New York Islanders Postgame Availability | NYI vs PHI (11/28/25)

got to a slow start, but Paul Mary’s played, I guess, spot the whole thing. H, no kidding. What a gutsy effort from him on that. Um, going through a lot of pain. He’s one of the toughest teammates that I know. Um, takes a lot for him to to, you know, feel pain and get killed over, but you can also see how strong he is to to battle through a little bit there and make a huge play. That kind of that gave us a spark. Um, you know, I thought we gifted them a couple early and uh but we battled ourselves back and it’s too bad we just didn’t get an extra at the end of that uh form power play. What What do you think um you know as you go into the second period? What was said? I mean I mean we we our game as a whole minus a couple turnovers wasn’t that bad. So, you know, keep pushing at us. It’s going to be one of those nights that it’s always a grindy game against Philly. Um not a ton of pucks. You got to you really got to earn it. Um, so let’s just, you know, not get too frustrated. Um, there’s nights where, you know, things come easy, there’s nights where they don’t, and this is one of those ones we kind of just had to push through on it. All right. So, you don’t get the two points, but I know on this home stand, you want to start getting two points. 100%. Absolutely. Um, we feel good about our game right now. Um, you know, like like we’ve kind of already gone over, we spot him a couple early and have to earn our way back into this game to to pick up a point that, um, maybe after one didn’t look like was possible. and finally shaper. How good was he tonight? He’s great. He’s so good. Look, he um I thought, you know, the the little things that he’s been doing lately um all over the ice, you know, obviously you’re going to see his skill and his offensive and skating prowess, but I thought his his detail with his stick tonight was great. It was big block shot at the end there. Um little stuff like that. He he turns pucks over. Um and we’re going the other way. How do you evaluate the power play tonight? Well, it was good we got one. I mean, that was a a big moment for us to get one there uh to tie the game up, but you know, I think we would have liked to have a few of our plays back uh on the that fourminute. At the same time, we um you know, we got to bring that puck in and I think when we did that, we were getting pucks back and giving ourselves a chance, but had some good looks when our guys were shooting. You know, I liked our battle back. We were able to uh get a point out of it by tying it up. So, uh you know, you get down by three, it’s pretty tough, but uh we stuck with it. Was there anything at that point to keep you guys? We We know what we got to do. I thought we were playing well. I mean, after the first they two nothing lead and I think they had three shots on that. So, you know, a couple couple turnovers, couple plays that, you know, they were coming hard on us and they created. But, uh, no, I mean, that’s hockey. That’s part of it. Paul Mary’s effort on on that. Yeah, I was just saying I I mean I think everyone’s been in that position where you just want to get off the ice and something hurts or whatever’s going on and you know he stuck with it and made a pretty good play over. So it was pretty cool to see. Just how did Mitchell tonight? It was great. You know, for me it was just us going out there staying simple, talking a lot, communicating and you know, just making those right plays. We didn’t really have too much extended, you know, Dzone time, anything like that. So it was uh it’s always special getting your first game. Something he he’ll always remember and I think it played well. Yeah, I mean it is cool uh to do the rookie lap and everything like that. Um it’s pretty special especially when you have family in the building. So I mean a little bit of nerves kind of going out there like don’t know what to expect and uh but once you kind of get through it it’s all a bunch of fun. So can’t can’t complain one bit. Who’s in the building for you here tonight? Uh I had my mom uh dad sister and girlfriend. So it was good that they were able to make it. My parents traveled from Michigan and then um my girlfriend came back. She was at home for Thanksgiving. She hopped on a train to get back here and see the first game. So, it was pretty special. How did you feel kind of taking that first shift and how did you settle in as the game wore on? Yeah, I mean I feel like getting used to the NHL is the different than playing in the American League and playing college and everything like that. It’s just the ne it’s like the next step. So, uh just try to settle in, play my game, keep it simple, move pucks north. So, that’s what I just try to do and try to do it every shift. So, I know you’ve been recalled a couple times here. How did tonight’s game stack up to your expectations of your first game? Yeah, I mean definitely the other times I’d gotten called up, you know, it’s a little disappointing when you don’t get to play, but you’re just excited to be here and be a part of the team and everything that it’s about. So being able to actually finally kind of step out on that ice knowing that you’re going to play is pretty special and I wouldn’t wouldn’t change the world for it. Part of a pretty gutsy effort for your team to come back there. Of course, only getting the one point and in the extra frame there. Um but how how gritty was that game against Philadelphia? Yeah, I think they’re a good team and um I mean it was pretty cool to see our team battle back and we’re down three and come back and you wish you could get that extra point and get the win, but um it’s pretty good to get that one point and hopefully next time out we can get two. Patrick, things weren’t going your way obviously and then uh Paul Mary made an unbelievable play. How much did that spark the comeback? That was diff No doubt it was a great play by him. I mean knowing um that he’s been injured on the play. So it showed the the quality of a player he is and the person and it was pretty amazing. I I know the way you played after that you probably thought you deserve two points. How how tough was that you didn’t get the two points? I thought we played a really good game. I mean from the start to the end except for those two turn turnovers. I mean if we didn’t turn over those pucks I mean that probably be a very solid performance. Unfortunately, they’re part of the game, but um it was nice to score power play. It was nice to score three goals. It was nice to uh have the chances that we had and especially in overtime. I thought Bo had the game for us or even uh Einman. I thought it was in as well. A little lower would probably be in, but their goalie made those saves. So, um other than this, I mean, I I felt like I felt like we played a good game. Do do you have anything immediate on on pumps? No, you’ll see the doctor tomorrow, but I think everybody knows it’s doesn’t look very good. And just you go one for five on the power play, but you get that one goal. How how important can that be? Cuz it seemed like the movement was a little better, maybe the entries were a little better today. What did you thought Shabby brought some energy on that power play and and they were moving really well and um the end result was we had a body in front of the net and then there’s you know I think he hit his his leg and went in on something like that but I felt like that’s how we sometimes you have to do you got to throw pucks at the net and find a way to to you know get those rebound the other I thought in that four minute maybe we we could have thrown a little more pucks at the net with traffic in front. I mean, the one that we tried, I mean, hit hit their guy. They blocked those shots, which is what you try to do on P, I guess. Just what what did you see from Shabinoff today? Obviously, it was He was outanding. He was outstanding. Yeah, he was I mean, he um I thought that he brought some energy to the team. I mean, the way that he moves on the ice and he’s very shifty and um so it was nice to see see him play that way. I mean, um I thought that from the moment I put him with Bo and and and Iman Orvan and Iman, I thought that give that line like some energy. Like I just said, just in general, since he’s come back from the injury, how much more comfortable has he looked to you and and has anything seemed different about his game than earlier in the season? I I feel like I thought he had a really good game in Detroit. Um the two before, I mean, I think it takes time and and it’s just normal, but I I really feel like he’s um he’s getting more and more comfortable out there. And tonight was a good this a late this afternoon was a good good example. I know Riddick wasn’t the reason you guys were down three nothing. Was there any thought at all to maybe pull him? No. And what gave you the confidence that just to keep him in there that way could help you guys spark a comeback? The way we were playing I think we gave them only three shots in that first period. I thought we were playing a good game. I mean without those turnovers I mean we not give them much. I mean I think five on five we gave them like what seven chances. So we I fel really feel like five on five we’re playing and he made some great saves after that. So, I mean, and I know that David is a character guy and and and I was confident that he’d be bounce. It was he was not responsible for those two goals, first of all. I mean, it were good shots right right in inside post. And um but knowing him probably want to make one of those saves, which is normal. That’s what we do as a goalender. But, um but I didn’t felt he was responsible one bit. Do you go into the game knowing who your shooters would be if it would be in a shootout or does the game dictate who you would pick? No, we won last game against Seattle with that order. So, there’s no there’s no way we were going to change. We went second against Seattle. We won the game. Um, but when I saw I mean these guys I mean 66% of of in a shootout. I mean we knew we had a good challenge in front of us, isn’t it? But I thought Bull made a really good move. It was a phenomenal move by by Simon on that one. And I thought Bull made a great move as well. I mean, I think I thought he had him beat. I mean, it was just How did Travis Mitchell look to you in his debut? I felt he played well. Um, I’m sure he was very nervous, but I thought he did a lot of good things. I mean, he kept his game simple, and I that’s how we got success.
