SHOCK: Jacksonville Jaguars’ SURPRISE Playoff Run Defies Injuries and DOUBTERS
There’s a lot that’s happened with the Jacksonville Jaguars this year that’ll catch you by surprise. And I’ll tell you about a few of those things today here on Locked on Jaguars. You are Locked On Jaguars, your daily Jacksonville Jaguars podcast, part of the Locked On network. Your team every day. It is your team every day. And I thought I’d take a little bit of a reflective look with the Jaguars being seven and four. And um maybe this will give us an idea or hopefully it’ll give us an idea of some of the things that make us smarter as fans, make us not have as much anxiety. And this is specific to Jaguar fans because I know uh I’ve been a grief counselor for a number of years. We’ve had this anxiety. I call it the sports Stockholm syndrome, if you will. We just can’t get over the past. And every single time we see something, all I see is a bunch of same old Jack, same old Jack, same old Jacks. And a lot of this stuff can be prevented. We kind of do it to ourselves. So, what I’m going to do today is just point out some things that we had discussed in the off season and big questions that we had that some have been answered in ways that will surprise you. At the end of the show, we’re going to talk about the defense and that surprise. Uh offensive surprise is something that we’ll go over right in the middle. But who would have figured moments of 2025 is where we’re going to start. Who would have figured one that we’d be chasing the Indianapolis Colts for uh division supremacy and be only one game behind the Indianapolis Colts with the Houston Texans being one game behind the Jaguars. As we approach week 13, uh, 12, we’ve only played 11 games, but we had a by week, so it’s week 13 across the NFL. 7 and four. Would you have signed up for it? I know for a fact that 98% of the people out there would have signed up for seven and four through 11 games. Um, I always leave room for things to happen, you know. I I leave room for surprises. And the the the fact is this team is very very close to being nine and two, but they’re also very close to being five and seven when you when when you really or four and seven. That’s that Duvall County math. That’s the that Duvall County education right there. But yeah, they’re real close to being four and seven as well. So the Jaguars have had a propensity propensity to play games close. Uh you could call it escape games. They lost a couple of games that same way. They’ve only really been outplayed twice and that was when they lost to the Rams and when they lost to the Seahawks. That was also a surprise because the Seahawks were if you would have sat there and marked off five games, you would have took both games against the Titans, the game against the Jets, the game against the Raiders, and probably the game against the Seahawks as games that you knew for a fact they were going to win. So, uh, folks thought I was crazy when I said that they could go anywhere 11, maybe 12 wins. It doesn’t seem as crazy now with six games to go. That if they can figure out a way to go four and two, that that they’ll be 11 and um 11 and six for the season and squarely in the playoffs. And folks can talk about the playoffs and and being the worst looking team in the playoff picture and all of that. I do not care. nor should you give a hoot about the fact that they look a certain way. It is hard to win games in the National Football League. It is even harder when you have some injuries, especially the ones that you didn’t expect. Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., and you didn’t expect his play to be what it was before he got hurt. um Trayvon Walker for a couple of different reasons, his hand, and now apparently there’s a knee issue, Eric Murray, Jordan Lewis. So, you’re already talking about three major major additions that were added to this team in Murray, Jordan Lewis, and Travis Hunter. And then you’re talking about two of the top three or four players on the team that were returning in Brian Thomas Jr., his injury combined with his slump and Trayvon Walker missing a nice chunk of action. Who would have thought the Jaguars would be in this situation if I told you about those things? Especially with Liam Cohen being a rookie head coach and nobody really knowing what to expect. And then James Gladstone making a draft day trade for Travis Hunter and right when it felt like he was hitting stride, the the Jaguars lost him for the year. So, if we would have told you all of that, there’s no way, no way you would have thought that this team would be seven and four, but they are. Alas, here we are. And sometimes, I know on Sundays when you watch the game, you get this feeling that you’re having the same like an epiphany like you’re this is deja vu all over again because the anxiety that comes with watching the Jaguars still exists from the it’s the same anxiety you had before, but we’re just getting different results. It’s almost like people are sitting here waiting for somebody to pull the rug from under them because the Jaguars give you moments during games that just make you scratch your head, right? But the difference is they’re winning. And when you’re winning, those things are easier to digest and you just sit there and think, “Okay, you’re just waiting for it to bite you in the butt at the wrong time.” Uh, they’re winning, man. We I mean there’s nothing else to even discuss when you’re talking about the bottom line. Now, we could want them to win better because the more they stack these things up and the more clean they they a they’re able to play and God knows we want them to get there cuz oh boy are we tired of hearing people say they need to clean stuff up. What we need to do bring a whole busload of fabulosa over here so y’all can clean stuff up because that’s one of those it’s either that or what’s happening on the grass. You remember that from training camp, all of these things, but I’m going to go through some scenarios offensively and defensively. And I’m going to tell you who would have thunk it. And I know thunk it isn’t the word, but that’s what we’re going to use today. Who would have thought that? If I had told you this, would you expect that? and we’ll talk about why it’s always important to look at it or try to even look at it from the standpoint of the people that have to do this job for a living. I don’t I try to make myself smarter to make me really understand and I started doing it this way so I could at least understand what they were doing, why they were doing it, and then when they don’t do something, try to understand that, too. Fans, I know y’all sitting there saying, “We don’t be trying to retrain us. We we look at it the way we look at it. We we’re sitting here and we’re and we’re uh social media babies. That’s just the way we’re going to see. No, I got to give you a little bit of balance. I’m not trying to change your mind, but I am trying to maybe give you some tools that’ll help you out real quick. So, the thing we’re going to talk about on offense is this. If I had told you that with them signing Dami Brown, here’s the question that was posed. All right, we got Britain Strange, who we expect a lot from. We got Dami Brown, who we paid $10 million. We drafted Travis Hunter, and we got to get him going because we got to justify the fact that we gave up two first round picks for him and he’s dynamic. And we got Brian Thomas Jr. who was one of the best rookies in the National Football League and a top 10 receiver coming into this league. You remember the problem people thought we were going to have when they were saying, “How are you going to spread the ball out? Who’s going to be catching the ball?” So, if I told you back then they were going to be seven and four and told you to tell me who was going to be catching the ball when they’re making this run, you would have been shocked if I told you that not one of those guys would be the main target on offense for much of this season and the stretch run. That’s where we’re going to start and we’ll do it in just a second here on Locked on Jaguars. All right, today’s show is sponsored and brought to you by our friends over at FanDuel. All right, we moving and grooving here on Locked on Jaguars talking about things that you would have never ever ever thought would happen. Um, before we get to those receivers, Travis ETN, who did not have his fifth year option picked up, is now a fan favorite a favorite on this team. Yep, you got that right. I I He’s a top eight running back in the National Football League, and I don’t even know if stats support that, but I know in the general feeling people really love Travis ETN, and they want Travis ETN to be back. What if I told you Parker Washington? There were some people I think Brent Martino said it and a couple of fans said it that Parker Washington would be an integral part of the Jaguars offense. I did not know that Parker Washington might be a allpro at kick return and punt return but or at least punt return but he’s definitely there. He’s one of the most dangerous players in the league. And that goes to player development and that’s something that we’re going make sure that we touch on that too because it is extremely important. But people were trying to find how do we He’s the star of camp. How do we get him touches? See, this is why football is this way because you never know what’s going to happen. And nobody builds their team anticipating injuries, but people anticipate the fact that people are going to get hurt playing a gladiator sport. And they know that they have to fill these rosters up with dudes that are absolutely capable or they have the wherewithal to make sure that they keep pressing and pressing and pressing. And we’ve seen that at wide receiver and Parker Washington is a big reason why this team is seven and four and look like they’re making a strong push towards the playoffs at the very least and maybe even the division title. But when they give Dami Brown that much money and you have Brian Thomas Jr. coming off of that much success from 2024 and you get Travis Hunter and you’re invested in playing him both ways which wide receiver is where he started the most. You would have told me I needed to be drug tested if I would have said that come week 11, 10, week 10, 11, and 12 when the Jaguars are making a run for towards the division, not one of those people would be people that the Jaguars are throwing the ball to the most. They went out and got Jacobe Meyers because they absolutely needed to. Parker Washington has stepped this game up because he absolutely needed to. Without either one of them, the Jaguars wouldn’t be anywhere near where they are right now. We know Travis Hunter got hurt and he’s out for the year. It it it’s a harsh reality of this game. Brian Thomas Jr. got hurt and even before that, our feelings was hurt because he wasn’t playing up to par with the way that we expected him to play either. And Dame Brown, let’s just face it, he’s been a a disappointment regardless of the fact that he did have a little bit of a fast start and then all of a sudden just fell off a cliff and then he got hurt and he hasn’t been able to get back to being a part of the rotation. Tim Patrick is getting a lot of his catches and and and Tramble, the young kid, Allan Traml is playing a little bit whenever they need somebody else. So you could almost see him getting phased out a little bit, but he’s still there as a part of the offense. But the thing that I really want to talk about, and this is why you do things the way that you do it, and this is a shout out to Liam Cohen, and it’s a shout out to James Glass on. It is really next man up when it comes to skilled position players. It is absolutely next man up. And they did what they had to do and they went out and got Jacobe Myers, who I think they need to figure out a way to keep him because even if you get the production from those two guys that are missing, they’re on rookie deals. It doesn’t hurt you to to overpay. You overpaid for Diami. Shift some of that money over to the two guys that’s helping you out right now. See, the money is what got you here. That’s what it took to get you here. But what I like what they’re doing is that’s not going to keep you at the top of the depth chart. You still got to be able to play and earn it because if you don’t, they’ll replace you with somebody else. I was wondering why people thought it was such a problem to spread the ball around. I you I’ve gone back in my head. I I was sitting there. I was actually in the shower and I was just thinking, yeah, Jake Green, Randy Moss, and Chris Carter. And nobody wondered how those dudes were going to split up and divvy up the catches. That’s two first Ballot Hall of Famers. One of them is in the GOAT conversation. And then another guy in Jake Reed that was very good. And then you got Puka Na and Devonte Adams right now in LA where nobody’s tripping on who’s catching the balls, right? So imagine having that discussion in the offseason where people the biggest concern that they had and this is where I go to y’all y’all worry too much. The biggest concern is who’s going to catch the ball and who’s going to lead and you paid this for this guy and you use this draft pick on that guy. What about this guy? Is he going to be upset? And it turns out ain’t nobody got the right to be mad because ain’t none of them. Bad English again, but I’m gonna say it. Ain’t none of them the ones catching the ball for various reasons. Some of it’s out of their control. Like Travis, he couldn’t help that he got hurt. But this is why you don’t worry. And the Jaguars brass couldn’t sit there and be worried. They needed to find solutions. They needed production. And this is even before Brian Thomas Jr. got hurt. They were in the market for a wide receiver because they say, “I know what we thought, but this is what it is. So, we got to go get somebody that can catch this ball.” James Glass don’t even said it when Jacobe Myers got got to the He says his superpower is catching the ball. we’ve had a problem catching the ball, which means we ain’t going to have no more problems catching the ball because if they don’t catch it, he’s going to be the one that we throw it to. Period. And that’s what’s happened. See, it’s accountability. And this is what I told y’all when y everybody was like, “These dudes are the nice dudes and where are the grown men in the building?” And they ain’t nobody got no experience. And I was sitting there saying, “Y’all can play with them if y’all want to.” And act like these jokers is uh Opie Taylor and and and Mayberry and Mr. Rogers. Don’t get it twisted. These dudes are trying to win. They are trying to eat the face off of whoever they are going against and they are as competitive. And you’ve seen that with Liam. And when when when Jimmy Gladstone says game on, that’s exactly what he means. And I know we got a long way to go. But I’m talking about how far we’ve come right now to the point where in the off season folks were actually sitting there worried about which one of those wide receivers was going to get all the credit. And not one of those three are the reason why at this point the Jaguars are making a run towards the playoffs. It’s with a developmental wide receiver who kept pushing and kept pushing, didn’t pout, didn’t take his ball home. He just kept going, found a way, found a role, and is the lowest paid of all of these dudes. But yet and still, he is the one getting the bread every Sunday in Parker, Washington. I think it’s brilliant, and I think it’s great. I love the fact that Britain Strange came back and had five catches for 93 yards. And that’s another one who who had that on their docket. All of those people that got mad that Evan Ingram was let go. Didn’t I tell you about those move tight ends as opposed to having a dude that can do everything, block and catch. What I tell you? I told you having a move tight end in the game, you wonder why they couldn’t block anybody. And this ain’t a moratorum against Evan Ingram. is just that that type of player puts you at a disadvantage more than he puts you at an advantage. Even if he catches a 100 balls a year, nobody cares. Nobody cares. It’s about winning. It ain’t about stats. So, right now, the Jaguars are winning uh games because of people that one weren’t even on the roster and two, the ones that were on the roster were an afterthought to just a few people. It shows you what this team is all about. It is about competition. It is about whoever’s getting it done is going to play. And this is the thing that was missing because people around here have never really been used to the the meritocracy aspect of football because it always seemed like folks, and when I say folks, I mean folks, wanted to play the people who they prioritize based on draft status or contract. That’s not going on here at all. So, it’s about being ready and staying ready. News flash, same things has happened on the both side, both on the other side of the ball. Travis Hunter was thought to uh be a big part of the defense as well as Jordan Lewis and Eric Murray. They’re making a run right now and for the most part over the last month, neither one of those guys have been there. And also, the Jaguar fans wanted to go forever and go out and spend a whole bunch of cache and money and resources on a third edge rusher, which would have made no sense unless you can always be in a sub package and put them on the field. It’s too much money to be standing on the sideline. So, what did they do? They found their own pass rushers. We’ll talk about them in just a second. And the defense here on Locked on Jaguars. All right, we’re moving and grooving here. A couple of days before Thanksgiving, I’ll have uh the crossover Thanksgiving morning for you with Tyler Roland from Locked on Titans and of course uh Wednesday show tomorrow. I’m going to tell y’all some things that I’m absolutely thankful about as as as it pertains to football, being able to do this for a living and being able to share uh with you guys. That’s what I think this is. This is sharing. I don’t want to sound all therapy based, but I share every day. We talk and sometimes we go through it on social media. But the thing is is my intent is always to make this uh and anybody that knows me from this network when they started when we started this they asked me what was my why. My why was making you guys smarter. Not that you’re not smart but to see things from my perspective and to learn from you along the way so we can be smart fans together. I just was waiting for the Jackwatch to start winning and having something to be smart about and voila, here we are. And one of the ways that they’re doing that is with Anthony Campanne’s defense. And in that defense, we’ve talked about the need for aggression, the need for more defensive linemen. You know, I don’t hear too many people talking about them three techniques anymore because Eric Armstead has played better uh as of late and he might have been playing okay. You know, sometimes they get blamed for a lot of stuff, but I know they weren’t getting a lot of push. uh his sack numbers are pretty good for an interior defensive tackle this year. Mason Smith is also uh starting to contribute a little bit more. And then I keep hearing a lot of things from the coaching staff about Devon Hamilton and how he’s played. He saved the Raider game, by the way, by getting his big old hand up and knocking the ball down because we’d have been sitting here angry with our lip poked out had they lost to the lowly Raiders and they shouldn’t even been in that game. So this is why I’m happy, too, that I think they’re going to be all right because I think Trayvon is going to come back. I believe uh uh Jordan Lewis is going to be able to come back and help this team. And at some point, Eric Murray is going to be able to get back. Devin Lloyd finally did come back. And now they’re also getting quality quality reps from Dennis Gard. Good special teams play from Yasier Abdullah who was out for a little bit. The expected play of of uh for Yadi Olivan who that that’s just what he does. Josh Allen is one of the leading pressure uh edges in the in in the National Football League and and now it’s starting to show up with sacks the last few weeks. So, he’s coming along. And then they went out and got Dewan Smoot who’s been very very helpful and Emanuel Obar not so much. But here’s what happened. People wanted them to go out and get edge rushers. They’ve been talking about edge rushers forever. And they kind of forgot that they were talking about edge rushers forever when the Jaguars edge rushers both had double digit sacks last year. So, nobody was begging and screaming for it until they got off to a statistical slow start this year. And in comes Danny Stringgo. I hope I’m saying his name right. String or stri and BJ Green. So now you get these two young undrafted players that are very very productive providing speed along with the veteran Dennis Gard giving you some different looks and Devin Lloyd being sent uh up to a gap a lot more than he normally uh was in the past and people had been begging and clamoring for that. Now you don’t hear anybody talking about edge rushers anymore. Who would have thought that without actually going out, the Jaguars would have two undrafted free agents that are big big parts of this new push that they’re able to get on third down and get people off of the field. How many times did I talk about that? If I would have told you that there was no Travis Hunter, there was no Trayvon Walker, that uh Eric Murray would be out, especially after the start that he had, and then Jordan Lewis, who was their their best free agent that they signed. If I have told you all of that and said, but the Jaguars defense outside of a couple of bad quarters are really, really, really doing their thing and making a push for the Jaguars to make the playoffs. Man, y’all would have told me I need to be be drug tested, that I was doing crystal. I’m telling you, that’s what happened. So now that all of the things that folks were worried about, we didn’t add any interior defensive lineman because I told you they can’t do everything at once. Uh we don’t have a third pass rusher to take the pressure off of Trayvon and Josh. Who’s going to play corner? What about safeties? That’s still a problem. Even though I love Antonio Johnson and Dwey is always gonna give you maximum effort, it is still a little bit of an issue. But like I said, they can’t fix everything at one time. If I would have told you that the Jaguars defense has helped them even when their offense wasn’t doing much and they were able to start the year out getting a lot of turnovers and all of those injuries would have happened, y’all got me committed. This is why you don’t worry about stuff. And now it’s easier for me to tell y’all that because it’s proof of concept. You see the ability to them to go out and find people that can play. You see Rayon Lane and they got reinforcements coming because next year when Travis gets healthy along with u uh not Rayon Lane, the other kid that they took, the other defensive back they took. The name escapes me real quick. Um, when they get these dudes back next year, it’s going to be a tremendous, tremendous boost to this franchise. Caleb Ransaw, when Caleb Ransaw comes back, they put him on IR. They didn’t want to try to fast track him. What they did was they went they went and said, “You know what? It’s all about the future. We’re going to make sure that we take care of him and do the right thing by him. Uh it’s not career threatening or anything like that, but he’s going to come back with gang busters. And I’m sure with how they were feeling about him and how he was moving around in training camp, he is exactly what they thought he was going to be. I’m excited about the prospects for the rest of this year. But I’m really excited about it because while I haven’t really looked into the draft from the Jaguars perspective because I’ve done it for 49 years and and half of that was without the internet. It was just with books and manuals and trying to connect the dots whenever I could see people play based on pedigree and and who the coaches in college was. But you know the last 25 years we got computers and all of this stuff and we can see everything. But I was doing this way before then. So I’m not doing that as much with the Jaguars this year because I trust the brass. Tony Belli, James Gladstone, Liam Cohen that they’re going to be able to draft players and line it up with the mission and it be complimentary on both sides of the ball. You look at the Rams, man. The Rams won the Super Bowl, blew it up, got rid of a couple of Hall of Famers. Uh Aaron Donald retired. They fixed their offensive line, changed their entire front seven and the secondary, and they’re the best team in the league. And this is like three or four years after they went won the Super Bowl. It it’s remarkable that they’ve been able to do that. You look at the 49ers. 49ers are missing two Hall of Famers in Bosa and Fred Warner and and and and then George KD was hurt for a lot of this year and Christian McCaffrey was banged up most of last year. They’re eight and four with with like three rookies on their defensive line. It’s unreal, man. The fact that these teams can draft players that fit what they do so well that they plug and play. And this is why I’m very very happy. And I I don’t have to try to sit here and go through my little my little notepad of guys that I want the Jaguars to pick. I’m just going to be waiting in anticipation when this season ends, whenever that ends, whether it ends in the Super Bowl or in the playoffs or whatever. And I am so stoked about the future of this franchise because they got it right. And I know a lot of people want to talk about Trevor. Let me explain something. I have been telling people this entire time that when I talk about Trevor Lawrence, I’m talking about what people think he is as opposed to what he actually is. And the Jaguars have to make an adjustment to what they expect. I’m not talking about whether I think Trevor is a decent quarterback or a good quarterback. I have said that Trevor Lawrence at times looks like an allp pro and then at other times he doesn’t and sometimes that’s not even game to game or quarter to quarter that’s drive to sometimes it’s in the same drive. I’ve all always just talked about his consistency and the variance and you guys have heard this and he needs to close that gap. Don’t confuse that with me thinking that that kid stinks or that the Jaguars need to just find a way to get rid of him, which I know is almost impossible. At least he’s going to be playing on the first year of his extension next year. The reason why I say I want to make y’all smarter is because folks seem to think that that’s the way I feel when I have never ever ever said that. And all of these things that I talk about are right there for your consumption on audio or video each and every day. We got to get to the point where we accept truth without thinking that it’s extreme to the other side. And for every every time I criticize Trevor, there’s a gang of people that’s ready to jump on me. And every time I say something nice about Trevor, there’s a gang of people ready to jump on me. So, as polarizing as it is, I do stuff like this just because I want people to listen and pay attention. Dan Olski said something I’ve been saying forever about Trevor’s inconsistency. And somebody says, “Is that how you really feel?” And then somebody else said, “I got those vibes, too.” You don’t have to depend on vibes when you get my words every single day. What you depending on vibes for? Why you worried about what you thought I said as opposed to paying attention to exactly what I say? And this is not a peacock moment or anything like that, but it is. Is especially for the everyday. The reason why I harp on that word a lot because these are a series of 30 minute podcasts, but really this year is a is a chapter of a book and then each chapter is a synop synopsis or or or or a part of the bigger picture that is the Jaguars. It’s just nice to know that that bigger picture is headed for at least some a sunshiny uh area where we going to be able to say some good stuff here for a while. Starts every single day here on Locked on Jaguars. And you can also check me out on Locked on NFL. Tyler Rolling early in the morning and me in the barberh shop. We use the help from local experts that know their team just like I know the Jaguars. And we use clips from them to keep our pulse, our finger on the pulse of the team. Happy almost Thanksgiving. Hope you enjoyed the show today. We’ll see you next time here on Locked on Jaguars. We don’t take you for granted. Thanks for spending 32 minutes and 20 seconds with me today. We’ll see you next time.

Just win, baby! – Al Davis.
the refs were trying to give it to them y'all look at that last play the receiver was pushing off trying to make separation the whole time. I just want to win the AFC I'm not sold on Daniel Jones.
I was just thinking the same way about the draft. Now I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the process.
You do great work T! I bet you were a great grief counselor as well. I do listen intently everyday and I’ve been a jag fan since their inception but you do help me evolve as a better fan, for lack of a better term. I love the inside the locker room post game speeches and trev is really taking on Liam’s qualities, especially I’ve noticed when speaking to the media. He used to always kinda just go with the narrative and questions but last week he was intent and stood up for himself. His confidence is slowly growing and he’s always humble and I’ll back him to the very end. I think last weeks game is going to be a turning point for him.
“Grief counselor” I love it! Probably couldn’t be more true. Help me Tony, I’ve been a Jags fan since 1995! I am truly angry, sad, and lonely! Well, maybe now that I’m an everyday dayer, I’m not so lonely 😊
Thanks for all you do!
I would not be surprised if BTJ gets shipped outta here. I know he’s cheap and it’s only his second season but he doesn’t play the game like the fill-ins iplay the game n Jakobi and Parker. If Jimmy Gladstone is who we think he is, he signs another WR or drafts one kinda high and BTJ becomes expendable. Cannot play this game scared. That’s why Dyami is outta here too. Too scared to play tough.
ETN did have his fifth year picked up. Lloyd didn’t, right ?
receiving core caught me by suprise.
Day 8 asking for a ransaw recovery update interview
Trammel. No. He's the reason for 2 of Trev's ints. Can't stop and wait for the ball.
Jakobi Meyers is such a tremendous addition 🎉
When the whole WR room is healthy, this pass game might be DEADLY 😅
The colts about to do the same thing our jags did a few years ago wen we was 8-3 and damnn near lost the rest of the games left
I really look At it as a knock on the Jaguars when folk call AFC SOUTH weak. I hope we put 3 teams in the playoffs and we be the best of the best decision.
I’ve been here since the beginning and the Jaguars have definitely given me PTSD. They give me flashbacks!
