Red Sox add veteran Sonny Gray in trade with Cardinals (source)

  1. The Cardinals are sending the Red Sox $20M to cover Sonny Gray’s salary, sources tell ESPN. Gray’s contract will pay him $35M this year, and there is a $30M mutual option — not club, as had been previously reported — with a $5M buyout. Cash covers half of Gray’s guarantee.

  2. Good pick up.

Not a star of course, but a solid mid-rotation guy who will eat innings.

    Last 3 seasons, he’s pitched 184 innings, 166 innings and 180 innings.

Can do a lot worse than him at the middle to back end of your rotation.

But, he is older so my only worry is drop off due to age. Not saying that will happen this coming season, but it does happen to all at some point, we’ll find out if he’s at that point or not.

He’s been a good solid pro, not spectacular of course. He did have a few really good seasons though.

  3. Nice. He had a good year with the Cards, a little inconsistent and gave up some homers, but overall pretty solid year.
