Panthers-49ers Reaction: Brock Purdy & Bryce Young struggle on MNF | Colin Cowherd NFL

All right, it’s official. Uh, San Francisco beats Carolina 20 to9. I had Carolina plus 7 tonight. Um, listen, San Francisco tried to give the ball away. San Francisco right now is not a very good team. Um, I don’t have them as a top 10 team. I think the coaching staff has done a remarkable job. I mean, even Christian McCaffrey, he he, you know, he can’t average four and a half yards a pop. Um, Robert Solo is doing it with smoke and mirrors. Solo is going to get a head coaching opportunity. You know, he’s got charisma. He’s got some alpha. He’s had he’s done an unbelievable job. No Bosa, no Warner. They lost, you know, Green Lawn, Hunga in the offseason. It’s really a bunch of kids and they play they play their ass off and uh there’s just so many different angles tonight. Let’s just start with Brock Pury. I don’t think Brock Pur’s 100%. Uh two of his first half interceptions he had three. Two were the identical interception. The ball had no velocity. The ball hung in the air. The ball was behind the receiver. They just were duplicate interceptions. That tells me he can’t drive the ball. But M. Jones was playing well. Shanahan wants Pretty back in because with Pury, you can move the pocket. So, it allows more plays and more mobility from a quarterback position. Mack is simply a pocket quarterback. Pretty moves better. So, Shanahan wants Pretty. Pretty wants to play because he wants to play as a pro alete. M. Jones is playing well. So, they bring him back. And I don’t think he’s 100% healthy. Go look at the first two interceptions by Brock Pury. No velocity. Ball hangs in the air. Both balls thrown behind the receiver. It’s like it’s like a an old pitcher that doesn’t have his fast ball that’s throwing 92, not 98. So, I don’t think pretty can step into it. I don’t think’s healthy. But again, it’s the NFL. Not everybody’s healthy. Uh, and also when Brock Pury took over the Niners in his first 20 starts, he had 114 passer rating, 40 touchdowns, and 13 picks. The roster was more complete, right? You just had a more stacked roster. Well, Denver has San Francisco has moved off players and now the roster is got injuries. You know, your your Iayuk’s not available. Ricky Piol’s been gone. He was back tonight. In the last 20 starts, including tonight, Brock Party’s last 20 starts, 30 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, and a passer rating that’s equal to Tua. And what did I always call Brock Pury? A right-handed Tua. a little mobility, not a big arm. Uh little injury prone. Uh Tua, don’t trust him in cold weather. Brock Pertie’s had ball security issues in wet weather. It’s the same guy. It it really is. I think Tua throws a more accurate ball consistently. I think Pertie’s a little bit better athlete uh and and a much more aggressive thrower of the football. But in the last 20 starts with injuries and you have to move off people because you’re paying Pury and other people. Now, Brock Pur’s a mid90 mid90 passer rating guy with injuries. Um, that’s what he is. Don’t don’t don’t shoot the messenger. That’s that’s what he is right now. Uh, and he just gave that game, put it in Bryce Young’s hands. Uh, I think Dan Morgan’s a very good general manager for Carolina. And, uh, uh, Dave Canales I think’s really bright. I think you’re pretty limited with Bryce Young. I don’t think he’s terrible. Uh he’s got nice mobility, but he’s small. And I’ll give you an example. So Bryce Young plays at a a powerhouse high school in California. He’s protected. He’s got 15 division one players on the team, right? He entered every game with the best team and a legendary high school coach. Then he goes to Alabama. He’s got a legendary coach. He’s got the best roster. Then he goes to Carolina. And this is often, you know, what we see in the NFL. He didn’t really live an NFL life in high school or college. It’s not realistic. He was carried. He was he he kind of managed games. He was very statistically impressive in both high school, especially in high school and college. But then he goes to a bad NFL team and now he’s got to carry him and he doesn’t have that talent. He’s not a big athlete. He’s he’s got mobility, but he’s not hyper athletic. His arm is pretty average. Um, you know, he’s okay. He’s a guy. And, you know, there was a interception he threw in the end zone. Uh, it was one of the first series. It was after his uh secondary made a really nice pick and he throws a pick in the red zone in which as Troy Aman said he could have just ran it in easily. So he’s just a guy. So I think in these upcoming drafts, the next two drafts, I think Dan Morgan’s going to go out and draft another quarterback. I mean, you can keep telling yourself he’s the guy, but you know, would you trust Bryce Young? And and I think they did a nice job in the draft to upgrade their defense. I really do. I think Dan Morgan’s a sharp guy. I know people that know him and respect him. Uh former player, uh the defense he inherited was awful. Uh he’s done a nice job to hitting some draft picks. Uh uh JC Horn’s a great great corner. Um two of their young corners, really talented. Both got hurt tonight. But um I I think you have to just look in the mirror and be totally honest. Bryce Young looks like to me a bridge starter in the NFL. Not a guy I’d build around. not necessarily a backup, but kind of that Jameus Winston. He’s a totally different quarterback than Jameus Winston, but sort of a bridge quarterback. You can put him in for a year or two, but I’m not building around Bryce Young. Um I I just you know it the small quarterback thing I I think to some degree you know Russell Wilson got a lot of guys got drafted but increasingly you know the Kyler Murray’s and the Johnny Manzels and the Bryce Young’s and the you know it just it just too many big strong talented athletes playing the position and you know it was funny when when when Brock Pretty was throwing interceptions people were like well Sam Darnold threw an intercept. Sam Darnold’s a much bigger, stronger, better arm than Brock Purie, better athlete than Brock Purie. He’s more talented than Brock Purie. He was a first round quarterback. Sam Darnold’s a really good quarterback. Okay, if you take out the Jets, go to Carolina winning record, Minnesota winning record, Seattle on fire. Darnold’s a real He’s a He’s a top 12 starter in the NFL. Sam Darnold is uh I mean, look at his PFF number last year. Look at it this year. when you give him a good coach, when you give him capable weapons, Sam Darnold’s really talented. Uh Brock Pretty has a great coach, a legendary left tackle, George KD, and one of the top five running backs I’ve ever seen. And in his last 20 starts, he’s a guy. Um but that’s, you know, that’s your guy. That’s what you’re saddled with. He runs the plays Kyle designs. And you know, Kyle’s not going to bang on him. I mean, but you you noticed in the second half, it didn’t feel like they were throwing the ball down the field much. they were throwing the ball to George KD and underneath. That’s what it felt like to me, which is good coaching by Kyle Shanahan. So, um, you know, kind of in retrospect, I just think the Rams right now are the best team in the league. Seattle feels like a top five team in the league. Arizona, as usual, is hopeless. San Francisco’s got a good GM and a good coach and a solid quarterback play, legendary running back and tight end. Um, but they’re gonna lose Robert Salah because I think one of the stories of the year has been the quality of coaching by Salah doing it with absolute smok and mirrors. I mean, just a bunch of kids. And you know, Bryce Young, the reason I took Carolina, Bryce Young had been playing pretty well. He really had. He been playing pretty well. But, uh, Salah dialed up some blitzes tonight. And I always think this, the ultimate sign of disrespect to a quarterback is when a defensive coordinator blitzes. Nobody blitz Brady. Nobody blitzes Mahomes. It Pton Manning was begging you to blitz him. The greats love you to blitz. You blitz a quarterback who can’t handle it. You blitz a quarterback and are willing to put everybody on an island in the back end because you don’t think the quarterback can beat you. So, when Robert Saul is dialing dialing up blitzes, he’s like, “Yeah, I I see the tape. I don’t You’re not going to beat us.” T-Mac’s a very good receiver. Legette’s also a big-time body. T-Mac’s got a catch the ball problem, but he’s a really talented guy. But I think Robert Salah with a bunch of kids. I mean, it’s not a an experienced with a bunch of kids is like, “I’m going to do some blitzing. Beat me. See if you can beat me.” We don’t think he can. I also think in these standalone games, this is just a note. This is just a little psychology. Um, Brock Pury, um, standalone games matter because it’s the only game and everybody in the league watches it. Everybody in the league watches it. And I’ve always felt Brock Pretty in Monday Night Football is a little more reckless. He’s sort of trying to prove I am worth the money. You know what Brock Pretty is officially on Monday Night Football? Five touchdowns, 11 picks, and a 75 passer rating. well below his career average. I I feel like Monday Night Football, guys shrink. Bryce Young tonight shrinks. Carolina doesn’t get these standalone games. Bryce Young shrinks. Game is handed to him. Shrinks. Brock Pretty trying way too hard. It’s Monday Night Football. Three picks in the first half and two were atrocious. All three were bad. Two were atrocious. So, but San Francisco wins. Really good coaching. And you know, Carolina’s a a second, third tier franchise. You know, you know, I’ve criticized Buffalo because I don’t think the franchise is holding up their end of the deal for Josh Allen. Carolina, it’s the opposite. I think Dan Morgan and Dave Canales are really, really good. Uh, you know, I love drafts. I think Morgan’s done a really nice job. Some real hits. And I think, you know, I I think with Bryce Young, you know, maybe you can maybe you can be a wildcard team in the NFC South. That’s what it feels like to me. You know, I mean, you watched it. If you get three first half turnovers, got to win the game against a young young defense without their two biggest stars. You got to win the game. It’s just no that that’s that that’s a W. Um and Carolina couldn’t do it. So there you go. Monday Night Football. Today’s show brought to you by our new presenting sponsor, Hard Rock Bet. There are three things to be thankful for this week. All right, I want to add another piece on the Lane Keifin story. So, the athletic director for Old Miss has said, “Listen, we got to have an answer after the Egg Bowl this Friday, Joel Clatt, who I love, but Joel Clatt has come out and said, “Well, Lane Keifin is going to lose credibility if he leaves.” Timeout. Credibility in college football is winning. Lane Keifin basically Sabin kicked him off his staff. He bolted Tennessee. He got fired on a tarmac. Got fired in the NFL. He’s the hottest coach in the country. Why? He wins games. He’s a really smart offensive coach. Nobody cares about that. Everybody knows college football is it’s like unre it’s like Bitcoin. It’s unregulated. It’s every man for himself. No centralized bank. I mean, Fox and ESPN have taken the sport over. That’s what college football is. It’s Bitcoin. It’s It’s people that love it, myself included, very passionate about it. People very tribal about it. Uh very parochial about it. Absolutely sure it’s the future. Absolutely sure it’s better than the NFL. I mean, reputation. Just win games and you’ll get job offers. And Lane Kein’s the number one. the number one currently higher in the sport. He is I mean he is in the NFL the the Chargers when they had Herbert and there was an opening and they fired their coach. The Chargers were the number one opening in the sport and Jim Harbaugh went I’m leaving right like you get these rare opportunities. Aaron Rogers in his prime Mike McCarthy gets fired. Green Bay is a great job. And then you get these these great coaches who are available to the market. And it doesn’t happen very often, but you know, occasionally Mike Vrabel is available to the market. New England’s like, “Yeah, you know, you don’t get a lot of Mike Vrabel.” Shawn Payeyton broadcast wants to go back into coaching. You don’t get a lot of Shawn Payton’s on the market in college. Lane Keifin on the market is Shawn Payeyton on the market in the NFL. Big-time offensive coach, highly creative, respected by recruits. You can’t reputation. What does that mean? I mean, everybody knows Jimmy Ston runs the sport. You know, he’s he’s the he’s the the kingmaker behind the scenes pulling all the strings. And the bottom line is, I mean, LSU doesn’t care about Old Miss. LSU doesn’t care about anybody but Old Miss. That’s the way college football works. NFL is different. You can’t just raid teams in the middle of a season. So, I don’t blame I said this today on FS1. If you don’t have regulations on Wall Street or Silicon Valley or our tax system, aggressive people are going to go forward. I mean, college football allows all this. What you expect everybody to have manners? Lane Keifin to just wait and twiddle his thumbs and let somebody else get these $14 million a year jobs. If you don’t put regulations up, Lane Keven’s like LSU is one of the top three, four jobs in the country. I want to take it. Old Miss is like 18th best, 15th best, somewhere around there. Right? So, it’s I mean, just in the SEC alone, Texas better job. I’d argue Oklahoma’s a better job, LSU’s a better job, Bama’s a better job, Florida’s a better job. Did I say Georgia? What What are we at six or seven? And then then I mean, Lane Kein has made Old Miss. Miss didn’t make Lane Keifin. So, I mean, literally Nick Sabin changed the way he saw football when Lane Keifin was on his staff. Lane started at practice working Sabin’s defenses. And so, I can score any way I want. The rules are all on my side now. So, the reality is pretty clear is that you can’t I just disagree with Joel Clatt. This whole thing about your reputation. Reputation is, you know what they say in baseball, momentum is the next day’s pitcher. Your reputation is the next Saturday on the slate. Do you win? Do you lose? That’s your reputation. And maybe it’s not perfect, but let’s not make this the Vatican. This is this is college football. It is it is boxing. It is Bitcoin. It’s unregulated. People don’t play even schedules. It’s every man for himself. Everybody’s tribal, you know. Um, and because of the wonky way college football works, if you want the job, what’s Lane supposed what’s LSU supposed to do? Wait for the playoffs. What if Miss wins three games? You’re sitting there wait You’re recruiting. What are we doing? You got to make moves, right? Change the recruiting period. Put in, as Nick Sabin said, it’s a college football conundrum. It’s not a keen issue. Put in I mean, it’s just like the NIL. Even the NFL has a free agent period. You know, you’ve got a recruiting period. You should have a coach hiring period at the end of the season. [Music]

  1. Colin – what’s Brock’s record on Thursday night? He beat an undefeated Philly, beat your Seattle TWICE and beat LA. So Brock is just fine in prime time.

  2. It takes a while to get back in the grove and reading defenses again. I'll bet in his third game back Purdy puts up a 300 yard game and Colin will just ignore it.

  3. How about a top 3 running back in the league only got 6 carries.. not because he was getting stuffed, he was getting 6 yards per carry. Thats on coaching and play calling

  4. The darnold love is a little too much. He is a very good qb however give Bryce young to Kyle and see how good Bryce would look lol. Darnold is good but let’s not pretend like he’s been this gigantic success he’s had 2 good years out of his entire career with a ton of bad ones. It took him forever why give him grace but not Bryce?

  5. Brock Simps will always point out Brock took the 9ers to a Super Bowl. Jimmy G did the same and look where he is now? Can any Brock simps tell me where Brock is better than Mac specifically? Is his processing better? Arm strength? Accuracy downfield? Accuracy in the red zone? Ability to fit the ball through tight windows? Is Brock better at protecting the ball? Can Brock simps point at at specific plays that Brock has made from the pocket that Mac will never be able to make? Ya I know Brock can scramble here and there but that often leads to Brock getting injured or him throwing an INT. Brock simps- please answer my questions

  6. Purdy runs an no NFL offence and leads the locker room 5x that of Tua. I would say pure talent is on par so I’d agree with you on that currently.

That said I’d pick Purdy over Tua in a big game 10/10 times over.

I’d compare Brock to Trevor Lawrence over Tua. Good leader, average arm, good play maker, makes mistakes but ultimately moves on to the next play after a mistake.

In the 4th quarter you could see Purdy wasn’t backing down, he had a more “alright let’s win this game” look, where you see Tua cracking on the bench in the same situation

  7. The worst thing about the niners situation is that no other team will take Purdys contract unless he turns around and balls out. I’d hate to see Mac leave and tear it up somewhere else

  8. Purdy is not good enough to put a team on his back. Kyle knows that, Kyle's ego thinks his play calling can overcome his limitations. And he's been able to do it more times than not. He will eventually win a SB it just probably won't be with Purdy.

  9. Tom Brady has a 3-1 record with three or more pics… in the playoffs.. that dudes pretty elite. Just sayin.

And do I think Purdy is elite, no. Do I think he can become elite, yes

  10. Tom Brady threw 39 interceptions in his first 40 games, based on data for his first 50 games which included 39 interceptions. While he had 0 interceptions in his rookie season, the total of 39 is the most accurate figure for his first 40 games as his first 4 seasons, which ended up being more than 40 games, resulted in 38 interceptions.
