Who should be Oilers dream target in goal?

with Mark Denny and Craig Button. Guys, there are a lot of names out there as people are attaching the possibilities to replace Skinner in the Edmonton Oiler Net. Mark, in a dream case scenario, who should be at the top of Edmonton’s list as the best fit for them? Obviously, like CJ told us on Insider Trading, names like Tristan Jarry may be more organic and natural to the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton market, but my dream target, my dream goalie is named Usay Saros. If there is a world where Saros is not the starting goalie for the Predators, I’m doing everything in my power to get Saros in an Oiler jersey. He’s in the first year of an 8-year contract, but it’s a manageable one. With the cap rising, eight goalies are making more money than Saros right now, which would make a lot of sense to do everything in my power to make that cap gymnastic work. Above and beyond anything here for the Edmonton Oilers, it’s a long-term commitment because let’s not forget this is not mission impossible. But if it was, Conor McDavid made sure that this message would autodestruct in about two and a half seasons. Well, when you talk about gymnastics, Conor McDavid has already given him flexibility to go forward with a youth sorrow contract, and that certainly is something that they have to keep in mind. But you could put Dominic Hashik in his prime in the Edmonton Oilers net right now and the defensive play of the Edmonton Oilers is so abysmal that they would still have significant problems. They might not be as evident, but the defensive play by the Edmonton Oilers is minor league. When you think about the woes that they have in and significant defensive metric, slot shots against, high danger chances against, rush chances against, which speaks to up the ice. It has nothing to do with goalending. The Oilers are at the bottom or right near the bottom of the league in that. If that doesn’t improve, it doesn’t matter who goes into the net. They’re not going to have success. So, while everybody can talk about the goalending and try to get a dream goalender in there, and you Saros is one of those guys that is a top-notch guy in my view. I agree with you, Mark. But the defensive play doesn’t improve, nothing’s going to really make a significant difference for their ultimate goal, which is competing for the Stanley Cup. And this is coming from former great management type in the NHL. The former goalie and me never looked past the mirror. I see no technical improvement in Steuart Sner’s game. Calvin Pickard cannot control his rebounds. That compounded with that poor defensive play. Obviously doesn’t help. But I’m telling you, Dominic Ashek would help any team on any day of the week if he was in there. and you say Saros may not be the dominator, but he’s in that category. What’s up for debate is who could replace Skinner. What’s not up for date clearly according to both of you is that Skinner needs to be replaced. Things are not all bad for the Oilers, though. They’re only two points out of a playoff spot. And the three teams right ahead of them right now, Sharks, Hawks, and Mammoth, all missed the playoffs by a mile last year.

The Oilers have allowed more goals than any other team in the league and are second form the bottom in goals allowed per game. Which netminder should be the dream target for Edmonton? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button and TSN Hockey analyst Marc Denis join Domino’s That’s Hockey to discuss.

  1. Skinner has great games and flashes of brilliance but can not be counted on. He’ll probably go to a lesser team and without the pressure have a few amazing seasons. Jack Campbell’s implosion didn’t help him much- but let’s remember that Edmonton has never had great defence or a really modern “system” they’re like flashy 80s hockey but under Knobloch it’s become a bit boring low event hockey. Everyone is deflated playing their worst except the new guys. We need a new goalie, a new coach, and a new system and shakeup to get the all world talent of McDrai and friends to another SCF! 🎉

  2. Bouchard should be the root cause for current Oilers' situation…10.5 mil paid but no defence and performance returned, Worst paid dman and Worst offensive dman in NHL right now 💀☠

  3. 4th most expensive D in league. Worst in so many metrics, with offense leading in time of possession (meaning if offense wasn't so good people would be scoring MORE).

80's called, they want their D back.

  4. Truth be told, Skinner and Pickard have been the best goalie tandem in the league for their cap hit for the last two years.

Should the Oilers get a new goalie? Yes! Do they have the cap space to upgrade to a better goalie? No!

  5. They should've gave Jack Campbell more of a chance. The dude had a bad first season and then got treated like dead weight. Skinner gets thrust into the starting position and here will are still talking about whether he's good enough to win with

  6. Agree with Button. Doesn't matter who you put in that net, they're still going to lose if they don't do something serious with that defense, and soon! Maybe they don't lose as bad, maybe they're 5-1 against Colorado instead of 9-1, or 5-3 against Dallas instead of 8-3, but they'll still lose.

And who are you going to ship to Nashville in return and how are you going to replace those pieces? What do you think Nashville's asking price is going to be? You really think they're going to just give him away? Do some kind of favor for the Oilers? Get real!! There are other teams looking to grab a good goalie and if Nashville does trade him, it's going to be a bidding war between whoever can offer the best return.

  7. Penguins fan here, but not knowledgeable of player values in hockey. What could the Pens realistically ask for in a Jarry trade? I am mostly asking about draft capital.

  8. Thanks for that Craig….truth be told for a change….yeah its all spinners fault when a team of playing d get scored on by 2 players and no one takes out a man….it's like their afraid they'll break

  9. Yes, the order should go after a goaltender. They have the team to do it to win a cop. It’s like years ago when Chevrolet was in Detroit and they traded for Vernon and they took off. It’s like the Oilers they get a goaltender they’ll takeoff.

  10. These 2 guys won’t make any difference. Defense playing like that. No goalie can save them.. not skating, not covering the right guy, not rough enough in front of net.

  11. For once Button is right. He changes his opinions like the days but hes right here. Coffey probably didnt get along with Knob because knobs showing zero passion

  12. The question is who is gonna be happy to come to Edmonton, just to watch their career numbers drop and then get blamed by fans and media for the team… theres what 200 ft of ice and there's problems defensively all over it… dont just blame the guy whos job it is to cover 5 ish ft of that…
