Dude would rather take down his countrymen than join him! Sounds like the kind of attitude that belongs in Milwaukee. Yeah, I know it won’t happen but it would be cool.

  1. Would be cool, but don’t get your hopes up. Who knows though? The brief time we were in the NLCS might be enough exposure to the Japanese for this guy to at least consider.

  2. I watched him pitch for Seibu for a couple years on the Pacific League broadcast for free on Roku. He’s really fun to watch. I think Jesus Aguilar was playing for the same team at the time too. I doubt the Brewers would have an immediate spot for him with the current rotation coming together, but I think he’d definitely fit in well with the Brewers players and organization with a mind set like that!

  3. He is projected to get a 6-year $150 million contract so unfortunately I think he’s out of the Brewers price range

  4. >”If there were another Japanese player on the same team, I could just ask them about anything, right?” Imai said. “But that’s actually not what I’m looking for. In a way, I want to experience that sense of survival. When I come face-to-face with cultural differences, I want to see how I can overcome them on my own — that’s part of what I’m excited about.”

Milwaukee sounds right up his alley.

  5. How’s his stuff gonna age versus, say, a Woody type? If his velocity drops towards the end of like a 5 year deal, is that going to be something that’s problematic?

See, that’s my big concern about Freddy: He still is more of a thrower than a pitcher, and an inefficient one at that given his pitch counts and relative lack of going deeper than 5 innings on average. Is he going to figure it out for when his velocity inevitably drops?

Woody is clearly a pitcher. Those types can lose a few ticks off the heater and still be very effective. Those types also age much better than throwers.

  6. If the Brewers like this guy…they would definitely take a run at him. Remember…last year the Brewers were in on Sasaki. I think the Brewers made his final list of 6-8 teams. Of course he was Dodgers all the way…but my point is the Brewers definitely had interest.
I get the Dodgers are attractive to Japanese players because 1) money and 2) now it’s becoming a Japanese clubhouse…but I would think if the Japanese pitchers and their agents did their due diligence they would see that no other team has developed pitchers like the Brewes have in the last 6-8 years. I don’t think the Dodgers handled Sasaki well at all last year…he struggled big time starting…arm was tired but also they just kinda threw him out there. Then he comes back for playoffs and all is forgotten because he had 3 good appearances in relief. I’m pretty sure when they posted for him they thought he would be dominate starting and right away. What the Brewers would have done is simplify his arsenal a bit and made sure he was building up at a proper pace..not rushing him like the Dodgers did.
I think if the Brewers have interest in this guy…they have a real shot. Remember..the Japanese fan base got to see a lot of Murphy’s press conferences before Dodger games…and he had a great time with the Japanese press.
