ALERT: Will Hardy CRACKS the Utah Jazz offensive code—Lauri Markkanen UNLEASHED! | Utah Jazz Podcast

Will Hardy and the Jazz may have figured out the offense. The defense isn’t nearly as bad as it feels, which really means this team continues to just be way better than we thought. It’s next on Locked on Jazz. You are Locked on Jazz, your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. How are you? I am David Lock, radio voice of the Utah Jazz. Jazz NBA insider. This is Locked on Jazz. It’s your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz, giving you insight, expertise, geeky numbers, and hopefully making it way better to be a Jazz fan each and every day. Thank you so much for making Locked on Jazz your first listen of the day. And thank you for making Locked On the number one sports podcast network. You’re awesome. Appreciate you so much. And to the everydayers out there, you truly are the best. Thanks for making us what we are. All right, here is our plan for the day. It is a Will Wednesday. I’m going to get Will Hardy talking about his relationship with Keonte George and how it was built. Some interesting comments there from yesterday. We’ll highlight that. Uh the Jazz lost to the Lakers last night, but it was it’s interesting. I dug in today expecting kind of to find some trends that are daunting. Our schedule is particularly daunting coming up here. Um and I didn’t really find that honestly. Now, we have not played many of the top 10 offenses or defenses. Um, but I’ll still show you something that’s interesting. So, like Oklahoma City, we play coming up. We’ve played Detroit. We’ve not played Sanony in the regular season. We’ve not played Houston. We’ve not played Denver. We’ve not played Dallas. We’ve not played Toronto. We’ve not played Cleveland. We’ve played Boston and Phoenix. Those are So, we’ve played played four games against top 10 defenses. And against top 10 offenses, we have not played Houston. We’ve not played Denver. We’ve not played New York. We’ve not played Oklahoma City. We’ve played Minnesota twice. Played Phoenix twice. We just played the Lakers last night. And we’ve played Boston, who’s 10th. Although those are cleaning the glass. Um, and we So, we have played six games against top 10 offenses and just a few games against top 10 defenses. Um, but one of the things I was kind of looking at this morning was with the daunting schedule we have coming up and I think it could be really hard, could be ugly. We’ll talk about it throughout the week. How are we doing against those teams? We’re doing pretty well. So, we’re going to talk about that. Um, Isaiah Collier is in some rare fight air. We’ll talk about some of the other player performances here as well today. Um, but let’s start with I think Will Hardy and the team have figured out the offense. And Will’s actually done this just about every single year. um amazingly um has done this just about every single year that the team plays a certain level for about 10 games and then Will starts to make adjustments and the offense bursts and he literally has done it every single year. And if you look at the offense in the fiveame road trip, the offensive rating was a 98.6. And if you look at the offensive rating of the Jazz since then, it’s a 122.6. Yeah, you heard that right. Let me just say them again because it’s numbers and you’re driving or doing something and you’re sort of partially listening and you’re like, “Stop throwing numbers at me, Lock.” Um 98.6 6 was our offensive rating on the road, which is horrific. And in the last five games, it’s been a 122.6. So, we’re scoring 24 points per 100 possessions more than we did on the fivegame road trip. That’s pretty incredible. Um, and that is really the pattern that Will Hardy has kind of done every single game or every single season of his career. It’s kind of impressive actually if you just isolate. Sorry, I’m looking at a number. You can tell if I’m looking away from the screen for those of you. If you just look at one number, which is the first 10 games, and do this. I’ll do this tomorrow on the show of every game all year. This is this kind of gets this is consistently what Will Hardy does. And we I think they figured the offense out 10 games into the season. If you just want to take that metric instead, the Jazz offense was a 110.1 and 26th ranked in the NBA. And since then, sorry did since then with where he’s taken off and this is a trend we’ve seen every single year. And as I said, we’ll talk about it more. Since then, the offense is now the seventh best in the NBA at the 122.4 I mentioned. So, Will Hardy’s figured something out offensively. He’s done it every year. What’s interesting to me is the way he’s using Lowry and Keonte. And what’s interesting to me about last night, we talked about this on post guest. I thought the Lakers really had a plan. Now, they’re not a great defensive team, but I thought they really had a plan. They came out and in my book, they had come out and they had they were going to not they were very prepared for Lowry’s offball screen action. Lowry’s first few field goals were all plays in which he put a bunch of ball ball on the floor a bunch of times. had to self-create his basket instead of having them assisted, which is a little unusual for Lowry. And then we just didn’t see Lowry popping free very often early in that game for looks and opportunities and things of that nature. That was just not how the game worked. Um Lowry last night by the end of the night had nine of his field goals assisted. Um but Lowry had in nine out of 12, which is his usual probably his usual number. Um but his first two or three were not like the Jazz had to do different things. Lowry had to do different things and then Keonte was on fire early. Faded a little bit as the games going on. We just don’t have any help for these guys. Um but Keonte scored a season high or careerhigh points in the first quarter and career-high points in the first half because they were overplaying Lowry. And Keonte showed that he was capable of then taking the burden and reading the defense and seeing what’s going on and making those plays. So really terrific uh for where the Jazz are offensively and what they’ve been able to do right now. And it’s it’s you know some of it’s the way they’re using Lowry and Kei together with an intention to find a mismatch. Last night they ran 11 pick and rolls between the two of them. It’s the best night they’ve had together all year. And that’s a little bit of like, okay, well, you know, you’re not getting um you’re not getting those opport the same opportunities as you as you want off the some of some of the other stuff. And so therefore, how is Lowry going to stay in the game and make plays? And that that’s the impressive one that that’s taking place here with that is how the Jazz are able to do that. And that’s been, you know, that’s been to me what’s kind of been impressive on a lot of these things. Um, and we may hear from Will on that as well because I asked Will about that. Um, and so may see if we can grab that for you as well uh from this week. So I’ve got I’ve got two Will Hardy three Will Hardy things actually I was going to try to get to today. So, we’ll see if we if we can get all of them in the show before before it’s too late. All right, that’s to me is the impressive one that’s taking place here is this is really kind of once again this team’s getting better. Will’s coaching it. Um, and I I think that has to be, you know, if you’re a Jazz fan, this these are the kind of things I think have to be awfully exciting for you. Um, in the fact that this team is is making these steps in this in this progress. Um, there is a concerning offensive trend with one of our individual players. There is literally I’m going to give you a list of 12 players in the NBA and 13 and one of them should not belong. It’s next on Locked on Jazz. Okay, I did a little Google search today or it’s called Stathead. They search players in a three-game span this year of the NBA season who’ve played 80 minutes of basketball over three games and have not taken a three-point shot. Okay, that’s it. 80 minutes have not taken a three-point shot. Um, here are the names. That was the only search that come out on the list. Jaylen Durren, 71, 280lb center for the Detroit Pistons. Zion Williamson, 6’7″, 300lb forward for the New Orleans Pelicans. DeAndre Eaton, 7 foot1 center, 265 pounds for the Los Angeles Lakers. Isaiah Harkinstein, 7 foot center for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Ivanka Zubac, Los Angeles Clippers, 71, 275B center. Um, that’s interesting. Someone’s name who I can’t read my own writing. Um, which probably means that I know him so well that I scribbled it and it made sense. Well, I’ll continue. Nick Claxton, 7 foot center with limited Oh, I know it is limited uh size, so 220. Yakob Purle, 7 foot tall center for the Toronto Raptors. Mark Williams, 7 foot tall center for the Phoenix Suns. Rudy Gobear for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Ryan Clock Brener, the center for the Charlotte Hornets. His backup Muasa Diabate and Kada for the Celtics, former Utah State player. Okay. So, one, two, three, four, five, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 guys who have played 80 minutes of basketball and not taken a three this year over a three game span. It’s happened 71 times. In other words, Jaylen Duran just pretty much does it every night. Like DeAndre Aton’s done it 11 times and Nicks Claxton’s done it three times and Mosia Diabot has done it a span of three different times or over 80. Jaylen Duran’s done it nine times. Daniel Gaffford is on that list. Seven foot center from the Dallas Mavericks. Rudy Gobear has done it virtually for every game all year. Isaiah Harkinstein, Ryan Clark, Yaka Purle, Kada Mark Williams, Zion Williamson, Ivaka Zubac 71s, and Isaiah Collier. That is there to explain to you how incredibly rare what Isaiah Collier is doing right now. And Isaiah Collier is playing the point guard position for the Utah Jazz and has not shot a three in over 80 minutes of basketball. I just We’ll see. He’s great. His tempo is amazing. His passing is incredible. His strength is remarkable. He’s great. He has so many awesome skills. But I go back to the Will Hardy line that you have to make sure that your weakness is not so severe that it derails everything else. This is just I don’t know because I can see how great he is at everything else. This is just not being done by any other guard in the NBA. I mean, I haven’t done the search, but I bet you if I take the list to five threes over a threeame span, I’ll bet you it’s not very many guys either. You’re gonna get into the guys who have who didn’t take five threes over as some of these elite Giannis Adakumbos, Amen Thompson types. That’s probably the answer once we do that. There’s probably a few more, but like there aren’t many. And you’re pro of guards like Damada Sabonis, I’m sure, is in that list and some other guys like that. But this is a hard way to play. Let’s just leave it at that. This is a really hard way to play point guard in the NBA. And the Lakers didn’t guard Isaiah at all last night. Now, Isaiah creates a tempo and an energy and a pizzazz and a juice that we don’t get from anyone else. Ben Anderson asked kind of an interesting question the other day about like when do you know someone’s a change of piece and when do you not? And the bottom line is it generally has not impacted us that much. Last night it did. The offensive rating when Isaiah Collier was on the floor last night was a 104 and our offensive rating for the night was a 119. So it did impact us last night in that the offense was not as good when Isaiah was on the floor. Now sometimes Isaiah plays without Kee and plays without Lowry. So there’s a little to that. But let’s keep an eye on this. It’s It’s a little different. And it’s not a little different. It’s a lot different. And I get concerned when things are a lot different. It makes me question whether they’ll work. I am not an outlier believer. Uh, by the way, speaking of a lot different, Lowry Markin has the third highest or the second highest behind Luca Donuch’s points for a three-game span in the NBA this year. I mean, he really is just awesome right now. And maybe that’s why the offense has clicked in is Lowry is really just awesome. And you know, we also probably should look and see where’s Lowry getting his assists. They might be coming from Isaiah Collier, in which case, you know, you understand his value because the Jazz are creating things for Lowry Markin and when he’s and in those, you know, those opportunities, Lowry is getting it from someone and it’s going to have it. It’s got to be. It’s usually from one of those guys. Isaiah Collier last night assisted on three of Lowry’s field goals, but they they were all uh I think they were all two. Like that Lowry that’s where Isaiah’s finding Lowry on his way to the basket. The other three came for Lowry came from Keonte George. and Ysef Nerkage who had six turnovers last night had to also had a bunch of six turn six assists because he’s being forced under that game to make a bunch of passes. So the off the Jazz have figured out the offense. They’ve got this weird little thing going on with their backup point guard. He doesn’t shoot threes in a league that only shoots threes. And it will be interesting to see whether that kind of an outlier works. It’s just a wild outlier is really what I’m trying to tell you. Uh pretty good note about some defensive stuff for you and then we’ll listen have a quick Wills Wednesday as well next on Locked on Jess. Today’s show is brought to you by FanDuel. Time to do Wills Wednesday. I’ve got three snippets I want to try to get to. We’ll see. Uh I do want to point this out on defense. Thought this was another really good sign. So, we’ve played six games against top 10 offenses and we’ve got a few more coming up. I I do think the schedule’s pretty daunting. I think we could have some really ugly nights coming up here. Um but we’ve got New York coming. We’ve got two against Houston. We’ve got Denver coming. Um I think we have an Orlando coming before the end of the month. We have Oklahoma City twice. We have the Lakers again. Like our next set of games. Oklahoma City is the eighth best offense. Lakers are the ninth best offense. We play the Warriors who are not actually top 10. Sacramento. Then Houston, who’s the number two offense behind New York now. They’re pretty close to 1-1. Then we play Houston again. Then we play Brooklyn, who’s not. Then we play New York, who’s the number two off. Then we play Oklahoma City, who’s the eighth offense. That’s then we have before we have cup we have cup games in there that shouldn’t be that hard. Then we have the Lakers that’s the ninth best offense. We have Orlando that’s the sixth best offense. We have Denver that’s the number three offense right after that. I mean it is going to be quite a stretch. The right now we’ve played six games against top defensive teams. Our defense is ranked in those games in the ninth percentile and the fourth percentile both ugly. One in the 74th percentile against Boston. the other’s kind of m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle m middle middling and I looked it up we’re actually against top 10 offenses right now we’re the 17th best defense in the NBA against top 10 offenses. We’ll see if that holds but that’s a pretty good sign. All right, will Wednesday we’re going to start I have two or three things I’m going to try to get to here if I can. I’m not sure I’m going to get to all get to all of them but we’re going to try. Um Will Wednesday is the first one we’re going to start with is um Will talking about his relationship with Keonte. I asked about it last night prior to the game in regards to uh their meeting on the court with at that time. I think Keiant’s two of 11. He’s struggling miserably. Will meets stops him. They come together. Keonte turns the night around. But I, as I talked about yesterday in the show, I just thought there was a real trust level there between the two. Yeah. I mean, I’ve spent a lot of time with Keonte on and off the court. Um, you know, a big part of this job is not just coaching the the player, but coaching the human. And trust for sure takes time. Um, you know, Keiante and I’s relationship has grown immensely over the first part of his career. We’ve had a lot of really hard conversations. We’ve buted heads in different moments. Um, but he knows and trusts at this point that I want what’s best for him. Um, you know, the conversation in the game the other night was really just trying to help him reenter his focus on what was important and what was to come. Um, you know, most most games that guys end up with good numbers. They don’t just make every other shot. It goes in waves. And at that point, I think Keonte was like two for 11 in the game. and just trying to help him focus on, hey man, there’s 21 minutes left in this game. You know, we didn’t know there was going to be more than that, but um there’s 21 minutes left in this game and there’s still a lot of opportunity out there to go have a great stretch and good moments and help us win the game. Um but again, those, you know, having those conversations is a is a big part of the job. like not every conversation we have is about tactics. In fact, I would say, you know, most coaches, you know, when you’re talking to your players in a game, you have to coach the mindset a lot. Um, what’s important. I think with our young players in particular, we have to help them narrow their focus on, hey, for the next this next pocket of time, let’s focus on these few things because if you start trying to make everything too broad, um, it gets really hard because it can be distracting. Um, so I’m proud of the relationship with Keante, but he’s he’s put as much into it as I have. like it’s not any relationship that’s going to be in a good spot, you know, it can’t be me doing 90% and him doing 10. Like Keon has invested in our relationship as well. I thought that was the most interesting part there was the comment by Will that he is that Keant’s invested in it as much or if not more. And I thought that I thought that was really telling. I thought that was kind of an eyeopening comment there from Will in regards to that. So, um, that’s kind of what jumped out to me about that. But I also thought it was interesting and you know, we’ve seen him, Will says it like we’ve coached him really hard. Will’s signature whether it’s from Pop or whoever it’s from is that he is willing to coach these guys hard and he and Kee still have that trust. All right, here’s another one. I think this is it’s hard for me to this is harder to do than I thought it would be. Um, this is from uh another pregame presser. Um, and this is a little bit on how Lowry is getting his stuff um, and how Lowry and how they’re using Lowry in different ways um, than they have in the past uh, and how that is leading to things. So, we will uh, I’ll have that for you here um, from Will. I think tough stretches have been loud. Um I think defensively, you know, I think, sorry, that was not the pressure that I wanted. That’s exactly what I thought might happen. Apologize. Let me grab a different one for you quickly. Um I have it I have them both ready, so we will be able to do that. Um that was a question I think that I gave for you last week about how he um reacts to the offense and what’s going on. So um let’s get this one. Wow. Um, all right. Uh, this is about Lowry. Um, this is the one about Lowry getting the um how he’s getting the ball and how they’re using him. Thought it was super interesting. Two point shots assisted, which I don’t need to tell you is like it’s higher than anything Klay Thompson ever had. What have you done offensively to create this? and how what did you have differently because it’s up from about 14 percentage points from last year. You said it was two point shots. Two point shots. Um yeah, I mean I think we’re well it being up from last year I think can be explained by last year Lowry was we were trying to get him the ball against the switch a lot at the elbow um for him to play more of an ISO. this year. I can’t think of very many ISOs off the top of my head. Um, there have been a few. He shot the jab jumper against Seakum last game in front of their bench, but that really hasn’t been how we’ve played. He’s getting most of his two-point shots cutting um coming off of screens that are inside the three-point line. And Lowry generally is very efficient in terms of not wasting his dribble. So when he turns the corner, he’s usually doing most things in one, max two dribbles. Um, but we’re always trying to learn by observing our players. And you know, one thing I took away from watching Lowry this summer in Euro Basket was he was really effective against switching defenses when he caught the ball close to the basket. Um, he’s done a lot of work on his body. He continues to get stronger, more physical, understanding how to use his body to hold people off. And I feel like, you know, we’re trying to recognize that and use his skill set to our advantage, but a lot of it is the fact that he just stays on the move and cuts so well. Um, I think stripping back the ISOs in this early part of the season is probably why you’re seeing an uptick from his numbers last year. So, interesting. And then they actually have ISOed a bunch after that. Um, but hopefully you thought those are good. We’re gonna do that every Wednesday, kind of Will’s Wednesday, uh, with his insight. There a lot of things that I talk about with you and then I ask him about the press conference. We might as well get hear what Will has to say about it. Um, tomorrow we’ll do jazz trends, uh, as our third segment. Friday will be ask locked on J. Actually, Friday will also be late. Tomorrow will also be late game watch. Hopefully get some got none last night, but have some leftovers from earlier in the week um, for you on that. So, uh, you can catch it. Monday’s league trends. Tuesday’s late game watch. Wednesday’s Wills Wednesday. Thursday is late game watch. F and some jazz trends. And then Friday is the uh your locked Ask LJ every week. Thanks so much for being a part of locked on jazz. Thank you for being here. Hopefully you enjoyed that. And uh we get two days off and then Oklahoma City’s in town on Friday and then we play a little bit of a gauntlet. three games in four nights. Uh with the Lakers back in town on uh Sunday and Golden State on Monday before the Thanksgiving break and then we’re back at it. A really tough schedule. We’ll be talking about that coming up on the show. Um and we’ll talk some more about Will’s offensive evolution every single season tomorrow on the program. Thanks for tuning in. This has been Locked on Jazz. We now send you to the first ever 247 national NBA channel, Locked on NBA Plus. Check out game night at locked on NBA.

  1. The only real vantage point to Isaiah Collier+Lauri Markkanen is Mike Conley+Lauri Markkanen from 22’ and they did pretty well. Mike Conley tried to shoot threes, but seems the percentages were quite bad so maybe he should not have.

  2. They didn't let Keyonte George cook …. They need to let him try and close the game out key kept passing and running to the corner, it's like they wanted keyonte to pass in the 4th quarter I was surprised they didn't let him cook when he was hot

  3. Why is Walter Clayton Jr. not playing last few games? He was averaging more points per game. Rebounds steals plus he has team high assist before he was listed DNP – Coach's Decision! He's lucky to be given 14 minutes in the game. And he at one point was scoring more points than Bailey! Assists. How is he supposed to learn how to be an NBA player? I can see the future with Walter. If this continues some years Jazz will be sorry because when another team gets him Clayton will flourish! you watch. Coaches are hurting his confidence! He was doing better than Bailey easrly. Bailey got more minutes. He will help this team just like he took Gators to championship and won bast player. Crazy not allowing him space to adjust.

  4. Am I the only one who thinks collier grew. I swear he was always 6’1-6’2. Now he’s as tall as keyonte at 6’4. And he looks bigger out there. Any way you can ask him lock.
