Short-handed Carolina Hurricanes win a wild one in Colorado; Can the Carolina Panthers upset the …

Are you not entertained? Today will be the answer. Yes. There was a group, a rock group, pop punk group by the name of Boys Like Girls. And in 2006, they wrote a song called The Great Escape. Throw it away. Forget yesterday will make the Great Escape. And that was last night I guess early this morning between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche in which pretty much everything went wrong after the first period of play where the Colorado Avalanche bent over and just took it from the Canes for 20 minutes. Score, score, score. Shorthanded goal by Seth Jarvis. Cleanup goals in which it chased the goalie. It’s Scott Wedgewood. He was miserable for the ABS and then guys got hurt and the ABS started scoring goals at ridiculous angles. Good morning Marty Nas. Yes, you are beloved and hated at the same time. You are playing some very good hockey right now for the Colorado Avalanche. But for the Canes this morning, they had to go to a shootout and Seth Jarvis bailed them out by burying the only shot in the shootout between both teams. So five to four is what it will go down in the books. The Carolina Hurricanes now doing pretty well on this road trip. Four and one with one more game to go coming up this weekend in Dallas. Yes, they’re running the gauntlet. But in a case of a night between Colorado and Carolina, one of those prove it games, right? Litmus tests, all those clever things that we like to say. The Hurricanes when they won, they also lost. and lost in a major way. Even before the game, losing Keandre Miller to an undisclosed whatever. The dude was on the ice for warm-ups and whatever it is, he couldn’t go, which now made you realize why they called up Joel Nestrom, which now made you realize why Jacob Slavven was on placed on IR retro to Tuesday. Maybe he’s coming back. That would be a great thing because now we are down a ton of defenseman. And not just defenseman at this point where Shawn Walker had to play 28 minutes on the ice last night. 28 28. We also lost Eric Robinson. We also lost Will Kerier. Head coach Rod Brendeore early this morning. Probably didn’t get much sleep even though the team won. Again, they won, but they also lost. Talking about uh well, here’s the injury update on the three guys I just mentioned. They’re going to be out both those guys, Robbie and Will for looks like extended period. So, you know, tonight was a tough night for the injuries. another miss too. I don’t know what’s going on there. That that could be a while. So, it’s uh it’s tough tough on the injury front right now. So, I believe at Lenovo Center Max and I know you had a game last night. Maybe that was your try out and they may have to call you up to start filling some roster spots because we are out of healthy bodies. Yeah. Well, they they got rid of the uh emergency backup goalie thing this year, but I don’t know if they have such a thing as emergency backup skater. Uh I’ve always said I’m ready to go though. And uh if they were watching the live barn tape from last night, they would be pretty impressed because I did have two goals and an assist and was a player of the game. So Oh, wow. There you go. I’m ready to go. But load up. Um I mean, yeah, it’s hard to think of a time in a game where so much can go wrong in terms of injuries and taking uh I mean took more than eight penalties, but gave Colorado eight power play opportunities in which they only went one for eight. It’s very surprising both these teams are so bad on the power play given how good they are. I’m pretty sure they’re both like bottom five in terms of uh power play percentage so far this season. Um but you know, you can’t say enough about how much they rallied, especially around Freddy Anderson who it’s not often you can say in a game where your team goes up four goals that the goalie probably won you the game, but that was that was the case last night for for the Canes. Freddy Anderson was awesome. I think he had something like 1.6 goals saved above expected and you never see the Hurricanes get bombarded with shots like that. Oh my god. It’s just their defensive system doesn’t allow it. So it was his career high with their or at least with the Canes the most that he’s faced. He was up for the task. He was very sharp. It might have been those classic looking pads because maybe they they they buff your stats a little bit because maybe they looked really sharp and he was playing really sharp to match uh to match the look and they were able to hold on despite you know they get all those goals in a flurry in the first period and then it’s just survival mode and they have to hang on and they they were able to get it done. So and in a shootout nonetheless too because that’s I basically felt like the game was over as soon as it went to a shootout cuz I don’t even really remember the last time they won in a shootout. And I’m sure it’s it’s happened. Yeah, they they definitely uh lose a majority of those over the last couple of seasons. So, it was good to see them actually get it done uh in the shootout. Yeah, Anderson got peppered. It was like Operation Desert Storm. The Allied forces just kept rolling into a rock and Anderson’s like, I don’t know what to do, man. I’m not I can’t do everything. The Nature’s goal, which led to the which was the third goal, was a ridiculous angle that he didn’t see. And Jordan Stall missed. I’m I’m calling him out. He was Jordan Stall had his back turned to Marty Nes like looking for the puck and nature said, “Yep, big guy’s not looking. I’m gonna I’m gonna shove this one short side. Just kind of squeak it in there.” And that’s what happened. And Seth Jarvis right now, can’t say enough about him for the Carolina Hurricanes. He uh he’s playing for a spot on team Canada. It’s pretty clear. He’s putting together his own highlight reels. The short-handed goal that he came down there, like he was quick to decide. And that’s the that’s the evolution of a Seth Jarvis, which you actually saw kind of the younger version of Seth Jarvis on a simpler play earlier in the game by Jackson Blake where Jackson Blake kind of walked the puck right up into the goalie’s face and then tried to make a shot. Seth Jarvis was already deing on the short-handed goal that he scored way before and he had Wedgewood fully committed and just knocked it by him. Like it was such a confident goal. It was such a confident goal. He’s so confident in his abilities. He’s playing for a spot on on team Canada. There’s no doubt about it. And he would he would earn one after today. Carolina Hurricanes don’t do themselves a lot of favors in this one. And besides the injuries, Max mentioned they the Avalanche spent a lot of time on the power play. Kale Mar played 28 minutes last night. Nathan McKinnon played 25 minutes. Of that time, 40% of their time on the ice was spent on the power play. How do you log 10 minutes on a power play and not do anything with it? That’s the crazy part. And for these two teams and then in early season, whatever it is, I’m like, we’re 10% in the season, folks. Like game eight is tomorrow for the Carolina Hurricanes. The ABS have played eight games now as well. Like there hopefully you figured it out at this point who your go-to guys are, who you can count on, and whatnot. The thing for the Canes is and it sucks is that they are going to have to have an open skate at some point because of all the injuries. Like Mark Janowski is just about to not just earn some time but be forced to like dude dude be the Mark Jang Gretzky that we saw when you were traded for as kind of the afterthought on deal day last season. Like be that guy. And now you’re going to really need some dudes to step up to absorb some minutes. Kerier was playing with stall and Martinook. Someone’s gonna have to slide into that role. Eric Robinson who scored again one of those Eric Robinson goals and I’m so happy to see him cash in. But again, it sucks that he’s hurt like went high side short a short side high on Wedgewood for that first goal. And I’m like, “Oh my goodness, here comes the flood.” And that’s what happened in that first period. It was four to one. Like you could have turned it off like in any other night. You should have been able to walk away from that game and went, “All right, I’m I’m good. It’s 10 o’clock. I can crawl into bed, maybe watch the end of the NFL game on Thursday night, watch the Chargers destroy Minnesota, maybe go watch some NBA, catch the start of that Golden State Denver craziness that happened last night.” But you couldn’t. You had to stay with it because all of a sudden the Canes started dropping like flies. And defensively, if you would say, hey, Sean Walker played 28 minutes, Mike Riley played 23 minutes out there against, oh, I don’t know, Gabriel Landiskog, Arturi Lechin, and Marty Nis. I’d be like, dude, they’re going to roll over you. Like, they should. And they pummeled him. Like the avalanche, it was relentless. like it never felt like Anderson had a chance to sit, which if you’re in a goalie’s shoes or goalie skates, sorry, goalie skates, a lot of better play comes when they see more action. And sometimes when they sit and don’t see shots for five minutes, six minutes, seven minutes, they’re like, “Okay, well, I’m just here. We’re playing great defense. I don’t have to do much.” Anderson had to do a ton last night. I really had to control my exploitive there. He had to do a ton. Don’t look at the four goals that were surrendered. Look at the rest of the night to where he was sliding and grabbing stuff and pushing things away and you didn’t get to hear the pad shots over the air here on 999 the fan. It was just Anderson just being Anderson. And when push came to shove finally in that shootout, he closed everybody out. Like you he closed out the right guys in that shootout. 999 the fan. Paul Ehander with you. Next up, Max Gorn here as well. 5-4 shootout win for the Carolina Hurricanes. 4 and one on the state fair road trip coming up tomorrow. Again, another test. I don’t know, Max. Who’s going to be healthy at this point? Because if I’m the Canes and again, they’re finally tuned athletes. Um I’m might be dragging a little bit. Yeah, I mean there’s I’m almost certain there will be a call up or two today or to see how quickly they can get uh some guys down from Chicago probably. I don’t I don’t know who they have played recently uh if they’re on the road or not. But would not be surprised to see the likes of Bradley Nado, Javani Smith, uh Jenowski more than likely probably going to draw into the lineup uh with all the injuries. Uh and hopefully they can get back to Raleigh without somebody else going down, especially on defense because now you’ve got basically half your night like opening night defensive core is now out with injuries right now. There are no pairings. Yeah. So, and I don’t I don’t know what they’re going to do. I I I think uh it’s kind of crazy to me at this point that Nikesh is still not getting a look on the power play with all these injuries. Uh I know that they wanted to ease him into it, but like desperate times call for desperate measures given how many guys are are going down and he obviously has, you know, you know, the the sky’s is the limit when it comes to his offensive upside on the blue line. So, I hopefully he’ll get some looks, but uh you know, maybe I don’t necessarily mind him getting a little bit sheltered if it means he doesn’t get injured because I mean, my goodness, it’s a lot uh to deal with. It speaks to the depth of this team that they were able to get the win and they still looked as good as they did despite all the injuries and all the penalties and everything like that. But just one more game and this road trip feels like it’s been going on for a month and finally they get to come back and play at home on Tuesday. So just got to finish strong tomorrow. Put up a good performance. Another familiar face on the other side uh as you know many Canes fans will remember from last year. There was a guy they traded for uh and then flipped at the deadline that plays for Dallas that signed a big contract there and is off to a pretty good start this year. So limiting him is going to be important. And uh I’m just I’m ready for the road trip to be over. I’m ready for them to be back home. I’m ready for some of these guys to get healthy. Hopefully the likes of Slavven and Goss Bear will be back sooner rather than later. And since they didn’t have to play on this road trip, they’ve had the time to kind of rest and recover. Gossip Bear, at least on the second half of the road trip, has had some time to be back in Raleigh and rehab. So, man, I mean, I I don’t remember a season where there’s been a a laundry list like this uh of injuries so early. No, but we’re worried about slow starts. Now, we’re worried about just getting started with just a healthy set a healthy crew out there. And in the Metro Division right now, again, it’s way early. We totally understand this is way early, but it’s fairly balanced across the board. There are no miserable teams in the Metro. And Carolina’s right there with Jersey and Pittsburgh when it comes to being at the top of the order here. And again, it’s early. I totally get that. But no one’s pulling away. And so, this is one of those times to where you get through this road trip if you’re the Carolina Hurricanes and then you start thinking to yourself, “All right, what’s where are our next tests coming?” And you get to come home and sleep in your own beds come Sunday night and Monday night before you bring Vegas right back in to Lenovo Center on Tuesday. I mean, that’s how quick it is for this season to turn around that fast. And the good news is for the Hurricanes, they’ve been off to a pretty good start. They’ve been certainly lifted by goalending play. And definitely Seth Jarvis has been stirring the drink pretty hard for this team. Like there’s no doubt about it. Yeah, he’s he’s been awesome. And he’s he’s tied for the league lead in goals. He’s got seven goals already in uh in seven games. And um he’s just continued that kind of trajectory. I mean, he’s always been good, but he just continues to get better. good on the defensive end, you know, had the short-handed goal uh in the first period last night and then uh got that shootout winner uh the only goal in the shootout uh which is a super valuable skill on this team where shootouts have been a bugaboo for about as long as I can remember. Uh he is just so so good. So hopefully he never gets added. Well, I mean, never is probably impossible because hockey is a very physical sport and a lot of people get hurt. But hopefully he stays healthy at least for this stretch where everybody’s dropping like flies. We need uh we need a couple warm bodies out there. Uh although he’s more than a warm body. He is uh been a leader of this team so far and you know should by all accounts continue to be um you know for the rest of this season and for a long time coming after that. Well, good news is uh they won’t have to fight Matt Rempy because Ryan Reeves kicked his ass last night for a big guy. He’s uh he’s not really that good of a fighter. It’s fine. If you’re gonna if you’re going to throw down with an enforcer, like one of the last enforcers in the league, you better come strong. Just saying. Uh go ahead and Google that video, by the way, when you get a chance. Yes, two guys who’ve played the same role and him and Ryan Reeves. One has clearly been in the league a lot longer. [Music] I’m Max Gordon with three things you need to know right now from 999 the fan. Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5 to4 in a shootout last night in a wild game that saw many players go down with injuries. DeAndre Miller was a late scratch with a lower body injury and William Kerry and Eric Robinson also departed midame with lower body ailments. The Canes finished their road trip tomorrow night in Dallas. The Los Angeles Chargers cruised to a 37-10 home win on Thursday night football against the Minnesota Vikings last night. Minnesota generated just 164 total yards on offense as quarterback Carson Went struggled to play through a left shoulder injury that caused him visible discomfort. A wild first week of the NBA season continued last night with some exciting oncourt drama. Aaron Gordon scored a career-high 50 points for the Nuggets on 17 of 21 shooting, but it wasn’t enough for the win as they were defeated in overtime by the Warriors thanks to 42 points from Steph Curry. Find these stories and more on wlportsfan.com and the 999 the fan app. But really, as we take a closer look at Sunday in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers look to get their fifth win of the season. Secure me a little bit of money because I have the Panthers over four and a half wins. So, hey, listen, I would have to stare at that all season like I had to stare at the Bryce Young. You were so worried about that after like week two, too. I was. I was a little bit kind of like I’m gonna have to stare at this damn thing all season long. I remember you kind of teased that I think it was on the show we were talking about. He was like uh oh man like I you know what I have it’s like I got the Panthers I thought you were going to say you had like over six and a half or seven and a half wins. I was like oh yeah that might be a sweat and then you said four and a half. I was like come on Paul like I they didn’t start out the best but they can get five wins. I mean I guess I don’t want to jinx it. I guess there’s always a possibility they could lose the next 10, but I don’t think they will. There’s There is always that possibility, depending on if Bryce Young can go. Bryce Young allegedly hobbled by an ankle sprain. Did not practice Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday. So, as we start pushing down this road and start uncovering the latest layer in the Carolina Panthers onion at quarterback, it feels like Andy Dalton’s going to get the start. And Andy Dalton, what he needs to do is just manage this football game. Buffalo in terms of Vegas 7 and 12 point favorite. That line has not moved. I’m getting a vibe right now of Carolina. And this is where my vibe sometimes gets thrown off, but I have to lean into it and believe it a little bit more. Last year when this team went and played Las Vegas in Las Vegas, it felt like they had all the momentum in their favor. And the same thing was that way for me later on in the season when it came to covering. It wasn’t necessarily wins, but covering. Like for example, coming off the bye-week last year after the win over the Giants, they played Kansas City and played them incredibly tight at home. That was a three-point game, right? Three-point game. Bryce Young had a couple of put started putting together games at that point. Same day, same deal with Tampa Bay, right? Covered in that one. Covered in Philadelphia, three in a row, but all ended in losses. I’ll remind you, they were big, big underdogs in all three of those games last year. Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia after they had won a couple of games. They had won two. Remember, they had beaten New Orleans and they had beaten the New York Giants this season. They’re coming off three consecutive wins. And the Panthers are looking for a fourth one against Josh Allen, who we all know and has been thrust in front of you like a gyrating man at a strip club. Or, you know, for the lady, that’s for the ladies out there. I’m just saying that Josh Allen is 7-0 following by weeks. like stuff a dollar in his in his pants, ladies. That’s what it is. But he’s taken Haley Stanfeld. Well done, Josh Allen. But now the Bills are kind of an average team. And they’ve played the same teams the Carolina Panthers have beat. Like it is a mirror image except you’re like, “Well, Bryce Young is not Josh Allen.” He’s not, but it doesn’t feel like Bryce Young’s going to play in this game. So we have Andy Dalton. Well, Andy Dalton’s not Josh Allen either, Paul. Yes, I get it. I totally understand that and I understand why many people are saying must win for the Bills and this is an upset if you’re the Carolina Panthers. And I want you to switch that role just a little bit after you compare everything. And I’ve been trying to lay out this conversation. Max has been trying to help you all out as well throughout this entire week that this is not an impossible hill to climb. This is not we are running uphill both ways to go to school in six feet of snow like your parents did back in the day which honestly was impossible but you believed it because they’re your parents and your parents never lied to you. Correct? They only exaggerate. Well, I’m not lying to you. I have never lied to you in the history of this program. I have never lied to you. And I believe that the Carolina Panthers have a very good shot of getting a fourth consecutive win if they stick to their game plan or if they stick to the game plan that we would want them to do. So because of that, it is now time for our Panthers Paw Print. Panthers Paw Print presented by Wake Orthopedics. Our keys to tomorrow’s win and keys to victory for the Carolina Panthers as they take on the Josh Allen le Buffalo Bills. And key number one, and no one will disagree with this one, and if you do, you’ve been hiding under a rock because you have not realized what is sitting behind center behind the quarterback in Rico Dattle. So the simple key is against an awful Bills defense against the run, run, Rico, run. Put the blinders on and let him go to work. It is simple as that. He is top five running back in the NFL right now, statistically speaking. And honestly, he’s got two brand new awards to prove it to you. Rico D’s the guy. He has to be the guy. He’s the guy. And the Bills give up over 150 yards a game on the ground. 150. And remember the same teams that have played the Panthers, the Dolphins, the Jets, the Saints, the Patriots, the Falcons, the same teams, and they have no run defense. And Carolina has a run defense. Ho ho ho. So, there’s the other thing. As Josh Allen tries to figure out who can actually throw the ball to, if he’s got anybody to throw the ball to, because it seems like everyone’s limping around Buffalo, this is where you got to believe just a little bit. Hope’s a dangerous mistress. I know. I say it all the time. If they can stop James Cook, they’ll stop Buffalo because Josh Allen does not play all 10 other positions on offense. Stop James Cook. It’s all about running at this point. It really is. Stop Cook. Make Allen run. That’s fine. Let’s get Allan tired. If Allen throws 55 passes in this game and he throws for 300 yards, that’s fine. As long as you come out on the other end. This is where I don’t see that. I see that number too big. I really do. And if you get mystique, if the Carolina Panthers fall back on the mystique of what Josh Allen can do, they’ve already lost. And I don’t think that’s going to be the mindset in that room. But that’s something to be very cautious of because you are concerned about star players. It happens all across sports in hockey, in basketball, in baseball, and certainly in football. It’s why they call that position on defense the spy, right? And it’s not really necessarily a spy. It’s just the dude that’s assigned to watch the certain player. And that certain player happens to be Josh Allen this week. Do I see the Panthers winning this football game? Absolutely. Absolutely. The fortune has to turn at some point. The tide has to turn at some point. 24-20 Panthers. You know, I as much as I want to agree with you, Paul, I feel like Bills win this one in like a heartbreaker like walk-off field goal. Panthers will be in it. like last year’s Kansas City and Tampa game, like every game they were close in down the stretch, you know. And it’s not that I don’t think the the Panthers have what it has to to to beat this team. Max, you are an ultimate Panthers guy. So, no, you you don’t have to couch by saying that. No. Yeah. And I and I pick them a lot. I honestly I picked them to win probably more often than I should, but it’s just the record of Buffalo coming off the by-week. Sean McDermott 8 and0 as a coach. You mentioned Josh Allen 7 and0 that right in front of you Matt. Yeah, it’s in, you know, it’s and it’s at home. It’s at Bank of America where they haven’t lost yet, but glittery thong. I think it’s going to be a good game, but I just I just think especially if Bryce Young’s not able to go and it’s no disrespect to Andy Dalton, but you know, he’s at the tail end of his career. And uh in the limited action we’ve seen him in the preseason and coming in in relief, it’s not like he’s done anything to really light it up on the on the stat sheet or or really on the eye test either. Uh I expect Lee Get is honestly probably going to have a pretty good game though because him and Andy Dalton seem to have a pretty good connection. Uh, but I think Buffalo probably squeaks it out. Something like 24 21. You’re right there with me. You’re right there with me. Let’s see if they can flip the script. Let’s see if fortune changes. And it does favor the bold. There’s no doubt about it. So that as they would say during the drive in the afternoon that is a real bold prediction.

Paul Ihander & Max Goren recap the Carolina Hurricanes’ wild 5-4 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche, in which multiple Canes went down with injuries. How will the shorthanded Hurricanes continue to fight through this adversity?
