Jets Receivers Passing the Test, Need More From Tanner Engstrand | New York Jets News
What is going on, Jet fans? Matt Ori back with another video on this Monday morning. Wanted to come on and talk to you guys about the New York Jets offense. Right, we talked about how after the Jets were making the change at quarterback, we were going to use this time to evaluate the offense and it’s only been one game, but I wanted to talk about kind of just update where we are in this process of looking at this offense. Then uh we’re going to start by talking about it again this week. There are still six more games left on the season. Uh so we’ll see how things go over the remaining six games. We may eventually get some Brady Cook action. Uh Tyrod is a quarterback who’s had some injury problems in his career. So we might even if uh Brady Cook isn’t ready, you might have to go back to uh Justin Fields. But let’s just take a look at this game individually. I wanted to talk about the Jets two newest wide receivers and uh John Mechy is absolutely passing the test so far through two games. Uh he had six catches for 65 yards and a touchdown on seven targets in this game. Uh over the first two games with the New York Jets, 10 catches for uh 113 yards and two touchdowns. Touchdowns in back-to-back games without Garrett Wilson. Uh, look, the Jets passing offense in general in a very tough spot without their number one receiver, Garrett Wilson. Uh, John Mechy is absolutely rising to the occasion right now. Am I saying that he’s a a star wide receiver and someone who is your wide receiver too behind Garrett Wilson? No. Let’s not get crazy here. But can he be a functioning piece in your offense, a resigned candidate to be your slot receiver? I think absolutely. I think there is certainly a world where next year the Jets go into it with John Mechy in the slot, a another addition at wide receiver on the outside along with Garrett Wilson. And then that leaves AD Mitchell who has two more years under contract. He helped the Jets stretch the field a little bit in this game. Two catches for 42 yards. Consistency is going to be the biggest thing with him. Can he find that consistency? He hasn’t been able to do it through two years in the NFL. Um he had some drop issues and just not on the same page uh with Justin Fields a little bit in that game which was his first game with the New York Jets. Um it might take a little bit to build up that uh chemistry with the quarterback. Uh but can he be a useful player? Again, like I’m not even saying that AD Mitchell has to be your number two wide receiver for this trade to make sense for the Jets. You’re taking a flyer on a guy who was a second, you know, round pick. Is there a world next year again where I mentioned Wilson and an addition and John Mechy, but then you add in uh Ady Mitchell and Aryan Smith. Is that okay for your top five guys? Maybe you add one more wide receiver. You have Isaiah Williams as your sixth receiver uh and returner. that suddenly looks a lot better than when you were touting out Wilson, Josh Reynolds, Alan Lazard as your top three. And it depends on what, you know, rookie you get if you go with a a pick in the first round or uh if they go the veteran route, whatever, right? Like TBD on who they fill that in with. But uh this wide receiver room has turned around a a great deal in a very short amount of time. Is it 100% complete? No, it’s not. But we have seen some noticeable change over the last few weeks. Okay. Want to talk some Tanner Angstrand who I thought was up and down in this game. There’s some things that Tanner Angstrand has done just this year in general that I’ve liked and some things that um I haven’t liked as much. Uh something that I I think will be a criticism um just overall is they need to get Bree Hall more involved in the passing game. He had four catches for 75 yards. Uh, and he needs to have three to five catches every week. And there was before this game a fivegame stretch where he h where he had two catches or less in each of those games. That there are very few running backs who can do what he can do as a pass catcher. And I know he had the fumble. Uh he was fighting for extra yardage and unfortunately fumbled inside the five and that completely changed the momentum of the game. The Jets were down 10. uh if they score a touchdown there, they make it a three-point game. Uh unfortunately, we know what happens, right? There was the fumble and that pretty much sealed it for for the Jets and they would lose 23 uh to 10 in that spot, right? But Bree is a weapon and I think he needs to continue to be utilized in the passing game, especially without Garrett Wilson. Man, we’re talking about, you know, funneling targets to AD Mitchell and John Mechy with which is good. like both those guys had, you know, six plus, I think it was seven a pop, uh, targets-wise, there’s no reason that Bree Hall shouldn’t have, you know, like I said, maybe five targets there. Mason Taylor, too, get him involved in the offense. Uh, something else that frustrates me with Tanner Angstrand is kind of the run to set up going for it on fourth down. Like there was the Isaiah Davis third and long draw plays. It’s becoming too predictable. Like I get it. You can catch a team sleeping that way, but when you do it more often than not, I I think it you kind of lose your luster there. Uh and I think we’re kind of getting too much Isaiah Davis on third and fourth down. Like I get he’s better in pass pro than Bree Hall, but I don’t think you could afford to take one of your best offensive weapons. I would say your best offensive weapon without Garrett Wilson off the field on third and fourth down. If you want to have the better pass pro, instead of going four wide, go with two running backs. Instead of going three wide, go with two running backs and keep Mason Taylor on the on the field as the tight end. Uh I I just I don’t think you could afford to continue to do that with Bree Hall. Um, and again, I understand from the pest protection perspective why you would want to keep a guy like Isaiah or put a guy like Isaiah Davis out there on the field, but again, you’re I think you’re limiting what you can do. And speaking of going for it on fourth down, the the fourth down call that the Jets decided to go for it on fourth and two from their own 42. I really don’t have issue with Aaron Glenn going for it. I know um many of Jet fans publicly, right? Like uh Mike Greenberg uh did not understand that decision at all and was saying that it, you know, the defense was playing well. You could have punted it down the field and all that. You’re two and eight. I don’t think you have much of a chance to win on the road in Baltimore if you’re going to play conservative that way. and Aaron Glenn said after the game, “I trust my defense.” So, going for it in that spot, he trusted his defense to to get off the field. It it didn’t work. But again, I would rather this coach show signs of being more aggressive than more conservative in a already lost season, right? Like what? So, you have you have Austin McNamera out there and you punt. Okay, fine. But that’s in a way give up. You’re playing not to lose that way. The Jets were in that spot, in my opinion, playing to to win and it didn’t work out, right? It’s not going to have a 100% hit rate, but I’d rather them go down swinging against a team that is significantly better than them. Um, and look on that, honestly, I did not think that fourth and two play call was honestly that bad um from Tener Inkstrand. You know, they came out, they they threw. And look, I’m not going to pretend that I know how Tyrod’s progressions were supposed to go on that play. I’m not in the team meetings. I’m not, you know, going to pretend that I know, oh, like his he was just on his first read the whole time and, you know, he was had to throw it to John Mchi no matter what. However, he made it very obvious where he was going with the ball, right? like he his feet were set up to the right and his eyes were to the right and Meti was pretty much the only player out over there and he throws a back shoulder ball on fourth and two that’s incomplete and like that’s a very low percentage play and if you watch the play develop AD Mitchell’s like throws his hands up in frustration a little bit that the ball wasn’t going his way and not in a at least my interpretation of it not in a like diva throw me the ball kind of way but he was about to be wide open. They had uh Mitchell running an inbreaking route with Mason Taylor kind of going out into the flat on the left side and AD Mitchell got his defender turned around and starts cutting towards the middle of the field as the linebacker is you know going out into the flat uh with Mason Taylor. So that part of the design it worked wonders, right? You had the a really good route from Mitchell gets himself open. you take the linebacker out of the play with Mason Taylor going into the flat on the left side. Uh and they could have picked up, you know, the first down. It It wasn’t a crazy deep play. It was, you know, a 5-yard in route. It was, you know, quick hitter kind of thing. Um but again, it was kind of predetermined where Tyrod was going. And I don’t know if that was Tyrod just saying, you know, John Mety’s been my best receiver today. I trust him to make a play. or if that was like this is your only read on the play. You know what I mean? Like again, I don’t want to say definitively that we should know how the play, you know, from the passing perspective is supposed to go. That’s unfair. There’s no way to really know that. But point being, the play design I thought was a good one. So, uh, kind of up and down from Tanner Angstrand. I think there’s some things to to like about him, but there definitely is room for improvement from Tanner Angstrand. Uh, as far as the passing offense goes in general, look, Tyrod wasn’t perfect. He played pretty much exact exactly how I’d expect a backup quarterback to play. Offense had 204 passing yards. Over the previous five games, the Jets were sitting at -10, 139, 248, 42, and 105. The Bengals game was the outlier. And honestly, their highest output of the season at 248 passing yards. Um, and that’s against one of the league’s worst defenses. Now that they had a great great great offensive showing, uh they had like 500 yards of offense in that game, which was uh truly awesome. Uh but outside of that, look, in the other four games leading up to this one, they they really struggled, man, against New England, 105. Um you know, -10 against Denver. Carolina got 139 in a lot of that game in the second half. Uh and then 42 against Cleveland in a win. They found a way to win the game, but uh and 42 or 41 of those 42 yards came on a a screen pass to to Bree Hall, which is just again kind of shocking, but um we’ll see how the passing offense kind of progresses over the remaining six games. I’m not saying that like and not that I was ever saying that Tyrod Taylor was going to be the long-term answer for the Jets, but I think they kind of just needed to see a different look. Um they only scored 10 points, which clearly isn’t enough. They did have a fumble inside the the 5 yardd line and should have gotten more points on the board and this probably should have been like a 20-7 kind of game instead of a 23-10 kind of game. But whatever, you know, the Jets are Jets are 2-9. Let’s not go nuts one way or the other over this game. U but that’s kind of where I’m at with the offense. Im sorry but tanner is awful, you pay a qb 30 million dollars and you done none of what he does well, the fact that hes called like 8 designed runs all year is all you need to know about it, the play calls stink no matter whos at qb, hes not ready to be an oc.
It’s funny how Matt is now forced to give analysis of this team and can’t just tell “Fields sucks” after every game and is finally realizing the issues with this team run way deeper than Fields. Only took him 12 weeks.
Engstrands failing as a OC.
I really like metchie he seems like a pros pro. Could we have possibly found 2 receivers behind Garrett Wilson, that's a silver lining. Also I think we over value tyrod Taylor and think he is better than he is maybe. Both him and fields stink as passers so we're not going to get this full evaluation we keep talking about
That 4th and 2 was an awful decision. Coaches always say “my job is to put players in the best position to be successful.” He screwed the defense and put them in a terrible situation that turned the game.
He's doing fine with the talent he's been given
How much of the problem of Breece not getting enough catches was Justin Fields just not going through progressions and getting to the check down or not knowing quick enough that the play down the field wasn't going to work and the check down to Breece quickly in space was the best play? I agree they should throw him more screens though
Fields just could not operate an offense. Tyrod is a professional, nothing great, but he knows how to do his job.
First off congratulations on this weekend I feel Matt the Darren mougey has done a fantastic job bringing in all this talent during the season
CONGRATS MATT🎉🎉🎉🎉
Sounds like your Irish. Maybe you should change your team to the other green team The Eagles. 😂
Congrats Matt
Congratulation, Matt!🎉
Congrats Matt..I just hyped your video ❤❤🎉🎉😊😊
Breece is like Freeman McNeil..enough touches and he'll break one…Freeman fumbled a little too.Freeman is one of my favorite Jets 😍 ❤️.
Fans like to make decisions on whether a decision was good or not based on the outcome, sports is just a very hindsight driven entity. If that 4th and 2 was converted, some people would be talking about the 'gutsy' call from Aaron Glenn, but mostly nobody would be saying anything.
Look at the 2 point conversion from a few weeks ago that led to the win over the Bengals. If we didn't get that 2 point conversion and dropped that game, people would be talking about it like it was a stupid choice. But it worked, so it was 'gutsy'. Same thing yesterday – If that 4th down converted, nobody would be out here saying 'The Jets are making risky calls' in complaint. But it didn't. So down rains the criticism from the masses.
I think if breece doesn’t feel like he has to do everything and score there maybe he goes down earlier. I feel like he just went too hard thinking he was their only chance. (He was)
funny how now it has something to do with Tanner and his play calling but anything with Fields involved was all Fields fault. Fields it's wrs wide won't throw now it's I'm not sure of the QB read progression lol so lame. Fields has his issues without having more fabricated for him.
Wait AD will blow your mind! Drops can be fixed. Have you see how open he gets. He was amazing in college. Just wait. Love the haters with AD. Worst he is your 4 and will be the best 4 in football. I’m trying to be nice to you. Love your coverage but you analyze of players isn’t great to be honest. You need to do a video on all the players you wanted the jets to draft and see where they are at.
it's more than offensive line 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Yup…so many more pressing needs than WR in 1st rd next year…QB/LB/S (or maybe you move Stephens to safety and draft Mansoor? Or you roll with AZ and Stiggers, JBJ and sign a low end CB2 in free agency to get in the mix…Mansoor looks the part btw, if Reese and Downs are gone, and we don't like the QB's this draft…also would consider drafting a guard in the 2nd (extending Breece, tagging AVT, Myers offer like 2yr5mil and Tipp starting at C).
Need to sign a legit LB and draft one first 2 rds this year. Also sign a legit DE, can wait til the 4th to draft one to be DE4. Sign a legit swing tackle and TE2. No need to spend big money or premium pick on WR2, can sign a 1yr vet think Adam Thielen/Hunter Renfroe 2 years ago type guy next year, 1 yr 6-8 mil
Congratulations Matt
How are we still talking about breece needing to be in the passing game week after week. I know Hackett is a moron but engstram has to see this…..RIGHT???
Engstrom is learning..needs time to grow.
I love Tanner play calling yea it could be better but I think for his first time he's done Good
Huh?!🤔 Yep Mougey bringing in talent before exiting talent … look for Garrett to get traded post season.
