All Signs Point To THIS…

All signs point to this. More misery for the Pelicans. It might be the same coach, but it looks like it’s the same old offense and same defense that’s keeping this team in a struggle position. We’re going to talk about the game last night against the Warriors inside this edition of Pelicans Digest. What’s good with it y’all? It’s your people Melo, the MIC, checking in with you live from New Orleans, man. That’s right. I’m checking in from the 504. was at the game last night with the Warriors. And I’ll be at the game tonight against the Thunder. And uh yeah, new coach, same time foolery. But uh thanks for checking in with me, man. Go ahead and hit that subscribe button if you haven’t done it yet. And make sure you let your folks know. This is where you get the best analysis, opinions, and more about the New Orleans Pelicans right here on Pelicans Digest. uh at was at the game last night, night one of the James Burgago era and all the concerns that I had before going in were confirmed last night. It’s the same old offense boy standing around at the three-point line. Now, I will say there was better uh situational rotational if that makes sense. I saw a little bit more of that. But on a night where Steph Curry is probably having one of the absolute worst games of his entire basketball career and the night that you in your building your team just can’t capitalize on it. I can’t I can’t and listen. I’m not going to say that Morago didn’t scheme this up correctly. I think he did from this perspective. You saw a little bit more too big play. You saw me seeing Makavik still get more minutes. But first, before I even carry on, I just want to take a moment and say thank you to Herb Jones Jr. last night. Thank you to Herb. Thank you, Herb. Cuz last night there was a nice crowd in the Smoothie King Center. And it wasn’t Warriors fans, it was Steph Curry fans. That nobody in that building probably could tell you half most of the fans in that couldn’t tell you where gold to stay at. They was just there for Steph Curry. and and Herb Jones put the clamps on her on Steph Curry. So, thank you Herb for sending them folks home sad last night. Nine points, three assists for Steph Curry. Herb Jones. Now, unfortunately, Herb didn’t do Jack was on the offensive side of the game, which we really needed him for. We needed him to do two. But at the same time, one of the reasons I this game I went into this game thinking that this is going to be one of the worst nights of basketball in New Orleans history. Turns out it was just a regular night of bad New Orleans basketball. It was just a regular night of bad New Orleans basketball. So, thank you to Herb Jones. Thank you. Thank you to Herb Jones for at least clamping down uh Steph and and keeping things uh keeping the fans quiet. All right. Thank you once again, Draymond and his foolishness. I know that’s what everybody’s talking about today. I I was there. I saw it. It it was kind of like it was kind of like whatever, man. You know, to to us in the building, every all the fans, it really it didn’t energize the fans. It didn’t do anything. It was kind of like, come on, man. What are we doing? Come on, let’s go. Let’s let’s get the game going, man. What What you holding us up for? So it was that whole Draymond thing was it was like whatever dude. Um but again the same issues continue to plague this team man and it was the issues we knew going in. This team continues to have an offense where they continue to run things from above the three-point line for some strange reason. And this is not a three-point shooting team. and they want to get into these games with these uh teams that shoot great three-pointers and have great three-point shooting and they can’t keep up. The Pel shot eight for 29 from three-point last night. Eight from 29. Eight three-pointers. Right in line of what I always say, they average about 8 to 10 three-pointers a night. And and here we are again. You won’t try to go and you won’t go try to go toe-to-toe with one of the great three-point shooting teams in this league. And for some reason, that’s why that’s why I said my concern continues to be the Morgo offense is that is that he I think he likes that that threepoint try to shoot the three the threepoint stuff and you don’t have the personnel for that. We don’t have the personnel for that. You have a better front court. I thought our inven last night was the front court as far as with Missy and and uh Makavic uh and then you did see some sets with that and you see them get some points with that, but they continue to insist. I don’t know why this team continues to insist on running Derek Queen at the five. Why? It was also very interesting that Kevon Looney didn’t get any minutes last night. Did anybody find that fascinating? Noticeable in my opinion. Even on a night where you got out rebounded by Golden State, you didn’t give Kal Looney any minutes last night. Interesting. But this fascination with putting playing DQ at the five, man. I even though he finished with a respectable line of nine, seven, six assists, two blocks, I I don’t understand why we continue insist on putting this kid at the five. Man, I I just don’t get it. And Morago, I thought, well, at least when I saw when he had Magavic and uh at the four and Missy at the five, I’m thinking, okay, and you and you kind of saw some offensive movement, better spacing with that. I’m thinking in my head, this is what we need to be running with Queen. Instead, we we put Queen at the five and leave him out there on an island most of the time. And teams are starting to figure that out with this kid. Yes, he has great ball and still and it’s and it’s still there, but it’s still teams are starting to figure that out with this kid. They’re starting to figure that out. Uh, the other thing I saw last night was Trey Murphy, you know, really trying to force situations instead of trying to find other cats. That’s why he was able to every time he got trapped into a double team, he kept trying to dribble through it and double and triple team, crash in the lane, try to crash into three or four guys. I mean, come on, dude. You got to move the ball. He’s got to move the ball. He’s got to become a better facilitator at this point. But it was it was again same old same old ain’t too much change. Ain’t too much change. This team is very much focused on the front court. When I continue to argue that your strength is in your I mean I’m sorry and this team continues to focus on the on the back court instead of the front court. I think you have a better advantage with a lot of these teams with your front court. But last and I I think that was evident last night. But again, even when you got Steph Curry shut down, you still got Moses Moody over here dropping 32. He dropped 21 of that in the first quarter because the zone the problem with this this Hells is zone defense is these guys don’t rotate well with his own defense. I continue to argue they play better manto man. Whenever Herb stayed on Steph all night long, which they did, it worked. But for some reason, people kept feeling like they had to go help like Queen and certain situations. When Steph did started getting some shots in late in the fourth quarter, it was because somebody would try to come help. Herb has locked this man down all night. Let let this man work. Trust Herb Jones. Okay? Just trust Herb Jones. Let that man do his job. But it it was again, it was just a regular regular bad night of basketball. Again, the only the only improvements I saw uh was again in situational rotational uh matchups, which leads me to my next point, which is I’m I ain’t going to lie, Joe Dumar’s, this is the coach Joe Dumar just put out about if we start losing the same way over and over again, that’s not improvement. That was really the one thing I talked to the coaching staff about, guys. We had to establish that we’re going to play hard every night before you can become anything in this league. You have to establish that first as a team. It was that judgment uh that led to a change more than identity, more than the offense or defense over the win loss record. Now, that’s what Joe Dumar said when he was asked uh before the game about the Willie Green firing. Well, guess what, Joe? You still lose in the same way. Now, did they play harder? I can say they did. I I I I can say they did they I I didn’t see too much of a throw in the towel situation last night. I I they did keep playing probably up until probably the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and then they threw in the towel. But but they did keep playing which I was saying before about I think they more energized under Morgo. But it’s the same old saying. It’s it’s still the same. It’s still the same. But I would I would hope that he looked at that game of him and said, “I can I need to run these two bigs more.” But I wish y’all would just let Derek Queen run at the four. Just let the kid run the four. A lot of Jose Alvarado minutes last night that I thought were kind of bad. Uh kind of intrigued with Bryce McGovern minutes though, but I’m kind of intrigued with Bryce McGawan minutes or should I say I was intrigued defensively. I was intrigued with Bryce McGawan’s minutes defensively, not offensively. I think he scored like eight points or something like that. But it it I was intrigued with Bryce McGawan’s minutes last night over Jordan Hawkins minutes anyway. But even though at the same time he put both of them on the floor at the same time, I would I would prefer going him with him over Peavey was a choice. I don’t know if he if he doesn’t believe in heavy as far as his scoring capabilities yet because again this is this is supposedly an offensive coach. He’s trying to build up something offensively. But Bryce McGawan I think respectfully did well in his minutes defensively cuz again Moses Moody had 32. Most of that came in the in the first quarter. 21 of that came in the first quarter. Uh after that they were able to keep them pretty much neutralized. But at the same time, the Pelicans couldn’t score and couldn’t capitalize because of the same anemic offense that this team runs. No one cuts, no one runs, no one sets quality picks. It’s just stand around the three-point line. It was the same with that last night. I was I I’m I’m surprised I still got my voice. I had to check myself because I literally was screaming out at moments, move around. I was literally screaming at from my seat. move around. But no, they stand around, watch whoever’s got the ball, and we’ll just sit here at the three-point line and we’ll see what happens. But hopefully tonight we’ll see something different. I doubt it because the world champions Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Thunder are in the city. I’m in the city, too. I’m going to be at the Smooth King Center tonight. What are your thoughts of all on night one of the James Burggo era? Yes, we still got 70 more games to go. Yes, I think he’s still possibly evaluating certain situations that he will want to see in certain situations, but who knows, man. I there was some slight improvement. I will say that there was some slight improvement, but it’s not all the way there yet. We’ll see though, man. What are your thoughts, though? Clap back with your thoughts. 1. Golden state shooting coach needs a raise. Our shooting coach needs to be fired. We not winning nothing if basketball players don't learn consistently how to put the ball in the roof. I really don't understand the shhoting of our team. But if all they can make is layups, then they better learn to penetrate Better and getting the ball to the bigs. 3 pointers are so inconsistent they must be this teams last result.

  2. I’d run a 9 man rotation. Poole herb trey zion & karlo. With alvarado mcgowens bey & missi. Thats it. Focus on defense. offense is not our thing we lack talent

  3. That game last night was bad but wasn’t on coaching at all it’s the players the poor defense is because no communicates on D. Also the players put themselves in bad fast break situations where they didn’t have the numbers and attacked the rim with more defenders. The only good was Herb Jones completely shut down Steph Curry. More of the problem we have to realize is the players themselves to much iso ball, to slow development of offense earlier in the shot clock and a lot poor shoot selections. What was frustrating as defenders were closing down the paint well the player didn’t look for the open guy tried to attack the rim with to many defenders looking for calls case in point Trey beating his defender could have done two things shot a midrange shot which can cause your defender to foul you or pass to the open guy because they had 3 defenders there but instead he gets stripped and complains about not getting the call which lead to a easy score for the Warriors

  4. Like i kept saying, Willie wasnt the problem (nor the solution really) he was mediocre. Not bad. Not good but the coach is an easy person to blame.

The biggest issue is that the team is trash. Players have to play pure and simple. Most of our money is sittin on the bench so there is only so much that minimum value guys can do. Also, Pels fans really are somethin haha. Jake Madison has been complaining about not enough 3s for years and he has 100% influenced team decisions (see the nonsensical Valencunias and Ingram trades) but Mel always wants less 3s. Boot Krewe Media just complains lol they dont care

  5. Because Queen is definitely a 5… not athletic enough to play the 4 really… he has the same skills has Jokic and he needs to develop… I think the Queen take is a bad one

  6. Trey cannot drive, do not want to pass, and cannot shoot jumper He only good in threes and FT. We will keep losing if he will not change. Poole is better than him. I suggest trade Murphy with the one can drive to the ring and who is willing to pass if got doubled.

  7. Not saying Ingram is perfect, but this is what the fans wanted . They wanted Trey to take ingrams place , when in reality, Trey can’t run an offense.

  8. JB hasn't had enough time yet to do much of anything, so it's too premature to draw any conclusions. Once they get a little break between games he'll be able to do more.

  9. Why is this assistant Coach acting like he has to get to know the players he has to see what they can do blah blah He has been watching them play for years and suddenly now he has to see what they can do? Something smells fishy

  10. Despite what most ppl think, JB hasn’t implemented his offense yet. I would wait until maybe 20 more games to get a true evaluation. But even then, he’s kind of in a bad spot since these things are taught and drilled in training camp and preseason.
