how it work. You can pick more on Donovan Mitchell’s points, on Donovan Mitchell’s made threes, on Donovan Mitchell’s assists, all in the same game. Plus, if one of your players does happen to leave early with an injury, the injury reboot will save your lineup from it being a loss. So, right now, you can download prize picks and use the code locked on NBA to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Again, that code is locked on NBA. And Donovan Mitchell was fantastic once again in this game. And it’s I almost feel bad saving a conversation about Donovan for the third segment. So he finished with 32 points on 11 of 22 shooting, just four of 11 from three. So not his greatest game from the outside, six of eight from the line, had nine rebounds, had five assists. Um just like he has been, I think, playing at such an elite level this year. And I thought this game on Friday night was was another example of this. Now, he did have four fouls. He also had five turnovers. So, it wasn’t like it was all positive. It’s not like this is anywhere, I think, even close to the best Donovan Mitchell game. But, it feels like every time the Cavs need a big play, Donovan is is coming through. Um, he’s been, I think, one of the best players in basketball so far this year, and as I said, if the MVP voting took place today, and if I had a vote, Donovan Mitchell wouldn’t necessarily be my pick to win the MVP, but he’d be on the ballot. like that speaks to I think the type of season that he’s had so far. Um and he has I think more than the Cavs would like. Needed to put the Cavs on his back and carry them at times and he didn’t need to do that tonight. The Cavs got a really wellbalanced scoring effort. Like Donovan had 32. I mentioned Darius had 20. Evan had 22. DeAndre Hunter had 20. So it was a very balanced effort in terms of scoring. But more frequently than the Cavs would like, Donovan has had to be the guy that just says, “Okay, get on my back. We’re gonna go. I’m I’m gonna carry us home.” And he has shown over and over and over again he’s very capable of doing that, but the Cavs don’t want him to have to do that. And he didn’t have to do that tonight. Like him having 32 points on 50% shooting is perfect. He’s not going to need to score 32 points. Like could he lead the league in scoring? Probably. He’s that type of talent. If he does, that’s not necessarily a very good thing for the Cavs. I think they would prefer that he probably be somewhere around 25 points a night and be able to spread out the wealth a little bit more. And I do think with Darius Garland back and you know, the Cavs have a backto-back this weekend, I would not anticipate Garland playing both ends of that. And with the way their schedule sets up, I do think there’s a way the Cavs can be strategic about when Garland plays and when Garland doesn’t play coming up. But they’ve needed Mitchell a lot this year. And he was really, really good in this game. Again, not one of his best games, but still really, really good. And I think that now we’re really going to start to see the Cavs and Donovan Mitchell get back to being the guy he was last year because he is, I think, a different basketball player than the guy he was last year. There’s been more on his shoulders. Like last year was, I think, so special for Donovan because he could take a step back and Darius could do a lot and Evan could do a lot and there’s been more on Evan’s shoulders. I thought this was a solid Evan Mobley performance. I would have liked a little bit more aggressiveness, particularly in the middle parts of the game. Thought the first quarter was good. Thought the fourth quarter was good. I thought the second and third quarters left a little bit to be desired. But overall, like I think the Cavs are going to start to look more like the cohesive group that we envision them looking like. Donovan Mitchell is not going to have to carry the load that he’s had to carry. And I think that’s going to be a very important thing because ultimately I look at this and say if Donovan has to do the things that he’s had to do through the first 16 games of the season for the most part, that’s not going to be the recipe for success long term for the Cavs. So the sooner that this group can start to look like the group it was last year, the better off the Cavs will be in that particular area. Like I look at this and I think this game against the Pacers and yes, this Pacers team is not great. The record’s two and 14. It’s not like they went out there and beat the Thunder on Friday night, but I do think that this is a Pacers team that plays hard. They got a lot of guys back like the starting five for Indie is not a bad group. Ben Shepard is okay. Pascal Seakum is a very good player. The Isaiah Jackson were rough. I thought Benedict Matherin’s a good player. Andrew Nehard’s a good player. Like they’ve got some good guys. They’re not a playoff team this year, but they’ve got some good players. And for the Cavs to come out in their first game back with Darius Garland in almost a couple weeks, I think you have to feel pretty good about where things stand right now with the Cavs. They are back in action on Sunday right here at Rocket Arena taking on the LA Clippers. They’ll look to move to 12 and six on the season, front end of a back-to-back where they will take on the Toronto Raptors the next night. Um, I would imagine one of Lonzo Ball or Darius Garland does not play on Sunday against the Clippers. And I would imagine if all comes out okay from this game that the other one plays on Monday night against the Toronto Raptors. So that’s going to do it for this Saturday edition of Lock on Cavs. As I said earlier, you can find the show anywhere you get your podcast. That means Apple, that means Spotify, that means anywhere else. Please make sure you’re subscribed. things I do think are going to start clicking for the Cavs and you’re gonna want to be right here at Lock on Cavs every single day for it. I’ll be back on Monday talking more about the Cleveland Cavaliers.
On Saturday’s edition of Locked On Cavs, Danny Cunningham discusses Darius Garland’s return to action after missing the previous five games with a toe injury. Garland finished with 20 points on the night but elevated the team’s joy and potential while he was on the floor. Danny also talked about Jaylon Tyson coming back into the fold after missing five games with a concussion and what he brings to the floor for Cleveland. Finally, Danny talks about Donovan Mitchell’s 30-point night and the weight he’s carried for Cleveland so far this season.

Danny wadup !!!! …let's go Cleveland !!! ….✌️ .
Hunter and Wade looked decent rebounding with Allen out. Hope it continues VS better competition.
