Breaking down Brandon Nimmo trade, what it means for future of Mets
Mets are saying goodbye to their
longest tenured player and someone who owner Steve
Cohen referred to as a member of their Fab, Four SNY MLB
inside Iran, demartino reporting that the Mets are
sending Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in return for
infielder Marcus. Semien Nimmo has spent his entire 10-year MLB
career with the Mets who drafted him 13th. Overall in 2011, out of
high school in Wyoming. So in return the amazings get
semien a three-time All-Star two-time Gold Glove winner.
Including Last year at second base, the 35 year old hit at
least 20 homers all five full seasons for 2019 to 2024, but hit just 15 in 127 games last year he was
also reportedly. He’s reported deal, 26 million
dollars, each of the next two seasons and then 20 million in
2028. While Nimmo is has a deal twenty point five million every
year through 2030. We are now joined by SNY MLB
inside Iran dimartino who confirms this story and Andy
let’s just as you mentioned in reported last week, Brandon
Nimmo was on the block. How did this deal with Texas go down? Well, it was kind of an
old-fashioned baseball trade in that way with Texas. A man is
sense that it was need for need the Mets is David Stern’s has
been very clear publicly have been looking to improve their
defense and the Rangers from their end have been looking for a different offensive
approach. So it matches up there and that
sense and you know more broadly for the Mets it
gives them a chance to improve their defense really two
positions because Simeon Though off his Peak as a hitter is still an elite defensive
second baseman. And that’s what really excites the Mets, even
though there is still upside in that bat, not just for the Mets
perspective that talk to some texas-based, people who think
Simeon as a couple solid years left isn’t in him as a hitter. But this is really about what he
does for you at second base. And then defensively, if you
look at the Outfield prior to this trade, the Mets
had Juan Soto and Brendan Mo locked into the Our Outfield positions for years
to come and neither is an elite Defender at those
positions. So now they have the flexibility and one of the
corners either to go internal with one
of their young athletic players like a Carson been Georgette
Williams into the Outfield mix sooner than later or perhaps if
things break a certain way and it in the offseason, they could
look at a Cody Bellinger for immediate impact in the
Outfield. But really Bellinger or not, this was about
moving on, from that name, all contract and Improving
the defense for this coming season, you led me to my
next question because obviously this news is not a surprise
after the rumors that were out there less than a
week ago. But he was a main stay here with the Mets that
they committed to financially just a few years ago. So what sort of happened other than
just sort of Juan Soto arriving that made Brandon Nimmo
quote-unquote Expendable for the Mets. It wasn’t, he was a tough player
to trade. I would, I would almost think
that if met people were able to speak publicly about this and I
can’t because it’s trade isn’t official yet. But Expendable
would probably be too strong a word for them in a way, like,
it breaks their hearts to trade, Brandon Nimmo in a lot
of ways, somebody who really has deep
relationships at every level of the organization and she going
back to Sandy, Alderson is very first draft, you don’t talk
about a Mainstay, but it’s really just a baseball
decision where you have an aging. Player whose only were as is the
case with the rest of us in our lives, is only going to age
in One Direction, and for his particular job Nimmo, he’s just that contract is just really
long. He said through 2030 and simians, only a three-year
contract, so that’s just it just made sense
from a shorter commitment and better
defense next year, but it hurts them to lose him as a person as you mention this teeth, this
helps the team and mentally Offensively, he still coming off
a gold glove season, but his offensive numbers Marcus
semien. I’m just referring here to have dropped off, so they’re
willing to take that drop-off in offense. But Nimmo, even though he might have
declined in the Outfield was still providing some pop and
with the home run. So how do you think they will? You know, you know, you know, fill that
offensive role that they might be losing in the Run production,
with Nimmo. It’s so early in the offseason
and there’s so many moving Parts. Amen. That right now the
Mets. I can tell you for a fact they don’t have a specific. Plan
like this Domino fell. So we’re signing this guy because
Nemo’s gone, it’s not like that. It’s like over the course of this off,
season will be the enough moving around with a roster well
where they think they’ll be in a good place now
offensively by spring training again, whether they take a big
swing in a Bellinger, whether they bring Pete, Alonso
back whether they do something that we don’t foresee. At this
point, they think they have a lot of time to show up that
offense. And again, it’s just about defense being such a core
value. Value for Stearns that they saw an opportunity to get
defensively better and didn’t need an exact blueprint to how
you how you replace the most bat in
the lineup? That’s not what this was about. It wasn’t the
first domino, in a whole plan set of moves, it was just the
first domino in an offseason that could take them in a lot of
a lot of different directions for more on that. We
welcome in Todd zeile and Todd. I want to start on from a pure
baseball since with you on this one. How do you think the Mets
got better after making this move for I
mean, I think that remains to be seen.
I’m not quite positive yet. They have gotten better. I
think Marcus semien is a very, very good player but you’re also getting a guy.
That’s 35, years old, as a couple years left on. His
contract is Gold, Glove caliber, was a Gold Glove winner
last year but his offensive numbers dipped a
little bit. But I think, as far as you looking at it from a
holistic standpoint, you’ve got a guy that can play a
very, very good quality second base. He could kill fill
that spot there. I know. On prevention and especially
defense up the middle is something that this Mets team
has been looking to improve upon, but at the same time this is not
a lock that he’s going to be that same productive guy, you know, you don’t see a lot of
guys getting moved for at 35 plus
years of age. So I think it remains to be seen. I
do think that it’s an absence to not have Brandon Nimmo in
that locker room, but I also think that his willingness to move that know.
Trade clause and and take this trade tells me that there’s something,
maybe even beneath the surface under
the radar about that clubhouse. That that maybe he knows better than
we know. Hey, man, Todd, you let me to my next
question because obviously you had a long tenured career but
with many different teams. So getting traded, I’m sure it was,
you know, part is part of life in the major leagues. I was
a little surprised you know that he I thought he’d
be tougher to move because of the no trade. But, you know, as
you mentioned maybe he figured if they didn’t want me here, why
don’t want to be in a place where I’m not Wanted. But as someone who
knows, Brandon Mo. Well, were you a little surprised that
he ultimately wave the no-trade Clause? Yeah, I was
a man, and I think the reason that I was surprised is because if you get to this point in your
career, you’ve never put the World Series ring on. You
want to make sure that you’re going to one-up me, giving
yourself the best opportunity to do that. I think that anybody around baseball over the
last four or five years. Recognizes that was Steve Cohen
at the helm and David Stern’s as the president. This team. Is not going to take anything
less than postseason, and winning
opportunities, and get to do, everything they can to make
those happen. So, as a player may be sacrificing,
a little bit of that possibility to win when you have the ability to
block any trade was a little bit surprising. But I think, you
know, it goes to what I was saying, initially a man, and that is that I think this Clubhouse was
a bit of a mystery. I think Brandon is a guy that has always
been in an upfront voice in the
clubhouse. A voice of reason, a
solid guy. A homegrown guy. That brings a kind of
perspective in that Clubhouse. And you just gotta wonder if
there’s something in that mix that made him feel like he had a
better chance somewhere else. If that’s the case that I think
the Mets are looking at other issues and other holes,
that they’re going to have to
fill to fulfill what they’ve, you know, set out to do. And
that’s to win a championship. Yeah, that chemistry in the
clubhouse has definitely been something people have whispered.
Even loudly about the last two or three years.
But, you know, now as we sit back and analyze what’s next,
you know, you know, as Gary mentioned, there’s a thread coming up here,
Todd, you sit back, you know, the Mets. Need, you know
what’s out there? What do you think this now? Opens up for
David Stern’s has next possible move or priority? That’s a great
question. And I think, you know, Alysha Lee, just
reacting to it. I had heard some, you know, of
the rumors about Brandon and I just figured it wasn’t going
to happen because of the things that I just mentioned, this
tells me that there’s, you know, Maybe some other
underlying things that have to be addressed. And I think some
of that is that glue, that heart, that sort of, pulse of
the the Mets that I think was missing last season, I think has
shown up and gone away over the last three or four seasons. So maybe
there’s going to be a little to try to fill that void and we can
talk about the Jose Iglesias of the world or Max
scherzer’s of the world. I think Jesse Winker was a guy
that was made to fill that role last year with all the injuries.
He wasn’t able to be there. Glue. So I think that’s one
issue, but I think secondarily this opens the possibility to go try and get good defensively in center field and maybe have
an option left field. It could be, you know, is it Cody
Bellinger a guy that’s on the list or is Kyle, Tucker, a guy that’s on the list? I think they’re, you know, you
open that possibility for David Stern’s to
go. Look to fill this with some guys that you
wondered. If they brought him
over how they were going to make it
work with Brandon and left and so doing right.

What's the advantage of trading NIMMO and his 20 milkion dollar yearly contract and SEMIEN and his 26 million dollar per yr contract.
Good ,smart opinion by TODD ZEILE. BETTER THAN MARTINO'S.
Team chemistry was done with when STINGY STEARNS didn't bring back OMG JOSE IGLESIAS.
So is this like Ringo replacing Pete Best?
Remember the other member of the fab 4
Technically right now is not a Met Alonso
Or is this Stearns continuing to purge personnel from previous regimes?
Guys 35 and never hit for average granted he has a good glove
New World Order.
Todd Zeile with a great take.
Meanwhile they retain trash like O'Neil. We need at least 7 pitchers 4 starters. This is why this team will NEVER EVER win another WS…EVER.
I will miss seeing Nimmo. He was a great Mets player. I was tired of seeing his noodle arm though. He has the weakest arm of all MLB OF no question.
This trade seems wrong on every level. if the Mets can acquire Cody Bellinger, it will offset the sting of this trade. I will miss Brandon Nimmo immensely, he was a class act in every facet of the game.
I could explain it… You traded away a guy who hit .262, 25 HR, and 92 RBI, for a guy who hit .230, 15 HR, and 62 RBI. It does not make sense.
FAB 3
Blame Nimmo, his fault. Dude busts it everyday and loved by the fans so naturally they’d move him for a decrepit old man 2nd baseman. McNeil and Pete are next. It’s purge the white guy time.
Not a Mets fan lol but this is why the Mets are the Mets
King Cohen needs to put his checkbook away and stop screwing with the chemistry of this team! Nobody wants to play with Soto.
Dodgers are scared 😂
Mets are nowhere near a ring
More going on here than we know
I will miss Brandon – he was a good Met – but I understand why the Mets did it – they wanted to get out from under the remaining 5 years and get better defensively. I believe the Mets will trade McNeil as well – they will also probaly trade Acuna, Vientos & Jett Williams as well to clear that log jam of infielders. I think they will call the tigers to see if they are trading Skubal or not – if they aren't I think they will try to get Peralta from Brewers & Alcantra from The Marlins. Then they can wait to try for Skubal in 2027(provided there isn't a lock out). If the Tigers do trade him – the Mets have the young talent & major league ready talent to make a pitch for Skubal. I would make everyone available except for McLean & Tong. I think the Mets will try for Bellinger – not Tucker – he wants or 300 million or 400 million – too rich for Stearns. I would try for Bellinger to play rightfield – move Soto to left field & hope Carson Benge makes the team in Spring training. Hope they resign Diaz & Pete – we need them. I would also go after Okatomo – he is a better all around player and can play first base – when Pete DHs & the reverse as well. If Pete leaves (which I hope he doesn't) – I would sign Bellinger, Okatomo to play first – then try to sign Schwarber to a short term deal – high average like 3 years 35 million per =(with an option for 4th year) – that way Schwarber replaces Pete's offense & Okatomo will play first – better defense at that postion & can hit 20 plus homeruns. With Pete & Nimmo gone – you replace the team with new blood. Stearns gets 2 new pitchers for the rotation – resign Diaz & sign 4 more relievers to strength the bullpen. If Pete leaves & he makes the moves I stated above – their lineup – Lindor, Semien, Soto, Schwarber, Oktmato, Bellinger, Alvarez, Baty, Benge. If Pete stays – Lindor, Semien, Soto, Pete, Okatomo, Bellinger, Alvarez, Baty & Benge.
super speculative moove. We have so much talent in the infield with the young players. I'm guessing they're planning on trading them soon? But getting rid of a solid player for better defense? what if Simien gets hurt? he's 35!
Nimmo is a fine man..he was and still is my favorite player….absolutely the best to you and your family
Terrible trade. Second base wasn't where defense needed to improve. Nimmo is a far better hitter than Semian. Id rather keep Nimmo and alternate him in the DH role. Outfield defense still has wholes. Third base is the need to address Not second base. A gold glove second baseman doesn't help our needs, especially a older player who can't produce offensively. Smh
