Is The Steelers Season Officially Cooked?

There’s really not much to say, but your boy Deak’s got to make a dollar. Big Deak news. Yeah. Like honestly, what am I going to say new for today’s show? It’s going to just be the same old And that’s exactly what you’re hearing from the Steeler players and yesterday’s postgame interviews. What’s the most frustrating part about this right now? Probably say losing. [Music] When you look at you guys have a two and a half game lead in the division. Baltimore is now tied with you guys. What’s the mindset of the last month and a half knowing that your margin player appears to be shrinking? Does it feel like the season does it feel like the season is getting away from you guys at all at the stretch? Boards were converted or either converted from second and long. So, same story, man. Got to get off the field. We have a lot of things that need to be fixed, fixed quickly, and we need playing our best football at this stretch of the season and we need to get better and get better quick. Uh I think we just got to be better honestly. Um I think sometimes it was schematic issues that we had. Um it’s kind of hard, you know, for two guys that’s underneath defenders to try to guard two routes. Um you know, that’s overhanging off the hashes and stuff. As much as you know it, you trying to play the wrong try to get back to a bang or whatever it is. It’s hard to do that in days. It’s tough. You pick over three number four versus anything that surprised you guys. No. Morale’s down. Look defeated saying we got to play better, execute better. Schemes aren’t good enough. We can’t keep doing the same expecting different results. How many times have we been saying this? how many times it’s just tiring. It’s numbing. And this is something that’s been a consistent theme within this year where we’re just saying after some of these losses, I’m numb to it. I I I don’t even care. I I think that’s the saddest part of all this right now with the Steelers franchise and the state of the team. like yesterday’s loss, I’m just like I I Yeah, I don’t even care. It is what it is. I like this is where we’re at. Like like it’s it’s just what what what do they say the uh like stages of grief are? You know, you go through all these different stages. I think Steeler fans have gone through a ton of different stages over the last however many years of trying to comprehend what the Steelers are. You know, there’s there’s anger. They’re saying that, “Oh, wait. No, we’re we’re actually not that bad or like we’re in a good spot. It’s just it’s going to get better next year. We’re rebuilding. It’s the quarterback. It’s the coordinators.” I I think we’re just at acceptance right now with with Mike Tomman at the helm, with the structure, the coaching staff, all that stuff the way that it is. I’m not expecting anything different. I hope it changes. I hope we go undefeated the rest of the season and we win a Super Bowl. But what makes you think otherwise based off how this team has been playing this year? What makes you think otherwise? It’s you get a decent win here and there, you feel like you have momentum, and just like that, you lose a couple games to bring your record back closer to 500, but just not all the way 500. Maybe a win or two above 500 at all times. And we’re in that spot right now, six and five. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if we beat the Bills, but then we lose some other games as the season goes on and our final record ends up being nine and eight. Do we make the playoffs because of maybe an AFC North tiebreaker or something? We we win the division because of how slow the Ravens started and maybe we win one or two of these games against them. That could be a path. Or we sneak in as like the seven seed because of tiebreers. Or we just miss the playoffs. Like that’s that’s really it because what are we going to do in the playoffs? I actually think this was a great take. I saw this on Twitter by Adam Crowley on 937 the fan. And this was something I think I was trying to get at yesterday in my postgame report. I couldn’t really put the words right. But that’s that’s the sad part about this in a way is when you look around the league and see how inconsistent a bunch of these other teams are that are competing for playoff spots in the AFC and that we would kind of consider teams that would have a chance from the outside looking in. You think to yourself, could could the Steelers string two or three games together where they actually do some good I don’t know if that’s possible, but that’s why it’s it’s like based off reality, based off the facts. We can’t like completely write off the season. But I’m just numb to it. I I can’t really expect different results. I’m just going into these games on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and I don’t really have too much emotion. I’m just watching the game and however the game plays out, I’ll come on here on Sunday after the game on Monday and break down what I saw. But in terms of meaningful stuff with this team and trying to be legit contenders, I I don’t know I don’t know if there’s anything you could really hang your hat on based off what we’ve seen. Cuz at least if you were bad, you could get a quarterback. if you were good, well, no one would care because you’d actually have a shot. No, they’re where they always are, which is in the middle. And that’s because they are as inconsistent a football team as you will find in a league that I think is known for its inconsistent teams. And even in yesterday’s game within it, you see a bunch of the same pop up that we’ve consistently complained about with the defense and the soft coverages and just letting the offense try to make mistakes and not really getting after it. Now, we did have the strip sack for a touchdown, but I mean, this screenshot’s insane. It’s third and five at the 41. Dan Arlos, he’s calling it out on Twitter. Look, like we’re giving them a wideopen first down with with how far back our zones are. Like what is that? What is that? Passing the ball over the middle. That’s something we’ve also talked about with the offense, how we’re not really dynamic enough. Saw that on display yesterday. It’s like, bro, how many times do we got to see the same story with all these different characters? It’s crazy, man. Definition of insanity, doing the same thing, expecting different results. Yeah. Um, what else is there to say? I don’t know. I mean, I saw some crazy ass picking stats out there where he has either more receiving yards, depending on the stat you look at, either more receiving yards or just as many receiving yards as all of the Steelers receivers this season. Insane. Pickins in yesterday’s game had more receiving yard, more production than DK Metaf has had over the last like three or four games. Something’s off, man. Something’s off. We let too many of these good players go because this used to not be the case. Not be the case where you would let a good player go or you would let players go maybe underachieving and they wouldn’t do anything elsewhere, but you’re seeing it far too often. Pickings, he’s flourishing elsewhere with the Cowboys. Kevin Dawson, we don’t know how to utilize him here. We’re playing him out of position. Goes to the Rams. All of a sudden, Shawn McVey turns him into a Pro Bowl or AllP Pro, one of the best guards in the league. They they put him at his rightful position. Dante Jackson having a pretty damn good year with the Chargers. And he wasn’t that bad for us last year. I think he was just a little injured too much. He wasn’t perfect, but we saw something in his game where we felt like it was better to move off of him and bring in a Darius Lelay. We felt like that was an upgrade. You see Spain balling out in his post Steeler stops with the Raiders and the Patriots making splash turnovers being named captain 100 plus tackles every season. Javon Hargrave I mean that one came down to like a Stefon to it versus Hargrave decision but I’m sure we could have made the numbers work to make sure we kept Harrave. Hargrave becomes Pro Bowl allpro type of dude. Like dude I don’t know man I don’t know you’re seeing too much of this stuff. We move off of players, try to bring in new names, try to make it a little bit more flashier, bigger names, guys with resumes, veterans, maybe a little bit past their prime, and it works out worse. So, who does that fall back on? Like, no matter what way you want to spin it, you want to talk about the personnel, the roster, the schemes, the coaching staff, whatever it is, Tom’s the head coach. Tom was the head coach. A lot of this or if not all of it ultimately goes back on him somehow someway, right? Because he’s been at the head of all this for the last seven, eight years and all these different changes. He’s the one that’s allowing the roster changes to happen, right? Like Omar Khan ain’t making these moves unless Tomlin gives him the okay. What else is there to say? This has been pretty much a broken record type of show. You could probably put this show uh after any of these losses and it would make sense. Seriously, you could probably put this exact show after um what our loss against the Packers and you’d be like, “Yeah, okay. Dee watched that game.” Dee watched the Packers game. After the uh whatchamacall what was the one after the Packers game that we lost? Uh the Chargers game say the same thing, right? Just inconsistency. Offense, defense, coaching, getting out coached, all this stuff. It’s same thing, different day. Same thing, different day. And the weird part, I didn’t even think we played that bad yesterday. I really didn’t. I didn’t think we played that bad, but I thought we were pretty untimely. And you know, when you’re paying the defense like you are, no matter how how much you want to slice it with, uh, we had a couple turnovers, put the defense in a tough spot, you got to get stops, at least be holding him to a field goal based off what we’re paying you guys and what the expectations are. And as I said yesterday, weirdly, the offense with Mason being a backup, even though again, I think or at least I thought a little bit more highly of Mason going into this game. Uh but at the end of the day, he is a backup and you know, we put up 28 points, chance to win at the end. Can you ask much more from the offense with a backup and how much resources we have allocated to it right now? I think that’s the one thing you could definitely talk about is how we’ve mismanaged the offense and weapons and how we’ve designed this thing for sure. But in yesterday’s game, I mean, Ma Yeah, Mason wasn’t good. He hurt us a little bit, but that but that’s this team. Like it’s just like I don’t I don’t want to say like we’re bad, we’re god awful. You can’t be when you’re six and five. But going back to what Crowley said, it’s like in a league that’s just really inconsistent where you have automatically going in every season there’s like 10 bad teams. Is it really saying much if you’re like average to above average when like guarantee there’s going to be like 10 bad teams that are incompetent and don’t know what the hell they’re doing? from teams like the Jets, Browns, Raiders, Jaguars, those type of teams year in and year out. So, I I don’t even know if it’s like really saying that much. It’s like again, we’re not bad bad, but it’s you f bad teams find ways to lose games like that. Or maybe in this case, it’s just like mediocre teams find ways to lose games. But at other times, we find weird ways to win. But may maybe that’s what it is because we’re not that bad in you know six and five. We’re not incompetent but it’s yeah mediocre teams find ways to be inconsistent. Maybe that’s maybe that’s a better way to put it right there. Used to be a time where you know you lose a game you’re talking yourself into next week like automatically as soon as as soon as the game’s over. was like, I want to get to next week so bad so we could flip the script and prove to the league, prove to the fans all that stuff that, oh, we we we still are who we say we are. We’re we’re still the Pittsburgh Steelers. Like, we’re we’re going to bounce back and everything’s going to be good. We’ll be a playoff team. We got a chance to go deep in the playoffs. That type of stuff. Is anyone saying that now? Does anyone get that feeling? Because losses happen in the league. It’s just these losses are becoming way too common and way too much the same. These seasons are becoming way too much the same. If anything, it’s hit a low point, at least from a defensive standpoint. There’s stats out there that this defense is the worst we’ve seen. And the Tomlin era arguably in like the last 40 years. I saw that one on social media this morning. What’s that? That’s inexcusable, right? What’s What’s the defense for that? Given how much this defense is getting paid and given how high the expectations were for this defense this season and that the head coach, his claim to fame, his side of the ball is the defense. But I don’t know if I got much more to say, man. I don’t know if I got much more to say. Uh, that’s it on a Monday. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Stay chilling and peace.

  1. Tomlin is out coached every single week because he has had the same game plan for 20yrs now. What he doesn’t seem to realize is that every coach, player and assistant has had him figured out for the last 10yrs. We have become a traveling circus and every stop knows our act 🤦‍♂️

  2. Yes. It was cooked when Steelers traded WR George Pickens! Just like it was cooked last season when Diontae Johnson was traded and replaced with Van Jefferson. Any successful offense has two above average WR’s!! I’m watching NFL games! Not watching Steelers anymore!! Seen all the Mike Tomlin facial expressions on the Jumbotron!..

  3. Deebo said it best, the team just isn’t fun to watch.

They are not a dynamic team, win or lose, they are not exciting. You have said this many times, they don’t move the needle.

If you take an average to find a standard, the average over the last 5 years is mediocre at best. Thereby, the standard is mediocre at best
