Brandon Clarke could be the next breakout (Cardinals) prospect

  1. MLB.com posted this a week and a half ago so figured its worth sharing now that he’s coming to St Louis

  2. After reading it, I feel worse about the trade. Another guy with injury issues. It feels like we have an assortment of these type of guys. I hope that I am wrong but this feels like Hence all over again. High upside that makes everyone take notice, but cannot pitch enough to actually make a difference as a starter.

Time will tell and I hope that I am wrong!

  3. The thing about pitching prospects is that you collect as many as you can with as much upside as you can.

Fitts and Clarke are replacing the Dakota Hudson and Jake Woodford types. In both cases most won’t work out but when they do it’ll be with higher ceilings.

  4. Let’s see what Bloom can do. Developing and retaining our own staff aces has not been our strength historically.

  5. I’m a Mets fan but he was my little league teammate. He was actually an outfielder back then and was given our team’s gold glove award. Pretty sure I remember him pitching that year as it was the first year of transitioning from machine pitch to player pitch but he was definitely an outfielder mainly. Think he was three years younger than the rest of everybody (I was in fourth grade, same as his sister who ended up playing D1 softball) which goes to show how talented players who make it professionally are. My dad still runs into his dad from time to time for work stuff I think, and if I’m not mistaken his dad played collegiately at Canisius.

One time we both were practicing and it was just us and our dads there and we both goofed off way too much, I remember his dad saying he was getting punished as we were leaving, and I had to write an email to him apologizing for how I behaved haha.

Hopefully he does great for you guys.. as long as it’s not against us

  6. He grew up a Red Sox fan. So its gonna be another Adam Wainwright type of deal! (Fingers crossed)

  7. I think we need to not overhype this guy. He’s a lottery ticket.

He pitched at a junior college. He hasn’t pitched much, period. And he only has 2 pitches.

He’s a high upside guy, so if he hits, it could be a big deal. But I think the most likely outcome is a reliever.

  8. Or, he could not be. He’s likely a back-end reliever IF he gets to the bigs. SMH over some of the BFIB.

  9. I just don’t trust any Cardinals pitching prospects. I haven’t for years. There is no logic behind it; I just can’t remember ever feeling like “Oh I can’t wait for player X to get here”, and then it worked.

All I can think about is Ankiel and Reyes and Martinez, and Flaherty, and Wacha, and the rest of the mediocre and the guys that just didn’t have it.
