[CNBC] Leafs valued the most valuable franchise in the NHL – $4.3 Billion USD

  1. That’s a Titanic level of money to be at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Don’t ask me why I’ve been cheering for them for 30+ years.

  2. Being worth all that money the leafs should start using the big stick that comes with it instead of being a “good league partner”.

The league has fucked over the leafs for years with suspensions and fines that other teams don’t receive. They also are routinely in the bottom half of the league in penalties drawn every year.

Start talking shit, they can’t treat you worse than they already have.

  3. Oilers about to sell?

How is a team that wouldn’t exist today if not for drafting NOO every year since my birth worth more than the Original Six teams in actual markets with actual fan bases?

  4. The top 5 most valuable teams are also the Top 5 in revenue. Lotta shocked comments for something pretty easily explainable.

  5. Is there any parallel in sports to the Leafs history of failure while also being the most valuable team?

  6. It’s on us fans as well.

We can’t continuously support them when they don’t give us anything in return

  7. Habs being as valuable as they are is pretty wild. Montreal is half the size of Toronto. Quebec is way smaller than Ontario (although Ontario has 2 teams).

Habs makes sense but always surprises me because they aren’t necessarily a large market.

Like the Habs being more valuable than the Kings is kinda crazy to me. LA (just the city) is 3.86 million people. Montreal is 1.7 million. Toronto, just the city, 2.7 million.

  8. as soon as McDavid is gone, Oilers will lose all value. on the other side, Leafs will double

  9. And that’s why the quality of the product on the ice is a secondary concern. They have name recognition, an owned arena on prime real estate in one of North America’s biggest markets, and a “fan” base that will buy premium tickets for status rather than entertainment.

  10. On one hand, pretty dsmn impressive considering revenues are collected in a much weaker CAD.

On the other hand, it shows the relative popularity of hockey in the U.S. vs Canada with 3 of the top 5 being Canadian teams.

Hockey is the clear #4 in the U.S.

  11. Surprised to see Edmonton so high as most of their value is probably derived from having a depreciating asset in McDavid as he ages.

They don’t have the fan base, TV contract or market size to sustain numbers with the other big boys here

  12. This is why other teams hate us. They don’t understand how we can be worth so much and still so popular when we’re complete dogshit while their poverty franchise sits atop the standings lol.

  13. Enough about what the last 10 years worth of rosters has cost us with 0 Stanley Cups to show for it

  14. Oilers were at 440 mil value just 9 years ago. Leafs were at 1.1 billion. That’s a wild climb for Edmonton. What having mcdavid does for a team I guess.

  15. So many idiots who don’t follow the rest of the NHL and don’t understand how popular the Habs are.

  16. 4.3 billion and only have to put $100 mil towards the cap. Leaf fans still getting robbed. Keep supporting folks

  17. You missed the asterisk beside the Leaf logo. Says “Note: fans are idiots and will pay enormous amounts of money to watch matches regardless of the quality of the product.”

  18. I don’t know if anyone else watched the video, but they call the Oilers the Edmonton oilanders at one point. ,

  19. Doubt they’ll be in top spot next year. Missing the playoffs costs like $10M+, will be a big drop in profits.
