The Vancouver Canucks Are At Rock Bottom – w/ Jeff Paterson

Jeff Patterson from Rinkwide Vancouver and Kucks Army joins us. Vancouver in the news as always, JPAT. So, we appreciate you giving us some time here and you know, a handful of reports over the last couple of days that the Canucks are open for business. A lot of their veterans can be had. I want to start with the timing of this. It’s the end of November. What did you make of, you know, this all coming out at this point in the season? Well, listening to you break down those Oilers miscues. I I was sort of having flashbacks to Sunday night against Calgary or pick a game this season uh that’s involved. The Vancouver Conucks, the Oilers giving up eight last night. I know now they’ve given up more goals than anybody in the NHL. Uh Canucks still maintain the crown though on a per game basis. They are the most permissive team in the NHL. So, uh the timing doesn’t strike me. The Canucks were dreadful on Sunday at home against the Calgary Flames who had played the night before. Flames coming in and skate circles. The Flames skated circles around the Canucks in their own building. Uh the home record is atrocious. They have three wins in 11 games, just two regulation wins on home ice. Uh the fan base is getting restless. And so I think it sort of all came home to roost on Sunday that if you can’t even compete with the Calgary Flames. What are we doing here? Uh this is a flawed team. It was poorly constructed. There were massive hope bets placed on Thatcher Demco and Philip Pedle and neither one of those guys made it to the 20 game mark. And uh yeah, they’ve had injuries, but injuries are happening around the National Hockey League. There are other teams with more important players out of their lineups. Uh bottom line is they tried to plug the Philip Heedle 2Chole with Lucas Reichel, a winger who couldn’t cut it in Chicago and they plugged him into the middle. He played 12 games and had one point. That experiment’s over. And so what’s the answer? They go out and they claim David Camp off the scrap heap, who couldn’t make the Toronto Maple Leafs, never profiled as an offensive guy. they’ve plugged him in as a second line setter between Brock Besser and Connor Garland. So, I mean, it all comes back to just complete mismanagement and flawed uh a flawed game plan. And again, these bets that were placed on players that I think we all knew were going to run into injury issues. Uh it all adds up to them being a 30th place team and a team that at the outset believed it had legitimate playoff aspirations. So, I think it’s all sort of come back to this notion now as they head out on a four-game road trip to California and Colorado. Uh, the time has come to change their course. Jeff, you know, I think the injury bug is such an easy cop out for a team to take, right? Like, it’s professional hockey. There’s always injuries, you know, and teams play through it all the time and find ways to do it. But that being said, they’re on a four-game road trip, right? They got Anaheim, San Jose, the two young teams that are generating a lot of offense, playing well. Then you got LA and Colorado. It doesn’t get any easier. And this is without Kevin Lanken and without Thatcher Demco. Like is Kevin Lankman going to be able to join? I know it’s for personal reasons, but who is going to are we going to see Yuri Peter? Like what else do we see? And is this kind of this last four game road trip? If this goes real south, is that where the sell-off really starts to happen? Well, tomorrow is US Thanksgiving. And we all know that’s a benchmark in the National Hockey League. And again, the Canucks 30th in the NHL standings. Uh you have your gear handy, Carter? uh because they’re going out on this road trip with their third and fourth string goalenders that have a combined nine games of NHL experience uh going into Anaheim uh and as you said the California teams and then the trip wraps up in Colorado and who knows where the ABS win streak will be by the time the Canucks roll into Denver. Uh so Nikita Tolapilo is a 25year-old Bellar Russian monster in size a guy that played in his first NHL game late last year. Uh I think he’s ahead of Peter. Peter made one start the other day in Florida, gave up seven. Uh team was dreadful in front of him. So it’s not all on the goalender in that case, but uh I think they want to see what Nikita Tolapilo can do. So my sense is he’ll get the start tonight in Anaheim and probably get one of these next two games backtoback against San Jose and Los Angeles. But uh unless Lankin enjoins the team and you know, we’re at a point of time. It’s personal reasons. I don’t think anybody here is prying. You hope for the best for him and he’s got a young family. Uh all we know is he didn’t travel, but it’s a California trip. It’s two-hour flight if he gets clearance to rejoin the hockey club. You know, he may not play tonight, but he could be there for Friday uh in San Jose. So, that’s sort of the best case scenario is that Kevin Lankin is not gone for long. Uh regardless though, they’ve got to push on. And to your earlier point about injuries, like yeah, they’ve got some injuries, but right now Derek Forbert is their only defenseman that’s out of the lineup. Uh he’s a depth guy who probably wouldn’t be an every night player anyhow. Would help their penalty kill, but you can’t say that, you know, the worst team defensively in the National Hockey League is leaning that much, missing Derek Forbert that heavily. Uh guy should be in for a massive raise if he’s that important to the Vancouver Conucks. Uh and then up front, you know, Teddy Bluger’s out of the lineup. Again, penalty killer but a depth forward. Um, otherwise it’s just been really difficult for this group to uh adjust to what Adam Foot is asking them to do defensively. And look, Adam Foot was one of the best defenders in the game during his prime. Uh, he has a way he believes the game should be played, a way he wants his team to be played, but the proof’s in the pudding that they’re not playing uh to this coach’s system. So, does the system have to change uh or is it the personnel that has to change? And ultimately, it sounds now like management is prepared uh to start moving off some of the pieces that they have put in place here. I I liked the the tweet you you sent out the other day kind of talking about that Anaheim Ducks rebuild and like yes, it took a long time and they ripped it down to the studs, but there was direction there. There was a mandate to like get younger. It’s going to suck for a few years, but in the long run, we’ll build this into a Stanley Cup contender. Do you get the sense that the fan base, like I didn’t read through the replies on the tweet, is the fan base willing to accept that kind of a rebuild that involves trading off uh Quinn Hughes and gulping and saying it’s going to be, you know, shitty for 5 years, but at least we’ll have direction. Is the fan base willing to accept that or do they want to see this franchise try to quickly turn it around and keep Hughes in the mix and all the things like that? No. The vast majority is so tired of this team cutting corners and trying to find quick fixes. Uh, look, it’s been since 2013. Um, I mean, it’s 2025, that’s a dozen years, and they’ve won what, two playoff series in that time. Uh, I used Anaheim as an example because in 2017, the Ducks got to the Western Final, the Western Conference final, lost, got to the playoffs the next year, and then went seven years without the playoffs, but look at them now. And they haven’t won anything yet. Let’s be clear about that. But they look like they’re on their way. Uh, I think really this season where things got a little ugly here in Vancouver, Chicago came in here. Connor Badard, North Vancouver kid, born raised six blocks from my house. In fact, um, obviously first overall, uh, but has finally come into his own. But the Blackhawks came in here and beat the wheels off the Vancouver Conucks. The Blackhawks won Stanley Cups through the teens as late as 2015, bottomed out, and here they are again on their way back up. And so it’s these teams that have had championship success, taken a huge step back, and now are on the path again. Meanwhile, the Canucks just spinning their wheels, cutting corners, making trades for Olive Recman Larson, and then buying him out, and he’s going to be on the books till 2030. Um, you know, on and on it goes. And through it all, uh, not good enough, nowhere close to good enough. And that one 50 win 109 point season of a couple years ago, clearly an outlier now. It was everybody was healthy. Everybody had career bests that they haven’t been able to match again. And so, you know, there are some pieces here, but they’ve kept this core together. And ultimately, there’s been very little playoff success. The one playoff round victory against Nashville and then taking the Oilers to game seven in the second. Uh, no, people here are absolutely ready. It’s ownership and the management groups that uh again keep thinking that they can turn this thing and rebuild it on the fly. And ultimately, you look where they are in the standings right now and it just feels like they are uh years away still. And and so I think everybody here is ready for the capital R rebuild. So when I think about being ready and I think about a team selling off pieces that need to be sold off. Do you add Quinn Hughes into that factor? This is a defenseman who’s played 451 games. He’s got 430 points. He’s one of the best defenseman in the NHL. Like where how big of a rebuild do you think this is? Because his name has been rumored. It’s been swirling. Like where in all seriousness he is he a guy that gets moved out of Vancouver? I’m in the camp that thinks he will finish his career elsewhere. Does that mean that the trade’s coming this season? Probably not. But they certainly can’t let him walk for nothing. And so at that point, it’s a question of who’s got their hands on the wheels, who’s in control, uh who is ownership trusting to make this trade. You probably don’t win this kind of trade, right? Generally, when you punt on a superstar, uh you’re going to get pieces back, but they’re not going to add up to the level that Quinn Hughes has played at. Quinn Hughes owes this organization nothing. Like the organization has failed Quinn Hughes. Uh they haven’t been able to build around the best defenseman and one of the best players in franchise history. And so he’s got the brothers. We know that. But I think more than anything, he’s 26 now. He wants to win. And so I can’t blame Quinn Hughes. If he’s got his eye somewhere else and has a foot out the door here, um you know, they can throw all the money in the world at him. And I think they will. Uh, I mean that’s their one sort of hail Mary is that uh they can offer him eight years still under the current CBA and nobody else can do that. You know, eight by 18 million. Is that enough to get his attention? It should be, but he’s going to get his money wherever he goes, right? Like uh even if other teams can’t go eight years with him, he’s still getting paid on his next contract. So, uh, I won’t begrudge Quinn Hughes at all if he decides that, uh, the grass is greener elsewhere and he wants to go explore an opportunity where he can win a whole lot sooner than it can happen here. Um, and so it’s desperate times. It’s desperate measures, but ultimately, uh, I do think that Kuck fans are going to have to brace for a a Quinn Hughes deal at some point. I just don’t know when that timing is. One more really quick before we let you go. the the more likely names to be moved in the next however many days would be, you know, Kefir Sherwood of Evander Kane. I’ve heard a little bit about Tyler Myers as well. Is there one situation on this roster where you think, you know, Rutherford and Alvine will maybe jump sooner rather than later and and look to move someone out, maybe cash in on some value? Like I look at Sherwood is value, I mean, traditionally what he is as a player is a guy who’s going to get you somewhere in the teens and goals. He’s almost there already. Like to me it would make sense but you know let’s cash in on this sooner rather than later. Uh I think every team that’s headed for the playoffs should take a long hard look at Kefir Sherwood. This guy eats balls. He plays hard. He scores. I think he’s got way better skill than uh he was ever given credit for. Has taken advantage of an opportunity. Leads the NHL in hits. He did last year as well with the 19 goals. Like I I think he would be a really compelling piece to any team that has designs on going on some sort of run in the playoffs. So, I I think the Canucks have to do their best to create a bit of a bidding war. Uh I do wonder if they touch a guy like Connor Garland. They recommitted to him. He’s got a six-year extension in his back pocket. He’s playing the final year of a deal at 5 mil. Plays hard. Uh there’s enough offense there. Again, if you were looking to beef up sort of your third line, your middle six, I think Connor Garland would be a nice ad for any team there. And again, this is a guy that’s played in Arizona and Vancouver. I would think he would want a, you know, a taste of of winning and playoff hockey. So, uh, I don’t know what, if anything, they could get for Evander Kane. We’re at the end of November. He doesn’t have a five on five goal yet this season. Uh, leads the team in penalties. That’s all part of the Evander Kane experience. But, um, you know, that’s part of this, too, is that how deep do the cuts go? And ultimately, how much value do they have? How much can they extract from other teams? I think Sherwood could return you something. I think Garland could. After that, you’re looking at sort of depth pieces that might get you some mid-round draft picks here or there. Uh, doesn’t exactly scream rebuild, I don’t think. Yeah, and that’s fair as well. Uh, JPAT, as always, appreciate your time. Thanks for popping on. All right, keep that gear handy, Carter. They may be calling. 1. I dont always agree with J-Pats opinion, which tends to be negative commentary 9 times out of 10. That said, the man is spitting facts right there!

  2. Forget the Canucks, sports-nyet is the robber. Charge for games, app crashes, then says game is blacked out, then its not, then it is. What JUNK.

Never again will I pay my money to those fu€ktatd rip off artists. The pirate sites are better! Snorts-bet is a JOKE. Their craptastic "stream" was more like pi$$ing in your face while you wonder why the game you were JUST WATCHING is suddenly "blacked out".

Shorts-shΒ‘t made me cancel. The Canucks made me not regret it.

IDGAF what you talking heads say. Especially that joke in tne middle.

  3. You can not win a war without winning battles. This road trip is on Coach Foote. A good coach can work with very little and instill confidence or shake things up. Aqualini purchased the Canucks in 2007 for $200 million as investors. The Canucks are currently allegedly worth $2.2 billion usd today if they sold. The 3 options are "Sell and wipe hands", "Step in", "Rinse and repeat". Vancouver Canucks bring in 17th best income in league (average). As an investor and owner it will be a hard decision either way. Vancouver deserves better.
