New Orleans Saints Fans Can STOP FREAKING OUT About This

Saints fans, we can stop freaking out about this. Jawan Johnson has been much, much better than a lot of the fan base has been giving him credit for, and I’m going to prove that and explain my take here in today’s video. You’re watching Saints Now by Chat Sports. As always, I’m your host, Trisy Trace Gerard. Hope you all are having a wonderful Thanksgiving week and I hope you guys have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. First things first, I want to address the obvious here. I want to make something explicitly clear. Jawan Johnson at the beginning of the season was terrible. He was not consistent. He was dropping passes and he wasn’t somebody that was reliable in this offense. And it was especially frustrating considering the contract that he signed in the off season. So, when it comes to Jawan Johnson, I can understand why the fan base, even me, were super frustrated with his usage and his production earlier in the season. But as we’ve progressed and especially since Tyler Shuck has taken over, we’ve seen Jawan Johnson’s numbers increase in a major way. His total production for this season, you see it on screen, he has seven total drops. I know that that’s a number that’s really frustrating, but I feel like that’s a number that has gone down significantly over the last few weeks. And not to knock the quarterback play specifically, but we saw big issues with drops when Spencer Rattler was throwing the football across the board. However, since Tyler Shuck has taken over, I personally believe he throws a more catchable ball. We’ve seen that be true since he’s taken over and there’s been a less of a drop issue. Now, I think we can stop freaking out about Jawan Johnson. Again, the three-year $30 million contract, that was something that a lot of fans and a lot of people were clowning him for and clowning the Saints for and trying to dunk on him and all that stuff, but you know, the reality is it’s not even top 10 among all tight ends in terms of average money. Like, it’s right there in the middle. So, in terms of paying him money, you’re paying him average money right now to be an average tight end. And for what it’s worth, he’s playing at an above average level right now. He’s tied for fourth in receiving yards among all tight ends. And look, throughout his career, he has been a player that has had highs, it has had lows, but the theme has been inconsistency. And with Jawan Johnson, that’s been the thing for me is I want to see him be consistent, put together multiple stretches of good weeks, not just a couple here and there, not just a strong performance at the beginning, not just a strong performance at the end. We are in the back half of the season, but I do believe we’re starting to see a little bit better production and a little bit more consistency from Jawan Johnson. I think a big part of that is the chemistry he has with Tyler Shuck. And look, Jawan Johnson is second in receiving yards for the New Orleans Saints. And I know that this isn’t really anything to be celebrating, but I will tell you right now, considering all of the weapons and all the options and all of the things that the New Orleans Saints have at their disposal on their offense or had at their disposal on the offense, Jawan Johnson has been somewhat of a bright spot in my opinion. and he’s been a really good safety blanket for Tyler Shuck in some of those moments where he’s had to create plays, especially in that Carolina game a few weeks ago before the buy. So, let’s pump the brakes on the Jawan Johnson slander. I don’t think that he’s somebody who deserves all the hate that he’s been getting. I don’t think he’s somebody who is getting enough credit for the development and the growth that he’s had. I trust in Kell more and I want to see this player develop and pan out into a much better player than what we’ve seen over the last few years. And I think that we’re starting to get there with Jawan Johnson. And among tight ends, guess what? He’s tied for sixth in catches, tied for fourth in receiving yards. In yards per catch, he’s fifth, and he is seventh in touchdowns. So, he’s top 10. He’s a top 10 tight end. And I know that you’re sitting here, well, you know, all the tight ends, yada yada yada, this that and the other. We’re still not getting good production. Look, I I think that when you consider the money he’s making, 13th in annual money per year, and he’s a top 10 tight end, you are more than cashing in on Jawan Johnson’s contract. And I think, like I’ve said, Johnson has looked really good with Tyler Shuck. Some of the plays that stand out to me, specifically most of them are in the Carolina game because of the way that Jawan Johnson found open space. Tyler Shuck created opportunities for the offense, hits Shuck or hits Johnson downfield and either goes for a huge gain or got six. And against Atlanta, it wasn’t as prominent, but I do believe that he’s a player who still is making an impact on a regular basis for the New Orleans Saints. Now I want to ask you who that nation whether it’s onfield production or the information that I just shared or maybe it’s my take has your opinion on Jawan Johnson changed whether it’s for better or for worse give me a yes give me a no in the comment section and I want to have a conversation with you now coming up you need to get more production out of the tight ends you need to get more versatility you need to get more usage you need to get more out of the tight end room and we’re going to talk about how the Saints can do that here in just a moment first things First, got to thank today’s presenting sponsor, and that is the number one daily fantasy app in the entire world, Price Picks. Guys, I’m going to be playing Prize Picks on Thanksgiving. Maddie has an awesome lineup cooked up, too. I’m going to share her lineup here in just a second. But, let me tell you about awesome deals that Prize Pix is offering. If you download the app today and use code CLNS, you’ll get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. With basketball back, I can now put Derek Queen and Chris Olive in the same lineup and root for both to ball out. Then, we got a new feature alert on prize picks. They now have early payouts. If your lineup gets off to a hot start, you may now have the option to cash out those winnings before the game even finishes. Now, Maddie is on a streak right now on prize pick. So, I got with her and I said, “I need you to help me out because your boy has not been winning a lot.” Maddie, on the other hand, she’s been cashing in big time thanks to prize picks. For Thanksgiving, we’re going the more Jared Goss passing yards, the more on Patrick Mahomes, and the less on Joe Burrow. One for each game, so that way we’re locked in all Thanksgiving. Shout out to prize picks where it’s always good to be right. Let’s take a look at the tight end room for New Orleans. Obviously, we have to address a few things. Joan Johnson, he’s tight end one. There’s no mystery around that. Foster Morrow, Jack Stole, both of those players are also on the roster. Feel like we haven’t seen a ton from Foster Morrow this year. Jack Stole on the other hand has been contributing at a decent level. And Zire Peyton Mitchell, he is a player who recently joined the New Orleans Saints. And we know Taesm Hill is just not a true tight end. And it’s interesting to consider how the Saints line up in terms of their personnel each week. Now, through 12 weeks, you can see that the New Orleans Saints are not utilizing two tight end sets all that much. However, they’re going with the 11 personnel at an extremely high rate. That’s first in the National Football League. And so, when it comes to the tight end situation, you’re only having one of those on the field at any given time for 77% of plays. So, moving forward, I don’t think it would hurt to try to get an extra tight end on the field. But the question is, who would that be? Now, Foster Morrow obviously is the first one that comes to mind, but he has been virtually non-existent since returning from his injury, and I don’t want to knock the player too much, but I feel like the utilization of Foster Morrow has been severely down. Only 149 total snaps this year. 95 of those were in run blocking, 14 were in pass blocking, and 40 were passing plays where he was out there. So, with Foster Morrow, I feel like he just hasn’t been on the field that much. I feel like he hasn’t really been given a ton of opportunities and it’s a shame because I really like Morrow and I think that he’s an awesome leader for this offense. However, you do need to find a way to get production out of the tight end room and if it’s not going to be Foster Morrow, next guy up, it’s Jack Stole. And look, it’s actually interesting. Remember Morrow only 149 snaps. Stole has 159 snaps on the year. 99 run blocking, 25 pass blocking, and 35 in the pass. He’s been good for one touchdown this year. And I don’t think that Jack Stole is a player that’s gonna absolutely light up the stat sheet. He’s not gonna be somebody who has this huge gamechanging impact on the Saints offense, but I do believe that the Saints need to get more out of the tight end room. So, what do you do? I think that you just kind of have to roll with the what you got for right now and add tight ends in the offseason. Like I I personally believe the best Kell Moore offenses have been when the tight end position is very very productive or at least pretty productive and you have a solid rushing attack as well. So how do we address this? Well, two ways. I personally would not trade for a tight end. I would rather go and draft or sign one this off seasonason. So in terms of top tight ends in the draft, any of these five players doesn’t matter, don’t care. Would be happy with them. Kenyan Sadique out of Oregon. He’s a dog. Eli Sters is a receiving threat like I’ve never seen before. I think he would be elite in the New Orleans Saints offense. Max Claire, Jack Andre, some do it all tight ends that could definitely provide a little extra juice. And Michael Trigg out of Baylor has been somebody who has been putting together a pretty nice season for the Bears. Now, in terms of free agency, if you said, “All right, I don’t want to draft one. I’d rather use it on a receiver or a running back or a lineman or something on the defense. Let’s go sign one. I mean, you could or you don’t have to. Like, nothing against anybody on the screen here, but Kyle Pittz, no, I’m good. I I’m I’m totally okay with it. Dallas Goddard’s interesting considering he won a Super Bowl with Kell Moore. That could be a a fun one to potentially bring in. Uh David and Jooku, I think he’s a very highlevel tight end. I would love to see him in New Orleans. I think that he would be a fun player. And fun fact, I actually talked to him in New Orleans during Super Bowl week. Said he was a huge fan of Gumbo. Uh Tyler Higgby, he’s 32 years old over with the Rams right now. Mark Andrews, he’s another option. Travis Kelce is also a free agent, but I think he’s just going to retire. Like, at the end of the day, the Saints need to address tight end this off seasonason. You’re gonna need to add one. And in terms of making it work this year, I think you got to find a way just to kind of keep Jawan Johnson getting targets. He’s your best option at the tight end position. So, I think when it comes to freaking out on that player and freaking out around the situation in the tight end room, I think we can pump the brakes a little bit because Joan Johnson has been playing at a much higher level. He has been playing a a better football over the last few weeks. And I do think when you talk about this season the best option, just keep on feeding JJ and add one in this off seasonason. So name a tight end that you think the New Orleans Saints should bring in. Draft free agency. If you want to trade for one, I don’t care. Just let me know. And if you are trading for one, feel free to throw the compensation in as well. My name is Trizy Trace Gerard. Thank you so much for tuning in to this edition of Saints Now by Chat Sports.
